Dumb Characters in Sitcoms

Rose Nylund, Joey Tribbiani, Potsie Weber...many great sitcoms have that character who seems two bricks short of a load. Angie from "Gimmie A Break" was always one of my favorites.

by Anonymousreply 10105/21/2013

And op of this thread!

by Anonymousreply 105/11/2013

Ba-dum-bum-CHING!

by Anonymousreply 205/11/2013

dumb is funny

by Anonymousreply 305/11/2013

Buddy Lembeck (Willie Aames) in Charles In Charge.

Georgette Baxter (Georgia Engel) in The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

by Anonymousreply 405/11/2013

Don't forget about me!

by Anonymousreply 505/11/2013

Vivian

(The reason why Rue McClanahan was originally supposed to play Rose in GG ... and Betty White, slut extraordinaire from MTM, was supposed to play Blanche)

by Anonymousreply 605/11/2013

Just Jack!

by Anonymousreply 705/11/2013

How dare you say Potsie was dumb!

by Anonymousreply 805/11/2013

In the kid/teen department, Joey "Whoa" Russo does not even hold a candle to me (or the actor who plays me for that matter).

by Anonymousreply 905/11/2013

Sinclair from Living Single was dumb. She was the "Rose" of that shoe.

by Anonymousreply 1005/11/2013

R8, Potsie actually got dumber as the show went on.

by Anonymousreply 1105/11/2013

Err...she was the Rose of that SHOW.

by Anonymousreply 1205/11/2013

Jordan Catalano from My So-Called Life, Phoebe from Friends.

by Anonymousreply 1305/11/2013

Whoever the ditzy girl was on Ellen. She never seemed to work again after the show was over, you never saw any of the supporting actors again except for the fat guy for awhile.

by Anonymousreply 1405/11/2013

No character was dumber than Chrissy Snow on Three's Company. She started out ditzy, but still sharp. The last few years she was on I guess the producers hated Suzanne Somers and they made the character painly stupid. She also became unattractive with a hairstyle a 10 year old would wear and a pound of makeup.

by Anonymousreply 1505/11/2013

I loved Nick on "Family Ties," and the way Alex would patronize him.

by Anonymousreply 1605/11/2013

cousin geri from "the facts of life"

by Anonymousreply 1705/11/2013

Kelly Bundy

by Anonymousreply 1805/11/2013

I really don't think Phoebe was dumb at all, and neither was Ellen's silly friend. They were just quirky characters who refused to yield to convention, and perhaps a little distracted at times, but not dumb.

by Anonymousreply 1905/11/2013

Dahlinks, do not forget that the dumb one also could be stylish, funny, charming, unexpectedly wise, and the leading lady.

Kisses!

by Anonymousreply 2005/11/2013

Cindy Lubbock from "Just the Ten of Us", played by Jamie Luner

Vinton Harper became dumb as a doorknob when "Mama's Family" went into syndication.

by Anonymousreply 2105/11/2013

What, r14! Yeah, I post on Datalounge, what of it!

by Anonymousreply 2205/11/2013

Kelly on "Married With Children"

Joey on "Blossom"

by Anonymousreply 2305/11/2013

Howard on "The Bob Newhart Show"

Homer Simpson and Ralph Wiggum on "The Simpsons"

by Anonymousreply 2405/11/2013

r23 on "No Need To Read"

by Anonymousreply 2505/11/2013

Woody from "Cheers"

by Anonymousreply 2605/11/2013

I tried to remember your name r22. Yes you were successful after the show, but I considered you part of the Ellen main cast, not really a supporting actor. Unless everyone but Ellen was supporting.

by Anonymousreply 2705/11/2013

The dumb redhead babe with the smoking body in "Two And A Half Men" who later became the shallow blonde with the smoking body in "Drop Dead Diva"

by Anonymousreply 2805/11/2013

R25 Sorry, some of us have a life and just skim the threads rather than reading every post word for word.

by Anonymousreply 2905/11/2013

COACH on Cheers

by Anonymousreply 3005/11/2013

Really. So far they are all B list wannabes.

by Anonymousreply 3105/11/2013

[quote]Kelly Bundy

Well, in actuality, I would argue that all four members of the Bundy family were the "dumb character".

by Anonymousreply 3205/11/2013

Mark Healy from Roseanne.

by Anonymousreply 3305/11/2013

Jethro Bodine

by Anonymousreply 3405/11/2013

nancy on roseanne lol. jackie was pretty dumb too, dj, bev, crystal

by Anonymousreply 3505/11/2013

sinclair's boyfriend overton was dumb as rocks too, and woody's eventual wife on cheers too

by Anonymousreply 3605/11/2013

was marlee matlin ever in a sitcom?

by Anonymousreply 3705/11/2013

Vint Harper on Mama's Family. Mama once told him, "Vint, you've had some lame ideas in your lifetime, but this one qualifies you for handicapped parking."

by Anonymousreply 3805/11/2013

[quote]Sorry, some of us have a life

25 miserable posts.

