Eileen Brennan, the veteran actress perhaps best known for her role as the good-hearted Texas waitress in Peter Bogdanovich’s The Last Picture Show, has died. She was 80.

Saw her in Little Mary Sunshine. A truly hilarious, unforgettable performance. And she was lovely in Hello, Dolly!

by Anonymousreply 107/30/2013

She was awesome in The Sting and Murder by Death. Great memories from my childhood in the 1970s.

by Anonymousreply 207/30/2013

Holy shit. She just bought apt in ny

by Anonymousreply 307/30/2013

Aw, that makes me sad. Such a hoot in Private Benjamin and Clue.

by Anonymousreply 407/30/2013

I was thinking of someone else

by Anonymousreply 507/30/2013

Very funny, too, as Jack's acting teacher in Will and Grace. I don't think your life was a barrel of laughs, so now RIP, Good Lady.

by Anonymousreply 607/30/2013

Oh is she THAT classic character from Private Benjamin? A great role in film history, supporting or not.

by Anonymousreply 707/30/2013

What no At Long Last Live? She and Madelyn Kahn were the stars of that one.

by Anonymousreply 807/30/2013

And it's just out on Blu-Ray.

She is, as always, fabulous in it, as she was in everything she ever did. Did she ever give a bad performance? ANYONE??

by Anonymousreply 907/30/2013

I saw her twice in LITTLE MARY SUNSHINE Off-Broadway, in HELLO, DOLLY! on Broadway, and in the national tour of THE MIRACLE WORKER.

I don't think I've seen a funnier performance than her Little Mary Sunshine.

RIP

by Anonymousreply 1007/30/2013

It's Zandra with a "Z".

by Anonymousreply 1107/30/2013

Genius.

RIP, Zandra.

by Anonymousreply 1207/30/2013

Was she at least nominated for an Oscar for Pvt Benjamin??

by Anonymousreply 1307/30/2013

I thought she was dead already.

Maybe I confused her with Eileen Heckart.

Neither one has been relevant for decades.

by Anonymousreply 1407/30/2013

Any survivors? I don't think she ever married.

by Anonymousreply 1507/30/2013

Holy shit. I just listened to Little Mary Sunshine yesterday - after not playing the CD since the day I bought it - and that was years ago!

by Anonymousreply 1607/30/2013

I think I'm going to go cry and then smoke a zigarette.

by Anonymousreply 1707/30/2013

Will: Zandra, remember me. I came to your acting class last year.

Zandra: Oh yeah, I remember you...the crying fag!

by Anonymousreply 1807/30/2013

RIP Eileen, so good in Private Benjamin and Last Picture Show.

R5 Who bought your apartment? If that's not too nosy...

by Anonymousreply 1907/30/2013

Oh wow, I was just watching a low-budget thriller last night that had a young woman in it who reminded me of Brennan. I mainly know her from The Last Picture Show, she was great in that.

by Anonymousreply 2007/30/2013

Yes, R13.

by Anonymousreply 2107/30/2013

Yes r13. Plus a BAFTA nomination for Last Picture Show and, oddly, a Razzie nomination for something. Rounds it out, doesn't it.

by Anonymousreply 2207/30/2013

Damn, another good one bites the dust. r8 I agree, loved her in "At Long Last Love". She and John Hillerman singing "But In The Morning No", was a hoot. And "The Sting" too. She'll always be the best blue-faced Army captain of all time.

by Anonymousreply 2307/30/2013

She had a terrible accident years ago a car hit her she had serious injuries glad to see she lived many more years

by Anonymousreply 2407/30/2013

She was divorced and had two sons, R15.

by Anonymousreply 2507/30/2013

Zanda with a Z!

by Anonymousreply 2607/30/2013

I loved her in "The Death of Richie" with Ben Gazzara and Robby Benson. She nailed the part of the mother caught between her addicted son and tough-love husband. If you've not seen this made for tv film, watch it. It was based on a true story of a father who shot his son.

by Anonymousreply 2707/30/2013

May she rest in peace.

by Anonymousreply 2807/30/2013

Eileen Brennen was a very good actress. She appeared in a number of excellent films:The Last Picture Show, Murder by Death, Sting, Scarecrow, Clue, Daisy Miller and in many TV series and TV movies.

Bon voyage Mrs. Eileen Brennan

by Anonymousreply 2907/30/2013

AND YES SHE WAS ALSO GREAT IN PRIVATE BENJAMIN!

She got an Oscar nomination for her performance in that movie.

by Anonymousreply 3007/30/2013

"Our lives are in danger, ya beatnik!"

by Anonymousreply 3107/30/2013

She was sensational in "The Real McCoys."

by Anonymousreply 3207/30/2013

Loved her in Murder by Death as the girlfriend/secretary of Sam Diamond.

"Sam, why do you keep all those naked muscle men magazines in your office?"

by Anonymousreply 3307/30/2013

Always was fascinated that the husky baritone broad of later years had been the lilting soprano ingenue of Little Mary Sunshine and Hello, Dolly!

by Anonymousreply 3407/30/2013

She was crossing a street with Goldie Hawn when she was hit by a car and severely injured.

