Margaux Hemingway

Any elder gays remember what a big deal she was in the 70s/early 80s?

Anyone have any stories from that era?

by Anonymousreply 3704/29/2015

I remember her sister Mariel being much more famous.

by Anonymousreply 104/24/2013

Famous model. She was everywhere. Then she made her movie debut in LIPSTICK a revenge movie aboout a model who is the victim of a brutal rape. Margaux was crucified by the critics and the public stayed away from the movie. Her sister had a much better career.

Margaux Hemingway---A failed marriage. Drugs and booze, weight gain.... the usual downward spiral. Killed herself.

by Anonymousreply 204/24/2013

I could never understand a word she said.

Very poor diction.

by Anonymousreply 304/24/2013

Yes, I remember Margaux. She was a big supermodel back in the day, and the first to be awarded a million dollar contract. LIPSTICK was supposed to launch her movie career, but, as R2 mentioned, the critics were merciless. Ironically, she was the one who suggested to producers Dino De Laurentiis and Freddie Fields that they cast her little sister Mariel as her character's little sister, and Mariel ended up getting all the praise and the Golden Globe nomination. Mariel then got cast in Woody Allen's MANHATTAN, nabbing an Oscar and BAFTA nomination for her performance. Mariel's film successes, against the backdrop of Margaux's tanking career, depression, and drug and alcohol abuse, put a strain on the sisters' relationship.

by Anonymousreply 404/24/2013

Margaux alsho had an unushual lishp.

by Anonymousreply 504/24/2013

Actually Lauren Hutton was the first model to get a million dollar contract

by Anonymousreply 604/24/2013

I remember her on 7up ads with Tommy Shmushers. Crishp and Cwean wif no caffeine. My brother and I would do the whole commercial with her bizarre speech impediment.

by Anonymousreply 704/24/2013

I saw LIPSTICK in a theater.

I don't remember anything about it except for 1) it was lousy, and 2) the advertising tag line:

LIPSTICK: IT ISN'T ALWAYS AN INVITATION TO A KISS.

by Anonymousreply 804/24/2013

I remember her when she was modeling. She had an unusual look, she didn't look like every other woman who was modeling then, to me they kind of all looked like clones.

After years of being told I was beautiful, but in a non-traditional way, I loved that a non-traditionally pretty woman was a top model. It changed the way I felt about myself, and gave me some self confidence about my looks that I had been severly lacking all my life, which to me was a really big deal.

I was saddened to hear about her suicide, but after I read about her family history of mental illness it made more sense. Too bad she couldn't/wouldn't stay on her meds.

I can not believe anyone in Lipstick was nominated for anything. That was an awful movie

by Anonymousreply 1004/24/2013

She was a question on Jeapardy tonight.

by Anonymousreply 1104/24/2013

R6, I don't think so. Hutton was the first to land a major cosmetics contract (Revlon) at $250,000 annually. That, plus her other endorsement deals and countless modeling assigments pushed her past the million dollar mark in a few short years. Hemingway, on the other hand, landed an unprecedented million-dollar contract (Fabergé) in one shot.

by Anonymousreply 1204/24/2013

Margaux was also in the "Killer Fish" movie with Gary Collins, Marisa Berenson, Karen Black, and Lee Majors. The movie is so dated now. It came out in 1979 at the tail end of the disco era.

by Anonymousreply 1304/25/2013

How many of us got fingerbanged while watching "Lipstick"? Be honest.

by Anonymousreply 1404/25/2013

The 2nd day I moved to LA I went to the big opening of The Pace Gallery in Beverly Hills. My boyfriend at the time was a dealer there.

Margaux was there and she chatted with me briefly when we were both getting a drink at the bar. She was very nice. But seemed a little gassed out. I wrote it off as So-Cal flakiness.

The rest of the night I watched her from a distance. She kinda floated around, talking to random people - but was definitely alone. I ended up feeling bad for her. She seemed lost and without many friends. I don't know why I concluded this - didn't know the woman at all - but you could just tell with her for some reason.

Poor thing.

by Anonymousreply 1504/25/2013

Her name is normally pronounced "Margo" but it is pronounced "Margocks" when it is used in limericks.

by Anonymousreply 1604/25/2013

Left behind a real mess -- when her body was found, she'd been dead five days, there was no AC in her apartment, and the heat was in the 90s.

by Anonymousreply 1704/25/2013

Mariel Hemingway used to be such a control freak that every minute of her life was regulated. Play with her daughters was limited to 15 minutes before she moved on to the next task: 30 minutes’ meditation or 20 minutes preparing meals, which were carefully weighed and assessed for fat content.

Her grandfather Ernest Hemingway may be regarded as one of the seminal writers of the 20th century, but his legend also lives on through his image as an inveterate drinker.

Her father Jack was Ernest’s only son from his marriage to Hadley Richardson, the first of his four wives. He had a strange relationship with his father.

Mariel blames her father’s drinking on the most startling of the revelations contained in her documentary. In it, she says she believes her father sexually molested her two sisters.