It's not like you are being asked to read pages and pages. When lazy folk like you repeat the same inanities every other post, not only do you take away from the already compromised quality of a thread, but you just bore the rest of us, making US read double and triple tripe.

In other words, you're a selfish princess. "God forbid I have to read some because I have a life, but let everybody else read the same shit over and over. Not my problem."

That life you have must be full of hardship if 25 sentences bend you out of shape.

by Anonymousreply 3905/11/2013

Randy Hickey, Earl's brother on My Name is Earl.

by Anonymousreply 4005/11/2013

Gracie Allen, Burns and Allen.

by Anonymousreply 4105/11/2013

Gomer Pyle, Gomer Pyle, USMC.

by Anonymousreply 4205/11/2013

Ed Norton from "The Honeymooners" was one of the originals on TV.

by Anonymousreply 4305/11/2013

Jack McFarland

by Anonymousreply 4405/11/2013

GILLIGAN!

by Anonymousreply 4505/11/2013

Marsha Brady. Cindy too. And Bobby and Peter and Greg. But mostly Marsha.

by Anonymousreply 4605/11/2013

R22 Jeremy, to verify, we need nude photos of that hairy body and a cock shot.

by Anonymousreply 4705/11/2013

R29 eats piles of shit.

by Anonymousreply 4805/11/2013

Woody from Cheers.

by Anonymousreply 4905/11/2013

Lenny

by Anonymousreply 5005/11/2013

Ryan Lochte

by Anonymousreply 5105/11/2013

The eldest daughter of the Ty Burrell character on "Modern Family."

by Anonymousreply 5205/11/2013

"Phoebe from Friends"

Phoebe was the classic example of "different drummer"

by Anonymousreply 5305/11/2013

Phoebe had a mean streak in her.

by Anonymousreply 5405/11/2013

Phoebe was street smart - not dumb at all. Just different.

by Anonymousreply 5505/11/2013

bernice on designing women lol. uhm the mechanic on wings, thomas whoever who was in sideways

by Anonymousreply 5605/11/2013

Matthew on NewsRadio.

by Anonymousreply 5705/11/2013

[quote]The last few years she was on I guess the producers hated Suzanne Somers and they made the character painly stupid.

I thought she was only on for one season, but iMDB shows she was on in one capacity or another from 1977-1981. Jenilee Harrison joined the cast in 1980, so the 1980-81 season must been the one where Chrissy phoned it in. I must have been thinking of Farrah Fawcett on "Charlie's Angels."

by Anonymousreply 5805/11/2013

Potsie for not ditching that stupid gross nickname and staying with Warren and the biggest stupidest most uptigh prude idiot of all....STEVE URKEL!!!!YOU ARE A REPULSIVE GEEKY NERD!YOU ARE NOT LIKABLE!YOU ARE DAMN LUCKY A CUTE GIRL NAMED MYRA LIKES YOU!STOP BEING A DAMN UPTIGHT PRUDE!ITS A MIRACLE SOMEONE LIKES YOU AND WANTS TO PAIN YOU NAKED BUT YOU'RE TOO STUPID TO REALIZE THA TBECAUSE YOU'RE A STUCK-UP PRUDE!HOW LONG DO YOU THINK YOUR MARRAIGE TO THAT UOTIGHT CUNT LAURA WITH HER UPTIGHT PARENTS IS GONNA LAST!SHE'SWHIPPING HER BEAVER TO STEFAN!

by Anonymousreply 5905/11/2013

Beth (Bonnie Urseth) on WE'VE GOT IT MADE.

by Anonymousreply 6005/11/2013

Daryl and Daryl on NEWHART

Vanessa, Anthony's gf and Carlene on DESIGNING WOMEN

by Anonymousreply 6105/11/2013

isn't there a difference between dumb and nerds (urkel), and innocents (say charlotte fr. sex and the city)

by Anonymousreply 6205/11/2013

It's a lazy sitcom formula. It's very easy to write jokes around a stupid character.

by Anonymousreply 6305/11/2013

Angie from Gimme a Break

by Anonymousreply 6405/11/2013

Sam's best friend Bonnie on "Who's The Boss?" was dumb in later seasons (after she'd gotten older and filled out).

