And share why this individual stands out for you. That would be cool too.

I kept a list of famous/historical people I admire, with a few dozen entries. I realized that Alan Turing was the only homosexual on the list. So Turing it is.

As a high school student Williams made me realize that homosexuality and the life of an artist are intricately interwoven.

I read R11 and busted out laughing, I hope that was the intent.
I agree with R10 that Alan Turing was one of the most accomplished gay people in history.
Currently? Rachel Maddow would actually be up there. I have a lot of respect for her.

I sure hope so too, but for some reason, I get the feeling they weren't joking.
Hope I'm wrong!

RuPaul. I admire her. She leveraged fierce drag into a respectable music and television career, and now with RPDR's evolving success, she's helping other DQ's.
|by Anonymous||reply 17||05/22/2013|
Rachel Maddow all day. I'm straight and have never had a lesbian experience, but she is the most enticing person on the planet to me at this time.
As for the men, I'd say Dwayne Johnson.

R18 Why do you straights keep coming onto a gay site? Run along now to your ONTD and IMDB boards, honey!
|by Anonymous||reply 19||05/22/2013|
Neil Patrick Harris, obviously.

I've gone back to Bradley Cooper. He was on Jay Leno last nigt and has definitely toned down the wail hairy look. His suit trousers were so tight he had trouble sitting down. The girls went wild. They always do, poor things.
Jay asked him about bring a girl home, what with his mom living with him and all. The momentary look on his face was priceless.

Stephen Sondheim - I wish he had written something explicitly about homosexuality when he was on a roll in the 70s. Road Show has a gay couple, but it's not his best work by any stretch.
Tennessee Williams - linking sexuality with great art is as big a cliché as pinpointing alcoholism as a source of inspiration, but with Williams the draw is irresistible. The more you know about his life, the more enjoyable it is to read or see his plays. Even his flops usually have something worthwhile in them.

James E Reilly - linking soap opera with great art is as big a cliché as pinpointing demonic possession as a source of inspiration, but with Reilly the draw is irresistible. The more you know about his life, the more enjoyable it is to see his soaps. Even "Passions" usually had something worthwhile in it.

Peter Tatchell. I don't agree with all his opinions, but he puts himself out there, with a generally consistent view on gay rights and civil liberties, take the knocks ( including getting beaten up, too often) and helps to make a difference.
Very quiet and unassuming off-duty, and has given up a lot for his beliefs. If anyone wants, they can contribute to supporting his work - he's not making himself rich out of donations.
