Forbes: Kids Getting Their First Look At Internet Porn At Age 11

Am I the only one who calls bullshit on this? I bet kids as young as 8 are looking at online porn. How many parents actually have Net Nanny installed on their computers? Kids even have internet access on their phones now. This study was done back in 2005.

Parents out there, are you monitoring your kids internet usage? Can you even do that successfully? Kids can go over to other kids' homes and look at pornography there. Have you caught your kids looking at porn? Parents really have a lot of responsibility now thanks to the internet age. More than ever before. You don't know who your kids are chatting with. Most parents are too overworked to look after their kids for the amount of time needed to keep them safe.

Look, I know previous generations post-web looked at porn via magazines at an early age, but didn't have the type of pornography that's readily accessible via the web.

Parents here, how are you handling this? Are you checking the History on your computer(s)? Do your kids have their own computers?

When I was a kid, there would always porn mags laying around in the woods. I wonder who put them there.

I looked at internet porn in 1996 when I was 12. It was pretty primitive compared to today. But you could find hardcore stuff through some search engines (hotbot) and in newsgroups. The pics were usually small but it really didn't matter with those 14 inch CRT screens.

`Kids even have internet access on their phones now`. Are you posting from 2003?

OP? The article clearly states that 11 is "the average age". Do you understand how averages work? It's not saying every child views internet porn for the first time at age 11. It says the average age at which that occurs is age 11.

So, yes, cupcake...you can "bet kids as young as 8 are looking at online porn". No one said they aren't.

[quote]You can't get on the web without passing porn.

That's a stretch. I think the average 11 year-old could research a homework assignment without passing porn. I go online constantly to check the news, weather and social media and I never encounter unexpected porn.

However, LOOKING for porn, or finding it when you search for it, is extremely easy, and age is certainly no barrier.

Yeah, but look at the unfortunate search results than could come from things as innocuous as

Deep Throat (the Watergate source)

Black holes (in space)

Teen (almost anything)

Beavers

Facials

etc.

Father of a 12 year old girl here.

We have never censored anything. What's the point? If you make something out of bounds, that's what she will be curious about, there is no way to keep her away from the stuff anyway.

Sometimes it is helpful. When she starts her periods, it won't be some big mystery. She already googled it. Same with dealing with homophobia -- she sees what activity is out there and it fills in some gaps in knowledge.

With the right supervision at home and in school, she is not going to be sexually active, in an inappropriate way, too early.

Now if she started watching Fox News, reading up on Ayn Rand, neo-liberal economics, or libertarian nonsense, then I might be concerned.

It'll be interesting to see what the psychological effect will be on kids who've been exposed to this a decade from now. I got my first computer with web access at 13. Needless to say, porn searching was #1 thanks to Usenet.

As said, porn being your primary sexual teacher has to fuck you up a bit, and remember, sex with animals, and all sorts of crazy shit is out there. It's not just 'normal' sex.

I wonder how many are being exposed to homosexual sex, making them more comfortable with the concept. If you're a kid who's looked at porn, no doubt you've witnessed anal.

All these rapes that keep happening, I wonder if internet porn has anything to do with it. The girls are not treated respectfully. It's amazing that kids know what bukkake is, and dp.

r16, a girl is different from a boy. Not PC, but it's the truth.

iPhones came about in 2007, hon. Before that, internet browsing was extremely limited on phones, and you didn't have to give phones to your kids that had it. Everyone has iPhones with Wifi.

The problem with kids and porn is that boys are getting a really warped idea of what sex with a female is about -- porn is not real, it's a male fantasy. I feel for those poor girls who have to deal with these dumb boys.

by Anonymousreply 2007/13/2013

Now you know why every boy who sprouts a pubic hair or armpit hair shaves it immediately.
