Why do People Pronounce Asperger's With Hard G?

It's supposed to be pronounced with a soft "g," like "scourge," "spurge," and "purge."

by Anonymousreply 1303/16/2015

Perhaps for the same reason that the condition is falsely attributed to people that don't have by those who are not qualified to diagnose it?

by Anonymousreply 104/23/2013

It rhymes with Jean Nate.

by Anonymousreply 204/23/2013

it's not even considered a legit diagnosis anymore, is it? the new terminology just identifies people as being on the high-functioning end of the autism spectrum.

Hans Asperger was Austrian. His name would have been pronounced with a hard g.

This is how it is usually pronounced in the US.

In the UK the soft g is more common.

I'm not sure where you came across the information that a soft g is the one true authoritative way to pronounce it.

I'm going to guess the OP doesn't see the irony of his post.

by Anonymousreply 504/23/2013

No one cares.

by Anonymousreply 604/23/2013

People pronounce it with a hard g so they can say "Ass burgers."

by Anonymousreply 704/23/2013

Wouldn't it be pronounced "Ahs-pair-gers" in German?

by Anonymousreply 804/23/2013

It's a fake condition. Pronounce it any way you like.

by Anonymousreply 904/23/2013

For the same reason some people prounounce "GIF" with a hard-G, like "Gift" without the "t"... they just don't know any better.

The g in Aspergers is hard, as Hans Asperger who gave his name to this condition was Austrian. Austrians speak German, a g is German is hard, therefore it should always be hard when saying Aspergers. Any other pronunciation is wrong, no matter how many people say it.

They say "Aspergers" but they are thinking "Asparagus." They believe you sufferers are all veggies who make our piss taste bad!

by Anonymousreply 1203/16/2015

I pronounce it with a hard ASS