Katie from "Gimmie A Break" (the eldest daughter) didn't start off dumb, but seasons later when her hair was a little blonder and her figure was a little fuller, she became an airhead.

by Anonymousreply 6505/11/2013

Peter Brady was supposed to be the stupid one. Not Marsha.

Remember when he worked in that bike store. The old man just couldn't believe this stupid, slow kid.

by Anonymousreply 6605/11/2013

Hot, dumb, & shirtless is kool.

by Anonymousreply 6705/11/2013

well, going back to Maude and including Mary Tyler Moore, it was Rue McClanhan that always played the dumb/spacey character and Betty White that always played the bitch/slut.

by Anonymousreply 6805/11/2013

Speaking of Maude, I'm surprised that noone said Edith Bunker yet, although I would argue that Edith was far from dumb

by Anonymousreply 6905/11/2013

Edith wasn't the sharpest knife in the draw, and was stifled. She did have her moments.

by Anonymousreply 7005/11/2013

Speaking of 'stifled,' Vera on Alice.

by Anonymousreply 7105/11/2013

I generally don't like dumb characters, but I loved Loretta on Cheers. Of course only in small doses.

by Anonymousreply 7205/11/2013

r68, see r6

by Anonymousreply 7305/11/2013

Al Roker on the NBC sitcom "Today."

by Anonymousreply 7405/11/2013

Jessica Tate (Soap)

by Anonymousreply 7505/11/2013

Name a sitcom that didn't have at least one dumb or incompetent character.

by Anonymousreply 7605/11/2013

It wasn't a sitcom but she was THE dumb blonde on The Tonight Show. Carol Wayne as the Teatime movie girl.

In the same vein, the Landers sisters in whatever loser sitcom they were on. Ever.

by Anonymousreply 7705/11/2013

Betty White began her TV creer as ditzy in "Life With Elizabeth." Of course, she was far from ditzy and was a pioneer in TV - the first female producer of a TV series.

by Anonymousreply 7805/11/2013

R77 - Theresa Ganzel also played a dumb blonde in those skits.

by Anonymousreply 7905/11/2013

Ritchie on king of Queens.

by Anonymousreply 8005/11/2013

Penny on The Big Bang theory.

by Anonymousreply 8105/11/2013

Penny is not dumb.

by Anonymousreply 8205/11/2013

The king on Mr.Rogers' neighborhood.

by Anonymousreply 8305/11/2013

Barney Rubble on The Flintstones.

by Anonymousreply 8405/11/2013

R82, she isn't smart. Last episode she thought you could start a pacemaker with a potato.

by Anonymousreply 8505/11/2013

Val Toriello (The Nanny)

by Anonymousreply 8605/11/2013

Rush Limbaugh on the Rush Limbaugh show.

by Anonymousreply 8705/11/2013

those dumb characters are worse than the annoying neighbor ones!

by Anonymousreply 8805/11/2013

i agree penny isn't dumb.

by Anonymousreply 8905/12/2013

[quote]Edith wasn't the sharpest knife in the draw

Oh, dear.

by Anonymousreply 9005/12/2013

duh, mallory on family ties.

by Anonymousreply 9105/12/2013

My personal statement (after 30 years of running after and helping "friends" (moving, every fucking problem etc) and being blown off when I need help is a "Phoebe Buffay-ism"-

"Oh honey, I would help - but I really don't want to"

Their faces are just so much fun...

by Anonymousreply 9205/12/2013

bump

by Anonymousreply 9305/15/2013

Well, not to YOU R89.

by Anonymousreply 9405/17/2013

Bubble on Absolutely Fabulous

by Anonymousreply 9505/17/2013

Lovita Jenkins on the old "Steve Harvey Show." (And her relatives Duracell, Clinique, Camay, Bruschetta, and Kinko.)

by Anonymousreply 9605/17/2013

Self contained underwater breathing apparatus.

See, I'm not that dumb.

by Anonymousreply 9705/17/2013

The guy on that Suzanne Summers and Patrick Duffy show on ABC... you know, the one that played a cousin or whatever.

by Anonymousreply 9805/17/2013

Chris on Family Guy.

by Anonymousreply 9905/17/2013

Loretta on Cheers. Played by Casey Kasem's wife.

by Anonymousreply 10005/17/2013

How could we forget Max Gail's lovably dumb hunk Stan "Wojo" Wojciehowicz from "Barney Miiier"?
