Why are all scientists (people who are in academics) all so ugly for some reason?

Name one hot smart person. I bet you couldn't. Is it just a coincidence that every smart guy is so homely. It seems like a common trait. Attached is a photo of Kip Thorne, an American theoretical physicist.

by Anonymousreply 9302/23/2015

bump

by Anonymousreply 104/27/2013

Spencer Wells

by Anonymousreply 204/27/2013

OP -- for one thing, the guy is almost 73 years old! Secondly, he's average looking, not ugly!

by Anonymousreply 304/27/2013

Travis S. Taylor - aerospace engineer, optical scientist, and science fiction author; has authored more than 25 technical papers, 14 science fiction novels and two textbooks, and has appeared in multiple television documentaries

by Anonymousreply 404/27/2013

Scientists are not different than most people on Earth. Most of us are average with many bordering on homely. That said, by profession, academics would naturally be people more interested in their internal lives, so they wouldn't be all that interested in keeping up with current clothing, hair styles, skin care, etc.

by Anonymousreply 504/27/2013

[quote]Name one hot smart person. I bet you couldn't.

You lose the bet.

Bobak Ferdowsi, the hot Mohawk guy from the Mars Rover program.

by Anonymousreply 604/27/2013

Look at the forearms on Bobak!

by Anonymousreply 704/27/2013

Wasn't there a thread about how homely the women in academia are? Dr. Amy "Boom Boom" Bishop was mentioned as being one of them.

by Anonymousreply 804/27/2013

Neil deGrasse Tyson. One bad ass mofo. Would hit it in a nano-second.

by Anonymousreply 904/27/2013

Hot for teacher.

by Anonymousreply 1004/27/2013

The guy in OP's link could use a teeth whitening. Agree with R3.

by Anonymousreply 1104/27/2013

Particle physicist Dr. Brian Cox.

by Anonymousreply 1204/27/2013

There just not publicized, OP.

by Anonymousreply 1304/27/2013

Why are all stereotypes always invariably true for everyone?

by Anonymousreply 1404/27/2013

*They're*

by Anonymousreply 1504/27/2013

Danica McKellar

by Anonymousreply 1804/27/2013

]quote]It's really simple... good looking guys spend all their time getting laid (because they can), and ugly guys spend all their time studying (because they can't get laid).

Yes, "really simple" is an excellent descriptor for that theory.

by Anonymousreply 1904/27/2013

I'd hit Doc Cox so hard his particle beam would explode.

Hell yeah.

by Anonymousreply 2004/27/2013

Carl Sagan was cute.

by Anonymousreply 2104/27/2013

And Jane Goodall. She was lovely.

by Anonymousreply 2204/27/2013

Another vote for Prof. Brian Cox.

by Anonymousreply 2304/27/2013

Dr. Travis S. Taylor

by Anonymousreply 2404/28/2013

Dr. Travis

by Anonymousreply 2504/28/2013

by Anonymousreply 2604/28/2013

Rocket scientist Dave Johnson.

by Anonymousreply 2704/28/2013

ALL cuties

by Anonymousreply 2804/28/2013

He's long dead, but when he was alive ( and young) Nikola Tesla was very good-looking. And there is speculation that he was a gay. He would make time travel kind of worth it.

by Anonymousreply 2904/28/2013

So we've established OP is an asshole and was dead wrong.

by Anonymousreply 3004/28/2013

Tesla was mega hot! I think for some mental-illness issues, he was lifelong celibate. Horror of germs? He wouldn't shake hands with anyone, either. What a waste. Beautiful man. (and smarter than Edison and Westinghouse, who cheated him out of a fortune - when he was dying of cancer in his old age, Westinghouse finally helped him out financially, a little bit, in his guilt.)

by Anonymousreply 3104/28/2013

Oh, come on! Everybody knows Sharon Stone is a genius!

by Anonymousreply 3204/28/2013

Bobak is hot!

