Justin Bieber visited the Anne Frank House yesterday in Amsterdam with throngs of fans screaming his name outside. He signed the guest book, concluding with the message "I hope you could have been a belieber."
What the fuck is wrong with this kid?

Who knows, he may be good at heart.
|by Anonymous||reply 1||04/14/2013|
From a young age he was raised as an income stream in a world apart. It's not his fault. Still, what a stupid thing to say.

Cringed.. the guy's ego is out of control but imagine having those fans from a very young age..
On another note, that place was a great visit - would recommend.
|by Anonymous||reply 5||04/14/2013|
I have a young (compared to me) friend. The first time I mentioned Anne Frank, he had no idea who I was talking about. Good for Justin.
|by Anonymous||reply 6||04/14/2013|
I'm pretty sure he's home-schooled, always has been, and not very well.
|by Anonymous||reply 7||04/14/2013|
It's hilarious. It's (unintentionally) funnier than any Monty Python skit or what most comedians could come up with.
Now I hope this dolt sticks around just so I can benefit from his idio-cisms. I hope he has a long career in the spotlight!
|by Anonymous||reply 8||04/14/2013|
It's all about him.
|by Anonymous||reply 9||04/14/2013|
R6, his handlers probably got him to go for publicity/diplomatic reasons. I doubt he's even read her diary.
|by Anonymous||reply 10||04/14/2013|
He's quite grotesque.
|by Anonymous||reply 11||04/14/2013|
|by Anonymous||reply 12||04/14/2013|
Bieber was home schooled. You think he knows who Anne Frank was? I don't think so.

If he had an interest in history than he wouldn't have embarassed himself. But he doesn't care about history, Europe, or literature.
Many young people do care about those things and are voracious readers. Many young people are self-taught because their families don't support their interest in education.

It's actually a shame that little girls are subjected to this meltdown, the ugly collapse of their hormonally-challenged dream date. He should be in hiding, detoxing his doped up ass. This is the ugly, ritualistic side of Hollywood (per the witches thread): we're subjected to the unjustified hype that is impossible to avoid, then we're subjected to the ghoulish documentation of the pawn's destruction. Then the record company rolls out the greatest hits collections after the OD. Tiresome and sick.

|by Anonymous||reply 38||04/14/2013|
He was apparently a nasty piece of work when he hosted SNL a few months ago. A crew friend of mine told me that he pushed himself past an electrician (who'd been there since 1975) and muttered "Out of my way, old man." And at the after party a waitress refused to serve him a beer because he was underage and he yelled out "Hey, how about I get sent a PRETTY waitress to my table next time?" Revolting little shit.
|by Anonymous||reply 39||04/14/2013|
Bieber also wrote the following post-script:
P.S. Too bad she did Nazi any of my concerts.
|by Anonymous||reply 40||04/14/2013|
She very well could have been. She wasn't a saint, she was a tween girl who had a crush on the guy who was hiding with her.
|by Anonymous||reply 41||04/14/2013|
OP/R39 - was this the same crew friend who said everyone at SNL knew he was a "flamer" and had been "passed around" at a young age. Or are you a different SNL insider?
|by Anonymous||reply 42||04/14/2013|
R41 is a killjoy.
|by Anonymous||reply 43||04/14/2013|
There are a lot of stories about him being a complete nightmare.
I look forward to his fan base hitting puberty and being embarrassed by their obsession with this little shit. I don't think he'll have a transition like Timberlake.
|by Anonymous||reply 44||04/14/2013|
R41. Finally, someone gets it.
|by Anonymous||reply 45||04/14/2013|
I would not be at all surprised if he ends up broke, R31. It sounds like he's a voracious spender and his circle of creeps and sycophants are probably spending all his money. Especially that gross manager.
Does Justin Bieber know how his money is being managed? Doubt it.
|by Anonymous||reply 46||04/14/2013|
Remember the days when teen idols didn't look like lesbians?
|by Anonymous||reply 47||04/14/2013|
I'm with R41. If Anne Frank had been a 13-year-old girl today, she probably would've been a fan of Bieber. At the time, she had a fascination with Hollywood movies and American* culture. She even wrote about one of her photographs: "This is a photograph of me as I wish I looked all the time. Then I might still have a chance of getting to Hollywood. But at present, I'm afraid, I usually look quite different." She also hung posters/pictures of Hollywood stars in her attic room. In short, she was not above liking the latest flash in the pan or flavor of the month.
*I realize Bieber is Canadian by birth, but he's made his career and fortune in America.
|by Anonymous||reply 48||04/14/2013|

