Why Does Bill Maher Claim To Be A Libertarian?
|by Anonymous||reply 38||05/04/2013|
Does he still say that? I thought he dropped it and says he is a democrat now.
|by Anonymous||reply 1||04/30/2013|
That's new R1, please confirm. Maybe Ron Paul scared him out of it. The face of Libertarian.
|by Anonymous||reply 2||04/30/2013|
He doesn't. He did a New Rules on why he's abandoning the movement.
I don't think he's a democrat either. He just says he's a "sane person."
|by Anonymous||reply 3||04/30/2013|
Its hard to be a anything when there are so few choices and they all have so many qualifications.
|by Anonymous||reply 4||04/30/2013|
Who would choose to be a Democrat today? They're barely distinguishable from Republicans. And Libertarians can't even remain consistent with their own bullshit. Check out filibustering Rand Paul flipflopping on his own drone stand as soon as he's asked about it in the wake of the Boston bombings. There are a few principled patriots in DC - Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Ron Wyden, Jay Rockefeller. But the rest are just working for Wall Street or the warmongers. And Obama is the worst of the bunch, because he has the most power and just helps out the Wall Street criminals and wants to cut Social Security and Medicare to pay for more defense contractors.
|by Anonymous||reply 5||04/30/2013|
During the Bush (and even late Clinton) years, many disgruntled progressives started identifying as libertarian. I think this was due to the weak-kneed Democrats that were seen as not doing much of anything. I think this is changed considerably since then, and since the Rand Pauls of the world have hijacked libertarianism.
|by Anonymous||reply 6||04/30/2013|
R5, you're an idiot.
Anyone who says Democrats are "barely distinguishable from Republicans" is clearly blind or just plain stupid.

It's not a stretch to say Reps and Dems are very similar. As I'm not a real American, I can see that very clearly. They both get rewarded by lobbyists when they retire, it's them they work for, not the people. Congressional insider trading, etc... I don't understand why both these parties haven't been destroyed by now. In my home country, the biggest corruption scandal in years was a socialist leader who gave money on the side to a self-defense class for girls after a high rate of attack rapes in the city. And yet you all allow the obvious fraud politicians who don't work for the people, to continue.
Also, Obama doesn't care about anything but to please the establishment. TheYoungTurks on YouTube are more liberal than ANY news network, yet they are not afraid to critize him harshly now and then. Type in 'obama' in the searchfield on their channel and watch videos from all the way to 2008. Their always good at giving you the facts, and then the most TRULY liberal/progressive opinion in the entire media. They have also not been afraid to both praise and critize Ron and Rand Paul. At least the father has spoken out about a lot that liberals can agree on, wars, drones, government corruption and lobbying, etc. Which is more than you can say for the average blind Democrat supporter who doesn't even care.
|by Anonymous||reply 9||04/30/2013|
It's not a stretch to say Reps and Dems are very similar.
Yeah. It is.
Look at the votes... Democrats almost all in favor of a minimum wage increase or equal rights for women or gays, and Republicans almost all opposed. You can't draw sharper distinctions.
You don't know what the fuck you're talking about.
|by Anonymous||reply 10||04/30/2013|
And there are countless other examples where Democrats have had chances to push liberal/progressive goals yet have NOT done it. Obama has had chances where Republicans have been utterly crushed and he could have pushed for change, yet did NOT do it. He WANTS to do the grand bargain, he WANTS to cut SS etc. He has done so many things in order to try and not piss of Reps. Please watch The Young Turks. They are TRULY progressive, they have praised Obama a lot but also critized him a lot for being an establishment pleaser, and critized his followers for believing blindly that he is left-wing.
|by Anonymous||reply 11||04/30/2013|
Great post R5! ITA with everything you say. I only trust those very few Dems you mentioned. Obama is a total liar and fraud. I've grown to detest the very sight of him. He's worse than any of the GOP. At least they admit they are GOP.
The last straw was Obama signing the bill to keep the rich from god forbid waiting an extra 5 minutes to fly while leaving the poor elderly to starve and be denied treatment for cancer. What kills me the most is what choice do we have? Who would we vote for, Romney and Ryan. We desperately need a viable 3rd part and I know that is never going to happen.
|by Anonymous||reply 12||04/30/2013|
IA, the Young Turk always tells it like it is and he's not afraid to say what a piece of shit Obama is in so many ways.
At this point though there is nothing we can do to Obama. Obviously Obama has no conscience or ability to be shamed and he will never run for office again.
We have to go after the Dems in Congress and the Senate.
|by Anonymous||reply 13||04/30/2013|
Young Turk at R9/R13,stop shilling for your channel.We here only need those YouTube spammers that say ``Before you ignore me ,just give me a chance.I`m a 16 year old rapper/EDMproducer...``

Not young Turk paranoid R14, but definitely a fan of his politics.

