What's the Best Way to Quit A Job

and also give your boss a great big fuck you?

I've been thinking about just packing my shit at the end of today (I'm the last one in the office) and leaving my key to the office on my desk and not saying a word.

Unless you have another job or a nice fat savings, I would advise against it. Look for a job when you're not working. If you quit, you will not get unemployment.

The job market is a nightmare. Don't believe what you hear about unemployment going down. It's just as bad as ever....

I've been out of work over a year and I have applied for thousands of jobs. Living wage jobs are scarce right now...

A guy at work went on his break...and never came back.

by Anonymousreply 206/19/2013

I say take a dump on your bosses desk before you leave.

by Anonymousreply 306/19/2013

Once upon a time, you faxed a copy of the office directory to a headhunter, performed an upper-decker, and left cabbage in the company fridge.

Now, you provide two weeks notice and hope security escorts you out the door as soon as it hits corporate e-mail.

Your plan is a good one if:

a) You have not been on the job for a very long time (i.e., would not have a big gap in your resume)

b) You do not have back pay or benefits coming to you...i.e, vacation days not taken, any sort of pension, etc.

c) You will be able to exist financially without getting unemployment benefits.

When interviewing for a new job...IF you can get an prepared to have a story ready for the time elapsed between your previous job and the one you're leaving. (Some thoughts: taking a year off to travel, caring for a sick parent, etc.)

I did this once, except I just left for lunch one day and never went back. But I had only been on that job for a couple of months and HATED it...and my boss.

I got offered another job yesterday.

Basically a freelance gig I was doing on the side is wanting more from me. I'd be making what I am doing both jobs.

I've been at the freelance thing almost as long as this job I hate and would leave off this job on a resume in the future.

by Anonymousreply 606/19/2013

Then what are you waiting for, OP?

by Anonymousreply 706/19/2013

Well, I didn't have to quit.

They just laid off my whole department an hour ago.

Kind of explains why they've been making us so miserable.

Life is weird.

by Anonymousreply 806/19/2013

Why create unnecessary enemies? You're leaving so do the niceties.

by Anonymousreply 906/19/2013

Wait till you have a pre-approved multi-week vacation and then on the last day tell them that you simply won't be coming back since you only have to give notice equal to the time of the pre-approved vacation.

What R9 said.. you just never know and it's better to keep things pleasant/civil. However, people are people..

by Anonymousreply 1106/19/2013

R9 is correct; I left a place and was super gracious; 3 months later I was on the market and two months after that I was re-hired by my original employer.

Rub fresh dog shit up under his desk where he can smell it but can't find it, that'll teach the louse.

by Anonymousreply 1306/19/2013

As I said at R8, I didn't have to quit.

My group was pulled into a meeting and they let 4 of us go. Was really awkward being laid off with my coworkers, although one of my coworkers doesn't know because she was out sick. The two young women who also got let go with me both started crying and I sat there thinking that it couldn't have played out any better if I had planned it, despite at just how surreal it was.

I feel really badly about my coworkers. One is a single mother with an infant. I'm sure neither of them had been let go like this before.

They wanted us to stay until Friday. I packed my stuff, removed myself as admin from the company Facebook and Twitter accounts, handed my boss my key to the office and said that I wouldn't be coming in tomorrow and thanked him for the opportunity.

I am kind of bummed I didn't get to be a douchebag, but this will probably work out much better in the long run.

by Anonymousreply 1406/19/2013

OP, you didn't sign the post at R8 so no one knew it was you.

by Anonymousreply 1506/20/2013

Best way to fire someone.

by Anonymousreply 1606/20/2013

Hope you get unempoyment OP. I tried really hard to post this yesterday, but was shut out due to DL being "prime" ALL evening. This clip is of the best way to quit a job...

by Anonymousreply 1706/20/2013

Fuck the boss's secretary, you know the one that blows him when office hours are over. She's a girl? So what the fucker will simmer with frustration and hate when he finds out that a gay guy has fucked his woman.

by Anonymousreply 1806/20/2013

I feel a very big shoe is about to fall on someone.....Eeek!

by Anonymousreply 1906/20/2013

Apparently you don't quit your job this way if your boss is smarter and more vindictive than you are.

And the boss is hot. She should have blown him and shut up.

Barbra Streisand said when she was switchboard operator in the Garment District, she got pissed off one day, pulled down all the cords, and walked out.
