Should I give up my dream of being a male model?
I have spent 10 years trying be a model that earned me nothing but a desperate reputation in the modeling industry. Not 1 agency would sign me or find me a job. As I continued to fight for my succeed it has set myself back 10 years behind my peers. Wasted a lot of time trying to make it in life that gave me a jobless, homelessness and countless excuses. So many rejections.
The digitals you sent me look like a younger boy with great skin. In person you don't look as strong as the pictures. - RED MODELS
Your rough facial skin were the reasons we didnt take digitals on you or ask for your contact info. We wish you the best. - FORD MODELS EUROPE
I still have not found my success or a better story to tell unless i lied so i could impress my friends. It's becoming a real problem because i just getting older and lonely and even more desperate. Should i denounce my dream and search for better opportunities and a new place in life somewhere else ? Or should i stay and risk wasting another 10 years wishing i should have done something differently ?
I just don't see why i should stay and fight for something that has never worked for me and gave me the same results year after year. If no one not thinks or even believes i am a model i think that speaks for itself...
But then there are people who tell me I should follow my dream, believe in myself and stick it out.
What would you do?

10 years is too long to fail at anything. Modeling especially since you yesterdays news by the time you reach your mid 20s.
You may be good looking, but so are a lot of people. Sure people told you to be a model but what did they know? Were any of them actually in the business?
Like anything else, it takes more then just the title. People tell me all the time I am so creative. But that dose not mean I can direct a movie or be a famous fashion designer. Same goes for modeling. You might be better looking then most people but that dose not mean you would make a good model.
Maybe you just dont have "the look" that they want. Twink is not in right now, scruffy hot manly guy is popular. Could be decades before the right look comes along that you might fit in.
Since 2 of the agencies made basically the same response, I would take that as a hint. It's not like one said you had big feet. They both commented on your skin and age.
You should have been working on a back up plan anyway. Models dont last that long because if the young age they need. Its not like you model 40 hours a week for 10 years.
If I were you I would just drop the whole modeling thing and go for something not based on your looks. Otherwise all you can do is D list type modeling like showrooms, conventions, handing out flyers or working at Disneyland as a "cast member".
|by Desperate and poor model||reply 23||06/14/2013|
R23, the thing is, he was young when he started, and they still didnt want him. His skin isn't great, but it's not horrid, it could have been worked around. The problem is he is not attractive, much less model material. His weird long face seems distorted, as in acromegaly.

I love this thread.
Mr. Snowden, can we please have some more details on the type of clothes in which you want to prance down the runway? Fetish wear? Swimsuits?
Do you have full-body shots available, preferably unclothed?
And don't believe all those posters who tell you 10 years is too long to "work" unsuccessfully on trying to become a model! Why, lots of world-famous male models made it big in their 30's and 40's. Not everyone can start right out as a Derek Zoolander.

Why are people today SO obsessed with being "famous"? Everyone wants to be a actor, singer, model, or sportsperson. Why can't people realize that very few people get to do one of those things and make a living from it?
Hate to tell you this OP, but you have to face reality. And that reality is that 99% of us have to actually work at a "regular" job to earn money and never become rich. They don't call it "The 1%" for nothing you know.

|by Desperate and poor model||reply 56||06/14/2013|
OP, I wii NOT make fun of your dream, but I can tell you that as a man old enough to be your father and with dreams of his own, that dreams don't always come true. In fact they rarely come true. at some point you have to let them go and move on. There is nothing wrong with that. Do it while you are still you g enough to make. Real life for yourself. The reality is that you are a slim, good looking guy, but there are thousands just like you, they all have the same dream. You bet 10 years of your life on a crap shoot. the next 10 years will be more of the same except you will be 10 years older competing against guys 10 years younger. Most men who model do it on the side, or they do it for a few years to make some decent money and then move on. Even models who work, often still have to,wait tables. I read an interview a few days ago with the actor Michael Nader. He is in his 60s, and has had an amazing career, but is just now finding his way back into acting after having been blackballed due his his drug use and frivolous law suites. Anyway, speaking on what a "mean business" acting can be, with lies and disappointments and broken promises, he said that there are men his age who never made it, are still trying and it has broken their hearts. He said that some people wait too long to let go of their dreams, and ruin their lives instead of moving on. The late Henry Fonda said the same thing. I think this is true for models. Please OP, don't let this happen to you, Let go, move on. there is a wonderful life waiting for you. I wish you well.

