The acting teacher on Real Housewives said that film acting is just being yourself

and then he asked Alexis who was in Forrest Gump, Forrest or Tom Hanks. The right answer was Tom Hanks...but I wanted to say Forrest Gump....so actor types...discuss.

Some actors are morpher types, such that you sometimes can't recognise them from film to film. They have an ability to change their body language and speech to the point that you don't realise it is them until the movie is well under way. Cate Blanchett springs to mind. So does Christian Bale.

Then there are those who continually portray the same version of a certain personality type which we assume is partially based on their own personality type. Tom Hanks would be one of those. It doesn't mean he gives shallow performances, it just means that the person he plays is often in some respect "the willful innocent" whose eyes get opened to something. He does this type of role often and he does it well.

Most actors fall into category B and they would do well to know it. There is nothing wrong with playing a certain type well and mostly sticking to it. Often when an actor in this category tries to go all method and become something else entirely, it has hilarious results. Brad Pitt comes to mind. He's excellent playing the good looking type who is slightly or very twisted, but falls on his face when he tries to get all serious.
