Barbra Streisand Is Taking Your Questions
By STEPHANIE GOODMAN Barbra Streisand made a splash in New York last year when she sang in two sold-out shows at the Barclays Center. Now Ms. Streisand’s film work will be in the spotlight of her hometown: on Monday she is to receive the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s annual Chaplin Award for lifetime achievement.
In advance of the ceremony (which will feature former President Bill Clinton, who is presenting the honor), Ms. Streisand has agreed to answer select questions from readers of The New York Times.
The society singled out her role as the moving force behind “Yentl,” the first film to credit a woman as director, producer, writer and star. Ask Ms. Streisand about “Yentl” or anything else, from her Oscar-winning efforts (she won best actress for “Funny Girl” and best original song for “Evergreen”) to her recent collaboration with Seth Rogen.
Post your questions in the comments section (by Wednesday afternoon) and check back on Monday for Ms. Streisand’s answers.

Should we submit an official Datalounge question? They wouldn't dare ignore us.
|by Anonymous||reply 1||04/16/2013|
Q: Miss Streisand, were you 25, or just 20, years too old to play Yentl?
|by Anonymous||reply 2||04/16/2013|
Q. Is it true you once shoved frail and elderly screen legend Lillian Gish through a plate glass window at your Malibu compound just to watch her bleed?
|by Anonymous||reply 3||04/16/2013|
Why are you so damn ugly?
|by Anonymous||reply 4||04/16/2013|
What's your favorite Madonna song?
|by Anonymous||reply 5||04/16/2013|
Does it bother you that your career means so little to people under 30?
|by Anonymous||reply 6||04/16/2013|
Could someone please start a thread to discuss the death of Barbra super fan Allison Waldman? She wrote The Barbra Streisand Scrapbook and some other Babra related things. Barbra even posted a note of sympathy on her own website!
What no one seems to remember, however, is the big episode from several years ago when she was busted for selling bootleg Barbra stuff. She also routinely begged for donations on Barbra fan sites to help pay her medical bills.
It is sad that cancer took her life but judging from the online fan reaction you'd think Barbra herself had passed on.
I want the dirt on the bootleg bust. And to discuss people who try to make a living through professional fandom.
|by Anonymous||reply 7||04/16/2013|
I doubt her career means much to those over 30 either R6.
|by Anonymous||reply 8||04/16/2013|
Does it bother you that you are no longer a box office draw?
|by Anonymous||reply 9||04/16/2013|
Ms. Streisand, was the singer for Twisted Sister really your identical twin sister?
|by Anonymous||reply 10||04/16/2013|
Did you insist that your daughter-in-law use a bag of ORGANIC frozen peas?
|by Anonymous||reply 12||04/16/2013|
So, far I like r2's question.
|by Anonymous||reply 13||04/16/2013|
Why didn't you ever work with unattractive actors, like Dustin Hoffman? Would this cause audiences to realize how much you look, how can we be delicate, special? Ryan O'Neal, Robert Redford, Nick Nolte are all blonde, handsome and goy. Years later, the car ends up with Seth Rogen. You never got that ice cream, did you Barbra? Tell our audience, where were you born?
|by Anonymous||reply 14||04/16/2013|
I got a question.
Is your daughter mulatto?
|by Anonymous||reply 15||04/16/2013|
Q: Why are you trying to destroy Gypsy?
|by Anonymous||reply 16||04/16/2013|
Q: Is it true The Way We Were is actually a screwball comedy?
|by Anonymous||reply 17||04/16/2013|
Curly or straight, which do you prefer?
|by Anonymous||reply 18||04/16/2013|
Why didn't Lauren Bacall ever tell you that you were pretty growing up, Barbra?
|by Anonymous||reply 19||04/16/2013|
In that "Raiders of the Lost Ark" behind the scenes clip, you made a remark about "fags". You seem to have spent most of your career ignoring your gay fanbase, and have even made homophobic remarks in films. Did God give you Jason because God is a big old queen and thought you needed a lesson?
