Country singer Randy Travis is in critical condition at a Texas hospital after being admitted Sunday. According to a press release from his publicist, the singer of such hits as Forever and Ever, Amen, On the Other Hand and Three Wooden Crosses is suffering complications of recently acquired viral cardiomyopathy. Viral cardiomyopathy is a weakening of the heart muscles caused by a viral infection.

Sorry, forgot the link.
It's on NBC News and TMZ as well.

Complications of cirrhosis would have been my first guess, yeah.
|by Anonymous||reply 5||07/08/2013|
The photo of Randy on his Facebook page looks like - of all people - David Bromstad.
|by Anonymous||reply 6||07/08/2013|
Hep C can cause it. Have there ever been any rumors about ole Randy and heroin?
|by Anonymous||reply 7||07/08/2013|
Why does Randy always get the ailments of a hobo? Boy must live rough.
If this one doesn't kill him, I won't be surprised to see a Jani Lane-style thread on him here soon.
|by Anonymous||reply 8||07/08/2013|
You may want to have your eyes examined, R6.
|by Anonymous||reply 9||07/08/2013|
If it's cirrhosis, does that mean he has yellow skin?
|by Anonymous||reply 10||07/08/2013|
If it's cirrhosis, does that mean he has yellow skin?
It would be worse if he had yellow skin along with feminine features. Do you think he has feminine features? Does his forehead resemble the beautiful Muffie Potter Aston?
|by Anonymous||reply 11||07/08/2013|
He didn't look well.
|by Anonymous||reply 12||07/08/2013|
He's from the South, R11, so I'm assuming his genitals are MUTILATED.
|by Anonymous||reply 13||07/08/2013|
Oh, dear, r12. Poor Randy is a bit... Eunice Shriver-y there, isn't he?
|by Anonymous||reply 14||07/08/2013|
Because whether you're circumcised is what [italic]really[/italic] matters when you're in critical condition, eh R13?
|by Anonymous||reply 15||07/08/2013|
That's what Barbara Hershey died of in "Beaches". Will Bette Midler wear a big black hat and sing "Wind Beneath My Wings" at Randy's funeral?
|by Anonymous||reply 16||07/08/2013|
"Glory Of Love," r16. The slow, special "Bette" version.
|by Anonymous||reply 17||07/08/2013|
This is sad. He looks ready to drop dead at R12. Hope he pulls through. He lives his music I guess. Forever and ever AMEN!!!
|by Anonymous||reply 18||07/08/2013|
Yes, R13. I am sure that's it. The infection from his circumcision finally caught up to him.
|by Anonymous||reply 19||07/08/2013|
Well with the drunk driving arrests, he's been making the wrong kind of news for several years now. More evidence the closet kills.
|by Anonymous||reply 21||07/08/2013|
Good lord. That is a horrible picture. He has a gigantic head!
|by Anonymous||reply 22||07/08/2013|
Jeez, he looks like the scary preacher from "Poltergeist 2" in that pic at r12.
|by Anonymous||reply 23||07/08/2013|
He always looked kind of "country*," but was not bad looking as a young man.
*which my sister defines as "looks like his parents were first cousins."
|by Anonymous||reply 24||07/08/2013|
Noooo guys, not alcohol, but drugs.
My (educated) guess is meth.
|by Anonymous||reply 26||07/08/2013|
In a sort of unrelated note, I miss country music the way it was back when he was big.
|by Anonymous||reply 27||07/08/2013|
R26, he was a drunk for many years before he explored the wonders of meth. It's unlikely his body will be able to put up much of a fight.
|by Anonymous||reply 28||07/08/2013|
He seems to have excellent teeth, though.
|by Anonymous||reply 29||07/08/2013|
Ironic that his big hit was Forever and ever Amen.
|by Anonymous||reply 30||07/08/2013|
|by Anonymous||reply 32||07/08/2013|
These pictures are making me shout, "Oh, sweet Jesus!"
The guy's probably dead and here I am laughing from nervous shock at his visage.
|by Anonymous||reply 33||07/08/2013|
Peggy Hill would never say that r31
Michelle bachmann would.
|by Anonymous||reply 34||07/08/2013|
I remember when he was the top male vocalist in the whole music business, and that included all genres. In the 80s, he won all the American Music Awards for years.
|by Anonymous||reply 35||07/08/2013|
He seems to have excellent teeth, though.
Veneers do an excellent job of correcting even the worst cases of meth mouth.
|by Anonymous||reply 36||07/08/2013|
I'm sure he paid a lot of money for them, R29. Jesus that R12 pic is horrifying. It's like something jumping out of a coffin in a haunted house.
|by Anonymous||reply 37||07/08/2013|
Cause of death: The Closet.
|by Anonymous||reply 38||07/08/2013|
R34, Randy Travis never stole one of Michelle Bachmanns' songs....husband maybe.
|by Anonymous||reply 39||07/08/2013|
I saw Randy sing live back in the early 90's. He was personable and sang beautifully.
Money does not buy happiness.
|by Anonymous||reply 40||07/08/2013|
It's so fucking sad. I loved his first hit and he seemed like a genuinely good guy.
I hope he's outed soon- for his own sake. As a tale of what the Country closet will do to someone.
|by Anonymous||reply 41||07/08/2013|
His ex-beard/manager outed him when they broke up.
|by Anonymous||reply 42||07/08/2013|
The most recent song upload on his Facebook is...
[italic]"Tonight I'm playing possum".[/italic]
|by Anonymous||reply 43||07/08/2013|
He seems to have excellent teeth, though.
|by Anonymous||reply 44||07/08/2013|
get well soon!
|by Anonymous||reply 45||07/08/2013|
I wonder how he was treated behind the scenes in the country western community.
Don't they alienate the gay people more or less- even if they stay quiet?
|by Anonymous||reply 46||07/08/2013|
I assume his cardiomyopathy stems from his severe alcoholism - the long-term effects of heavy, chronic drinking is a weakened heart.
"Due to the direct toxic effects of alcohol on heart muscle, the heart is unable to pump blood efficiently, leading to heart failure."
In most cases, complete abstinence from alcohol and other dietary and fitness changes can reverse the severity of the condition. GIven Travis' history, this degree of change seems unlikely.
|by Anonymous||reply 47||07/08/2013|
I am a "lurker" on DL and rarely post but there is quite a bit of misinformation on this thread.
I was diagnosed with the same heart ailment 5 years ago. The heart condition could be caused be abusing drugs but is also caused by a virus. People of different ages may get this ailment. I have seen 20 year old women with this illness.
If Randy makes it through the next few days, he will probably be fitted with a pacemaker in the next few weeks. There is no cure for heart failure, the damage can only be slowed down. The heart is straining to pump blood in its' weakened state, It is typical for the heart to enlarge (and weaken). Think of it of a balloon that is now way overinflated.
The only hope for hope failure patients is to receive a heart transplant.
|by Anonymous||reply 48||07/08/2013|
Viral cardiomyopathy is a disorder where a virus attacks the muscles of the heart, causing the heart to beat slower, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website. In some cases, the heart can stop, it said.
“Viral cardiomyopathy can be caused by 30-plus different viruses, but it’s almost impossible to pinpoint which virus it is,” said Dr. Ramin Oskoui, a cardiologist and internal medicine specialist in Washington. ”Hospitals use viral cardiomyopathy as a ‘catch all’ diagnosis.”
|by Anonymous||reply 49||07/08/2013|
How sad. What R27 said.
|by Anonymous||reply 50||07/08/2013|
I just said the other day after watching that PBS 4th of July broadcast, it is interesting how country music - which used to dominate those specials especially in the first Bush era - has really vanished from the mainstream.
|by Anonymous||reply 51||07/08/2013|
Years of drug abuse and non stop drinking have cause his cardiomyopathy. Viral, my ass.
Mine was caught in time, I stopped in time, and if I hadn't, I'd have been dead 10 years ago. My ejection fraction when they brought me in was 10.
|by Anonymous||reply 52||07/08/2013|
Could be from untreated dental infections.
Or this could be a fisting accident and they are covering it up.
|by Anonymous||reply 53||07/08/2013|
Poor Randy, he's had a tough year so far.
|by Anonymous||reply 54||07/08/2013|
Randy was married to a woman, right? Doesn't sound gay to me.
|by Anonymous||reply 55||07/08/2013|

