[quote]The Milky Loads scandal

A link to that discussion brought me here, but I can't remember exactly when. 1998? 99?

It was life-changing, anyway; haven't had a productive day since.

by Anonymousreply 507/08/2013

JLo vs. Madonna

by Anonymousreply 607/08/2013

The "George Eads is gay" crowd went silent the day he got married to a woman. The thread was always on the first three pages literally until the day he got married then fell into oblivion.

by Anonymousreply 707/09/2013

That's surprising, R7. Marriage doesn't usually disuade the gaywishers.

by Anonymousreply 807/09/2013

George Eads looks and the popularity of his show both faded drastically too, which also may have added to the ending of the gossip.

by Anonymousreply 907/09/2013

Could one of the old timer DLers please explain both the prancing ponies and their apparent coup of DL?

I've been here for years but don't remember this. What exactly are prancing ponies??

Thanks

by Anonymousreply 1007/09/2013

To R1's point, I know for a fact people have been banned and had their contribution registration revoked for attacking/offending Josh.

I never understood why, but it happened.

by Anonymousreply 1107/09/2013

The Cha-fucking-Lupas...

The Prancing Ponies - I mean, really, what the ever-loving MOTHER-FUCK was that all about???

by Anonymousreply 1207/09/2013

Datalounge forgets nothing.

by Anonymousreply 1307/09/2013

Who is Josh and why was he offended?

by Anonymousreply 1407/09/2013

R10 - the Prancing Pony Inn is a location in LotR...

And...well, you had to be here.

DL and the VERY mentally ill collided...

by Anonymousreply 1507/09/2013

The Ponyprancers were a name given to a group of mostly female fans of the actors in "the Lord of the Rings" who liked to talk about them endlessly after the release of the first film in the trilogy until the third one had finished its release. They were particularly obsessed with Elijah Wood and Dominic Monaghan, whom they were convinced were involved in an ongoing deeply passionate affair. They loved them so much they convinced themselves they would tell their fans about the affair if only they were not sworn to secrecy by their studio, afraid of a homophobic backlash.

The craziness got so bad that many of them were CONVINCED that "Domlijah" (as they referred to the two aggregately) were sending their fans who thought they were gay secret "shout-outs" based on the colors of the clothes they wore to public events, which were first announced here. Someone would post "Creme and gold will never get old," and--sure enough!--the two of them would be photographed in the next two weeks wearing beige and yellow/gold in some combination. (As if people never ever wear beige and yellow/gold within the course of a two week period!)

The obsession about them got so bad that the Webmaster had to create a special separate forum for them called "the Sign of the Prancing Pony" (a chapter in "The Fellowship of the Ring") which gave rise to the habit of the rest of Datalounge scornfully calling them Ponyprancers. As you might expect, they eventually imploded becuase one of them got even nuttier than the others and started feeding them flat-out lies--I forget what her name was or what the specifics were.

You NEVER hear about either Elijah Wood or Dominic Monaghan anymore, but from 2000-2003 discussion of them utterly dominated Datalounge--much more than even the Henry Cavill obsession this year.

by Anonymousreply 1607/09/2013

J"P"G and the EDB are all forgotten now, thankfully

by Anonymousreply 1707/09/2013

Ha, ha, ha, I'll say!

by Anonymousreply 1807/09/2013

Holy FUCK R16, that DOES sound crazy. They sound crazier than the Anderfans, Cavill trolls and those obsessed 'House' show fraus all combined.

I had no idea. I though "Prancing Pony" was a term used for someone constantly riding a self righteous high horse.

by Anonymousreply 1907/09/2013

Poor Josh. We didn't do well by him.

by Anonymousreply 2007/09/2013

They tried to contain the prancing ponies to their own forum for awhile...

by Anonymousreply 2107/09/2013

Noodles and the legion of Noodles-accusers who imagined him behind every post.

by Anonymousreply 2207/09/2013

I miss Lulu, and the way s/he would sign posts.