|by Desperate and poor model||reply 61||06/14/2013|
OP, Serious answer. Come to Vegas. MAGIC (Men's Apparel Guild Convention) hires tons of size 40 regular models. My friends all say it's boring, as all you're doing is standing around being stared at like a piece of meat. If you're good at sales, are super charming, and cut your price, someone will hire you for the many other conventions. Then get a 2nd job "modelling" and doing sales demonstrations for the local Costco or Whole Foods. My slightly overweight 40's gay friend makes a great living doing just that. Of course you might be tempted to get a restaurant job where with tips you can make $75,000 yr.
Male models often have "patrons" that ensure their employment. Like females, there's "a current look" that everyone else copies until they also develop a "name." The Armani cologne model I used to know got modelling jobs initially because he'd show up looking like the latest Hollywood stud, from John Travolta to Brad Pitt to George Michael. He was also fanatically well groomed. If he gained a pound, he'd be paranoid; goes with the territory. So does the constant rejection and insults and dissing about your physical appearance. That's why the truly best looking people avoid the entertainment fields. They don't have something to prove.
|by Desperate and poor model||reply 62||06/14/2013|
People! What part of 'THIS IS A TROLL POST' did you not understand?
|by Desperate and poor model||reply 63||06/14/2013|
I used to cast models.
Worked with tons of male models.
Most realise it's might be a fun way to see Paris/London/Milan for a year or two, but that's it. You can expect no more. You can count the list of all time top male models on a leper's hand, and even David Gandy's income wouldn't make Linda Evangelista get out of bed.
OP, you haven't got to first base because you're simply not photogenic: you have deep set eyes, a thin face, and thin mouth that give you a slightly desperate haunted appearance in those photographs you posted -- whatever personal charm you may have in real life. However, the screed on the website you linked to shows you to be unhealthily self-obsessed. People who feel the need to claim they are sincere or, in your case, " the most charming person you could ever possibly meet" are usually, in my long experience, the polar opposite of what they state. Genuinely sincere or charming people never state it, or feel the need to: such desperation is alien to them.
Over the years I've encountered many self-deluded self-obsessed gay young men such as you, and if they don't suicide or snuff themselves with drugs, their increasing desperation becomes a slow slide into deep depression and/or psychosis after 40. No one who cares for you has obviously dared to give you the wake up call and cold water bitch slap you richly deserve. So I guess you'll want to mollycoddle yourself with therapy for a few more decades to prolong your endless adolescence and stave off what you need to face up to. Or, you could save yourself several decades and tens of thousands of dollars and simply decide to grow up now.

|by Desperate and poor model||reply 67||06/14/2013|
I ended on a down-note. Let me end on an up-note. If you want to win life don't waste a moment trying to be something you're not. Play the hand you've been dealt. But give it 120%. That's the way you win. Like 99.9% of human being on the planet, God didn't give you model looks. But you wanted to do showbiz could possibly play a young zombie or a haunted whistleblower, and similar roles. And they would be infinitely more satisfying than simply making dumb faces to stroke your ego.
|by Desperate and poor model||reply 68||06/14/2013|
Honestly, modelling is a crappy job. It really is. Short-lived at best. You are definitely above average by a lot in the looks department but you are not stunning which is what these modelling agencies want. You should definitely learn a trade of some sort instead of some crappy "job" like modelling. Something like being an engineer or a doctor would work since these types of jobs do not depend on how your face/skin fares which is completely out of your control.
|by Desperate and poor model||reply 71||06/14/2013|
By the way, I just googled Abercrombie and fitch models and I have to say that most of the models there seem to be very buff (muscled) but they look kind of like you except in one MAJOR respect. THE EYES. I noticed that you have a really timid and shy look aura about you.
The A & F models all exude confidence and aggression and some even have the swagger going on. People like these guys could sell a product because generally speaking men like confident looking guys, are attracted to them.
I think you need some work done on your confidence. That will improve your looks greatly. But as I've said already in R71, give up. Seriously. Modelling isn't a real job.
|by Desperate and poor model||reply 72||06/14/2013|
R72, I agree. The Armani cologne model that I knew said he was always being told by photographers to "give me that attitude." It's an image that sells products, The hidden message is that buying said item will improve one's life.
OP, you do not look wealthy or hip in your pics. We want to emulate those who are superior or more knowledgeable and definitely more powerful. So you really need to work on your expressions if you want to secure even D-level modeling jobs. Pick up a copy of GQ for an example. Remember your eyes must always be very alive and project a very strong point-of-view that relates to a potential product to be sold.

