Countries That Are Going Backwards, Rather Than Fowards
Russia, Canada, France, Australia
I can't believe that America is progressing, and so many other countries that were so socially advanced are heading backwards -- or are just not progressing at all. The Right in France is akin to Nazism.
What's happening in Russia is unbelievable. They're one step away from giving gays the death penalty.
We're living in a very bizarre era, but perhaps this will be the new normal for the future.

Canada? Because we currently have a conservative party in power? Please keep in mind OP that Canada, despite a conservative majority government , has had same sex marriage for 10 years now, and there is not talk of trying to change that.
One day my friend America will have a republican President again. Won't that be interesting ....

You're an idiot, OP. The US is catching up to these countries and in many ways is still far behind them on many social issues, such as free healthcare and abortion rights. The repeal of DoMA just brings the US in line with the rest of Western Europe and Australasia, and those countries didn't need Court intervention to get those rights, either.

We're spying on all of own citizens.
Millions are unemployed.
Those who are employed are at the mercy of heartless corporations.
No national health insurance.
Our populace is getting stupider by the day.
Anybody care to add to the list?

OP what criteria are you using for this assessment? Can't agree with you without some reference points.

In what way is the US progressing. Abortion and labor rights are at its worse. Racial discrimination too. The only thing we are progressing on is gay marriage and anti-gay laws. Important, but hardly enough to say the US is progressing.

While American scientific technological field continues to advance, I would say that our politics and culture is regressing. Other posters here have addressed the political regress, so I'll say that culturally, we've been dumbed down. Our schools just aren't churning out great thinkers. Reality TV shows just dominate the ratings charts. Once-great networks like Discovery, History Channel and even National Geographic is turning to redneck culture for its realities shows. Fox News is the #1 cable "news" network.

r7 While TV has been dumbed down, I don't think that has implications on society in general the way people make it to be.

r8 you must be kidding right? What people watch on TV and in the theater most certainly reflects the culture.

Turkey is going backwards. Iran has gone all the way backwards to the 12th century after the Shah was deposed in a revolution WE supported. The North Carolina situation with the unemployed means that WE are going backwards towards the 1900's. The abortion issue going on in TX means we are going backwards.

[R8], you should think that through again.

r10 it's actually worse in Iowa.
TX's anti-abortion law is similar to VA, but Iowa gives the governor the power to decide who gets an abortion on a case-by-case basis if it is funded by medicaid. Yep. He gets to decide.
It's just crazy out there where Republicans dominate the state legislatures.

I'd imagine OP is talking about gay rights and how this week it seems like US has become more tolerant or accepting while in Russia they're re-enacting the pogroms, but replacing the Jews with the gays.

The US now sides with progressive causes/issues. There are more Democrats than Republicans in the country, and the Right is now demonized and mocked. That is progress. We've backed these creatures into a corner. They're in certain states. They haven't be able to spread like a virus and attain power over every state. They keep turning more and more people off. Minorities are now almost solidly Democratic.

R16 that certainly is a plausible rationale for the way a typical American datalounger thinks...
Except that France democratically opened its laws to gay couples where in the U.S. it's still being taken by force with a nasty fight ahead, Canada has gender neutral marriage and is not turning back, and with Rudd back in charge Australia will beat the US to national same-sex marriage...
The US is behind in this and so many things but ignorant Americans will never see it.

r17 I like your optimism but I'm not so sure that has been reflected in the kinds of laws that Republicans are passing in the states.
Just now Governor Kasich of OH has signed into law one of the most extreme anti-abortion legislation. This legislation was inserted into the OH budget bill at the last minute. There was no debate and no public notice. The language of the bill is vague as it redefines what "pregnancy" is.
This country is getting a bit too much. Too extreme. To cynical (as am I). Too backward. The Republicans are trying to stop social progress. They are thumbing their noses at settled laws.

r18 right. We're also very regressive on gun laws. We really haven't advanced at all in curtailing the obsession with guns.

Australia has been backward for some time, and it should have been a warning to us. They achieved in the 1970s what was only achieved in the 1990s in America: a conservative media monopoly. Who would have thought that the boring corrupt venal lame brain press would be so much more important in maintaining freedom than anyone could have guessed? Or that propaganda brainwashing techniques work much better than we ever realized.

France is not moving backwards. You can't measure the strength of a movement by the noise it makes. They still have low cost health care and retirement at age 60 and yet despite all this, a healthier business climate than the USA.

Canada is subject to the same assholes we are and they have the same problem: the left is divided and overly dependent on urban corruption.
Russia is the biggest and most dangerous problem but also the most easily solved: eliminate Putin and the whole insanity would be over virtually overnight.

r22 doesn't know what they are talking about. If the Liberal/National Coalition are elected here in September, the likelihood of the National Broadcaster being privatised, and expanded private ownership of the media is virtually guaranteed. However, the Hawke/Keating Labor goverment put limitations on how much media a particular company could own in the 1980s. It is far from perfect, but not the debacle r22 seems to think. Not yet, at least. I won't repeat what r2 said because they are pretty much on the money and made the point well enough without my help. However, Australia is indeed behind with regard to legalising gay marriage, I will give you that, OP.

OP, however despicable the far right in France are, to equate them with Nazism is stupid and ignorant. Moreover, France has gay marriage throughout the country, which is still more than the US has. Similarly, Russia, however homophobic it is, is not about to give gays the death penalty (in fact, unlike the US, Russia has a moratorium on capital punishment and has not executed anyone since the 1990s). In what way is Canada moving backwards? Are you 15?

Have to disagree R28. That 1940 thing happened because Nazis controled the French general staff and much of the political class. Charles Maurras was not some aberration.

Really, r30? So you think something equivalent to 1930s/1940s Europe is about to erupt in France? Do you even comprehend what the Nazis were?
Oh, and France recently passed gay marriage and same-sex couples are marrying.

Amurricans, you will continue to breathe our maple scented dust until gay marriage and abortion are legal across the country and toddlers aren't accidentally shooting people every week.

No I think socialists and liberals are more in control than ever in France. However, I do believe the French right is as evil, racist, and vile and the Right in America. If not more so. And equally traitorous to La Patrie.