Brian cox is the most annoying cunt on TV.

by Anonymousreply 3304/28/2013

Travis Taylor writes military science fiction, a subgenre notorious for its ultra-conservatism (never a shade of grey, liberals destroy the world) and poor style.

by Anonymousreply 3404/28/2013

Ronan Farrow. Gorgeous, witty genius.

by Anonymousreply 3504/28/2013

Lise Meitner was beautiful. Marie Curie was ok. So was Niels Bohr, Enrico Fermi, eh, I think they probably look as good as anybody else, barring perhaps entertainment jerks but when you think of what airheads most of them are, who cares how attractive they might be.

by Anonymousreply 3604/28/2013

Isaac Newton was gorgeous. and to think he was a lifelong celibate :(

by Anonymousreply 3704/28/2013

Sorry - link didn't work. But if you google him when he was young - hubba hubba!

by Anonymousreply 3804/28/2013

Hank Green - host of SciShow, a youtube channel devoted to science news. He is hot in a nerdy kind of way.

by Anonymousreply 3904/29/2013

Major Tim Peakes, Britain's first official astronaut (many better pics of this cute ginger on google)

by Anonymousreply 4005/25/2013

I used to be a model when I was a teenager (20 years ago). Did catalog work with Helena Christensen before she got famous. She wisely chose to continue modelling (she's not too bright academically). My parents decided I should do academia. I have several other modelling colleagues who dropped modelling for a career in science and research. One is now an associate professor at Berkeley (and a lesbian). Another is taking some time out to find himself (see link). A third has become an associate professor in protein chemistry at the uni of Copenhagen. A fourth did his PhD in Epidemiology at Cambridge uni and is now working for a pharmaceutical company in Basel while his wife, who was also a model, earned her PhD in mathematics at Cambridge and now works for a bank in Geneva.

True we were not in the same league as Cindy C et al. But we were non the less signed by big model agencies like Elite models.

by Anonymousreply 4102/22/2015

Danish Astronaut.

by Anonymousreply 4202/22/2015

R41 wins. That guy you linked is definitely the hottest so far.

by Anonymousreply 4302/22/2015

OP sounds so smart.

by Anonymousreply 4402/22/2015

I taught high school for many years ago so trust me when I say that beauty and brains generally go hand and hand.

by Anonymousreply 4502/22/2015

Some of the astronauts were hotties. I consider them to be scientists or at least at that level of intelligence.

by Anonymousreply 4602/22/2015

r43 Yep, he's hot but like most who used to live by their looks he plays it down a lot in private. I forgot to mention that he is a Biochemist and a Pharmaceutical chemist and a very cool hipster dude who also owns a cool café in a very hipster part of Cph.

Where I'm from being a scientist is considered a cool thing to be.

by Anonymousreply 4702/22/2015

Professor Brian Cox when he was keyboard player in D:Ream.

by Anonymousreply 4802/22/2015

Just think what the world would be like if everyone spent as much time on the sciences as they did following the Kartrashians; if young scientists achieved as much fame as Bieber or One Direction; or if we spent as much time developing scientists as we did developing athletes.

There was a show called Sliders from years ago where they moved through alternate realities. In one reality, the scientists were the superstars with groupies.

by Anonymousreply 4902/22/2015

Hedy Lamar

Yuri Gagarin

by Anonymousreply 5002/22/2015

Scientists used to be free to be trolls, but never science management. But with all the Asians and Indians piling in, even that has changed.

A lot of "fitting in" for whites and other Americans has much to do with appearance. With computers, many managers hire mostly to decorate their office bays.

Also, this comes from groups who were once relegated to Hollywood, but now are smearing their values (or lack thereof) all over the rest of us.

by Anonymousreply 5102/22/2015

Bill Nye is hot.

by Anonymousreply 5202/22/2015

I have a neighbor, female and very attractive, who is a rocket scientist at NASA. She's also a bellydancer and her live-in boyfriend is a musician with the requisite long hair and rocker look.