This year they featured Motown The Musical. That's so patriotic and really fits the occasion.

A pacemaker is being used here as a generic term. What he might get is a CRT-D. a Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy with Defibrillator. A CRT device has three leads inserted in the heart. One in the Right Atrium, One in the Right Ventricle and a third in one of the veins on the outside of the left ventricle. It also has a built in defibrillator as Patients with his condition are susceptible to sudden death syndrome. Drug therapy will also be used either in place of the CRT or in addition. It will be interesting to hear what his doctors recommend.
|by Anonymous||reply 57||07/08/2013|
poor guy just has not been able to get his shit together.
|by Anonymous||reply 58||07/08/2013|
His debut cd is a masterwork. 1982, On the Other Hand, Reasons I Cheat, Send My Body, etc
|by Anonymous||reply 59||07/08/2013|
Oh shut up, r55.
|by Anonymous||reply 60||07/09/2013|
R55 the woman Randy married was 1) 20 years older 2) his manager
|by Anonymous||reply 61||07/09/2013|
I hope they induct Randy Travis into the Country Music Hall of Fame while he's still alive, and not wait until after he dies, like they did with Tammy Wynette or Conway Twitty.
|by Anonymous||reply 62||07/09/2013|
I eat old people's excrement!
|by Anonymous||reply 63||07/09/2013|
Yes about the complex etiologic features of cardiomyopathy, but in Travis' case the underlying cause appears rather evident.
|by Anonymous||reply 64||07/09/2013|
My sister lived for over 15 years with viral cardiomyopathy. She was not a big drinker, was in her 50's when she was diagnosed, but was a very large woman whose weight put extra strain onher heart. She died 5 years ago at age 68. she had a pacemaker that made all the difference. She led a full life for most of those 15 years.
|by Anonymous||reply 65||07/09/2013|
She had viral cardiomyopathy for over 15 years, R65, or did she live with the effects of an acute case?
And did she have her own health insurance for all the help she got?
|by Anonymous||reply 66||07/10/2013|
He looks tremendous!

