What happened to manners and morals?
I'm sick of the lack of class that has permeated our society. Being coarse is a badge of honor. Having a dirty mind is seen as cool. Nobody applauds decency and good manners. And our unhealthy obsession with sex is reflected in this mayoral candidate and his concubine. Too much filth being mainstreamed and not enough emphasis on the clean, proper and emotionally uplifting. Sex is a wonderful thing, but its been so animalized. Not enough emphasis on pure romance.
we need more gentlemen and ladies who have respect for themselves and who carry themselves with good manners and class. I think Ellen is a great example of someone with great values who knows what is decent for the public and what isn't. Drew Carey is another one, as are Rachael rey and adell.
|by Anonymous||reply 72||08/04/2013|
Tim Gunn is another good example.
|by Anonymous||reply 2||07/30/2013|
OP is the Roger Octopus Troll who has been on a prissy pearl clutching rampage lately, hysterically decrying internet gossip and "sex pigs."
|by Anonymous||reply 4||07/30/2013|
Wow! Way to stick in yet another thread about Weiner; that makes about 40,000 now. But, this was pretty cleve in making the reader think it was about something else.
|by Anonymous||reply 5||07/30/2013|
It's wrong... [italic]shockingly[/italic] wrong!
|by Anonymous||reply 6||07/30/2013|
Ellen is a phoney bitch. It's all an act.
|by Anonymous||reply 7||07/30/2013|
Whatever happen to class?
|by Anonymous||reply 9||07/30/2013|
Rachel Ray once made a casserole with hot dogs; is THAT what you consider class?
|by Anonymous||reply 10||07/30/2013|
Do some of you elderly gays around here see Nancy Reagan staring back when you look in the mirror?
|by Anonymous||reply 12||07/30/2013|
OP be the kind of person you want to see more of. Set an example.
|by Anonymous||reply 13||07/30/2013|
I have noticed a complete lack of patience both on the road and in public situations. People have this mindset that they must be instantly gratified.
|by Anonymous||reply 15||07/30/2013|
This is a joke, right?
Ellen? Really? Manners and morals?
|by Anonymous||reply 16||07/30/2013|
I'm with you OP. I hate that fowl language is accepted in all forms of media. ...it's a constant barrage of bleep, bleep, bleep, censoring of fuck,etc..
|by Anonymous||reply 17||07/31/2013|
I agree. If I hear one more rooster say cock-a-doodle-do on TV I'm going to writ the FCC
|by Anonymous||reply 18||07/31/2013|
You had me until "Ellen"....
|by Anonymous||reply 19||07/31/2013|
I agree with you OP. I'm afraid it's only going to get worse with social media.
|by Anonymous||reply 21||07/31/2013|
It's that dadburn rock and roll rubbish!
|by Anonymous||reply 24||07/31/2013|
Hint for everyone: don't drive to Menard's after priming wood siding.
"Looks like somebody was painting!"
No, I was sucking dicks,. Just ring up my purchase, Cunt!
|by Anonymous||reply 25||07/31/2013|
OP; Those of us who have manners and class are still here. We are the majority, but we just don't speak up, usually.
I don't know if these are the end times; but if they are, hang in there...don't surrender your higher self just for the sake of being popular. Remember, all that's going on has been prophesied. We are advised to keep the faith.
|by Anonymous||reply 26||07/31/2013|
Did you see Richie clutch Rosie's bosom on Real Housewives of New Jersey Sunday night?
I was shocked I tell you, shocked@! It seems he thinks because she is lesbian it was OK.
Apart from that scene, the show was a perfect example of polite decorum that of which even Nancy Reagan would approve.
|by Anonymous||reply 27||07/31/2013|
R12 & R18 You guys really made me laugh. Thanks I needed that. OP The examples that you listed Ellen, Rachel Ray, Drew Carey. I believe that you have loud and goofy confused with manners and morals. Ellen knows how to cater to the elderly audience that helps to keep her program on the air. Although having Mario Lopez appear on the show in his underwear is probably not everyone's idea of class. I would certainly love to hear more about your suggestions for what would be "clean and proper". I'm also curious OP; hopefully this doesn't offend you. How old are you?
|by Anonymous||reply 28||07/31/2013|
I agree with OP. There ain't no ladies now, there's only pigs and whores, and even kids'll knock you down so's they can pass. No-one even says Oops when they're passing their gas.
|by Anonymous||reply 29||07/31/2013|
R17, what do have against poultry and their language???
