Lady GaGa

She had it all...

...and then it slipped through her fingers.

What the hell happened?

by Anonymousreply 24907/02/2013

by Anonymousreply 106/23/2013

There, there...There's no there there

by Anonymousreply 206/23/2013

She didn't know how to dole herself out in small amounts.

by Anonymousreply 306/23/2013

by Anonymousreply 406/23/2013

Lupus. She got very very sick.

by Anonymousreply 506/23/2013

She was churning out generic pop songs (good, but nothing new) and acted like she was creating art that would save the world. There's a big disconnect between how she presents her music and the actual music herself.

But she's hardly over.

by Anonymousreply 606/23/2013

coke bloat

by Anonymousreply 706/23/2013

Too many meatballs.

by Anonymousreply 806/23/2013

She gave a 15 minute speech at gay pride tonight and sang the national anthem as ethel merman

by Anonymousreply 906/28/2013

Her decline is directly linked to Madonna's dismissive comment about the reductive song. Madonna should have applied her power more compassionately.

by Anonymousreply 1006/28/2013

I would wait until her next album comes out before declaring her over. She's on a downturn, but I don't think it's irreversible.

by Anonymousreply 1106/28/2013

She has an eagerly awaited new album coming out later this year, she's near the top of Forbes new most powerful celebs list (higher than Madonna), she's co-starring in a new Tarantino movie later this year, she's still one of the most followed celebs on Twitter, she's still referenced in pop culture, she's made a shitload touring, she still has people like Ke$ha and Nicki Minaj trying in vain to be the next her...

Is all that what you're referring to, OP?

by Anonymousreply 1206/28/2013

She won't allow her label to release the duet she recorded with CHER.

Why not?

by Anonymousreply 1306/29/2013
She had it all... and then it slipped through her fingers.

When, oh when, will Gaga finally be the subject of a Lifetime biopic?!

by Anonymousreply 1406/29/2013

The interwebs are buzzing about her live performance tonight, which was apparently brilliant. So yes, she's stumbled, but no, she's not over.

by Anonymousreply 1506/29/2013

Over-exposure on the one album. The next album was a bit of a flop. And yes, huge disconnect between her persona and her music. "I am my hair?" Really? Painfully shallow statement meant to be deep and revolutionary? Maybe if it had been ironic.

She seems to actually have a singing voice which is rare in pop tarts. Also, the whole performance art part of her celebrity is entertaining. She faltered, but not so badly that there's no coming back.

by Anonymousreply 1606/29/2013

She's been too available and she's bought her own hype too much.

Maintaining some scarcity and some mystery would have been better for career longevity.

by Anonymousreply 1706/29/2013

I think the album that 'sorta flopped' was her best work by far.

by Anonymousreply 1806/29/2013

She gained weight and had to ditch a concert tour when she agreed to be the surrogate for Perez Hilton's baby.

by Anonymousreply 2006/29/2013

She just wasn't HIP enough.

by Anonymousreply 2106/29/2013

SHe has a bit part in Machete 2 that Tarantino produced, let's not blow it out of proportion.

by Anonymousreply 2206/29/2013

I love you, R20.
Lady Gaga was always Queen of Pop. Still is.

Self-appointed, R19. Never forget.

by Anonymousreply 2306/29/2013

MJ was the self-appointed King of Pop... didn't she have hip surgery or something?

by Anonymousreply 2406/29/2013

R13 Probably sounds like shit like most of her music.

by Anonymousreply 2506/29/2013

She has not put out enough music yet to qualify for for Queen of anything..If she has Thriller like album or an album with 5 or 6 singles..then she can say that.

by Anonymousreply 2606/29/2013

OP it's called releasing an album, touring and then going away for a while to relax, then record a new album and start over again. Nothing new.

by Anonymousreply 2806/29/2013

I don't think she's the Queen of Pop, I'm just sayin'....

by Anonymousreply 2906/29/2013

She stole Madonna's act. Madonna sued and got it back.

You can't compete with the real thing.

by Anonymousreply 3006/29/2013

Someone on DL pointed out that her music, lyrics and production rarely come together perfectly in one song. One of those elements is usually lacking. Now I can't help but notice it.

by Anonymousreply 3106/29/2013

The difference between Gaga and her peers is that she can actually sing. And play instruments. She can have a bad year and then sing her back to the top.

by Anonymousreply 3206/29/2013

Gaga is on the same level as Beyonce. She'll define these lame times. Madonna, Whitney, Lauper in the 80s. Madonna, Whitney, Mariah, Celine in the 90s. Mariah, Britney, Christina in the 00s. Gaga, Beyonce, Rihanna in the late 00s til now.

by Anonymousreply 3306/29/2013

R31, that's a good point. I occasionally find her lyrics really jarring. Some songs (like Judas) are just a total crock of shit lyrically, but I find others to be a strong composition, and one weird line will throw it out of whack. (The "I want lots of friends who invite me to their parties" line in Hair always bothered me because I otherwise really liked that song's lyrics.) She's in need of more focus when it comes to songwriting.

r32 also has a good point. Love her, hate her, or generally indifferent, you can't deny she has a lot more musical skill than her contemporaries. There's a reason you don't see Rihanna or Britney doing acoustic sets.

by Anonymousreply 3406/29/2013

And in that link, what other pop star could even try and sing the National Anthem like her? Was it Whitney? No. But Rihanna, Miley, Beyonce, etc could never have sang it that well.

