Netflix Original Series: Orange is the New Black

Black comedy adapted from the memoir of the same name by Piper Kerman, about a nice girl who ended up serving a prison sentence for money laundering.

Stars Taylor Schilling from those awful Atlas Shrugged movies as Piper, Kate Mulgrew as a tough Russian inmate, Natasha Lyonne, playing against type as a lesbian junkie, That 70s Show's Laura Prepon as Piper's ex-girlfriend who introduced her to a life of crime, and Jason Biggs as Piper's loyal fiancé, waiting for her to get out.

At least give it a shot. It had some nice pitch-black comedy moments, and Mulgrew and Lyonne are both great.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 17710/10/2014

Bump. It's worth a look.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 107/11/2013

It's getting raves, I can't wait.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 207/11/2013

I'm in....

by The Voice of the Nightreply 307/11/2013

Good show, it's a bonus to see Laura Pepon as a lesbian drug dealer.

Years ago in the San Francisco of the 80s...I knew a lovely petite lesbian who flew to Columbia a lot. Her job was to deliver cash and to bring back Cocaine.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 407/11/2013

Laura Prepon has great tits.

Kate Mulgrew is Emmy-worthy.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 507/11/2013

I know Natasha Lyonne is basically playing an exaggerated version of herself, but she was my favorite thing about the first episode.

Netflix clearly likes the show; they ordered a second season before the first premiered.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 607/12/2013

The book was great.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 707/12/2013

I've been thinking about getting streaming Netflix for my computer. It seems like a really good deal. Any problems I should know about?

by The Voice of the Nightreply 807/12/2013

Mulgrew as the kitchen babooshka should win an award for this.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 907/12/2013

Is it me or is Prepon a little flat as an actress?

by The Voice of the Nightreply 1007/12/2013

Watched the first two episodes. Love it so far. Schilling leaves less of an impression than many of the other actresses though.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 1107/12/2013

I'm 7 episodes in. Love it and agree with r11, so many great character actors, it makes Schilling seem bland. She's fine but not a standout.

Best two episodes so far is Crazy Eyes peeing episode and the Chicken Chase one.

Stand out is Captain Janeway as Red. Always liked Kate M.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 1207/12/2013

I've watched 2 episodes and it's much better than I expected based on the trailer. I don't even hate Jason Biggs, for once. Probably will marathon a few more tonight.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 1307/12/2013
I've been thinking about getting streaming Netflix for my computer. It seems like a really good deal. Any problems I should know about?

Technical problems? No. The only thing I can think of is if you try to watch it on your work computer and you're not the network administrator you will need permission from the IT people to download the software you'll need for Netflix.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 1407/12/2013

Thank you, r14.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 1507/12/2013

I just watched the 1st episode.

I liked it a lot. Saw the end of the episode coming from a mile away, though.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 1607/12/2013

We are on episode 7, and we started last night. Really good show. I had no idea Red was Kate Mulgrew.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 1707/12/2013

I agree with the reviews that said this has one of the best female casts in a series ever.

Mulgrew, Crazy Eyes and the tranny are SO FUCKING GOOD!!!

Laura Prepon is not a dynamic actress. She always seems flat. It's her voice. Very monotone. But she looks great with the darker hair and hipster glasses. And her tits are great.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 1807/12/2013

On episode 4. Great so far. Thanks OP for te suggestion

by The Voice of the Nightreply 1907/12/2013

There's something really special about this show. But I'm not feeling Taylor Schilling. She's serviceable, but you would think a role like that could attract a real star. I wonder if Jenji Kohan went with a relative unknown to avoid a Mary-Louise Parker/Elizabeth Perkins type of situation again.

Did this show make the Emmy cut-off date?

by The Voice of the Nightreply 2007/12/2013
Did this show make the Emmy cut-off date?

Nope.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 2107/12/2013

Taylor Schilling reminds me so much of Meg Ryan, in her mannerisms.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 2207/12/2013

I actually get a Reese Witherspoon vibe from Taylor, and her character acts pretty much exactly how I would expect Reese to act in prison (esp. after seeing her drunken arrest video).

by The Voice of the Nightreply 2307/12/2013

The protagonist isn't very likable. Not sure if they did that on purpose or not.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 2407/12/2013

I couldn't make it through the first episode. Nobody I could relate to or have any sympathy for.