("fowl" language; JHC...)
Agree with OP in general, but posts like R17 make me think I'd rather see poor manners and loose morals than illiteracy.
|by Anonymous||reply 30||07/31/2013|
OP are you Mamma Morton or Velma Kelly?
|by Anonymous||reply 31||07/31/2013|
Adelle= Emily Post? GTFO! Before what was basically something private, I'm sure most people thought Weiner was very "moral"... and I put it in quotes because the sliding scale of it is huge. I find a cum dumpster like Sydney Leathers way less on the moral scale than Weiner, all his crap was consensual with other adults [and I'm sure wifey knew AND she was the one picking his spank bank whores] Both him and Clinton, when asked should have said MYOFB... because they lied at first; its what got them in popolitico hot water.
|by Anonymous||reply 32||08/01/2013|
To see them - indiscriminate women, it pains me more than I can say - the lack of taste that they display.
|by Anonymous||reply 33||08/01/2013|
I used to have class. I was raised in a wealthy family. I was cut off and now I am a trashy white asshole. Oh well.
|by Anonymous||reply 34||08/01/2013|
Using the biggest phony of all time...Ellen...as your example of someone with manners...oh my sides. She is a colossal bitch to all who work for/with her.
|by Anonymous||reply 35||08/01/2013|
I blame the internets.
Infinitely much easier to scream shit at people when you're anonymous.
And, sweetheart: manners also come with proper English usage.
|by Anonymous||reply 36||08/01/2013|
OP I could not have said it better. This country is flushing down the toilet - swirling into the gutter with its disposal, embarrassing "culture" and a stupid, non-communicative generation a violent neanderthals.
|by Anonymous||reply 37||08/01/2013|
Well don't look at me. I always say "excuse me" when I loudly force out a fart in a crowded elevator.
|by Anonymous||reply 38||08/01/2013|
Who's gonna tell the OP it's not 1930?
|by Anonymous||reply 39||08/01/2013|
R4 is ABSOLUTELY right, R11. One only has to look at the Cheyenne Jackson thread to smell your self-loathing prissy stink all over it.
|by Anonymous||reply 40||08/01/2013|
What's the deal with Ellen? Is she not like she is on her show?? The most surprising thing I heard about her is that she smokes.
|by Anonymous||reply 41||08/01/2013|
Who's gonna tell the OP it's not 1930?
1930? As if. Someone should tell him that it is not 1830.
|by Anonymous||reply 42||08/01/2013|
r18 made me laugh out loud.
|by Anonymous||reply 43||08/01/2013|
OP the US has never cultivated civilized behavior. Many pride themselves on being "natural", "real", etc., that is non-effete. What you see is the end product of the anti-intellectualism that has been rampant in US society since the country was founded. When politicians can belittle people for being educated and paint themselves as "just folk" , it gives license for those without "manners" or who view them as "prissy" or unnecessary.
|by Anonymous||reply 44||08/01/2013|
Oh, oh! I've got one. This just makes me furious. You know when men use women's liberation as an excuse not to kill bugs for them? Oh I just hate that! I don't care what anybody says, I think the man should have to kill the bug!
|by Anonymous||reply 45||08/01/2013|
Manners and morals don't sell; sex does. Thus, in our commercial society, sex, animalistic or not, wins over manners and morals. Just the way it is.
For the wisdom of that path, simply consider the fate of most of those who do porn or escort work.
|by Anonymous||reply 46||08/01/2013|
R7, if I dislike Ellen about anything, it's that she crossed the picket line when screenwriters were striking. I didn't appreciate that 1% bullshit.
|by Anonymous||reply 47||08/01/2013|
R20, you've got to be fucking kidding.
You're why this place sucks shit now.