Rand Paul and Paul Ryan aren't true Libertarians. Libertarian ideology suits their agenda sometimes so they claim it. But when it doesn't (gay rights, abortion, etc.) they drop it and don't even pretend to be logically consistent.

21. They show is led by a Turkish guy and the main co-host is Armenian so it's nothing to do with that. I'm just saying they're a great show for people who actually care about the truth and how liberal it really is. I thought DL was mainly liberals, so I thought people would like a show with true liberal opinions and not just another CNN and MSNBC who never dares to challenge politicians.
|by Anonymous||reply 22||04/30/2013|
However you feel about him, I highly recommend the HBO series he produces, VICE. Documentary film crews travel the world examining economic disparities and how they shape society and culture. It's very well done. I think it's on Friday nights.

The last show I saw they went to China to examine the one-child only law resulting in a surplus of millions of men, who vie for rare single women in ridiculous public skits like karaoke contests to "win" a date. The main attraction is money as a married male in China has to support both his and his wife's entire family.
Then they went to Madrid and Athens to interview participants of the riots taking place there over austerity measures.
Fun and educational.

R20...to censor an opinion you don't agree with? Wow, that's pretty evil.
|by Anonymous||reply 25||04/30/2013|
Who can anyone even think that Obama is a socialist?
|by Anonymous||reply 26||04/30/2013|
Bill's left leaning on social issues, but has some libertarian leanings.
|by Anonymous||reply 27||04/30/2013|
Probably his libertarianism means he read "Anarchy, State, and Utopia" thirty years ago.
|by Anonymous||reply 28||04/30/2013|
He absolutely stated that he liked many of the tenets of the Libertarians, but he never claimed to be one, and yes, Ron Paul was the last nil in the coffin for his interest in the Party.
For now, he's a somewhat disillusioned Democrat.
|by Anonymous||reply 29||04/30/2013|
Maher likes the usual Libertarian stance on drugs and sex, as do all intelligent people. He also *sometimes* likes their stance on international military interventions, as do all intelligent people.
The rest of the crazy as a shithouse rat ramblings we get from the Pauls, pere and fils, are either completely useless, obviously destructive or bold-faced lies.
And to whomever the functionally retarded specimen is who doesn't understand or recognize the difference between Republicans and Democrats, I direct your attention to every goddamned vote and filibuster in Congress for the last four and a half years. Further, please examine the batshit legislation Republicans are enacting in states where they have control. Note how similar draconian and inhumane legislation dies in states controlled by Democrats. Then please shut the fuck up. Moron.

The Repub vetersn on last night was smokin hot. Who is he?
|by Anonymous||reply 32||05/04/2013|
Look at the way he conducts his private life and the way an adult like Ron Paul does and tell me who's the real weirdo. I don't know why he ever called himself a libertarian. He's just your typical Hollywood degenerate who refuses to mature; Charlie Sheen with a college education.
|by Anonymous||reply 33||05/04/2013|
Look at the way he conducts his private life and the way an adult like Ron Paul does and tell me who's the real weirdo.
That's easy: Ron Paul. A fucked up tin-hat conspiracy theorist and complete nutcase who just happens (like a stopped clock) to be right on two or three issues (but of course for all the wrong reason).
I don't know why he ever called himself a libertarian.
I'm not entirely convinced he ever did... but if he did it was most likely a reference to a [italic]classical[/italic] libertarian, not these bizarre new counter-factual, Ayn Rand worshiping, racist-white-male based "libertarianism" that exists today.
|by Anonymous||reply 34||05/04/2013|
Whatever his political leanings, he remains aggressively ignorant on vaccines.