Shobe would come in and stir things up on a regular basis.

by Anonymousreply 2407/09/2013

r22, the same people are still around. They use the word "troll" for anyone posting an idea they don't like. If 50 people make posts in a thread they don't like, they'll claim it's one "troll."

by Anonymousreply 2507/09/2013

The Cavill stuff is incredibly irritating and ban-worthy, but not nearly as bad as the height of the Anderson shit.

by Anonymousreply 2607/09/2013

Oh, was the DL the first to out Marcia Cross? Did a tabloid pick it up from here?

by Anonymousreply 2707/09/2013

[quote]Billy Masters' blue Batik Speedo

How was that a "brouhaha"? There was an online photo of Billy Masters at a Palm Springs gay event in a Speedo. There was no pro nor con. Everyone just looked and commented on his love handles. No drama. No name-calling.

by Anonymousreply 2807/09/2013

[quote]If 50 people make posts in a thread they don't like, they'll claim it's one "troll."

It's really bizarre how they lump everyone into a single person who doesn't agree with their worshiping of a celeb. They're really messed up and are like mentally unbalanced leftovers from the Prancing Ponies.

by Anonymousreply 2907/09/2013

Even more bizarre is the insistence that anyone who disagrees with them is a paid shill. It's as if they can't even conceive of legitimate disagreement with their precious mind.

by Anonymousreply 3007/09/2013

R29 & R30, let's keep it on topic, okay?

by Anonymousreply 3107/09/2013

r29, I'd say that tactic (calling 50 people a troll) is more popular on the non-celeb/issue threads

by Anonymousreply 3207/09/2013

r31 = the Keep It On Topic Troll.

by Anonymousreply 3307/09/2013

R31? Abide.

by Anonymousreply 3407/09/2013

About a dozen years ago, there was a huge brouhaha over Gov. Jorg Haider when he wanted to keep Muslim immigrants out of Carinthia, Austria. He wanted to shut the borders of his state to immigrants. Some posters totally agreed with his ideas while others called them Nazis. The Nazi accusation was a daily event at DL at that time.

And to the Hall Monitor at R31, if you think there are no brouhahas regarding the "singular" so-called Anderson-hating posters in nearly all Anderson Cooper threads, then you must be a newbie. Okay?

by Anonymousreply 3507/09/2013

For several years, David Ehrenstein would have a meltdown nearly every weekend. It was just something that was expected from him, however, there were times when his madness would extend far beyond Friday and Saturday night and end up as a mega brouhaha into the week. That's when he would make pronouncements that every single person at DL was sick, perverted, and hateful.

There were times when it took awhile for him to get going but other times a simple comment like "Lena Horne is a lesbian" would send him exploding all over everyone and everything.

In May 2001, someone made a comment and D.E. demanded that they provide him with the name of the source. They replied: "The sources are confidential and will remain that way. You should find that easy to understand, David."

He followed with: "I don't find that easy to understand at all. And neither should anyone who's a serious journalist. Unnamed sources mean one thing only -- you're not a writer, you're a pencil."

His pencil remark was real Ehrenstein.

by Anonymousreply 3607/09/2013

[quote]How was that a "brouhaha"? There was an online photo of Billy Masters at a Palm Springs gay event in a Speedo. There was no pro nor con. Everyone just looked and commented on his love handles. No drama. No name-calling.

The brouhaha was on Billy's own site, but it was generated by the thread about him here here. People kept talking about the giant thread here about people making fun of Billy's plump figure (far more than just love handles!) in his Speedo at this public event (his fatness was accentuated by the fact that he kept standing next to ripped porn stars in Speedos who looked great in them), and Billy kept becoming furious when the subject was brought up and would instantly ban anyone who dared to mention it. Then they would limp over here and tell us what had happened.

by Anonymousreply 3707/09/2013

Who was Josh and what did DL do to him, r20?

by Anonymousreply 3807/09/2013

[quote]The brouhaha was on Billy's own site

That's right. It was a brouhaha at the Filth2Go.com website, not at DL where everyone was in agreement regarding his need refrain from wearing a Speedo in public.