I think she told me that she was one of the people responsible for programming or operating the robot arm on the shuttle missions when they were still going up.

by Anonymousreply 5302/22/2015

r49, I'd like to live in a world where scientists are celebrated like superstars and the Kartrashians, Biebers et al. are treated for what they are - trash.

Recently, I was watching a documentary about great minds who changed our world or influenced our way of thinking. Once upon a time philosophers like Sartre and Beauvoir, writers like Hemingway and Wilde, scientists like Bohr and Einstein were considered celebrities. What happened to our world?

by Anonymousreply 5402/22/2015

Boston University has a MUCH hotter student population than Harvard. Tufts > MIT (obviously).

Would you rather go to Arizona State or Michigan State or Northwestern... really...

by Anonymousreply 5502/22/2015

I wouldn't want to be a celebrity. But I would definitely like it if our research could be funded a fraction of what actors are getting paid for doing movies. We could hire more researchers (there are a lot of unemployed researchers due to lack of funding), buy more materials and equipment's and most importantly we could focus more on our work rather than spending time writing funding applications.

by Anonymousreply 5602/22/2015

I think movies will eventually do away with live actors and use CGI. Some of the video games I've seen have characters that look practically real and they will only improve that technology.

by Anonymousreply 5702/22/2015

[quote]Would you rather go to Arizona State or Michigan State or Northwestern... really...

Northwestern, as it is a much better university. You are an idiot if you chose college based off hot guys dear.

by Anonymousreply 5802/22/2015

For the lesbians out there...

Check out Norwegian scientist Sunniva Rose on her Facebook page. A cool Nordic blond warrior lady.

by Anonymousreply 5902/22/2015

LMAO I actually went to Northwestern...and graduated from there. Aside from it being a fug nerd school, NU did not convey any advantages for me whatsoever beyond my first job that I got through one of their internship programs (which I still had to apply to within NU & was incredibly hard to get in). After that, I was on my own - nobody has cared that I went to NU ever since...even through today. It's meaningless.

From a "learning" perspective, I wouldn't recommend that place to anyone. The quarter system makes it extremely difficult to actually learn anything, the weather is horrible (killing social lives), 75% of the campus is depressed (~30-40% on psychiatric meds), the competition is ridiculous, and it's overpriced beyond belief. You can read US News rankings all day long (like I did at 17) but had I actually talked to a student, I'd have known I was about to make a huge mistake. I was miserable there for 4 years (from all of the above - not just fugly guys). E.g, and I had to drop out of pre-med because of the psychotic Asians who would sabotage my lab experiments so they would get higher grades...and they would put lab classes at 8 AM on the North side of the campus (or in tech), when I lived on the South (which is a long ass walk in 0 degree weather at 8 AM)...but I lived on the South because that's where the other WCAS classes were that I had to take. If I went to Arizona State, I would have at least finished pre med...and had more fun...no question.

If you want to talk about looks: Everyone was fug (the guys, not really the girls - for some reason the gay guys were more fug than anyone). I would have been single for 4 years if not from a guy in Chicago who used to drive to Evanston to fuck me...thank god for him.

Now let me know if you want to educate me on how great NU is any further.

by Anonymousreply 6002/22/2015

r60, you sound silly. On a campus with thousands of people you are going to get a mixture of people - some pretty, some ugly. Making generalizations is dumb.

by Anonymousreply 6102/22/2015

Where did you go to school R61? Have you visited other campuses aside from there? There are reasons that generalizations exist.

by Anonymousreply 6202/22/2015

r62, there is no such thing as a group of thousands of people with no diversity.

And there are plenty of celeb grads of Northwestern who are attractive, which kind of disproves your generalizing...

Seriously, if you went to a college with thousands of people then you didn't know EVERYONE....

by Anonymousreply 6302/22/2015

I am saying the average attractiveness level at NU is lower than a school like Michigan State or Arizona. You are saying everything has variation. Yes, everything does have variation - but everything also has an average.

