Anyone who wants to see what a truly free market would look like should study the America and the UK of the Nineteenth Century: child labor, black lung, robber barons, the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, hundreds of thousands of dead Chinese railroad workers, the Grant Administration's many scandals, etc... This list could go on and on... Regulation is vital to the PROTECTION of the free market. Without regulation, the free market descends into Darwinian anarchy and becomes one big boom and bust until it ends in depression. ...more
Idiots who babble on against regulation and the magic of the "Free Market"...

But, but, but....corporations will always do the right thing, they are people too!
|by Anonymous||reply 1||04/24/2013|
They are not idiots, they know damn well what they are doing.
It is the masses who continue to believe this nonsense, who are the idiots.

Look at the funeral of Margaret Thatcher, the great Free Market advocate who started the UK on the road to privatization and the end of the welfare state. Her funeral cost the equivalent of $15 million dollars, all on the public tab, a substantial portion of which was security to help the celebrity mourners feel safe from all the people who showed up to sing "Ding, Dong, the Witch is Dead" and turn their backs on the coffin.

Perhaps, R2. But I still think they're idiots because the can never survive in the long term. Either they get their comeuppance, or the system collapses and they lose it all anyway.

"Free Market" meaning the Corporations are free to do whatever they want to the people.
The word "free" is being radically abused in this term.

Remember how these tools demonized John Kenneth Galbraith when he said the consumer didn't have the same power to set prices as corporations.

Just before the oil shocks proved him absolutely right.
|by Anonymous||reply 8||04/28/2013|
Sadly his son is a sellout who thinks China's flooding our market under aggressively undervalued currency is good for us.
|by Anonymous||reply 9||04/28/2013|
Governments always do the right thing? You are trading one "evil" for another, more sinister, one.
|by Anonymous||reply 10||04/28/2013|
No, R10. The government is "we the people" and has no profit motive to screw us over... unlike corporate plutocracy. Government is the only thing standing between us and corporate fascism.
|by Anonymous||reply 11||04/28/2013|
R11. So, we have had a choice in wars, assassinations, internment camps, and all other government atrocities? Government and religion are the most corrupt organizations.
|by Anonymous||reply 12||04/28/2013|
R12, right behind for-profit corporations (including for-profit health-care, for-profit prisons, etc). The main problem with what you've cited is the for-profit military industrial complex. This is not a necessary outgrowth of government.
You seem to be confused about what government is, actually. It's not difficult to understand why, given how our government has been so co-opted by right-wing corporatists and bought by plutocrats, but hey, you should at least understand the how and the why of its necessary existence.

And the left has never forced a hand? Obama has kept Guantanamo open, remained in Afghanistan, taken drone warfare to a new level, appointed numerous czars, and shoved obamacare down our throat by threatening those up for reelection. Government is fucking vile and should be marginalized.
|by Anonymous||reply 14||04/28/2013|
R14, Obama hasn't been allowed to close Guantanamo. Huge difference. Obama is withdrawing from Afghanistan as we speak.
The "appointed numerous czars" is just bullshit FOX News type spin. Seriously, are you fucking kidding me? You don't even grasp how our government works do you? EVERY president appoints people to take charge of certain tasks. No one man can do it all. And Obama has faced more, and more serious challenges than most.
And "shoved obamacare down our throats"?? More ignorant, misinformed idiocy. It passed congress, is supported by a majority of Americans, and is constitutional, and is FAR BETTER THAN WHAT WE HAD. You don't know what the fuck you're talking about. You're just parroting/regurgitating talking points you don't even understand you ignorant ass.
You are a moron. YOU should be marginalized. YOU are what is wrong with this country.
|by Anonymous||reply 15||04/28/2013|
R14 is one of those "idiots" mentioned in the OP. Clearly.
|by Anonymous||reply 16||04/28/2013|
R15. You seem to be the parrot to me. Different views. I'm not sure you grasp government either. The right allows a much more critical thinking approach instead of the blind devotion to dear leader the democrats require. So, so sad.
Please explain how Obama, the commander in chief, couldn't make a change on Guantanamo? Was Eric holder in his way??
|by Anonymous||reply 17||04/28/2013|
Case in point
|by Anonymous||reply 18||04/28/2013|
R14 is coming down from her weekend vodka/meth binge.
|by Anonymous||reply 19||04/28/2013|
R19. Go wipe your mom's ass.
|by Anonymous||reply 20||04/28/2013|
Let's say hypothetically that Obama was a total sellout tool of Wall Street. Does that mean liberalism is as bad or worse as conservatism, and government as evil as corporations, only more so because they have guns? No, obviously not. We can get rid of Obama. We have no power over a corporate CEO except what we give Obama. Meanwhile, conservatism, libertarianism, nineteenth century liberalism: all proven economic disasters. The eocnomy needs government, it needs regulation, and it needs income redistribution and efforts to make the game more fair.

R17, that is the EXACT OPPOSITE of the truth. The left is all about independent and critical thinking. The right is all about lock-step falling in line behind dear leader... the Texas GOP even went so far as to make it a party platform plank to oppose the teaching of critical thinking skills.
You're either a troll, or you're completely loonie.