His weekly online column usually contained a blind item posted every Monday morning. At the end of the previous week, he would send it via e-mail to gay newspapers that printed his column. One of those people getting that e-mail would post the blind item here at DL on Friday or Saturday, and we would have the whole weekend to figure it out. He was very unhappy that DL was getting the jump on his own publishing due to someone leaking info from his column and posting it here. As with the Speedo, it wasn't a brouhaha here, but DL really impacted his website.

by Anonymousreply 3907/09/2013

R38:

josh = Josh Kilmer-Purcell, of the (eye roll) "Fabulous Beekman Boys"

Before his first book was published he was a regular poster, but eventually he morphed into an insufferable twat. His douchebaggery hit a crescendo when his good friend (epic eye roll) James Frey was busted for stuffing his memoir, A Million Little Pieces, with fictional accounts. josh couldn't wait to brag about one of Oprah's flunkies calling him as part of the show in which she publicly shamed James for betraying her.

ANYWAY!

Some brouhahas that I'll never forget:

Jeanette Walls, who was then a gossip writer for MSNBC, was lifting nuggets from DL and passing them off as her own.

Another one...when EW gave a shoutout to DL, thus causing an influx of straight women from flyover country. The dynamic here has been off ever since.

Keeping bread fresh. Do you keep it out on the counter, in a breadbox, in the fridge, or in the freezer.

It started because some guy and his partner had an argument over keeping bread in the fridge. The guy was satisfied with some of the answers but was floored when he noticed people were still going back and forth a year later.

by Anonymousreply 4707/09/2013

[quote]Serve instant coffee to an overnight guest

Not unless you want them to leave before breakfast.

by Anonymousreply 4807/09/2013

How to properly wipe your ass: back-to-front, or front-to-back.

The front-to-back people insisted that it was the only way one should do it, and if you wiped back-to-front you were definitely going to smear shit all over your nut sack, presumably because you would have no way of stopping the hand momentum. Or something.

The discussion veered off into wet wipes, and how people who used them were crazy because they were relatively untested, and who knew what kind of chemical damage their long-term usage would cause to your butt hole.

Then it veered off into a discussion about how flushing the toilet apparently created some sort of violent explosion on a microscopic level, so if you didn't close the toilet lid first, the flushing action would fling tiny pieces of shit all over the place, including on your toothbrush.

Who knew that people had such strong opinions on these topics.

The death of Anna Nicole Smith. Who did it?

Howard K. Stern vs. Larry Birkhead - which was the baby's father?

[quote]really wish I could know what the others were about - the pony prancers one sounds classic.

You'd think that; but they were inexhaustible, and they completely dominated the entire board for months and months and months. There was no getting away from them--they make the Heath Ledger Loon (currently posting up a storm about the last three Bond movies) look normal and retiring.

by Anonymousreply 5107/09/2013

I loved the Barbara Bel Geddes vs. Kim Stanley thread. That was a lot of fun.

by Anonymousreply 5207/09/2013

r50, those aren't at all in this category.

Pay attention.

by Anonymousreply 5307/09/2013

The "I'm in love with my father-in-law" thread was the est that set a never-reached standard for all others who attempted one.

Many are cold but few are frozen, and the OP of that thread was the frozenest.

Talk about outlandish, compelling seemed-to-be-real schlock. Hundreds of posters (me,too) fell for it and hung on for the ride. About 200 or so posts in, the OP skillfully, subtly changed the tone of the saga, letting you know you'd been had.

The OP stepped forward a few years ago to take a bow. I asked for another installment but he said he'd retired the characters.

by Anonymousreply 5707/10/2013

R53, Della, the "I'm in love with my father-in-law" thread was amazing.

Just reading your synopsis cracked me up. I'd forgotten all about it.

The frozenest, indeed.

[quote]Whether Kirker really clogged a toilet with a giant turd at a party.

Obvious fiction posted by an obvious Scat Troll; never seriously debated, but stupidly believed by a handful of idiots who think everything they see online is true.

Regarding Marcia Cross: what happened was that a fictitious "ABC Insider" posted that Marcia was about to come out and appear on the cover of "The Advocate." The troll also posted some detailed descriptions of what would be happening on future episodes of "Desperate Housewives," in particular the storyline regarding Marcia's TV show son Andrew coming out of the closet. (Like the Marcia-coming-out rumor, all of the purported DH plot turns were complete bullshit.) I forget exactly how events transpired, but the troll's fiction was elaborately detailed enough to garner mentions and links in the online gossip world, which somehow made it out into the mainstream media. The brouhaha ended when Marcia was forced to appear on "The View" and deny all the "vicious online rumors" about her, insisting that there was "no truth" to them. Shortly thereafter, she introduced the public to the man who would later become her husband and the father of her twins. Rather convenient timing, to put it mildly.