OP, I hope, was a parody. If not, he/she is equally responsible. But I'm going with parody. Don't most prissy-ass Miss Grundy types look up the spelling of the celebrities they supposedly think make good role models?
|by Anonymous||reply 48||08/01/2013|
I agree with OP. I despise what society has become. Everything is fleeting and utterly disposable. Exhibiting lack of self-control, narcissism, and being trashy and crass are lauded and rewarded. Women dress like $5-per-blow-job hookers. Entitlement (with its signature line, "This is unacceptable") is the norm. Everyone is a victim with no personal responsbility taken for one's actions. My parents were children of the 40s and 50s who were taught to show respect for others, and they passed that mindset down to my siblings and me. I definitely should've been born a few generations earlier.
|by Anonymous||reply 50||08/01/2013|
Let's all become Mormons. We'll dress nicely, speak morally and be polite. It will cover up our insanity.
|by Anonymous||reply 52||08/01/2013|
It's true, people had better manners in the past. My parents and grandparents were polite and mannerly in everything they did. Even when they discriminated against black people, they put a nice smile on their faces and said, "go on, shoo now! I'll give you just enough time to leave this area right now before I call the sheriff, you hear?"
Now they just shoot black people willy nilly; not even so much as a by your leave.
|by Anonymous||reply 53||08/01/2013|
What's wrong with dressing nicely and being polite, and not giving into our baser instincts? Not sure what "speaking morally" means, but if it means less cursing and more respect toward others, I'm all for it.
|by Anonymous||reply 54||08/01/2013|
No I am not the OP....though I don't know much about Rachel Rey
Yet you are the only two to call her "Rey" rather than the correct Ray.
|by Anonymous||reply 56||08/01/2013|
Sex is a wonderful thing, but its been so animalized. Not enough emphasis on pure romance.
You realize that sex and romance have never been necessarily tied together? I you think they should be, you're just one step away from the Catholic Church and the Mormons.
What defines the "dirty mind" you object to?
|by Anonymous||reply 57||08/01/2013|
I never did mind about the little things.
|by Anonymous||reply 58||08/01/2013|
OP the US has never cultivated civilized behavior.
Oh, yes we did. It was not as large or established as in Europe, but we certainly did have a class of people that produced an Edith Wharton, a Henry James, T. and F. Roosevelt, the Boston Brahmin, among many other less famous, but equally civilized people.
The two world wars ended it.
|by Anonymous||reply 59||08/01/2013|

The loss of WASP privilege took away their expectation that knowing the right people was enough to have a career, and the real wealth got diluted over the generations. It's hard to pretend to be a British aristocrat when you have no money.

Adele has an out-of-wedlock baby with a guy she barely knows. How does that make her a paragon of morals?
|by Anonymous||reply 62||08/04/2013|
I agree with OP, but would disagree with his examples. I think Cate Blanchett would be a good example.
|by Anonymous||reply 63||08/04/2013|
I agree with OP, as well. Ignore the naysayers - they are, themselves, part of the problem, although they do not want to/cannot bear to admit to it. Don't join with them, OP - you lie with dogs, you get fleas.
And common decency/common courtesy are not things that belong to the 1% exclusively - they love what the hoi polloi has become. They point and sneer - encouraging such stuffs, especially, as they profit from it in so many ways - but it is they who have the means to be truly amoral, as opposed to being simply ignorant, cheap and crude.
|by Anonymous||reply 64||08/04/2013|
This is the age of the gross.
|by Anonymous||reply 65||08/04/2013|
There is not and has never been anything wrong with having a dirty mind. Sharing one's thoughts at inappropriate times is the problem.
|by Anonymous||reply 67||08/04/2013|
I am amused beyond belief to see a thread about morals on this or any gay message board. Manners, yes; morals: GMAFB.
|by Anonymous||reply 69||08/04/2013|
Whatever happened to the Grace Kelleys and the Cary Grants of the world?
|by Anonymous||reply 70||08/04/2013|
What a classless little skank.
|by Anonymous||reply 71||08/04/2013|
Manners: You are talking about formalities that were important in the past to indicate what class you belonged to. The are meaningless to most people so they have been dropped as a waste of time.
There is still plenty of real courtesy when it matters. But we live in a more diverse society and people do have different expectations.
Morality: Morals regarding sex have changed because of birth control. In general we are much more healthy about sexuality today than in the "proper" past you long for. One person's idea of morality is another's idea of sin. Who do you think so decide these things? The Mormon Church?
I don't want anyone who uses the terms "decency" and "dirty mind" and who equates sex with "filth" making moral decisions for me, thanks.