|by Anonymous||reply 20||04/17/2013|
The Mirror Has Two Faces. Why?
|by Anonymous||reply 21||04/17/2013|
The average person farts 167 times a day. How many times a day do you fart, Ms. Streisand? Have you ever sharted on stage? I think it happens to everyone eventually (even Judy Garland sharted on occasion). My third question: Was Ryan O'Neal as big an asshole in the 1970s as he is now?
|by Anonymous||reply 22||04/17/2013|
Why did you crimp your hair and go down the Stony End?
|by Anonymous||reply 23||04/17/2013|
What did you ever see in that fug Elliott Gould? Was he a Friend of Dorothy? Did he M*A*S*H your lady parts with his giant circumcised phallus?
|by Anonymous||reply 25||04/17/2013|
Q. Miss Streisand, is it true the "help" aren't allowed to make eye contact?
|by Anonymous||reply 26||04/17/2013|
What REALY happened between you and Anne Francis?
|by Anonymous||reply 27||04/17/2013|
This is absurd and these comments aren't even laughable. There are only 2 people making comments on this thread, too. Get a filter for your brain, not everything you say is funny.
|by Anonymous||reply 28||04/17/2013|
Why do all the ancient old queens over 30 worship you, Judy, Liza and Bette? Do you love them back or do you just make like the Steve Miller Band and "Take the Money and Run"?
|by Anonymous||reply 29||04/17/2013|
Q. Do you have your private porta-potty with you here in New York?
|by Anonymous||reply 30||04/17/2013|
Will R28 always be an insufferable bore who cannot enjoy life? Will she always bitch and moan and complain and suffer and cry and weep and belittle and insult and jeer and make sport of others for her own gain? Please tell me she can be saved from the ravages of misery, woe and despair. Can she Barbra? Is it too late for dear R28?
|by Anonymous||reply 31||04/17/2013|
For people who are so derisive of Barbra and her career, you sure are obsessed with her.
|by Anonymous||reply 32||04/17/2013|
R28, Maybe the posters you are complaining about aren't up to your sophisticated comic standards, but your post didn't exactly leave me laughing myself to tears. Chill out, honey. They are not insulting Barbra, I'm sure they love her as much as you do.
|by Anonymous||reply 33||04/17/2013|
R28 is correct. DataLounge relies on wit, wisdom and bitchery and the comments on this thread are purile and absolutely juvenile.
|by Anonymous||reply 34||04/17/2013|
I'm R28 and I only ask that those who post here make an ATTEMPT and genuine humor lest DL fall into a pit of Knock-Knock jokes. That's all.
|by Anonymous||reply 37||04/17/2013|
Are you actually getting off your ass and directing that project with Cate Blanchett, or is that simply on the to don't list?
|by Anonymous||reply 38||04/17/2013|
Is it true, as John Simon wrote, that people nearly broke the theater seats recoiling in horror during your close-ups?
|by Anonymous||reply 39||04/17/2013|
YOU PEOPLE ARE NOT WITTY, FUNNY OR CUTE. YOU'RE ALL DERANGED AND SOCIOPATHIC. BARBRA JOAN STREISAND IS A LIVING LEGEND AND IS NOT DESERVING OF THIS JUVENILE DISRESPECT. YOU SHOULD ALL BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES. GAY MEN AND WOMYN HAVE WORKED TOO HARD TO HAVE A FEW WITLESS JUVENILES THROW IT ALL AWAY. I THINK THE AVERAGE IQ ON THIS THREAD IS 4. BARBRA JOAN STREISAND IS NOT A LAUGHING MATTER. GROW THE HELL UP PEOPLE. GOD FORBID ONE OF US SAYS SOMETHING BAD ABOUT TED NUGENT OR LED ZEPPLIN. YOU'D ALL BE UP IN ARMS. WHITE TRASH IDIOTS.
|by Anonymous||reply 40||04/17/2013|
Wow. Streisand is not directing Cate Blanchett because she is crazy and fought with the producers. Cate quit. Tell us Barbra, what is the movie that you are so urgently working on?
|by Anonymous||reply 42||04/17/2013|
Do wax or shave your mustache?
|by Anonymous||reply 43||04/17/2013|
You know, I have a sneaking suspicion that R28 is that detestable O'Donnell woman. It sounds exactly like her when she's off her meds. Run to the hills!!!
|by Anonymous||reply 44||04/17/2013|
What upsets you so R28.?