And I don't give a shit about Gaga. But the bitch can sing.

by Anonymousreply 3506/29/2013

Madonna defined the last decade of the 20th century? That's news to me. Sure, we knew she existed, but she was so unimportant to us late 90's high schoolers.

I agree with the other three you mentioned for that time period. Also, don't forget the girls of the late 90's: Alanis, Fiona, Sheryl, et cetera.

by Anonymousreply 3606/29/2013
But the bitch can sing.

Yes, but her tragedy is hers is not an attractive voice.

Even the voice of Madge, who admits hers is only a jobbing voice, is easy on the ears.

Gaga's toneless voice gongs like a dud bell.

by Anonymousreply 3706/29/2013

She couldn't keep up.

by Anonymousreply 3806/29/2013

She committed the gravest sin in pop music...

She got fat.

by Anonymousreply 3906/29/2013

R36, I was citing mainstream pop divas. I came of age in the mid-90s, and I love GOOD music, so for me it was Liz Phair, PJ Harvey, Kristen Hersh.

by Anonymousreply 4006/29/2013

She's been heavily hyped/manufactured all along. Maybe people are realizing she isn't something they've chosen, but something that's been shoved down their throats.

And GaGa is very comfortable with the idea of shoving shit down people's throats. Like when she rerecorded Madonna's song, and then announced it was to to be the new gay anthem. She's not going to leave it to the public to decide what their new gay anthem is, she will decide that, and then shove the song down your throat.

by Anonymousreply 4106/29/2013

Her song well ran dry. Yes, is can sing and play the hell outtta the piano. But who cares if you songs suck? I hope she gets some more songs like Bad Romance. Now, if she could write at least 10 more that were as good as BR, then there would be no denying her place.

by Anonymousreply 4206/29/2013

She waited too long to put out another album. Period.

by Anonymousreply 4306/29/2013

Great hooks marred by awful production and bizarre cokehead soundbites masquerading as lyrics. Voice sounds too much like Christina Aguilera.

by Anonymousreply 4406/29/2013

She overexposed herself, her ENDLESS touring on that album this year and the year before that and the year before that.

Then Madonna showed up back in town after wasting 3 years on that crummy movie. When a side by side comparison was made, people stopped talking about GaGa---and worse, before they stopped talking about her they made an industry out of mocking her.

by Anonymousreply 4506/29/2013

The image and the hype don't connect with the actual product. From the image you'd think she was making all this interesting, ground-breaking music but what she does actually bring out is fairly generic. The songs haven't become classic enough and she's known more for the image than the music. Yes, you could say that about almost every pop celeb but unless they can thrill people with their songs they won't last for long or be so highly regarded. Also, she doesn't evolve, it all just stays the same, trying to be "whacky". She had a winning formula to get to the top but doesn't seem to have much of a formula beyond that. If she's still "avant garde" in the same repetitive way in five, ten years, she won't have much to offer.

And, as r37 says, she has a good voice but it's not particulalry attractive. There's something a bit cold and mechanical about it, little emotional warmth.

by Anonymousreply 4606/29/2013

That national anthem shows why she'll be around in some form if she wants to. She has a great voice and is a good actress. Her body is connected to the lyrics and she's thinking meaning before vocals. I'm really impressed.

She is much closer to Cyndi Lauper than Madonna and I wish she'd realize it and stop the desperate Madonna theatrics.

by Anonymousreply 4706/29/2013
She's been heavily hyped/manufactured all along. Maybe people are realizing she isn't something they've chosen, but something that's been shoved down their throats.

R41, you've written the truest statement yet on Gaga. She isn't the Queen of Pop, she's the Queen of the Grossly Overhyped.

by Anonymousreply 5506/29/2013

stfu r53 and others. Everyone has "stolen" some thought from another, some idea, some expression.

But GaGa ripped off an entire song re: Express Yourself.

Look, I like both of them. Madonna more, but GaGa is respectable and she does good for the world.

But, she'll have Cyndi Lauper's career, not Madonna's.

by Anonymousreply 5606/29/2013

"Even the voice of Madge, who admits hers is only a jobbing voice, is easy on the ears."