Lots of tits in episode 1. For those who have gone beyond there, any cock shown anywhere? I'm sure there's a guard fucking someone and Jason Biggs showed his before, I'm sure he would again.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 2507/12/2013

Watching it. Like it. Did a project with Laverne Cox (the t-girl) a few years back. She's a sweetheart. Schilling is BORING.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 2607/12/2013
Lots of tits in episode 1.

Didn't Jodie Foster direct the pilot?

by The Voice of the Nightreply 2707/12/2013

There's no cock. But the actor who plays Porn Stache shows his flat ass.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 2807/12/2013
Did this show make the Emmy cut-off date?

Does it count? It's not network television.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 2907/12/2013

Jodie Foster directed episode 3. The episode that focused on Sofia aka the transsexual characters backstory.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 3007/12/2013

Am I the only one who thinks Jason Biggs has matured into a bearish hottie?

Mulgrew is just plain great. I've always liked her but became a huge fan after I saw her play Kate Hepburn in a play about 9 yrs ago.

And Lin Tucci from SHOWGIRLS!!!!!

I agree that Taylor is bland

by The Voice of the Nightreply 3107/12/2013
Does it count? It's not network television.

Netflix series are Emmy eligible.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 3207/12/2013

Taylor Schilling sounds EXACTLY like another actress, but I cannot figure out who and it is driving me nuts.

HELP ME DL.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 3307/12/2013

Now I love Kate Mulgrew even more.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 3407/12/2013

OMG. I loved the pilot. Thanks VotN for steering me towards this!

by The Voice of the Nightreply 3507/12/2013

Ryan's Hope theme music keeps running through my head. Damn it!

by The Voice of the Nightreply 3607/12/2013

do you get to see Jason Biggs' pee pee?

by The Voice of the Nightreply 3707/12/2013

Oh, ignorant DL queens..

VOTN - good call

by The Voice of the Nightreply 3807/12/2013

We don't, R37. Sorry. But he shows it in close-up in American Reunion.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 3907/12/2013

What happened between Mary Louise Parker and Elizabeth Perkins?

by The Voice of the Nightreply 4007/12/2013
Am I the only one who thinks Jason Biggs has matured into a bearish hottie?

I've always found Biggs to be hot, but holy shit, yes. He is definitely aging well.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 4107/13/2013

I think I read Jason is not Jewish, which was a big surprise to me.

I do wonder if he's naturally hairless or shaves his chest.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 4207/13/2013

OMG, I'm in love with this show! On episode 3 now....

by The Voice of the Nightreply 4307/13/2013

How do I watch it on Netflix if I'm not a subscriber?

by The Voice of the Nightreply 4407/13/2013

R44, you can't. Just like you can't watch Game of Thrones on HBO if you don't have HBO.

You could download it from something like Piratebay and watch it, though. But Netflix is only $8 a month and totally worth it. Or you could just watch the show then cancel.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 4507/13/2013

I'm watching it now. It's great. Love creepy Natasha Lyonne. Crazy Eyes is hilarious. I think they make the main character a little unlikable on purpose. It's much funnier to see an annoying yuppie girl having weird trashy problems than someone that is completely nice.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 4607/13/2013

I get an Amy Sedaris vibe from Taylor

by The Voice of the Nightreply 4707/13/2013

R44, you can get a free trial of Netflix if you've never used it before... But for only $8/month, Netflix is worth it....

by The Voice of the Nightreply 4807/13/2013

I loved Taylor Schilling on that alcoholic Irish nurse show that got cancelled. But damn does she look older than she is. Her aunt had a really creepy tribute video of her up on YouTube full of all these childhood and teenage photos of her, maybe it's still up, but she's definitely the age she claims to be despite how quickly her face is aging.

Haven't watched the show yet, but the premise sounds like Jenji is ripping off the whole Nancy goes to prison arc of Weeds.

r8, just hook your computer up to your TV with an HDMI cable and whatever adapter you need for your particular computer. There's no reason to watch movies on a laptop screen unless you have no choice.

r44, you can watch it at the link below, just click on each episode and then click on Show All Search Results and it'll give you a list of many sites where you can watch each episode

by The Voice of the Nightreply 4907/13/2013

I think you're being too hard on Taylor Schilling. Yes, she's bland, but her character is the pivot point all the crazy weirdness revolves around. She really doesn't have much to do except react and do her fish out of water routine, but she does a good job of that.