There are far more than two posters on this thread and it will likely reach 200 by tomorrow.
Why? Because many people loathe Streisand's humorless, narcissistic personality and over-exalted position in the world of entertainment.
Few under 50 consider her as the world's best anything, in the past or present.
Her time is truly past. Mary Pickford is the greater female film pioneer by about 60 years, and a much better actress too.
Streisand was original and had a beautiful voice, if not a great singer. She has directed. Those are the highlights.
You certainly are a prolific little poster aren't you though? No grammar threads up and running?
|by Anonymous||reply 45||04/17/2013|
Barbie Girl, I have one question. Was it "It's a right I defend over and over again" or was it "It's a ride at the fair, over and over again"?
I have left numerous messages on Barry Gibb's answering machine and he hasn't gotten back to me yet. I must know.
Jimi Hendrix called me back and informed me that it's "'Scuse me, while I kiss the sky", not "'Scuse me while I kiss this guy." He's dead and he responded. Elton John called me back and let me know that it's "Hold me closer, Tiny Dancer" and not "Hold me closer, Tony Danza." He's much busier than you, what with the new baby and all, and he responded to me. Will you?
|by Anonymous||reply 46||04/17/2013|
R28 I know for a fact that there are more than two people posting on this thread. There are at least twelve different people living in my head when I'm off my medication. I ran out some months ago, so...
|by Anonymous||reply 47||04/17/2013|
Babs, are you a Belieber?
|by Anonymous||reply 48||04/17/2013|
R48 I'm not what you would call a Belieber, but I was a Believer. At least until last year.
I have a question for dear Barbra. Barbra, can you get a message to little Marcia Brady for me. Tell her I still think she's the grooviest.
|by Anonymous||reply 49||04/17/2013|
Barbra, have you ever considered rap?
|by Anonymous||reply 50||04/17/2013|
Barbra, do you still wipe back to front?
|by Anonymous||reply 51||04/17/2013|
What can we do to help you face facts?
|by Anonymous||reply 52||04/17/2013|
What is the square root of pi times infinity?
|by Anonymous||reply 53||04/17/2013|
NONE OF YOU ARE FUNNY. YOU'RE STUPID LITTLE TROLL IDIOTS! YOU WOULDN'T KNOW A SENSE OF HUMOR IF IT BIT YOUR BACKSIDE. GET A LIFE.
|by Anonymous||reply 54||04/17/2013|
For your information, trolls. Miss Steisand does not fart, piss or shit. Do not make claims to the contrary.
|by Anonymous||reply 55||04/17/2013|
Boy, the hissing Barbra defenders are out in droves tonight. They really can't take a joke, can they?
|by Anonymous||reply 56||04/17/2013|
Barbra, why did you ruin the "Prince of Tides" by injecting a 30 minute soft focus, soft-core porn interlude with you and Nick Nolte ?
|by Anonymous||reply 57||04/17/2013|
I think Barbra fans could take a joke quite readily if the joke was actually funny. Unfortunately, these 'jokes' are neither funny nor thought-provoking. They're simply desperate attempts to denigrate her by being mean-spirited.
|by Anonymous||reply 58||04/17/2013|
Barbra, would you star in a Broadway production of Hello Dolly if it were offered to you now? How about, say, Elliot Gould as Vandergelder? Be like old times, eh, Babs?
|by Anonymous||reply 59||04/17/2013|
Kisses to R40, and I'll give you the knife to cut these bitches.
|by Anonymous||reply 60||04/17/2013|
When I read people complaining about the deterioration of DL since its birth, I imagine they had threads like this in mind.
|by Anonymous||reply 61||04/17/2013|
Hello, Gorgeous. I've loved you forever. Would you like to have dinner with me?
|by Anonymous||reply 62||04/17/2013|
While you're in NYC, Ms. Streisand, will you be attending either of the hit plays that feature you prominently - "I'll Eat You Last" where Bette Midler plays your ex-agent Sue Mengers, who blames you for her fall from grace in Hollywood and calls you a CUNT live onstage, or "Buyers and Cellars" with Michael Urie as the sole employee of the shopping mall below your barn which depicts you as an obsessive compulsive shopper who is oblivious to her own public image?