You mean that ironically, of course.

by Anonymousreply 5706/29/2013

She has plenty going for her-

musical talent - plays the piano fairly well,

a knack for writing hits - for other artists as well (maybe that's why she appointed herself the Queen),

a good voice - without the need for enhancement, even if the trends employ them

a unique enough vocal quality to make her instantly identifiable - not at the level of a Diana, Madonna, or Cher, but close (and her vocal chops are stronger than those three).

historic significance - in the rock/pop timeline, at the end of every decade, there's always mini-revolution characterized by an outburst of dance music, sort of a way of changing things, and she single-handedly carried the one for 2008-2010 (sorry Beyoncé, your contribution was more of an R&B nature).

theatrics and controversy - her signature style, aided by a campy support staff from the school of "let's wear things not meant to be clothes", all meant to disguise her two big shortcomings...

...she's neither pretty nor a good enough dancer - in a career that relies so heavily on visuals, a pop diva needs to be at least one of these. And when the body goes and she can't even be a mannequin for the bizarre, there are consequences. You then have to rely on funny...which she isn't.

Solution? Get off the pop diva express, expand your career choices, based on your multiple talents. She can be the next Manilow, Midler, Lauper, Cher, or Diamond - if she stops obsessing with the charts and starts hanging out in other playgrounds.

Nobody cares what you think or what you like [R56] Your opinion is as meaningless as your life.

by Anonymousreply 5906/29/2013

I know r51. To me it sounds more like David Guetta's/Kelly Rowland's "When Love Takes Over", with hints of "Vogue" ('Don't be a drag, just be a queen'). I think it's the positive, inspirational cheerleading that goes on in both songs that makes people compare them.

Or someone can break them down musically and explain.

by Anonymousreply 6006/29/2013

Yeah I don't hear the comparison either. How did it blow up to a such a big story when there's no comparison between the two songs? They are out to get Lady GaGa and destroy her career with lies, it's a conspiracy, totally made up!

Gaga isn't completely over but her career has long peaked

Her Artpop will sell less than Born This Way, but it'll still be somewhat successful

She doesn't have that Madonna thing where she can reinvent herself and comeback like a completely different artist.

Who would have though that the Madonna who did the softcore porn of Erotica would give us Ray of Light just 5 years later?

The general public is kinda over her and the real reason the tour was cancelled was due to poor ticket sales in the US partly due to overexposure

She also has that coke problem that she's jokingly tweeted about

by Anonymousreply 7006/29/2013
R51 Try Madonna stealing Express Yourself from The Staples Singers' Respect Yourself.

The [italic]idea[/italic] behind the two songs may be similar, but the two songs don't sound alike, either lyrically or (especially) musically.

by Anonymousreply 7106/29/2013

When the "Born This Way" album came out, one critic rightly stated that its 80's Krautsynth sounds were somewhat alienating in the sense that she had eliminated all of the urban-dance pop which had propelled her to the top. She seems to have figured this out (too little too late) and has allegedly been working with urban artists/producers on at least part of the new "Artpop" stuff.

by Anonymousreply 7206/29/2013

I think the reason for her downfall is the fact that her music and styling became just a little too freaky for mainstream audiences to handle. Everyone listened to Gaga in her Poker face era-straight guys, chicks, gay guys...But now her main target audience seems to be only gay teenagers.

by Anonymousreply 7606/29/2013

R75 Madonna probably has the best back catalogue with MJ in pop music history.

I actually still hear a lot of Madonna's 80s and 90s hits on the radio, Gaga's hits from a few years ago, not at all

A friend of mine used to work for the A&R department at Interscope records until last year and I could tell you stories about Gaga that would make your head spin

I couldn't believe what a cunt she is, her family's Republican and she's OBSESSED with Madonna

She also has a HUGE drug problem

by Anonymousreply 7706/29/2013
Everyone listened to Gaga in her Poker face era-straight guys, chicks, gay guys...But now her main target audience seems to be only gay teenagers.

Actually, her main target audience now are Thai ladyboys

by Anonymousreply 7806/29/2013

R63 but Madonna made the most money last year of any entetainer, which is the most important

$125 million 30 years into a record breaking career and setting a new record for highest annual income for a female musical performer, with Madonna beating her own record og $110 million in 2009.

by Anonymousreply 7906/29/2013

R77--is her gay activism done from the pureness of her heart or, as others have commented on here, just for commercial purposes?

by Anonymousreply 8006/29/2013

Her first album had great catchy pop. Her second started With the song that sounded exactly like a Madonna song which was a big mistake. It's too early to tell if she is the queen of pop and too early to tell if she's over. It is actually smart of her to go away for a while.

by Anonymousreply 8106/29/2013
I could tell you stories about Gaga that would make your head spin

Do tell!

by Anonymousreply 8206/29/2013

R82 when Born This Way came out, Gaga was on one of the morning shows getting ready to perform one of the shows producers wanted her on set but off camera before her introduction

Gaga thought it was stupid to stand around off camera for 10 minutes and reportedly started screaming to her assistant that Madonna would never be forced to do this, to which her assistant snapped back that Madonna never perform on morning shows.

