Were you there? Were you part of the chain?
Hands Across America

The line went through the mall in downtown Long Beach, CA so I went there to keep cool.

Right there part of the chain in PA just over the river from Trenton, NJ.
Sad, eh? But as a kid who was left out of everything, it was a great opportunity because this was a situation in which they needed every body they could find to make it work. For once, they actually wanted me to participate! What a concept.

I was 12 and that's when I realized how many dumb asses there were across america.
It was such a fail compared to Live Aid
|by Anonymous||reply 4||04/26/2013|
No, I'm not fucking old.

If they tried to do this now everyone would have to be provided with hand sanitizer.
|by Anonymous||reply 7||04/26/2013|
I was up on Mulholland Drive with a large group of B to C list celebrities. Was very surreal. Then we all went home.
|by Anonymous||reply 8||04/26/2013|
Was near scott baio in philly.
|by Anonymous||reply 9||04/26/2013|
I had forgotten all about Hands Across America. So this thread gave me a chuckle! Seems quaint today. Now, we could never hold a similar event w/o bomb searches , securiy, etc.
Alas, I did not participate-

I remember lining up in the hallway of my elementary school in Southwest Missouri. I thought it was a stupid idea.
|by Anonymous||reply 11||04/26/2013|
I didn't participate but how could I ever forget the day that hunger and homelessness were eradicated in America simply by holding hands?
|by Anonymous||reply 12||04/26/2013|
Did anybody think to play a game of telephone or pass a note?
|by Anonymous||reply 13||04/26/2013|
"I was up on Mulholland Drive with a large group of B to C list celebrities."
Name some names!
|by Anonymous||reply 14||04/26/2013|
I just realized that I remember all of the words to the song "Hands Across America."
|by Anonymous||reply 15||04/26/2013|
I was sucking cock in a daisy-chain across america
|by Anonymous||reply 16||04/26/2013|
The only way you would know if it was a complete circuit is if you put some electricity into the person on one coast and tested to see if it could be detected in the last person on the other end 3000 miles away.
Did they do that test?
Well, then it was hardly "Hands Across America," now was it?
|by Anonymous||reply 17||04/26/2013|
No and no. Nice idea in theory, retarded in execution.
|by Anonymous||reply 18||04/26/2013|
Did they actually form a complete chain, coast to coast, or were there some gaps along the way?
|by Anonymous||reply 19||04/26/2013|
|by Anonymous||reply 20||04/26/2013|
If I remember correctly, r19, they had difficulty in the middle of the country where there are so few people. It was a very broken line.
Kind of a no-brainer that it would be difficult in the middle of the country where there are so few people (and homelessness isn't a huge social problem).

H did they hanle places like the Grand Canyon?
Did people just hang off the sides to the bottom or were the others able to pull tight enough as to suspend them up in the air?
|by Anonymous||reply 22||04/26/2013|
They may have been able to avoid the Grand Canyon. They avoided New England altogether and it was just a line.
|by Anonymous||reply 23||04/26/2013|
7 million people participated.
|by Anonymous||reply 24||04/26/2013|
Technically it was the largest gathering of Americans for a single reason in history.
|by Anonymous||reply 25||04/26/2013|
I'm glad to see Datalounge was represented.
|by Anonymous||reply 26||04/26/2013|
LMAO @ R22
|by Anonymous||reply 27||04/26/2013|
I'm waiting for the 'dick-to-ass' chain across America. THAT I will participate in!
|by Anonymous||reply 28||04/26/2013|
Why were there pics of people doing it on the Golden Gate Bridge? The route didn't even go up through San Francisco.
|by Anonymous||reply 29||04/27/2013|
I don't get your point about DL from the video R26.
And yes, LOL, R22!

No, but I was at the filming of the "We Are the World" music video. My husband was one of the featured vocalists. I was merely an observer.
|by Anonymous||reply 31||04/27/2013|
I'm pretty sure I slept through it. I used to party a lot back then.

|by Anonymous||reply 33||06/08/2013|
Wasn't it a very hot day in most of the country?
|by Anonymous||reply 34||06/08/2013|
Someone should try this again. Im sure those people are still hungry or did we cure hunger? Seems like no ones cares now. Must have been an 80s thing.
|by Anonymous||reply 35||06/26/2013|
I didn't realize it was something to do with hunger. There was no money needed to participate.
|by Anonymous||reply 36||06/26/2013|
Aw, R3. That makes me heart smile. A close friend had a hard time as a kid and the stories he tells me break me heart, so I'm glad you had some moments of happiness.
