Is it the most beautiful place in America, or is it just the beautiful friendly people who make it seem that way.

I don't think Lake Tahoe is that blue anymore.
|by Anonymous||reply 1||05/17/2013|
The blue of the lake depends on how blue the sky is that day. I spent many a summer there in my youth. Lucky me.
When my dad came back from World War II - a POW in Nazi Germany for a year - he spent a month there in a cabin down at the lake. He has seen some and experienced some horrific things. He says the lake saved him. It has always been a special place for us. We always had a photo of Lake Tahoe in our house. But it always was "the lake" not Lake Tahoe.
The development that was allowed there though is a shame. And there's a real problem with run off.

yes it is R1
|by Anonymous||reply 3||05/17/2013|
That's good to know, R3. I lived away from CA for many years but recall much talk about its problems when I left in the late '80s. I returned a few years ago. I kept seeing "Keep Lake Tahoe Blue" bumper stickers in my area and thought there were still ongoing problems. I'll take them as indication of positive impact instead.

I rented a cabin up there for a few years during the ski season. I like Lake Tahoe but it's kind of a lonely place if you're by yourself, which I was. Beautiful though. The drive up is very nice. The lake is too cold to ever go swimming or water skiing. In the springtime it is ringed by snow-capped mountains.

I've lived there (Zephyr Cove) for years. It's just about the most beautiful place I've ever been. You can still see the bottom of the lake, when it's calm, for about 200 yards out. Only thing that sucks is the water is sooo cold for too long. Great tho if you have a boat.

Larry Ellison's compound is for sale for a mere $28.5 million.
|by Anonymous||reply 7||05/17/2013|
It's a shame they didn't make more of it into protected park land. WAY too much development there.
|by Anonymous||reply 8||05/17/2013|
I'm bluer and way better looking.
|by Anonymous||reply 9||05/17/2013|
R9 And a National Park.
|by Anonymous||reply 10||05/17/2013|
r4 then why make the statement when you didn't personally see it yourself? You relied on bumpers stickers?
|by Anonymous||reply 11||05/17/2013|
I'm the cleanest lake in America. And I'm a Finger Lake.
|by Anonymous||reply 12||05/17/2013|
If people are still fighting the fight, R11, one might reasonably conclude that there are issues still.
|by Anonymous||reply 13||05/17/2013|
There is or was a little nude beach called Secret Cove on the Nevada side down a long descending trail. I used to spend every Monday up there (my day off) when I lived in Reno in the 90s. It was heaven on earth.
|by Anonymous||reply 14||05/17/2013|
Doesn't make sense to me r13. I don't comment on the physical beauty or personal aspects of something unless I have been there to see for myself.
|by Anonymous||reply 15||05/17/2013|
R12 Don't the Finger Lakes cause congenital deformities?
|by Anonymous||reply 16||05/17/2013|
Waldo is one of the purest lakes in the world. It has no permanent inlet to bring nutrients into the lake for plant growth. The lack of plant life contributes to its purity.
|by Anonymous||reply 17||05/17/2013|
What are you talking about R16?
|by Anonymous||reply 18||05/17/2013|
meh.. Lake Louise is prettier.
|by Anonymous||reply 19||05/17/2013|
Lake Louise is prettier because it has such a heavy load of silt, giving it a green color.
|by Anonymous||reply 20||05/17/2013|
Tahoe is very beautiful as long as you're not looking at the ugly over-development.
|by Anonymous||reply 21||05/17/2013|
I alway wanted to take a lake tour so I could see the site where they filmed Michael Corleone's compound.
Sadly, they told me those tours were halted for 'privacy'. Pfft, I still wanted to see it.

I was thinking of backpacking the Tahoe Rim Trail this summer.

I was thinking of rimming the backpacker on the Tahoe Trail this summer.
|by Anonymous||reply 24||05/17/2013|
Haven't been for many years.
I miss it so.
|by Anonymous||reply 25||05/17/2013|
Well, thanks R11/15 for taking the effort to let me know how you feel.
|by Anonymous||reply 26||05/17/2013|
|by Anonymous||reply 27||05/17/2013|
Did someone say blue?
|by Anonymous||reply 28||05/17/2013|
I hope you hike the trail, you'll love it.
|by Anonymous||reply 29||05/17/2013|
Beautiful lake, surrounded by serious mountains, hiking, skiing, and casinos. I visit several times a year, but I wouldn't call the most beautiful place in the US, or even in the Sierras.
Boating and fishing enthusiasts may differ.
|by Anonymous||reply 30||05/17/2013|
What bothers me are those people that are glued to their slot machines at the casino for 48 hours and never look out the window to that beautiful lake!
|by Anonymous||reply 31||05/18/2013|
Tahoe is meh at best and poor people are not beautiful. I'm guessing you were on a Stevie wonder tour for the recently sightless?
|by Anonymous||reply 32||05/18/2013|
The area away from the lake is beautiful too, or at least it was in 1976. I need to return to that area.
|by Anonymous||reply 33||05/18/2013|
Yes there are other small lakes that are a little higher. Great trails to hike up to them