Let's just say that she started going off in a string of profanities in the Green Room that everyone on set heard her.

I got more, maybe I'll text him to rev up my memory.

by Anonymousreply 8306/29/2013

"The Fame" was a very good album - it was on the verge of being great but, as many posters have mentioned, the lyrics and production on some of the songs were lacking. I really liked Gaga's tongue-in-cheek approach during this phase of her career. She wasn't yet over the top and I felt that she was very clever in her criticism of pop culture.

"The Fame Monster" was alright, but started to sound a little derivative. Gaga seemed to be losing the irony that made her first album interesting.

"Born This Way" was a turd, IMO. The songs were self-important and very generic. The 20-minute long music videos and meat dresses signalled that Gaga had bought into her own hype. She seemed more focused on perpetuating her own "fame" at the cost of quality and message. The whole "little monsters" gimmick also wore thin.

She needs to do what Madonna did with "Live to Tell" - pull back, dress her music and image down, and give us a nice ballad.

by Anonymousreply 8806/29/2013

Gaga is hardly the Queen Of Pop, from a commercial and cultural influence perspective Madonna is by MILES.

Infact Madonna is more the Queen Of Pop than MJ is the king, for one Madonna has sold more albums AND concert tickets than any female performer in history.

Jackson may have the best selling album of all time with Thriller but there are male artists like Elvis and the Beatles who've sold more albums than him and male artists who sold more concert tickets.

Also Gaga doesn't have a single chart record for MUSICAL acheivememt, her one record is for most (fake) Twitter followers and Ashton Kutcher had the record before her, which shows you how "prestigious" it is.

Hell Madonna still has SINGLE albums that have outsold Gaga's "career" like True Blue and The Immaculate Collection.

I agree with r81 and r84, I'm no Lady Goober fan but the moment it all went tits up was the Born This Way album (btw the title and concept of that came from gay Motown disco artist Carl Bean's club anthem).

The Fame was a patchy mess of an album but it had much stronger singles than BTW which was a better album. Those singles were so catchy she took over the world for a brief moment.

The problem came when she started copying Madonna. She was bulletproof up till the Alejandro video which was done with Madonna's least interesting photographer collaborator Steven Klein. That was the turning point.

Before then she actually had her own schtick which was outside of Madonna. Madge never wore weirdo shit like that, so Gags was better off sticking to the kooky Grace Jones/Roisin Murphy shit. She forgot her USP.

by Anonymousreply 9506/29/2013
"I am my hair?" Really? Painfully shallow statement meant to be deep and revolutionary?

You should've looked deeper into the context of the lyric. The song is about not being afraid to be who you are. It's sort of a battle cry for misfits and outsiders. And when she dedicated a live performance of it to that gay kid who was a big fan of hers who committed suicide, it just made the song that much more poignant.

R94 how did MDNA bomb? It was the 12th biggest selling album of the year worldwide and it sold 1.8 million copies

It is true that MDNA did have the biggest second week drop of an album that debuted at #1 in the 21 year history of Soundscan

But your precious Gaga had that record before Madonna so you just contradicted yourself!

And if MDNA was such a flop than why did Madonna win 2 Billboard awards for Top Selling Dance album and Top Selling Dance Artist of the year?

by Anonymousreply 10206/29/2013

R94 you're deranged and if it wasn't for Madonna there would be no Gaga.

And if no one wants to buy her shit anymore than how come Madonna made more money and sold more tickets on her last tour than Gaga did?

You can do basic math right?

by Anonymousreply 10306/29/2013

Lady Gaga is the Queen of 21 year old gays. Whoops, now those 21 year olds are 23 year olds, and they've moved on to their next coke bender induced musical tastes.

When's the last time you heard Lady Gaga on the radio or at a club? The way pop culture moves so lightening fast today, if Gaga doesn't produce the next big thing within a month or two, she'll be completely forgotten.

It's telling that every time Lady Gaga is mentioned, Madonna is mentioned in the next sentence.

In 30 years, if Lady Gaga has surpassed all of Madonna's accomplishments, we shall see if she is the "Queen of Pop."

Don't forget that a little over 10 years ago, Christina Aguilara was the undisputed queen of pop, and her reign would never, never be toppled.

Sorry GaGa fans, your queen has abandoned you.

Madonna and her fans really have nothing to worry about, she's one of the most famous and successful living women. I'm not saying that as a Madonna fan, I'm just being practical.