Other ones:

*Daytime Dish & the subsequent banning of soap threads. (How has no one mentioned this yet?)

*fa. K, cunts?

*NOT WITHOUT MY FROSTING!

*WeHo/trick/turkey meatballs/one towel.

*"Brokeback Riots," started by the poster "R11 from another thread" (whom IIRC later admitted he suffered from mental illness) as an actual suggestion that gays should riot because "Brokeback Mountain" lost the Best Picture Oscar to "Crash." Although I don't think anyone took the rioting idea seriously, there was certainly widespread anger here that BBM lost the Oscar, some of it because it was then widely believed that Jake Gyllenhaal was the subject of the infamous "Toothy Tile" rumors.

**The "Gale Harold & Randy Harrison are secret lovers" tinhattery -- replete with fictitious stories from a "QAF set insider" (why yes, that *is* the same M.O. as the Marcia Cross rumors! Hmmm...) -- that ceased almost immediately after Michael Musto rebuked them in print, including the announcement that Randy was in a LTR with journalist Simon Dumenco.

by Anonymousreply 6407/12/2013

Yup! Touche.

Thanks Kirker

This has brought back many memories thank you

by Anonymousreply 6507/12/2013

DL went into overdrive about the remake of The Women. It became clear you weren't a "good gay" unless you supported the movie. Then the movie came out and bombed with audiences and the critics, and we never heard about it again.

by Anonymousreply 6607/12/2013

R66, I recall it quite differently. Many on DL were saying that it should never be remade and that the remake would be awful. When it was, it was a rather "I told you so" type thing.

by Anonymousreply 6707/12/2013

It's Prancing Ponies not Pony Prancers.

by Anonymousreply 6807/12/2013

by Anonymousreply 6907/12/2013

kirker, I could have sworn turkey meatballs was in NYC, not Weho. Right?

And, by far, the Prancing Ponies was the most insane DL era evah! It was like a revolution, it was just unfathomable, especially if you didn't care (me) and if you happened to know Dominic (also me).

by Anonymousreply 7007/12/2013

Turkey meatballs was definitely in WeHo.

by Anonymousreply 7107/12/2013

I forgot the bread-in-fridge-or-not war. That was epic. I remember the subplot fight over bread boxes, their purpose (or lack of one), and the fact that some gay people have them. Someone was adamant that no proper gay person would own a bread box, because they were low class and anachronistic, or something like that. Gay people are too sophisticated and fabulous to own bread boxes. OK.

The mayo war was epic, too. I LOVED the Duke's troll, who repeatedly called anyone who didn't use Duke's "trash". Seriously, like a dozen posts calling people trash for not using a mayonnaise that's only available in the southern US. Ooooooooooooooooookay... So much crazy here!

Have we mentioned the shoes-off-or-on war? Apparently this is a great divide as well, people who ask guests to take their shoes off and people who think that's rude, presumptuous and odd. Unlike mayo and bread boxes (which were just amusing), I actually had a dog in that fight. But don't we all? Most of us have our own places and socialize, so it's a "thing" for just about everyone. And as we found out, everyone has an opinion on that one.

I love when a thread becomes a sociology experiment.

by Anonymousreply 7207/12/2013

whether or not SusieLee was really the daughter of Kurt Kaznar (and thus a Hollywood insider with lots of great stories) or just an imposter (with lots of great fake stories).

Kevin Spacey was a very deal here a few years ago. A classic thread of that period was "The first time I had sex with Kevin Spacey".

THE Spacey troll was S.S. Terri who insisted KS was totally straight.

I miss Shobe.

The Prancing Ponies were totally out of control like nothing before or since. A particularly notable case involved a Vanity Fair cover story where DomElijah planned to come out together and declare their undying love for each other.

Didn't happen.

by Anonymousreply 7807/12/2013

The Prancing Ponies also created a tale that the color of the shirts worn by DomElijah to publicity events were shoutouts to the PP's at DL.
