Old man catches and kills 200-year-old fish

So sad, the fish could have lived for hundreds more years. It's just cruel to take the life of something that has lived for soooooooooo long. It witnessed the Titanic, the founding of the US, and so much more!

In 1813, President James Madison occupied the White House, Americans occupied Fort George in Canada (a result of the War of 1812) and a rockfish was born somewhere in the North Pacific.

Two hundred years later, that same rockfish was caught off the coast of Alaska by Seattle resident Henry Liebman — possibly setting a record for the oldest rockfish ever landed.

Rockfish are very long lived and the problem is that nobody really tries to catch them - they catch your line when you're fishing for halibut or salmon. You can't just release them because they come up from such depths that their air bladders have burst and they're dead or dying by then time you know what you have.

I felt horrible when I caught a 40 year old rockfish - at the time, older than I was.

why is he smiling? I think it's sad. It would have been cool to see how long the fish could live on its own without an annoying human killing it first.

How could it have witnessed anything at the bottom of the ocean?

[quote]How could it have witnessed anything at the bottom of the ocean?

It lived through humanity turning its oceans into a stinking, toxic pile of spew and plastic bags, which is pretty much the same thing.

Was it at Stonewall?

by Anonymousreply 607/03/2013

The US was founded in 1813?

A headline from the future, about Brahim Zaibat and Madonna.

Didn't Homer do something similar in "The Simpsons?"

by Anonymousreply 907/03/2013

It turns out the fish was more like 64 years old.

Revolting that he's smiling but it's not as if he was trying to kill a 200 year old fish.

by Anonymousreply 1107/10/2013

I read that since they are deep-sea creatures the fish was dead from the change in pressure before it got to the surface.

by Anonymousreply 1207/10/2013

But didn't the Titanic wind up at the bottom of the ocean?

It must not have taken too much effort for Frederic Prinz von Anhalt to catch one legged wife, Zsa Zsa? She's actually finally gone?

Thank you R7, I couldn't believe that wasn't the first comment to this thread.

Think of all that rockfish had yet to achieve!

by Anonymousreply 1607/10/2013

Hell, Rockfish was turning his life around. He started back to school. He was spending time with his son, and getting ready to marry his daughter's Mother.

I hope this "fisherman" gets a hook stuck through his fat lip and ends up in a drum of bubbling grease.

by Anonymousreply 2007/11/2013

I think I read this in high school.