You give that role to someone stronger and they'll instantly overpower the supporting cast.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 5007/13/2013

The guard Bennett is super cute.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 5207/13/2013

So far, I like Taylor Schilling.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 5307/13/2013

Another vote for Taylor.

If she played too strong, it would become a farce.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 5407/13/2013

Why are there so many straight men here commenting on Laura Prepon's tits? Sit in the back and stay quiet, breeders.

I might watch this, if only to see how Kate Mulgrew does. It would be nice to see her in something else besides "Voyager".

by The Voice of the Nightreply 5507/13/2013

Finished watching the whole "season" this morning.

I really enjoyed the show and am looking forward to the next season.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 5607/13/2013

Taylor is so meh.

Everyone else is excellent but it feels like she's left behind. She's had great opportunities to show her chops but she comes off as ordinary, replaceable actress. So many good moments and its slips away. If I had to choose a weak spot, it's her.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 5707/13/2013

Taylor's main qualification is her willingness to show her boobs and sit naked on the toilet, etc.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 5807/13/2013

"her willingness to show her boobs"

Well, you lost me there...

by The Voice of the Nightreply 5907/13/2013

I don't know how many straight men are commenting on the willingness to show boobs....but I also had these thoughts.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 6007/13/2013

Well, boobs are everywhere these days, so I guess it can't be helped. Has the show been renewed for another season?

by The Voice of the Nightreply 6107/13/2013

R61, yes it has.
I might watch this, if only to see how Kate Mulgrew does. It would be nice to see her in something else besides "Voyager".

She's fucking BRILLIANT. I've never seen her in anything other than NTSF, which you should watch if you like Mulgrew and want to see her in something hilariously ridiculous.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 6207/13/2013

The actress playing the abortion clinic shooter is pretty spectacular as well.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 6307/13/2013

Can women wear makeup in prison?

by The Voice of the Nightreply 6407/13/2013

I'm pretty sure they can order makeup from the commissary.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 6507/13/2013

What crime did Red commit?

by The Voice of the Nightreply 6607/13/2013

Why is Natasha Lyonne only credits as Guest Starring. She's great btw

I love the dynamic between the Hispanic mom and daughter. I love Red. I love Sophia. I love Crazy Eyes and the blonde wigga and the big fat butch dyke and big chested Jason Biggs. I like Piper.

I hate binge watching but I'm doing it with this show and I've done it with every other Netflix series. It's gonna feel so long between seasons!

by The Voice of the Nightreply 6707/14/2013

I bet the one legged guard fucked the mother.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 6807/14/2013

Oh, and I really enjoy the flashbacks with Taylor Schilling and Laura Prepon looks great with the glasses. Remember back when she was being considered to play Mary Jane in Spider-Man? The Sam Raimmi one? That would have been ridiculous!

by The Voice of the Nightreply 6907/14/2013

I just finished the third episode. I'm hooked on this show but I have one question. Do they ever tell you the actual crime the other characters committed that got them incarcerated?

by The Voice of the Nightreply 7007/14/2013

R70, yes for many of them.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 7107/14/2013

Thanks r71! :-)

by The Voice of the Nightreply 7207/14/2013

Well, the Haitian lady killed at least one man....and cleaned up afterward!

by The Voice of the Nightreply 7307/14/2013

This ain't The help, bitch, but you will eat my shit!

by The Voice of the Nightreply 7407/14/2013
The only thing I can think of is if you try to watch it on your work computer and you're not the network administrator you will need permission from the IT people to download the software you'll need for Netflix.

Watch it on your iPhone.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 7507/14/2013

Though hopefully this means then that Lyonne can get Guest Actress Emmy and Kate Mulgrew can get Supporting Actress.

Is this Comedy or Drama?

by The Voice of the Nightreply 7607/14/2013

Is Laura Prepon gay?

by The Voice of the Nightreply 7707/14/2013
Is this Comedy or Drama?

