More Gays Are Raising Kids in Mississippi Than in California

If you were shocked to learn that Utah is gayer than us,then you will probably feel a little confused, anxious, let down, etc. to learn that the state of Mississippi has more same-sex couple raising kids than any other state in the nation. In other words, they are not fleeing to the states that allow same-sex marriage. Now might be a good time to remind readers that Mississippi was ranked one of the top 10 worst states to raise a kid period.

Now for your burning question: WTF?

A new study by the Williams Institute, a think tank at UCLA, released this very insightful and somewhat curious infographic that shows states that have a constitutional amendment on same-sex marriage are the very locations where gays are opting to raise their kids.

Researchers found that roughly 26 percent of same-sex couples in Mississippi are raising kids, compared to just 15 percent in California, both states that have a constitutional amendment on gay marriage.

And here's more proof that Utah is attracting more gays than San Francisco: Salt Lake City had the most same-sex couples raising kids than any other city in the nation. By the way, Utah also has a constitutional amendment on gay marriage.

But head over to states where gay marriage is legal and you will find fewer couples raising kids. In Maine, only 13 percent of same-sex couples are rearing children and about 16 percent in New York.

We called Equality California to see if folks over there could make sense of this. We'll update this post when we get some insight from them.

This is all by percentage percentage of population though. So your headline is misleading.

The "more gays are raising kids in..." language is misleading. What they're actually talking about is proportion:

[quote]Researchers found that roughly 26 percent of same-sex couples in Mississippi are raising kids, compared to just 15 percent in California

So just a few gay couples could be raising kids in MS, while huge numbers could be in CA. 25% can be 1 out of 4. 15% can be 75,000 out of 500,000

If you are poor you are stuck. You cannot afford to pick up and move to a more expensive state like California or Massachusetts where gay people are more prevalent. Mississippi is the poorest state in the nation.

It's not my headline, R1. It's the headlilne of the article.

I think the notion that more Gays follow traditional family models in states that emphasize traditional family models is somehow... unsurprising.

Mississippi is one of the states leading the statistics in out-of-wedlock pregnancies and births to teen mothers. A lot of the states with higher percentages are also southern states that have the problems. Gay teenagers are under all sorts of pressures to be or appear straight so maybe it's the case young lesbians in those states succumb to social and cultural pressures and follow along. Then as they get older, they're more frank and open about their sexuality and become involved in lesbian relationships.

Also worth noting that the metro areas noted, except, SLC have either large African American or Latino populations. I assume fertility rates among teens is higher in these populations.

Thanks for stating the obvious, R7. Do you have anything else to add? I also doubt fem southern boys are knocking up the types of beards they choose. Too many Kristen Chenoweth types out there to pick from.

Gay men and women in traditionally conservative states are just probably more likely to seek and maintain long-term relationships than people in states with larger gay populations. City gays prefer to remain single and be sluts.