She made her first public appearance after the accident on the 1985 Golden Globe Awards.

by Anonymousreply 3507/30/2013

She received Emmy nominations for her guest starring roles on Newhart, Thirtysomething, Taxi and Will & Grace.

by Anonymousreply 3607/30/2013

Didn't really have a major impact though the way say Angela Lansbury did. When Lansbury goes, it will be a huge deal. No one today really knows who Brennan is outside those of us who are film buffs.

by Anonymousreply 3707/30/2013

So sad. Taken away just as she was entering her prime.

by Anonymousreply 3807/30/2013

WIKI has a good listing of her many TV appearances.

by Anonymousreply 3907/30/2013

[quote]Didn't really have a major impact though the way say Angela Lansbury did. When Lansbury goes, it will be a huge deal. No one today really knows who Brennan is outside those of us who are film buffs.

So fucking what? We are remembering her. When you go, NO ONE will notice, so what's your point?

by Anonymousreply 4007/30/2013

"What's the story with you and this Tremont character, Judy?"

"Why are you spying on me?"

"Your lover-boy's a Red!"

"Don't be ridiculous! He WAS a Red... for about five seconds! Because of a woman he used to date."

"Nobody stops being a Communist, Benjamin. It's a terminal disease. And I am not going to sit around with my thumb up my ass while you divulge classified information during the throes of passion."

"Oh Please! I can barely SPEAK during the throes of passion! Believe me, Henri Tremont is as much a Communist as me.... or YOU!"

*GASP* "If Patton were ALIVE, he would slap your FACE."

by Anonymousreply 4107/30/2013

[quote]Was she at least nominated for an Oscar for Pvt Benjamin??

Yes, and she won the Emmy and Golden Globe a few years later for the same role when PRIVATE BENJAMIN was turned into a TV sitcom.

by Anonymousreply 4207/30/2013

r33 "Research, doll, research."

by Anonymousreply 4307/30/2013

Bless her. She was always memorable.

by Anonymousreply 4407/30/2013

R40, your reaction seems a little over the top. What's your deal?

by Anonymousreply 4507/30/2013

A brilliant comedienne, may she rest in peace.

by Anonymousreply 4607/30/2013

She had a cameo in Jeepers Creepers with Justin Long a few years ago that was just sad. That terrible car accident really altered the course of her career as it happened when she was in her prime. And btw, why hasn't Goldie Hawn commented on her death yet? Seems heartless if you ask me.

by Anonymousreply 4707/30/2013

R47, the death only happened a few hours ago, and maybe Goldie hasn't heard or has better things to do.

As I said above, she was not a major star and her death isn't exactly headline news today.

by Anonymousreply 4807/30/2013

R47, you scare me. Jumping on Goldie Hawn and calling her heartless when you don't know anything about what Hawn knows or what other non-glory hogging actions she has taken. You sound like a very judgmental person and one who jumps to conclusions. And if and when she does acknowledge Brennan's death, there will people who think doing it in a public way is self serving.

by Anonymousreply 4907/30/2013

Goldie hawn has commented on her Twitter:

[quote] Goldie Hawn ‏@goldiehawn We have lost my old friend Eileen Brennan. No one ever made me laugh more! Now I cry. Please keep singing darling from on high. Rest

by Anonymousreply 5007/30/2013

Sean Hayes ‏@theseanhayes

So sad to hear of Eileen Brennan's death. She was hilarious to work with on W&G. She always made me laugh during my scenes with her.

by Anonymousreply 5107/30/2013

R14 Both far more interesting than you will ever be, cunt.

by Anonymousreply 5207/30/2013

First saw her in Last Picture Show and The Sting.

She was almost cast as Laura Petrie in The Dick Van Dyke Show, but they found MTM very late in the game.

She did musicals at the start of her career, original productions of Little Mary Sunshine and Hello, Dolly.

by Anonymousreply 5307/30/2013

Rest in peace honey.

You had a rough couple of years there.

We thank you for your hard work and super talent. You kept us all entertained.

by Anonymousreply 5407/30/2013

She was a brilliant talent. Had so much more to give, before that terrible car accident sidelined her or years. She was really never the same . RIP beuatiful lady.

by Anonymousreply 5507/30/2013

[quote]your reaction seems a little over the top. What's your deal?

I don't have a deal, I don't appreciate some asshole pissing on fond remembrances of a talented actress.

by Anonymousreply 5607/30/2013

She delivered my favorite line from "Murder By Death" -

"I'll tell you later......it's disgusting"

by Anonymousreply 5707/30/2013

One of those actors, matter what she was in, you always remembered her. Bravo Goldie and Sean! Thanks for memories and woe to the Academy if they overlook her at next years awards!

by Anonymousreply 5807/30/2013

R37, I'm not a huge film buff, and I'm just shy of 40. Many will know her from Private Benjamin and Clue easily. She may not have been the biggest star, but many know her name quite easily. I don't know much about her work besides those movies, but from them knew her to be worth watching. Will and Grace also spread her name, and who didn't watch that? Man, was she good. RIP, Mrs. Peacock.

by Anonymousreply 5907/30/2013

A very talented and memorable performer. RIP Eileen

by Anonymousreply 6007/31/2013

Private Benjamin is on Encore as I type!
