What cars have you owned?

I think one's Car History can be interesting and revealing. Especially the first car.

List YOUR cars - don't give a 'family car' history...

And before you scream "ElderG4Y", the years listed are the cars', not mine!

1968 Ford Mustang - boy, did I have a lot of sex in that car!

1966 Rambler Station Wagon - not so much 1986 Nissan Maxima 1994 Dodge Shadow 2002 Hyundai Elantra 2006 Hyundai Elantra

I'm 56, and I've only had four cars in my life. I tend to just keep them until they're not drivable. They are: 1972 Audi Fox, 1985 Saab 900, 1993 Saab 900, 2001 Jeep Wrangler. My current car -- the Jeep -- is 12 years old, but doesn't even have 80M miles on it. I work at home -- I'm an artist -- so don't drive much. Hey, check out my web site!!!

[quote]I'm 50 and I've had 50+ new cars since I was 16.

Given that the average new car drops 15% or more when it leaves the lot, using an average of $20,000 per car and a 3% interest rate, your retirement savings are about $173,000 lighter than they could be.

Increase that to $30,000 and a 20% drop and a 4% interest rate, and you're down $420,000.

Love that new car smell though, I guess.

1991 Toyota Corolla.. My folks didn't have a lot of money, but they bought me a new car to take off for college in. Wasn't an exciting car, but it was fine and reliable. Gave it back to my mom when I had my first job and could afford to buy my own car:

1996 Toyota Rav 4. Loved this car! Drove it for a long time.

2004 Volkswagen Passat. Loved the look of this car but when it did have problems, they were pricey to fix.

1979 Chevrolet, Chevette 4 speed! What a ride! College days.

1988 Nissan Sentra, piece of shit, handled horribly, totaled.

1987 Mercury Lynx, (gussied up escort) 5 speed, purchased w/ low miles, ran 200,000 miles. Great vehicle.

1994 Ford Explorer XLT, big rear door, great to haul cargo. Awful steering and handling, like driving a marshmallow.

2004 Infiniti FX awd, a bit too hippy for me, a sweet drive though. Powerful.

*2005 BMW X3 3.0, Almost perfect to drive.

*2008 Toyota Camry Hybrid, totally tricked out. The cd player is a joke to load, not bad, boring to drive, but easy, like a go-cart.

*2011 Infiniti M37, big, broad, and powerful. Fantastic electronics, navigation.

*2013 BMW 335i, Convertible, okay, it's not quite as fun a the 2003 version. Hardtop convertible is nice. The navigation is awkward.

1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee, nice enough, wouldn't do again.

2000 Lexus RX 300, great vehicle, ride, handling...

2002 Jaguar S type, piece of shit, ford decimated a brand. Dumped lease early.

2003 BMW 335i convertible, totally fun to drive,

2003 Lexus RX 350, navigation was easy to use, great, but not as nice as the 2000, a little too soft.

2005 Acura RL awd, one of the nicest sedans ever. Easy nav use.

2006 Acura MDX awd, nice, a bit wide. Good nav.

*2012 Acura RDX awd, nice size, nice handling, easy to drive. Nav still great.

1988 VW Fox - best car I ever owned. It was a free car, to begin with, when I was dirt poor - abandoned by a college kid, and the mother just wanted it gone. It had a book value of $1500, just for the engine and in the thirteen years I drove the little bugger, I didn't even put that much into it. All it needed was tires, when it came into my hands. The odometer stopped at 385,000-some, and stayed stopped for ten years, so I really don't know how many miles were on it when I finally sold it - it had become almost impossible to find parts, for it - - to a guy who was dropping a new engine in it to race it. I get teary-eyed, just thinking about it. Mein Dieter.

by Anonymousreply 4405/18/2013

2003 Saab 9-3 (the first year GM owned them...and tons of problems)

2007 Mustang convertible (not as fast as I thought even with the V6)

1985 Toyota Corolla -- given to me by my mother when I graduated from high school (she bought a new Corolla). Totaled in 1991.

1987 Toyota Tercel -- after I totaled the Corolla, my sister was trying to sell her Tercel so I bought it from her for $2000. Sis had 4 kids and so it was pretty much shit by then. After a few years, I saved enough to get a new vehicle.

1994 Ford Ranger -- bought it used in 1995, it had 18k miles on it; drove it for the next 15 years, by which time it had over 300k miles on it; by 2010, I was ready for a new vehicle -- it broke down twice that summer on the side of highway and I was tired of the stick shift (never, never again), so....

2010 Ford Focus -- first car I bought new and I love it, drives beautiful, great gas mileage, a dream.

I'm nearing 60 and I've only bought two cars.

I just never wanted to put that much money into rolling stock that depreciates so badly.

I handled the depreciation factor by driving my cars till the remaining value was next to nil. The one I drive now is 13YO.

I had much rather have a better investment portfolio than a shiny new ride every few years. My self-worth is not tied up in chrome, leather, speedometers, and gasoline.