It would probably be submitted for Comedy, like Shameless or Desperate Housewives. They usually seem to focus on the latter half of dramedy portmanteau.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 7807/14/2013

I watched the first episode...

Hated the main character, as well as Natasha Lyonne's. The supporting players were all pretty entertaining.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 7907/14/2013

At least give the second episode a shot. It gives Red's (Mulgrew) backstory, and she's hilarious in it.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 8007/14/2013

R77 I've never heard anything about Prepon being gay.

She is 5'10"...and she scared the shit out of me in the movie "Karla".

by The Voice of the Nightreply 8107/14/2013

What crime did the trans person commit? Identity theft?

by The Voice of the Nightreply 8207/14/2013

Credit card fraud r82

by The Voice of the Nightreply 8307/14/2013

Taryn Manning just "goes there" doesn't she?

by The Voice of the Nightreply 8407/14/2013

Wouldn’t cable dramedies like this and Shameless work better as 30 minute shows, like Nurse Jackie. I would love to watch Shameless but I can only take 30 minutes of that funny, yet trifling family. Because of its prison setting, I feel the same about Orange is the New Black. I’m enjoying this show but sometimes great things come in small doses.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 8507/14/2013

Outstanding writing and acting from everyone but I watched too much at one sitting and it depressed me. I knew it was happening but I just couldn't stop myself.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 8607/14/2013

So far I'm loving it...up to episode 9. The 45 minute format seems OK.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 8707/15/2013

I think the running time is perfect. I wish they made more episodes though.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 8807/15/2013

And maybe it's because I know he's hot in real life, but Pornstache does it for me.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 8907/15/2013

I'm sort of dying to know who the real Alex is. Is she still in jail?

by The Voice of the Nightreply 9007/16/2013

R90, the real Alex is described as "short and looking a like a French Bulldog" in Piper Kermans memoir. I think we are all better off not knowing who she really is or where.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 9107/16/2013

R91,

I'll be honest--I'm curious. Since the real Piper is in her 40s now, the real Alex (or "Nora") would have to be in her 50s.

I love the show (and the Marisa Tomei character), but I find the real Piper sort of insufferable.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 9207/16/2013

How much sex, nudity, and drug use is in this show?

The more of all 3 it has, the more likely it will be to win awards.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 9307/16/2013

I just finished watching the season. I cant get over how good it is. It's a bunch of actresses showcasing their talents and very weird charm. I hope show goes on for many seasons. How do they make money, if it is only available on Netflix?

This is pretty much what a spinoff of The L Word should have been, but could never be.

I love to hate the nasty little Christian girl "Pennsatucky."

by The Voice of the Nightreply 9407/16/2013

What does Marisa Tomei have to do with this show?

by The Voice of the Nightreply 9507/16/2013

R95,

The little Italian one that drives the van--Nicky's girlfriend--has almost exactly the same voice (in timbre and accent) that MT had in Cousin Vinny.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 9607/16/2013

I'm hooked, on episode 9. Also "binge watching" (love this term) but, trying to pace myself. I absolutely am happy to see Natasha Lyonne back. I've been rooting for her and always been a fan. The show is campy, risqué, quirky, gay, some great one-liners and is receiving excellent praise as it should. It's nice to see a cute lez couple on screen. Agree about Schilling but she's growing on me.

"fuck you, named after some bullshit cake with cream in the middle"

by The Voice of the Nightreply 9707/16/2013
How do they make money, if it is only available on Netflix?

As Netflix starts to produce more and more of its own programming, they're less and less dependent on licensing deals with fickle studios. So, in effect, they transition, slowly away from being a channel that shows reruns (like TVLand was when it launched) to being a channel that uses its original programming to attract subscribers, like HBO.

I think we finally are truly looking at the beginning of the end of the traditional model of media consumption.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 9807/16/2013

We're also working our way through the first series (I switched from DVDs to streaming for it), and loving the cast & stories.

I'm glad it's set in a minimum security institution, because while the women are criminals, they are mostly there for non-violent crimes. When the screwdriver went missing, I was thinking it would be used in an Oz-style shanking, but the reveal at the end of the episode was perfect. (Please don't tell me if it shows up again...we're not that far in, so to speak). Coincidentally, we also binge-watched Oz.