Randy Travis' publicist says the singer has suffered a stroke in a Texas hospital, in surgery - @AP
|by Anonymous||reply 69||07/10/2013|
Country music star Randy Travis, who has been hospitalized with a heart condition, had a stroke Wednesday, according to Baylor Hospital.
His publicist, Kirt Webster, also confirmed that Travis had had a stroke.
The hospital said Travis is in critical condition and is undergoing surgery to relieve pressure in his brain.
|by Anonymous||reply 70||07/10/2013|
i wonder if it's meth related. Often causes strokes.
|by Anonymous||reply 71||07/10/2013|
|by Anonymous||reply 72||07/10/2013|
It's sad what the closet does to a gay man. Very sad.

"His voice is too deep."
|by Anonymous||reply 75||07/13/2013|
Country music star Randy Travis is out of the hospital three weeks after he was admitted with congestive heart failure and later suffered a stroke.
A statement Wednesday says Travis has been discharged from The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano near Dallas, where he'd been admitted July 7.
The statement from publicist Kirt Webster goes on to say Travis has been moved to a physical therapy center for further treatment for a stroke he suffered July 10.
The 54-year-old singer developed the heart failure due to a viral illness. The stroke prompted surgeons to operate to relieve pressure on his brain.

He's back in the hospital with double pneumonia and the Enquirer is writing a speculative piece about who will inherit his estate -- his ex or his new fiancee.
AS country music legend RANDY TRAVIS clings to life, a vicious battle is raging over his $15 million fortune! The 54-year-old singer is at death’s door after contracting double pneumonia, sources say. Now his ex-wife, LIB HATCHER TRAVIS, is fighting his still-married “fiancée,” MARY DAVIS BEOUGHER, for control of his assets.
The Grammy winner was hospitalized in critical condition with viral cardiomyopathy on July 7. As The ENQUIRER reported, Travis’ heart problems could have been exacerbated by his return to drinking after 19 years of sobriety and a deadly new addiction to speed. He suffered a stroke on July 10 and underwent surgery to relieve pressure on his brain. But he seemed to be rallying, sources say, until he inhaled food into his lungs and contracted double pneumonia. That landed him in critical condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.
|by Anonymous||reply 77||09/05/2013|
When were his scenes in "The Bridge" filmed?
|by Anonymous||reply 78||09/05/2013|
Untreated strep. Duh.
|by Anonymous||reply 79||09/05/2013|
'Inhaled food into his lungs?' Was he choking on food? Seriously, how does this happen? Any medical people know the answer? I've choked on food pleny of times and never contracted pneumonia.
|by Anonymous||reply 80||09/05/2013|
You will. It's very easy to inhale food and drink.
|by Anonymous||reply 81||09/05/2013|
Haven't you ever heard of food or drink 'going down the wrong pipe', R80? You must be young. I aspirated some chewed up raw carrot in my lungs years ago. Just took a wrong breath or something, or talking while chewing. It didn't give me pneumonia either, but I coughed it out most of the day. When you're older, and already sick, it can't be good. Down the hall from our apt., a druggie was taken by ambulance because she aspirated vomit.
|by Anonymous||reply 82||09/05/2013|
Yes, R80. I have heard of food going down the wrong pipe and, as I stated in my post, I've choked on food before. And I'm 51 so not that young but the wording is what threw me. Why not just say he choked on food instead of 'inhaled?' Did the papers report that Janis Joplin INHALED a ham sandwich?
When I think of inhaling something, its either through the nose (like coke) or eating fast.
Sorry to upset you R82, but I do thank you for the explanation.
|by Anonymous||reply 83||09/05/2013|
There is no way he is gay. His voice is too deep.
Funny troll post.
|by Anonymous||reply 84||09/05/2013|
I remember tricking with this guy because his voice was so deep, I loved fucking him. He would do these deeeeep guttural moans. Yeah, a deep voice means your not gay...riiiiiight...
|by Anonymous||reply 85||09/05/2013|
R80 it usually means that they've aspirated vomit. It's a relatively easy thing to have happen. All it takes is inhaling while throwing up.Happens often with people who are drunk, or high, and passed out laying on their back. It's also common in the elderly and infirm.
The pneumonia can come from an infection that comes from the vomitus rotting in the lungs
|by Anonymous||reply 86||09/05/2013|
Food in the lungs is very common in hospitals because you are leaning back in the bed when you eat.
|by Anonymous||reply 87||09/05/2013|
Note to DLers. When you are in the hospital, no matter how convenient and easy it is, when they bring the tray sit up straight to eat!
|by Anonymous||reply 88||09/05/2013|
They've probably killed millions by letting them lie back while they eat.
|by Anonymous||reply 89||09/05/2013|
Like he still has a gag reflex.