I think both productions would be eye-opening to you, Barbra...
|by Anonymous||reply 63||04/17/2013|
And R63 wonders why he had to sit at the lunch table with the geeks and losers in high school.
|by Anonymous||reply 64||04/17/2013|
I think you're all deplorable and will die alone and ashamed. None of this is funny. Barbra Streisand worked hard to get where she is. R-E-S-P-E-C-T, People! It ain't just for Aretha, you know? Show some class.
|by Anonymous||reply 65||04/17/2013|
This thread is useless. I do not answer questions from "underlings."
|by Anonymous||reply 67||04/17/2013|
How can you people hate Barbra so much? She has spent her entire career giving to her fans. What more do you people want? Go back to your Justin Beiber and One Direction threads, kiddoes.
|by Anonymous||reply 68||04/17/2013|
So many pearl clutching hissers here!
|by Anonymous||reply 69||04/17/2013|
In what may be your campiest song ever, "Left in the Dark Again," were you aware that the lyric was "lies" when you were singing "And there are no LICE on your body/As I watch you undress"?
|by Anonymous||reply 70||04/17/2013|
My my my- one of the truly great talents in show business history, one the truly genuine philanthropists in the Los Angeles and the entertainment community, even a gay activist and this is what she gets?
Most of it is not very funny, and of course not very accurate.
She is going to direct the Margaret Bourke White movie, at least so say a whole bunch of press releases.
Makes posters on this thread look pretty stupid- don't you just a tad wonder why she is getting that award Monday in NYC. Ever wonder why she has won just about every other award in show business, except the humanitarian Oscar, and she will get that one too I am sure.
You would think someone would remotely have an interesting question. For instance- I can hear the changes in your voice in recent years, how do you access it?
|by Anonymous||reply 71||04/17/2013|
[quote]You would think someone would remotely have an interesting question. For instance- I can hear the changes in your voice in recent years, how do you access it?
Jesus Christ -- I can't think of a more boring question than THAT!
|by Anonymous||reply 73||04/17/2013|
Babs - why do you think people still care about you? Why can't you gracefully bow out?
|by Anonymous||reply 74||04/17/2013|
Will you be watching "Glee" tomorrow night to see Rachel audition for the Broadway revival of "Funny Girl"?
|by Anonymous||reply 75||04/17/2013|
R74, your shift at the Dairy Queen is about to begin.
|by Anonymous||reply 76||04/17/2013|
Barbra is overrated. My version of "The Way We Were" is far superior to hers.
|by Anonymous||reply 77||04/17/2013|
I bet she was the most insufferable Little Miss Priss in Brooklyn. Sassing down to record songs on vinyl with her mother. Growing her fingernails long so she wouldn't have to do manual labor.
|by Anonymous||reply 78||04/17/2013|
When you fart, do clouds of Chanel No. 5 emerge from your ass?
|by Anonymous||reply 79||04/17/2013|
The hilariously impotent hissing from the charlie-type Babs-worshipping control freaks like r71 makes this one of my favorite threads in weeks.
|by Anonymous||reply 80||04/17/2013|
I wish, but Donna has a fragrance line so I gotta stick with my tribe.
|by Anonymous||reply 81||04/17/2013|
R80 has just confirmed to the world that he lives in his mother's shed and has no friends other than milky the cow.
|by Anonymous||reply 82||04/17/2013|
Babs, what are your plans for your birthday tomorrow? 80th, is it?
|by Anonymous||reply 83||04/23/2013|