Well Gaga's ridiculous bullying Little Monsters went apeshit on Twitter calling Jones a dykey looking N word and most didn't even know who she was

That Gaga is such a role model (sarcasm)

R111 the CD price of $11 was ADDED to the price of the concert ticket!

So you still paid $11 for the CD, believe me Madonna isn't giving anything away for free

Unlike Gaga who was selling her Born This Way CD for 99 cents on Amazon!

by Anonymousreply 11606/29/2013

"Well Gaga's ridiculous bullying Little Monsters went apeshit on Twitter calling Jones a dykey looking N word and most didn't even know who she was"

...and yet these same benighted little shits are the ones screaming the loudest about "tolerance". Gaga should take a long look at what her "young frankensteins" are spewing in her name.

by Anonymousreply 12106/29/2013

Lady Gaga is the Queen of Slop! Suck it Madonna fangurls!

by Anonymousreply 12206/29/2013

No 113, you're wrong, Madonna and Lady Gaga are mutually exclusive.

Lady Gaga is hardly the Meryl Streep of music. That's probably the most laughable thing I've read on DL in a long while. Meryl has been making films since the 70s, Madonna has been around since the 80s, and Lady Gaga has been around for about 5 or 6 years. Lady Gaga has yet still to prove her worth and longevity. It is longevity that makes someone a legend, not being a pop culture flash in the pan, which she is until she has been consistently successful for as long as Meryl or Madonna.

Lady Gaga fans are really...just beyond comprehension in their infantile fantasies.

by Anonymousreply 12306/29/2013

R115 MDNA is not her farewell tour fot the 8000th time!

Madonna still has 2 more tours and albums on her Live Nation contract which expires in 2017

MDNS waa never promoted as a farewell tour and Madonna only sung about 6 od her classic hits, instead focusing heavily on her new material

When Madonna does do a proper farewell tour and and does her greatest hits the box office grosses will be ridiculous.

GaGa still can't compete

by Anonymousreply 12406/29/2013

R123 sometimes I think they're trolling, but they actually believe the ridiculous things they say! I also heard that Cher unfollowed Gaga on Twitter, after. GAGA refused to release the duet that they worked on almost 2 years ago

Once a cunt, always a cunt

by Anonymousreply 12506/29/2013

R100 she was actually in 19933 during the World Series in Philadelphia Madonna was in Philly for her Girlie Show tour

by Anonymousreply 12606/29/2013

R126 And she didn't do it because she knows damn well she doesn't have the voice for it.

by Anonymousreply 12706/29/2013

GaGa's HBO concert special showed just how much she tries to be like Madonna but comes up short.

by Anonymousreply 12806/29/2013

Calling GAGA the Queen of Pop shows the stupidity of her fanbase, aside from Madonna being the obvious choice anf the one who the media refers to as the QOP the most there's at least 20 female icons who deserve it before that trash

Whitney, Mariah and Janet for longevity and actual MUSIC CHART records not fake Twitter followers

Beyonce and Britney for 14 years of conssistant success

Hell even Katy PERRY Rihanna and Adele are more worthy candidates than GaGa and her fake Twitter followers

They actually have musical chart records, something that Gaga lacks

by Anonymousreply 12906/29/2013

Some advice for Ms. GaGa:

Don't cry out loud, just keep it inside, learn how to hide your feelings. Fly high and proud, and if you should fall, remember you almost had it all!

by Anonymousreply 13006/29/2013

I agree with the posters who mentioned the following because I think they are all relevant:

The overhype of that album with 'Born This Way' and the overhype of the overly long single too, for that matter.

The weird appearance, she was trying too hard to be shocking. I think the skull and cheek implants (fake?, probably) turned people off.

Madonna calling her music reductive. It really did coincide with Gaga's decline.

She got fat.

She got sick.

I think she could have a comeback, in fact I think she could comeback just by using her regular name (Stefani something) because I think she plays beautifully and has a good, not great, voice.

by Anonymousreply 13206/29/2013

R51, R60, R101, I totally agree.

There is no actual similarity musically between BTW and EY. The thing people are catching on to is the similar theme of the lyrics and their self-affirming cheerleading.

The key, the tempo, the chord structure, the music - not at all alike. From a music production standpoint the hype over these two songs being similar seems to be self-perpetuated by Madonna fans.

If you look on YouTube there are some really lame attempts at 'mashing up' these two songs, and it serves to prove just how dissimilar the productions really are.

I like both divas equally, btw, so I don't have a horse in this race.

by Anonymousreply 13306/29/2013
Madonna calling her music reductive. It really did coincide with Gaga's decline.