Natasha Lyonne is really quite good, she's the standout for me (Laura Prepon is not that good...though playing opposite Lyonne, she got much better), along with the actress playing Miss Claudette, and the actress playing Crazy Eyes is really good. Also: Lea DeLaria playing a role she's perfect for.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 9907/16/2013

It kind of is the perfect sort of series though.

For straight men, there's girl-on-girl action.

For gay men, there are strong female characters played by terrific actresses.

For straight women, there are strong female characters played by terrific actresses.

For lesbians, there are strong female characters played by terrific actresses AND girl-on-girl action.

Everyone wins!

by The Voice of the Nightreply 10007/16/2013
How much sex, nudity, and drug use is in this show?

Surprisingly little considering that it's a show about caged lesbians. A few bare breasts in the early episodes and some drug use, but nothing really graphic on either front. I'm on the last episode, and the whole season shows shows fewer tits than one episode of Game of Thrones.

Michelle Hurst steals the show as Miss Claudette, and Samira Wiley as the track star will go places because of this exposure.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 10107/16/2013
Coincidentally, we also binge-watched Oz.

Jesus Christ, I bet that was a depressing weekend. Were you hiding a sharpened toothbrush under your pillow by the time you were done?

by The Voice of the Nightreply 10207/16/2013

Everyone is so brilliant it's hard to pick a standout. Australian actress Yael Stone is particularly good as Morello and crazy eyes is brilliant.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 10307/16/2013

R91 in the book, did Nora and Piper meet in prison?

by The Voice of the Nightreply 10407/16/2013

R100 from what I've seen, most straight guys don't like the show.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 10507/16/2013

Nora was a friend of Piper's house mate. You can download a sample of the book (first 61 pages) on iTunes.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 10607/16/2013

R99 She's not the best in the show I agree but there are actually scenes later on where she's very good. Dismissed this when I first saw a trailer but I think it might be one of the best shows I've seen in a long time. Kate Mulgrew is one of the highlights for me and Morello makes me think of Brittany Murphy for some reason.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 10707/16/2013

R91...I meant were they both incarcerated at the same place and time...or is the TV show creating that drama?

by The Voice of the Nightreply 10807/16/2013

Yes, R108, the show is creating that drama. The book is more a starting point for the show. I agree with all who think it's great and can't wait for the next season.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 10907/16/2013

Love crazy eyes. She steals every scene she's in

by The Voice of the Nightreply 11007/16/2013

Yes, as above, Nora was a friend of Piper's roommate.

The two didn't meet up at prison proper--Piper was at Danbury, Nora somewhere in Kansas. They were brought together at a holding jail in Chicago for a few weeks so they could both testify against another guy who was a part of Nora's circle, but were sent back to their assigned prisons immediately after testifying.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 11107/16/2013

So, which of the inmates would have the best time at Michfest?

I mean, clearly they wouldn't let Sophia in, but other than that...

I would assume Big Boo would be a natural at the Butch Strut.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 11207/16/2013

I've 'Big Boo' in other acting roles. She has quite a career going!

by The Voice of the Nightreply 11307/16/2013

Lea DeLaria has a long career as a stand-up comic and a regular role as playing incredibly butch lesbians, as she's quite qualified for the part.

She also had a recurring role (as a lesbian) on DL's soap, One Life to Live.

When they revived Rocky Horror on Broadway ten, fifteen years ago, she played Eddie.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 11407/16/2013

And she's probably actually performed at MichFest, now that I'm thinking about it.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 11507/16/2013

R104, yes they did. In Piper Kermans 11th month of incarceration. They first met in Northhampton where an openly bisexual Piper was rooming with a lesbian couple. They were all mutual friends when Piper and Nora became involved.

Obviously, R106 and R109 aren't me.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 11607/16/2013

Lea DeLaria is having the time of her life. We went to see her show with Maggie Cassella the other night at Dixon Place and she told a story about how she's being recognized on the subway and in the street now, and she's getting some of the best reviews of her career.

She knows she's got a great gig with great exposure and she's freakin' thrilled.

(NB: Lea/Maggie's show runs Fri/Sat nights at Dixon Place in NYC through the end of the month)

by The Voice of the Nightreply 11707/16/2013

OK, I'm done with the season. I won't give spoilers, but let's just say that the final episode ramped up the stakes more than a little bit, and there had best be a fucking payoff next season.