OMG! I think...no, wait. I'm staying out of this one.
|by Desperate and poor model||reply 86||06/15/2013|
OP, I'm going to be completely honest with you and try to take it as constructive criticism and don't be offended. I was signed with Boss Models in 2009 and have been modeling pretty steadily ( steadily for a male non big name model which isn't saying much) for the past 3 or 4 years, primarily in New York, Milan, and Paris. I do runway and print and hoping to land a big campaign eventually. Since I see male models fairly regularly, I kind of have a pretty good idea about what most agencies look for in potential models. Unfortunately, and I'm going to be honest, you don't have the look that top agencies typically sign. And it's primarily your lack of facial symmetry and bone structure. The photographer did a pretty good job with your photos but you have the kind of bone structure that doesn't lend itself to being photogenic.
Your bone structure causes the lighting to hit your face in an unflattering angle or agnles and come across as drab and dull ( I'll bet you're more attractive in person). Of course one could get plastic surgery to change the structure of the face and thus cause the lighting to hit your face in a more flattering way. But that's pretty costly and honestly not worth it in your case or any case in my opinion because it's too drastic. Most only do it when they need slight adjustments to improve the way the light hits their face. So without knowing your age, height, and measurements, just from the pics I suggest you look into doing something else. And I'm not trying to be a dick even though it may look like that in written form.
You can always stay within the industry and maybe get into photography, styling, model managements, scouting.... And to be honest, those things are often much more lucrative and steady employment. You can take a look at my portfolio to get an idea of what Boss is looking for ( or look around on the site). Someone mentioned that having a current look that's in at the moment is very helpful when trying to sign and this is very true. When I signed with Boss, Jake Gyllenhaal was pretty popular and the fact that I had a very similar look helped me get signed at Boss. My agent still calls me Jake G. I don't think I look like him at all but most people tell me I do, so I don't know. Anyway, good-luck with whatever you decide. I hope this helped. And trust me, you're a nice looking guy, just not what top agencies are looking for at the moment.
|by Desperate and poor model||reply 87||06/15/2013|
R87, I was the poster that stated that there are trends in male and female models. What is current? I can't believe they're looking for Jake G copycats; he isn't billed as a sex symbol. Also do you know what per centage of male models have plastic surgery?

Please! Multiple posters are not ignoring diddly-squat, They are directly addressing issues with Mr. Snowden's looks to the fake model, as if the NSA "whistleblower" were the one seeking modeling career advice (yes, most of us got the "seeking new horizons now that my day job's busted" joke).
The ones in on the joke have another nuance to their advice altogether.

Follow your bliss, OP, follow your dream. Look at me--and obese, spoiled, idiot-child and now ruler of a country.

Oh, honey yes. It's time.

You were never a model and after having looked at your pictures you will never become a model. Time to move on to other careers.

OP, you're nothing but a token whore pushing/advertising your 'business'as a cam whore. However, you should take advantage of your looks now because you aren't going to age well.
Aren't you the one that slept around the country? Weren't you also 'raising' money for a hearing aid a couple of months ago?

OP doll, fill us in on how your modeling career has been going. Have you blinked Calvin Klein yet? TIA

Curious... How many young male models that actually made it had to suck cock or have their cock sucked along the way to get there???

I have no idea. What do you look like?
|by Desperate and poor model||reply 123||03/08/2014|
I don't know what you look like OP but even if you're hot as fuck this is a long shot. I grew up wanting to be a novelist but in my 20s I had to accept that it wouldn't happen. C'est la vie.

Who digs up these old threads? R87 is right though. Agencies don’t look for a certain person, but rather for a certain type. When you are picked for a job, they don’t look at your hair color or eye color. That’s irrelevant, for that’s easily changeable. I’m a natural blond, but I had my hair dyed brown, black, red (eek), depending on what the clients look for. However, you have to be at least 6 ft. tall, slender and have a very symmetric face and not be too pretty. And no, you don’t have to suck designer dick. OP I’ll say it the crass way my agency would say it: You’re definitely no model material. Nose is too big, face too long, and those dumbo ears ...

I used to be a model in the Sears catalog. Now I'm just a truck stop waitress who give hj in the toilet.

R126, Are there trends in male modelling? Are certain types more popular depending on the economic health of the world, or whether a blond or brunette actor is deemed to be hot? I can imagine if a movie makes a great deal of money, and it's believed to be credited to a particular hottie, than there will be a comparable demand for models that somewhat resemble that actor.

I’d say the trend in male fashion modeling in the last years is a skinnier, slightly androgynous, boyish look. They still want you to be ripped, but with not too many muscles unless it’s for underwear or catalogue shoots.

My aunt went to the Barbazon School of Modeling when I was a kid.
(She then worked as a super market cashier and then got married)
