The Place Beyond the Pines

What does DL think?

I wanted to love it. And I did. Until the third act.

Same here- the first act was definitely the strongest. I didn't care about the sons. Loved Ray Liotta and the cinematography, though.

Right, R1? If had ended with Cooper manipulating his way into a DA job, it would have been perfect. The third act with its sins of the father motif just didn't work. Too forced for a movie that up until then was so wonderfully spare. And I thought the "switch" and the midpoint was so shocking and wonderful.

I do give him tons of props for daring to go big.

Yeah, that third act was a bit muddled. Didn't particularly care for either son. Ryan Gosling's portrayal was so good that it haunted the rest of the movie.

The sons gave awesome performances.

Dane Dehaan is amazing...and cute

It sounds like the title of a film about the Fire Island Meat Rack.

Emory Cohen is great too. His accent is hot.

I liked it but didn't love it. I admire the fact that he was trying to do some kind of American epic -- The Departed meets Giant -- but the story just wasn't strong enough, particularly by the third act, which lacked the suspense that heightened the first two acts.

Forget that movie, I want to see Only God Forgives! Check out Kristen Scott Thomas in the trailer

What OP said - I wanted to love it and did.

Perfect description.

Not nearly as good as Blue Valentine.
