“Ex-Gay” Group Exodus Realizes It’s Wrong, Apologizes, Shuts Down

After attempting to brainwash gay people into renouncing their sexual orientation for 37 years, the “ex-gay ministry” Exodus International has seen the light and is turning it off.

GLAAD‘s Ross Murray, the group’s director of news and faith initiatives, alerted Queerty to the decision by Exodus president Alan Chambers. A statement posted on the Exodus website revealed that its board of directors had begun to find “‘ex-gay’ work more and more difficult, given their anti-gay words and actions.” Today Chambers posted an apology on the site “for the harm that he had caused LGBT people and their families in his quest to make them match an anti-gay view of God.”

Chambers adds: I am sorry for the pain and hurt that many of you have experienced. I am sorry some of you spent years working through the shame and guilt when your attractions didn’t change. I am sorry we promoted sexual orientation change efforts and reparative theories about sexual orientation that stigmatized parents.

I am sorry I didn’t stand up to people publicly ‘on my side’ who called you names like sodomite—or worse. I am sorry that I, knowing some of you so well, failed to share publicly that the gay and lesbian people I know were every bit as capable of being amazing parents as the straight people that I know. I am sorry that when I celebrated a person coming to Christ and surrendering their sexuality to Him, I callously celebrated the end of relationships that broke your heart. I am sorry I have communicated that you and your families are less than me and mine.

A US faith-based organisation notorious for its gay conversion therapy crusade has apologised to the LGBT community for the “pain and hurt” it has caused.

Exodus International calls itself “the oldest and largest Christian ministry dealing with faith and homosexuality” – but it is now shutting down after 37 years.

In a statement Alan Chambers, president of Exodus said: “It is strange to be someone who has both been hurt by the church’s treatment of the LGBT community, and also to be someone who must apologise for being part of the very system of ignorance that perpetuated that hurt.

“Today it is as if I’ve just woken up to a greater sense of how painful it is to be a sinner in the hands of an angry church.

“Please know that I am deeply sorry. I am sorry for the pain and hurt many of you have experienced. I am sorry that some of you spent years working through the shame and guilt you felt when your attractions didn’t change.”

Mr Chambers added. “I am profoundly sorry that many have walked away from their faith and that some have chosen to end their lives. For the rest of my life I will proclaim nothing but the whole truth of the Gospel, one of grace, mercy and open invitation to all to enter into an inseverable relationship with almighty God.”

The 41-year-old admitted that he was still attracted to men and acknowledged his organisation had caused others to suffer because of their own same-sex attractions.

Mr Chambers also said he was deeply sorry that the stigmatisation of LGBT people sometimes led to suicide.

However, he refused to apologise for his “deeply held biblical beliefs” about sexuality and marriage.

Mr Chambers gained international attention in 2011 after being interviewed by Lisa Ling of the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) as part of a special programme on so-called “pray away the gay” therapies. At the time, he said the therapy allowed LGBT individuals to live a life in accordance with their Christian faith.

But last June he said homosexuality cannot be “cured” and that people can be damaged by therapy designed to turn them heterosexual.

He now plans to read his lengthy apology in a new OWN programme, which airs on Thursday evening.

On Wednesday, it was reported that several UK MPs had signed an Early Day Motion against gay conversion therapy to ensure that “NHS medical professionals cannot inflict this cruel treatment on their patients”.

The discredited medical practice has been described as “harmful” by the UK Government – although some therapists still seek to provide the treatment – through referrals by GPs.

I don't think "it's all good." I mean, it's a decent apology, but it doesn't really do anything to rectify the psychological torture they put people (and children, I'm assuming) through.

A far better idea would be to set up a victim compensation fund.

Don't be fooled by it........

1. They still consider homosexuality a sin.

2. Exodus Global still exists and promotes a cure for homosexuality, having offices still running in Ajax, ON Canada among other places.

Hate is just becoming more tricky. Exodus Global is still in operation.

Oprah will be covering up for them tomorrow on OWN, just like she covers for Scientology.

The GOP has to dump its anti-gay fronts because all the Republucan queers want to get married and get benefits like everyone else. So they'll be closing down more of these types of organizations.

This does not in any way detract from Oprah's insufferable cuntiness.

As for Ex-Exodus? Good. No, it's not perfect. Yes they are still fucked up fundies who live in fear and bear watching. Still, the unraveling and ultimate extinction of this organization is another nail in the coffin of anti-gay bigotry.

It seemed a heartfelt apology, particularly in relation to the harm they caused many, and the new organisation they're establishing seeks to welcome gay people of faith. He's even stated he'd attend and celebrate the weddings of his gay friends and loved ones. I loathe Exodus and the 'ex-gay' movement but this development seems to have come from a place of genuine remorse and reformation. I hope so.

To use a biblical metaphor, Chambers is simply going to put old wine into old wineskins. The apology is meaningless because he's basically saying his views haven't changed and he's going to refocus. And, as one writer put it, there are not enough words to undo the damage they have done. "Exodus I is dead. Long live Exodus II."