She thinks she was only saved from his clutches because from the age of 11, when her mother contracted cancer, she slept with Byra until she left home at 17. But she says her knowledge of it put her off sex for years.

‘That is the hardest part of this film for me to talk about,’ she sighs when I ask her about her shocking allegation. ‘I loved my dad and he was a wonderful man. He was so kind and I learned a lot from him. He wasn’t a monster.

‘But he did drink too much, especially when I was very young, and I think things happened. I don’t think it was regular and it is something I have more of a visceral memory of rather than a visual one. I think if he was alive now he probably wouldn’t even remember it.

‘I am not condoning it or making excuses for it. But things happen in families and there is unspoken stuff. That doesn’t make it right but it also doesn’t make a person evil, and my dad wasn’t evil.’

by Anonymousreply 1802/10/2014

She had a really, really raspy voice:

by Anonymousreply 1902/10/2014

He's not evil? Are both of her sisters dead or just the one? Wow.

by Anonymousreply 2002/10/2014

Saw her at 54 in the 70s drunk drunk drunk with a nipple slip. There is a famous pix of that from back in the day.

She had fun. We all did. Then the plague hit and the music stopped.

by Anonymousreply 2102/10/2014

According to Wikipedia she was the first model to receive a million dollar contract as someone mentioned earlier. I saw her in the flesh in Ketchum, 6 feet tall and eyebrows with a life of their own. Her voice reminded me of Carol Channing's. I met her sister Mariel when she was young, she had a baby voice and obviously worked with a vocal coach do get rid of it. The family has a history of suicides. Margaux could be quite stunning in photos.

by Anonymousreply 2202/10/2014

Googling images of Margaux I found that Mariel's daughter Dree is getting fucked and giving blowjobs on screen in some art porn movie as well as showing her pussy off in full nude photo shoots. Those Hemingways are a strange family.

by Anonymousreply 2302/11/2014

Margaux also made the cover of Time in 1975. She was the forerunner of the glamazons of the 80s.

Thick eyebrows, 6 ft tall, strong bone structure. A beautiful woman.

by Anonymousreply 2402/11/2014

I thought her sister Mariel had the potential to be a very good actress. She was the best thing in Manhattan: charming and natural. You could see why Woody Allen's character was in love with her -- and (a much more difficult feat) why her character was in love with him.

by Anonymousreply 2502/11/2014

I can not believe anyone in Lipstick was nominated for anything. That was an awful movie.

Except for me.

by Anonymousreply 2604/29/2015

Lipstick was a career killer for Chris Sarandon after the great role he had in Dog Day Afternoon. Maybe he chose to play a rapist after Leon to prove he wasn't that character.

by Anonymousreply 2704/29/2015

She said her height was 5'12"

by Anonymousreply 2804/29/2015

The very definition of a hot mess.

by Anonymousreply 2904/29/2015

What makeup line did she do ads for? Or was it some kind of perfume? I remember a truly awful print ad where a guy is biting her face! The ad was implying that if you used this perfume or makeup your guy would be so turned on he'd want to eat you all up, yum. In the photo she looks very annoyed, like she's thinking "this shit is ridiculous." And it was.

by Anonymousreply 3004/29/2015

Mariel said in her book that Margot (later changed to Margaux) couldn't act. She'd help her with her lines and said Margaux was completely self-conscious and would speak her lines in an awkward, wooden way. Even as a kid, Mariel knew she could act circles around her sister. And Margaux knew it too. One night, after Manhattan, drunk, Margaux crept into Mariel's room, put her hands around her neck, screaming that she was supposed to be the star.

Anybody remember Margaux's tacky hamburger boyfriend Earl Wetson? (On the right in the shot with Halston.)

by Anonymousreply 3104/29/2015

Yes, Dree Hemingway was in STARLET, about a porn star who befriends an elderly lady. However, that was not her in those graphic scenes; it was a body double.

Mariel was not nominated for a GG for LIPSTICK.

The supporting actress nominees that year were: Katharine Ross (VOYAGE OF THE DAMNED), Lee Grant (VOYAGE OF THE DAMNED), Marthe Keller (MARATHON MAN), Piper Laurie (CARRIE), Bernadette Peters (SILENT MOVIE), Shelley Winters (NEXT STOP, GREENWICH VILLAGE).

by Anonymousreply 3304/29/2015

"Lipstick" sounds dreadful from the synopsis on Wikipedia. Also, Chris Sarandon was an odd choice as a rapist (as was David Duke on "All in the Family") as I found him to be quite sexy when he was young. It's all kinda messed up.

by Anonymousreply 3404/29/2015

I think they meant Mariel was nominated for Manhattan.

by Anonymousreply 3504/29/2015

R34 you think attractive men don't rape people?

by Anonymousreply 3604/29/2015

[quote]I think they meant Mariel was nominated for Manhattan.

She wasn't GG-nominated for MANHATTAN, either. The nominees that year were: Meryl Streep (KRAMER VS. KRAMER), Jane Alexander (KRAMER VS. KRAMER), Kathleen Bellter (PROMISES IN THE DARK), Candice Bergen (STARTING OVER), Valerie Harper (CHAPTER TWO).