To be fair, Madonna's comment didn't help her album sales either - her last album was the worst selling album of her entire career and all of the singles flopped.

by Anonymousreply 13406/29/2013

So the word e.lderg/ay is totally banned here? Wow, I wondered why my post kept getting rejected.. I thought it was cause I was posting something I shouldn't - gossip in the gay closet thread.
When's the last time you heard Lady Gaga on the radio or at a club?

Every time I turn on the radio or go to a club.

by Anonymousreply 13706/29/2013

My friend who worked at Interscope records until last summer was a guest at Madonna and Demi Moore's joint Oscar party in 2011

He never met Madonna before the party but goes way back with her manager Guy Oseary, anyway M was holding court at her table with Oseary, her business manager (who my friend told me was Jonah Hill's father) her best friend Ingrid Caseras, Anderson Cooper, Leonardo DiCaprio and James Franco! Who Madonna had just got off the dance floor with, Demi was busy walking around and schmoozing.

Oseary spots my friend calls him over to the table and introduces him to Madonna and said that he works in A&R now at Interscope records and his currently working on the campaign for Lady GaGa and her Born This Way album

Madonna shook his hand and said in a bitchy british Joan Collins voice "oh you're working with the bitch who thinks she's me"? My friend Jason, shocked replied back Lady Gaga and then Madonna shot "no I refer to her as the bitch who thinks she's me and that's how everybody shall refer to her as in my presence"

Jason didn't no if Madonna was joking or not then Madonna cracked a smile and she and everyone at her table started laughing

They then had a nice conversation about the changing music business, after my friend left the table area he heard DiCaprio whisper to Madonna about Gaga "she's a bit of a joke, isn't she"? In which Madonna shot back "a bit"? And they both started laughing

by Anonymousreply 13806/29/2013

So r133, the many other artists, critics, musicians and fans at the time were just imagining it were they? There's more to being a rip off than just copying a few notes, BTW steals melody, atmosphere, style and has similar vocals.

It also sounds like a few other songs, some pointed out the opening verse was TLC's Waterfalls, When Loves Take Over as well.. and Madonna's Vogue - even the opening line "my mama told me when I was young we're all born superstars", sounds like the mama she means was Madonna. Above all the obvious similarity is Express Yourself.

Gaga was amazing last night. She has the best vocals in the pop industry. It's great to see someone with talent for once. I can't stand mimers. She wouldn't have lip-synced like Beyonce at Obama's inauguration.

[all posts by tedious troll removed.]

by Anonymousreply 14306/29/2013

That's all bullshit reaching, R139. If that's the case, Madonna's "Deeper and Deeper" ripped of Janet's "Control" because:

"I did what my father said and let my mother mold me" -- CONTROL

"That's what my mama told me...I let my father mold me..." -- DEEPER AND DEEPER

Also, there is no way in hell EY and BTW have the same "atmosphere". One is filled with horns, keyboards and an organ, and the other is synthesized Europop.

And take a look at R101, because Madonna is clearly not innocent in the song rip-off category.

by Anonymousreply 14406/29/2013

r138 if DiCaprio really did say that then he's a super queen.

R141 if anything I like Madonna more after hearing that story

She was telling the absolute truth

Madonna forever the Head Bitch In Charge

by Anonymousreply 14606/29/2013
GaGa still can't compete

She's young, and wipes the floor with Madonna in terms of power according to Forbes, so yes, she can compete. She's relevant to the music industry. Madonna is relevant when it comes to touring, and her touring is based on nostalgia. No one is buying her new music.

I would be interested in Madonna if she grew the fuck up, and put brains behind her music again. I know she hardly wrote any of it (despite taking credit), but at least the entire product was interesting. I loved the "Erotica" era. I know that if she did the "Sex" book today, that wouldn't be growing up, but at least she had a purpose behind that era. Madonna is just repeating herself non-stop, and she's namedropping Lady Gaga to get attention, oh, and taking out her tits and vage on stage. I mean, come on. It's not even shocking now. Even these costume get-ups and hairstyles she's sporting are old. They're what she did back in the 90s.

The thing I enjoy about Lady Gaga is that she's hungry when it comes to her work and getting to the top. That's what Madonna once was. In an industry full of Rhiannas, it's great to see a girl who really has ambition, and a feminist slant when it comes to her behavior. She's also timely in terms of politics. Madonna trying to get with the gays again, and then, omg, the worst: putting photos of kids that committed suicide in her show, is just pathetic. It's so hallow. It's like when she did her "W.E." movie, and used all the crew from films like "The King's Speech" and expected to win an Oscar. She doesn't understand that you can't just take someone's work and get the same result from it. There has to be some organic quality.

by Anonymousreply 14706/29/2013

She never had much talent to begin with... you can only go so far when you're that unoriginal.