When she was doing WEEDS, Jenji Kohan had a nasty habit of spending half a season creating something, and then dispatching with it in the first 10 minutes of the following season so she could move on to something else.

She better not pull that stunt here.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 11807/17/2013

R117, how is Delaria's act? I've hated her for years, but honestly I can't remember why. It's really stupid.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 11907/17/2013

I agree, R118. The upside to that, though, was that when a storyline wasn't working, she realized it pretty quickly, and got rid of it. That's what I really like about this show. There are close to no storylines that don't work and, for an hour-long show, that's pretty impressive. The only weak spot is Piper's brother and his love interest, but that's really just splitting hairs.

I do wish that a more engaging actress played Piper. Sarah Michelle Gellar would've been excellent in the role. But I have a feeling she and Jenji Kohan would feud like nobody's business.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 12007/17/2013

I loved Taystee correcting the grammar on the note that read "Your Gonna Die".

by The Voice of the Nightreply 12107/17/2013

I don't know if anyone is interested, but this is an interesting account of one guy's two-year stint in supermax--

by The Voice of the Nightreply 12207/17/2013

Perish the though r120. If SMG was involved, I don't think I would have given this show a chance.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 12307/17/2013

It was a bit slow starting for me. Initially, I imagined that it would be along the lines of SCRUBS, and I thought that the laughs were few and far between. When I understood that it was much more serious than a basic comedy or satire, I was into by the third ep. I like the manner in which the backstories are interwoven into the present day for most of the characters (thus far) without going overboard.

Overall, the acting is strong. The actress who plays Piper has grown on me, and she does a good job in her role. Crazy Eyes is effin’ hilarious – I swear, that actress seems classically trained. Taystee is also funny (and strong). I like Prepon as Alex. She reminds me of a live Daria, and her delivery works well. I also like Fig and Pensatucky – as horrible as they are. Again, the actors playing those roles are terrific.

I’m certain to be attacked for daring to post anything less than glowing about Kate Mulgrew; however, she’s overrated as Red. All I see is Mulgrew attempting to pull off a Slavic accent, and I don’t lose myself in her character. I was much more intrigued by how she’s physically aged over the years rather than her performance.

As for Piper’s brother and his fiancée: their argument about lifestyle was one of my favorite scenes (and her acting was good) of the entire season.

Thank you to the OP for bringing the series to my attention. I don't know that I would have given it a chance otherwise.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 12407/17/2013

I definitely think Crazy Eyes is classically trained, R124. She spouts off Shakespeare in a later episode and it's awesome.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 12507/17/2013

Add me to the list of people who think Crazy Eyes is a classically trained actress. Her Shakespeare is too impressive not to be.

I love Natasha Lyonne in this. Also love Taryn Manning and think she's totally nailing the backwoods Jesus freak thing. Can't believe she's 35 years old in real life. I hate the way people on the show are mispronouncing "Pennsyltucky" (as "Pennsatucky") though.

I totally agree; could have written that myself. If anything, besides the lead actress, she's the [italic] least [/italic] impressive cast member. She's playing Red as a cliche and it's kind of hammy.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 12607/18/2013

Uzu Aduba (Crazy Eyes) just finished the run of Venice at the Public Theater. She was also in the recent revival of Godspell and has been nominated for The Helen Hays Award and the IRNE.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 12707/18/2013

Lea DeLaria got great reviews as Hildy in the On the Town revival in the late '90s.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 12807/18/2013

Great suggestion Op.

Also, another good series on Netflix:Lilyhammer

A mobster (Sil from the Sopranos) turns FBI informant and relocates to Lilyhammer Pretty good, so far!

by The Voice of the Nightreply 12907/18/2013

God, when does the next season come out?

by The Voice of the Nightreply 13007/18/2013

I get a Helen Slater vibe from Schilling. Though her voice reminds me of Makin Akerman.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 13107/18/2013

As I got deeper into the series, I warmed up to her a lot.

I have to give the show a lot of credit for handling Sophia's story as well as they did. I'm always reticent to say anything trans-positive here, because the vox populi can be as vicious as Michfest when it comes to transgender issues, but I thought Laverne Cox did an amazing job with her.

