Charlie Chaplin

Marilyn Monroe

James Garner

by Anonymousreply 707/09/2013

The fact that you had to go that far back in time, R8, lends credence to the idea that show business is for trustafarians nowadays.

by Anonymousreply 807/09/2013

Brad Pitt & Johnny Depp

by Anonymousreply 907/09/2013

There's a lot of distance between "from nothing" and trustafarian. I'd say anyone from a working class or even middle class background did not have any particular advantage.

I'll try to be current for R9.

by Anonymousreply 1107/09/2013

by Anonymousreply 1607/09/2013

R16, I started this thread by request of another poster on the stars who came from wealth and privilege. I try to be a very nice, helpful person.

by Anonymousreply 1707/09/2013

Hugh Jackman went to the Australian version of an English public school (i.e. prep school in US). Just saw an old interview with him on 60 Minutes last week.

by Anonymousreply 1807/09/2013

Charles Bronson came from Pennsylvania coal country, and his family was so poor (that had lots of children, and he was the eldest boy) he once had to wear a hand-me-down dress to school because he had outgrown everything else.

Charlize Theron and her mother lived in their car for a while.

by Anonymousreply 1907/09/2013

You'd think r16 would be ashamed she doesn't even know how to work the "return" button properly.

by Anonymousreply 2007/09/2013

Nathan Lane. His father drank himself to death and his mother was mentally ill.

by Anonymousreply 2107/09/2013

[quote] Charles Bronson came from Pennsylvania coal country, and his family was so poor

Wow, I have to add him to my list of Celebrities I Thought Were Jewish, But Aren't. He supplants Jason Robards as my most recent addition.

by Anonymousreply 2207/09/2013

Viola Davis was truly poor as a child.

by Anonymousreply 2307/09/2013

Barbara Stanwyck had a horrific childhood.

by Anonymousreply 2407/09/2013

I was born a poor black child.

by Anonymousreply 2507/09/2013

Viola Davis had to play a maid just to make ends meet.

by Anonymousreply 2607/09/2013

Joan Crawford

by Anonymousreply 2707/09/2013

My mother was a theatre actress. Can you believe that? She had to do those plays everyday for like months. Unbelievable.

by Anonymousreply 2807/09/2013

Joan Crawford had the worst childhood of any star, past or present, that I have ever heard of.

by Anonymousreply 2907/10/2013

I was born in New Jersey!!! Can you imagine?

by Anonymousreply 3007/10/2013

Horse country?

by Anonymousreply 3107/10/2013

R31, "G," Where is "horse country?" If "M" refers to Meryl Streep, then who's "G?"

by Anonymousreply 3207/10/2013

It's part of secret New Jersey. They breed horses, race horses, have polo matches and go fox hunting.

by Anonymousreply 3307/10/2013

Glenn R31, I grew up in Bernardsville -- NJ horse country, in Somerset County.

And everyone knows, R32, that G is my friend Glenn Close. You knew that, didn't you?

by Anonymousreply 3407/10/2013

How appropriate.

by Anonymousreply 3507/10/2013

R34, I had no idea that "G" stood for Glenn Close.

R33, Actually thought "horse country" was in the South, where they have horse races, if it wasn't in England.

Thanks to both of you.

by Anonymousreply 3607/10/2013

There are many areas that are called horse country for many different reasons. For example, Salisbury, Connecticut was known as horse country until Mamie moved to LA.

by Anonymousreply 3707/10/2013

Not my daughter, you bitch!

by Anonymousreply 3807/10/2013

Demi Moore

by Anonymousreply 3907/10/2013

Charles Durning -- brutHal childhood. Lost five sisters to scarlett fever and small pox. Left home because his mother couldn't feed them all. (His father had died.)

by Anonymousreply 4607/10/2013

That might be your wish, but it doesn't make it true, R46.

by Anonymousreply 4707/10/2013

Luke Evans

by Anonymousreply 4807/10/2013

Mel Gibson. He is still nothing.

by Anonymousreply 4907/10/2013

Wouldn't it be easier to list actors who come from family wealth? At this point, you're just listing every actor alive.

by Anonymousreply 5007/10/2013

[quote] Jessica Chastain

Who's her daddy?

by Anonymousreply 5107/10/2013

Kristen Wiig

Amy Poehler

Tina Fey

by Anonymousreply 5207/10/2013

Patty Duke

by Anonymousreply 5307/10/2013

r9 said Brad Pitt. This is incorrect, BP comes from a well-to-do family. Father owns his own construction firm & mother was a school counselor. They were sending BP money to live, along with BP working.

by Anonymousreply 5407/11/2013

Cynthia Nixon grew up on the UES and attended public school. If she had money she didn't flaunt it. Not sure about SJP.

Diane Lane's mother was in the business (many big stars had parents in the industry, often in smaller capacity).

Rodney Dangerfield was a construction salesman who did well enough to live in the rent-stabilized apartment in which he remained as the UES gentrified in the 1970s.

Sarah Michelle Gellar lived in Yorkville in the 1980s growing up, when it wasn't cheap, but I don't know her exact situation.

A kid I grew up with who was on AMC back in the day had nothing to speak of before he began acting.