I never understood how Madonna didn't get sued for stealing that Staple Sings song "Respect Yourself" and giving no credit. Madonna fell out with Stephen Bray over that song, saying that she came in for 5 minutes, change a word to get credit for it.

by Anonymousreply 15106/29/2013

R147 how does Gaga wipe the floor with Madonna according to Forbes? Forbes themselves stated that Madonna made more money than her last year and Billboard and the LA Times both called her the world's most powerful musician earlier this year.

by Anonymousreply 15206/29/2013
She stole Madonna's act. Madonna sued and got it back.

This never happened.

Gaga got paid every night Madonna used her song for "Express Yourself." What's even more hilarious, is that Madonna asked her to duet on one of her tour dates. Gaga told her to go fuck yourself. Madonna spent ten minutes on stage bashing her over it. It's on Youtube.

No pop artist has been sued more times than Madonna for stealing. If you're a Madonna fan, I wouldn't bring up lawsuits. Madonna has had to pay through the nose. Her song "Frozen" is banned from being played or sold in countries because it was stolen.

Why not spend some of that energy living your own life? Go to college, get good grades, and try to do something meaningful with your life. You don't need Lady Gaga to give your life some meaning or validation. That power is in your own hands. I wish you well.

Funny how the little trolls want to call MNDA a flop. First weeks sales were 359,000. Manuel Wests Yeezus first week sales were 327,000 and everyone is going crazy saying he's the king of rap, and how well it is selling. Again, lets see what FartPlop does.

by Anonymousreply 17006/29/2013

R164 Madonna's debut album wasn't released until she was 25

Gags was released when she was 22

In the first 5 years of both their careers Madonna shits all over Gaga during her first 5 years

Madonna had more #1 songs and albums, more top 10 hits, more albums sold and even a big hit movie with Desperately Seeking Susan

Madonna also had every teenage girl on the world dressing like her, her fashion influence was so huge that department stores would hold "Madonna Look a Like" contests

Madonna even had her own accessory line at Macy's Her 1986 True Blue album was not only the world's top selling album of 1986 but the top selling album of the entire 80s decade by a female artist

After reading, R142, I realize that you must be trolling. Gaga's belting range is terrible, she just shouts, she doesn't sing any notes. She sounds like she's being mugged and shouting for help. Her head voice is strained and has too much weight. She also strains because she tries to sing beyond her range. She has shoddy technique which contributes to the problems with her voice that I listed, she also drinks and smokes. She also doesn't do anything particularly difficult or challenging as a singer. Due to her shoddy technique she will most definitely be doing a lot of lip-syncing in the next 5 years or so, if she's still around. And from the looks of this video, she has already started.

If you think she has a better voice than Pink or Beyonce or even Adele ( although the latter two do dabble in other genres, they are considered Pop singers) you're mentally ill and have no idea what you're talking about. It's one thing to prefer one voice over another, but it's a whole other thing to claim Gaga has the best Pop voice. I also think it's idiotic to compare a newbie to someone with Madonna's resume. by Anonymousreply 19806/29/2013

This is all too nutty for me, but r131 said all there is to say. The objective truth.

r133 is either being disingenuous or is NOT a Music Producer. If you have even one musical ear or an ear worm the similarities between the fucking MELODY and bass lines of BTW and EY are instantly recognized. I was shocked after the hype preceding the release of Born This Way, when I first heard the song. Bitch stole Madonna's dong, I mean song. I am sure she didn't realize. It is not like this has not happened before. But the hype! Sort of like the long build up to the unveiling of the "new" Coke. Tasted just like Pepsi. OOPS.

Gaga does play beautifully and can sing. Not as well as Adele or Pink or Kelly or many others. but yes of course better than Madonna.

Time to compose and sing some ballads Gaga. Lay off the meat dress and drugs too.

R200 Yes, it's true that in the mid-late 90's her voice improved, but obviously she didn't keep up with her voice lessons because after 2000, her voice went right back to shit again. All of her albums now rely heavily on Autotune, the last one relying on it more than any of the others. She has the same whiney voice again that she had when she first came out.

by Anonymousreply 20206/29/2013

R201 because every album that's ever been. Released in music history must have sold more than the 2 million that MDNA did?

Wouldn't that be the criteria for MDNA being the biggest flop album in music history?

Yet MDNA sold more than McCartney, Springsteen, Streisand, Dylan and Van Halen's albums ladt year

As well as the latest albums from Nicki Minaj, JLO, Christina Auguilra, Britney, Mariah and Janet. Hell it sold more than Michael Jackson's 2 posthumous albums

You make no damn sense!

I lost interest in her when she started aggressively promoting fur and acting like the victim for people calling her out on it.

R210 yet Madonna sold more tickets, at steep prices, to that tour than any other tour last year including Gaga's

Despite the fact that Gaga did 10 more dates than Madonna

Once again you contradict yourself and make more sense

And why would Madonna be jelous of the younger girls coming yp?