I also thought Tanya Wright did awesomely as her wife.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 13207/18/2013

Wait... Taryn Manning is in this? From the early 2000's band Boomkat? I used to love her and her brother Kellen, back in the day.
Wouldn’t cable dramedies like this

"This" is not on cable.

And isn't Laura Prepon a Xenu-worshipper?

by The Voice of the Nightreply 13407/18/2013

Watching the first episode now. Can someone tells me if this turns into one of those "Does she choose the boy or the girl" stories?

by The Voice of the Nightreply 13507/18/2013

R135, no.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 13607/18/2013

Thanks, r136.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 13707/18/2013

I love Crazy Eyes and her lily-white parents. "But Mommy, I LIKE my hair like this."

by The Voice of the Nightreply 13807/18/2013

Matt Mcgorry is fucking beautiful. I did a google image search but he looks far better in the show than in any still photos.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 13907/18/2013

R134, yes, she's a Scientologist and she's a fucking terrible actress. Worst casting choice on the whole show. Ruins the Piper/Alex relationship entirely. She's absolutely awful and clearly the makeup department hates her too so aren't bothering to do anything about her huge eye bags. I hope they kill her off quickly. Pablo Schreiber is in a completely different production than everyone else and no one has bothered to tell him to stop playing broad farce. Biggs is also too ugly and unlikable to care about. What is it about him that Piper found attractive? A no job nebbish whose parents still treat him like a middle schooler. What kind of writer wouldn't have had not only other stories to pitch but no other articles done and waiting in a stack to be offered? The rest of the casting is so good that the missteps in casting those 3 just become even more glaring.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 14007/18/2013

Oh, yeah. Matt is too adorable. I can't blame Daya for wanting a piece of that.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 14107/18/2013

R140, from what I've heard, she brings her own makeup people from the cult, which is supposedly typical of $ members. I do like her on the show however & think she's very pretty. She looks a lot like Katey Sagal.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 14307/18/2013

R143, clearly they aren't professional makeup artists or else they would have done something about those eye bags and eye brows and have made her look less like a wax figure so are they just there to make sure no one tries to deprogram her? Why would anyone hire a Scientologist when they come with so much baggage, eye and otherwise, especially when they can't even act? Prepon has no emotional range beyond slightly annoyed and little bit bored and one vocal cord.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 14407/18/2013
Pablo Schreiber is in a completely different production than everyone else and no one has bothered to tell him to stop playing broad farce.

Thank you. I was thinking I was the only one who had a problem with him. He's in his own little world doing a bad Smokey and the Bandit routine and he kills every scene he's in.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 14507/18/2013

Agree that Mulgrew is overrated as Red, Schreiber is from another production altogether, and that Crazy Eyes and Tiffany are great characters embodied perfectly by those actresses. I also think that Prepon's acting style (limited or not) is perfect for Alex; I like her a lot in the role. And, while Schilling/Biggs chemistry is non-existent, that between Schilling and Prepon is off the charts!

by The Voice of the Nightreply 14607/19/2013

I rarely post but have to say along with everyone else that this is one of the best shows I have ever seen! Next year it deserves to be nominated for every award possible.

I believe the fact that Taylor/Biggs have no chemistry was probably planned. Whoever did the casting for this did an almost 100% job.(With the exception of a few mentioned here). The whole cast plays well off each other. Can't wait for the second season.

Also, does anyone think that Taylor S looks like the actress that plays Mary from Downton?(with Blond hair)

by The Voice of the Nightreply 14707/19/2013

This show has ruined my life, but in a good way. R147, this has also quickly become one of my all-time faves. I honestly have no idea how I'm going to wait until next summer for more episodes.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 14807/19/2013

I appreciate the script. Actual character development.

People do things for reasons. Story arcs.

I'm in heaven.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 14907/19/2013

I've watched the first four episodes. Somebody please tell me the tall pervy asshole guard that keeps feeling women up gets some karmic retribution this season. I despise him so much.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 15007/21/2013

Patty Mayonnaise is in prison?!

by The Voice of the Nightreply 15107/21/2013

Hey guys, this is how I felt about Orphan Black! I marathoned the whole season, and dont know how I'm gonna wait until Spring 2014 to see season 2!