Also, there's a difference between a general trend and an outlier. The few celeb grads from the theater program are outliers...and usually women, btw. Like I said, the women at NU were more attractive than the men.

I asked you where you went to school & if you've visited other campuses for a reason...because if you have, then you'd notice differences.

However, if you are suggesting that the average attractiveness of students at Michigan state is equivalent to those at Northwestern...then I disagree & I can't imagine anyone who has actually been on those campuses would disagree with me. Likewise, I'd say the same for MIT or U of Chicago vs. U of Illinois or Madison. Yes, there is individual variation within a population of people - but there's also an average.

by Anonymousreply 6402/22/2015

Because they don't put as much effort into their appearance. The difference between ugly people and hot people is not as great as people think. It comes down to styling and how well a person takes care of themselves.

Put a theoretical scientist on a diet, stick them in the gym, give them the best skincare routine, maybe some makeup (definitely if they're a woman) and trendy fashion clothes, and they'll look no worse than a "hot guy" or "hot girl". Think of all the makeover/modelling shows that take average people and make them fit society's definition of hot.

There are few people on this planet that are NATURALLY handsome or beautiful. Most people are average and need to work at being above average.

by Anonymousreply 6502/22/2015

What R65 said. I have a relative in Academia. Long gray un-styled hair, no make up, no pedi/mani's ever. Never moisturized. Baggy, long skirts, ugly sandals, etc. Looked like a hippie who never grew up. Very smart but looked down on make up and primping as vain and frivolous and she was too mentally elevated to concern herself with that and people should respect her mind not her looks, blah, blah.

I guess she's hard core feminist.

by Anonymousreply 6602/22/2015

Most "hot" actors are made up by their magical team of stylists, hair dressers, and make up artists. I've met people irl who look much better than actors we are manipulated to believe are "hot".

by Anonymousreply 7502/22/2015

I wonder if OP is a freeper because if you ever visit political boards they are always saying how ugly the liberal women are and all the goodlooking women are conservative (bwhahaha).

by Anonymousreply 7602/22/2015

by Anonymousreply 8302/22/2015

This philosophy professor is gorgeous.

by Anonymousreply 8402/22/2015

This thread is idiotic. They are academics, not actors and other type of celebrities.

They are successful for their mind, for actually contributing to society, not putting all their effort into their appearance.

It's sad that it concerns you that these people aren't pretty enough for you, real life is not a hollywood movie where everyone is gorgeous.

by Anonymousreply 8502/22/2015

Two of the most brilliant scientific minds the world has ever known were also drop dead gorgeous.

Nikola Tesla

Hedy Lamarr

by Anonymousreply 8602/22/2015

Sorry, I don't know his name.

There is a queer scientist at MIT who gets airtime on the history channel. I've googled him and he's married to a woman. He walks in the woods and talks to himself, unless that was for TV dramatic purposes. He has a weird way of speaking. Almost a lisp, but not one.

He does something with astrophysics. Planetary something. I think he's a theorist. He's getting a little old, but still attractive. I bet he was sizzling as a youngster.

by Anonymousreply 8702/22/2015

On average I have always found the highly educated to be very attractive people. Even the plain janes are quite tantalizing if only for their brain. None have ever disappointed me in the sack. As one would expect, they are fast learners when need be.

by Anonymousreply 8802/22/2015

None of the guys mentioned as "hot," certainly not Brian Cox. I watched the show for the longest time, studying and studying his overwhelming number of vanity shots. Not hot.

ooo-ooo I just thought of someone,. Remember Brendon Villegas from Big Brother who was a PhD candidate in biomedical physics at UCLA?

by Anonymousreply 8902/22/2015

They are hero's. They actually make a substantial difference. Without them we'd still be living in the stone ages.

by Anonymousreply 9002/22/2015

He's not that ugly.

by Anonymousreply 9102/22/2015

They're not.

What do you do for a living, OP?

I bet you weren't smart enough to study science and to this day still don't understand basic science.

by Anonymousreply 9202/23/2015