She opened the damn door for them!

And everyone from Miley to Rihanna to Perry to Beyonce to Swift to Pink to Britney and Christina has listed Madonna as an influence and icon of theirs

Even Carly Rae Jepsen and Kesha too

R214 true, but for a female pop star it's unheard of

Cher has had periods of musical success but also periods when she was flopping or due to her illness that makes her tired all the time, semi retired.

There are a ton of iconic and talented female artists who've been around just as long, if not longer than Madonna and they're not having anything near Madonna's success

Streisand could really rake in the dough if she toured more often but she still suffers from bouts of stage fright

Decades before Gaga and her "little monsters", Madonna had her "wannabes"

...and they were legion.

Madonna's first concert tour "The Virgin Tour" supporting 2 hit albums. It was just her and her 2 backup singers/dancers.

Her huge production tours would come later.

by Anonymousreply 22506/29/2013

Didn't that Rob guy who wrote Gags only good song sue her for plagarism? And stealing credits?

Gags called her former assistant a racist term, a hoodrat and abused her verbally and physically and now she's suing Gags.

And Gags former stylist went on TV and blabbed that "Madonna should be bitter about Gaga, because we purposely styled her in Madonna's old images".

Gags team fired her not long after from spilling the trur tea

These dueling pop star thread absolutely fascinate me.

Why do you guys care so much? It's like you're taking it personal. Some people like Madonna, some Gaga, some neither, some both.

You queens all need to take a deep breath and relax.

Madonna wishes she could create a song as good as Gaga's HEAVY METAL LOVER.

by Anonymousreply 23306/29/2013

It's June 29, and Lady Gaga is still shiteous.

This has been your Shiteous Musician Update. And now, back to "Caftans and Skidmarks."

I'm Lady GaGa's most fabulous imaginary BFF! We have imaginary dinner and drinks together, she calls at midnight to see how I am, and sometimes we sing to each other and brush each other's hair.

Lady GaGa is my best friend and she is my best friend forever. I must be more special than the rest of you, being loved by Lady GaGa and living in this fabulous white room full of padded walls.

Every night I get my injection and pills from the men in the white coats and later, Lady GaGa comes and visits me and rocks me gently to sleep. I love my Lady GaGa. My Lady GaGa loves me. Good night now!

Be careful what you wish for, R236.

Mentioning Gaga and Madonna in the same category seems laughable to me. Outside of Pokerface most people can't sing her songs. However, walk up to almost any person in the street of any age and ask them to give some Madge and you will at the very least get them to say "Like A Virgin".

Madonna may have stolen, but she owes her success to an uncanny ability to assimilate the best of that which came before; knowing when to go away and reinvent herself; and making sure she worked with the best. She's an artist only in the sense that Warhol was. Mostly she is a shrewd business woman.

Gaga cannot say the same, and is all marketing without the classic tunes to back it up. This is why she's faltering and will fall off a cliff unless she dares to be unfashionable enough to write some heartfelt ballads.

There just is no argument. I'm not a massive fan of Madge and her latest stuff is shite, but you just can't help but enjoy a lot of her hits. And her place in history is assured no matter how much she keeps on fucking up her legacy by embarrassing herself by not acting her age.

I'm starting to think the Gagabot is more unhinged than Janbot, which is saying something.

by Anonymousreply 23707/01/2013

ayb, I'm not a GagaBot at all. But I definitely enjoy her music more than Madonna's. Obviously, Madonna has tons more to choose from, but you get what I mean. And of course Madonna is the bigger star. She's the biggest female star of all time. Hands down. Gaga is just one of long line of second in command who may or may not even reach Britney's fame.

But some of us out there just enjoy Gaga's music and persona more than Madonna's. I've said upthread, I'm much more impressed with a pop star who can actually produce music than one who can't. Gaga seems helluva a lot of more fun as well.

That's right R238! Those two are in a race to find out who can jump off the Golden Gate bridge first.

Which would only!

Tee-Hee! BE SWEET!

"Moron. Lady Gaga is NOT faltering. SHE*S THE SECOND MOST POWERFUL CELERITY IN THE WORLD. Fucking idiot."

R240, is delusional if he believes that. Lady GaGa is just another tool to push agendas for very powerful men.

by Anonymousreply 24107/01/2013

Can I suggest a name change for Gagabot? All the other bots have the name of the pop singer shortened, Mad-bot, Jan-bot, so why not Gagbot? You missed the opportunity to slam Gaga with her bot's name. Gagbot please, so much better.

The fact GaGa could sing the anthem like that from a crappy mike at a pride gathering says it all. She's a little bit nuts, but she's been pro gay all the way and she has real talent.

by Anonymousreply 24807/01/2013

Face it, Gaga is over and she wasn't much to begin with.