Which is better? Has anyone seen Orphan Black and this? How do they compare?

by The Voice of the Nightreply 15207/21/2013

Jodie Foster directed episode 3.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 15307/21/2013

This is too weird. Thread disappears for a month then comes back.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 15508/19/2013

SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT

But before spoiler, I really love the actress who plays Poussey. What a lovely face. And I looked up Trisha on IMDB. The actress is gorgeous! . . . .

Just watched the season finale last night. Do you think the final scene ended in death or just injury?

Oh, and eff you, Healy.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 15609/30/2013

Taryn Manning was promoted to series regular, so unless they're going to do some kind of "Weekend At Bernie's" tribute with her corpse, she's going to survive.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 15709/30/2013

I am so unbelievably, incredibly, disappointingly underwhelmed in this series. I've been binge-watching, and mostly, it just makes me uncomfortable. There is terrible acting, incredibly predictable and trite plot points, and I fucking HATE the flashback device.

I do not understand why everyone is fucking creaming their yeasty panties over this. I'd SO much rather be watching OZ.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 15810/02/2013

When will season 2 be available?

by The Voice of the Nightreply 15910/02/2013

I think the actor who plays Healey is awesome. He starts off chummy and a bit silly and then ... Well, no spoilers.

Piper was a fucking idiot to go off on him like that in solitary. In prison, you toady to any staff who might help you. Within limits, of course. You don't rat on other prisoners, but other than that, you take help where you can get it.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 16010/02/2013

Love so much of the acting in this; the supporting cast is fantastic. Love all the clicks and rivalries. At first I thought it was Maggie Wheeler who played the prison administrator until I looked it up.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 16110/02/2013
Love all the clicks

Clicks are computer noises, not groups of people.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 16210/02/2013

Well, R160, they established Piper had "a temper" and if you remember, she completely lost it right after he called Alex (her True Love) "sick." Of course, it was idiotic to go off on him like that, which she quickly realized, but she wasn't thinking, she was reacting emotionally.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 16310/02/2013

R33 - I was thinking either Teri Polo or Amber Valetta...?

by The Voice of the Nightreply 16410/02/2013

Pics from the upcoming second season, which debuts June 6th:

by The Voice of the Nightreply 16503/15/2014

Just binge watched this show. I think I am the only person on the planet who thinks this show is way overrated and kinda dumb.

I much prefer House of Cards.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 16604/28/2014

r166 You're not alone. The lead is overrated too. Completely devoid of charisma and look inbred. I do understand why the lesbians and straight guys are attracted to the show.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 16704/28/2014

R166, I'm right there with you. I binged watched until the episode where Piper sees a chicken...then I just gave up. The show is nowhere near as good as the hype would lead you to believe, but the hipsters like it so....

by The Voice of the Nightreply 16804/28/2014

r166 Another one here. I don't get the appeal of this show either. The characters are so one-dimensional and the story lines are boring and uninteresting.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 16904/28/2014

niiiice tits on those girls!

by The Voice of the Nightreply 17004/28/2014

The characters are NOT one-dimensional IF you keep watching. That's the point of the show. There's a lot of humanity beneath the surface. You don't really know someone until you really know them.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 17104/28/2014

r170 Prepon has nice tits. Schilling has no titties.

r166 I agree, after watching OiTNB I think my IQ dropped a bit. The story lines are boring and uninteresting. I kinda get why it's more popular than HoC. It has porn-appeal and it doesn't challenge the viewers in terms of needing a lot of brain cells to follow the show.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 17204/29/2014

Actually Schilling has TV titties R172

by The Voice of the Nightreply 17310/10/2014

Why are gay men so interested in a show that has no gay male storylines?

by The Voice of the Nightreply 17410/10/2014

Because it's got a bunch of great characters played by terrific actresses.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 17510/10/2014

R175 Oh, I see. Well, it's too bad you can't give this kind of support to the projects of fellow gay men.

by The Voice of the Nightreply 17610/10/2014
[R175] Oh, I see. Well, it's too bad you can't give this kind of support to the projects of fellow gay men.

Can you name one? Plenty of us watched "Looking."