What a coincidence, R62, so is Justin Beiber!
|by Anonymous||reply 63||04/14/2013|
Has anyone seen Bieber and Sam Ronson together?
|by Anonymous||reply 64||04/14/2013|
This comment was so over the top that it makes me giggle a bit just thinking about it. Hopefully the public and press will take up the charge. I see lots of spoofs to be made at any place there was a great tragedy.
"They could've been a belieber" is a new meme for sure.
|by Anonymous||reply 65||04/14/2013|
We don't know if she'd be a believer? We weren't there! We don't know!
|by Anonymous||reply 66||04/14/2013|
R62, Anne wasn't a lesbian. It's true that she was fascinated by her changing body and she and a girl friend compared beasts (she wrote about it in her diary), but many adolescents go through that, boys and girls. But she also wrote about liking and dating certain boys even before she went into hiding and how she longed for her first kiss, which Peter ended up giving to her in the annex.
|by Anonymous||reply 67||04/14/2013|
Oh Whoppi. We know, we know.
|by Anonymous||reply 68||04/14/2013|
He is an idiot.
|by Anonymous||reply 69||04/14/2013|

|by Anonymous||reply 70||04/14/2013|
|by Anonymous||reply 71||04/14/2013|

|by Anonymous||reply 72||04/14/2013|
She very well could have been. She wasn't a saint, she was a tween girl who had a crush on the guy who was hiding with her
The point is, instead of writing something about her or what he'd learned, he wrote a comment that was about himself and his ego.
|by Anonymous||reply 73||04/14/2013|
If you want to understand celebrities and the people who surround them and live off of them, watch the old Twilight Zone episode with Billy Mumy (Lost in Space) as the child who will wish you into the cornfield if he doesn't like your thoughts or words. You displease him, you're out, or worse, made into a jack in the box.
|by Anonymous||reply 74||04/14/2013|
"She very well could have been. She wasn't a saint, she was a tween girl who had a crush on the guy who was hiding with her."
You obviously don't know anything about Anne Frank. She a typical young girl in many ways, but she had a lot more depth and intelligence and sensitivity and maturity than any idiot "belieber."
|by Anonymous||reply 75||04/14/2013|
In spite of everything, I still believe that Bieber is basically boring.
|by Anonymous||reply 76||04/14/2013|
Would someone kick R1 in the cunt so hard the foot lodges in it, and then stomp on it all the way to a Goodwill Store?
|by Anonymous||reply 77||04/14/2013|
I really don't see what was so wrong. Maybe he just felt like Anne is someone he would have liked to have known. Simple and childish, but not a big fucking deal, either.
|by Anonymous||reply 78||04/14/2013|
I think this was a moment of brilliant insight in a storm of desperation and downfall. That or the brilliance of it came by accident.
|by Anonymous||reply 79||04/14/2013|
I heard when he went to an old folks home to 'check out the old peeps and do a little charity work, yo' a while back, he stipulated that none of the residents look him in the eyes. And he laughed at those with colostomy bags.
He is a real piece of work.
|by Anonymous||reply 80||04/14/2013|

Maybe she could have. She was young, and probably would want to have mindless fun given her stressful situation.
|by Anonymous||reply 84||04/14/2013|
Well, if Anne were a fan, she would have had to be be very quiet about it upstairs in the attic.
Justin Bieber is a douchebag. Someone needs to pull him aside and smack him upside the head.
|by Anonymous||reply 85||04/14/2013|

|by Anonymous||reply 87||04/14/2013|
What a little shithead. Such a douchebag.
|by Anonymous||reply 88||04/14/2013|
Well, now we all know that R77 really doesn't know anything about Anne Frank.
|by Anonymous||reply 89||04/14/2013|
Thank you, R89.
That was shocking. I'm glad I don't have a cunt.
|by Anonymous||reply 90||04/14/2013|

|by Anonymous||reply 91||04/14/2013|
Would the someone do the same with R89 and propel both R1 and her down the street? Apparently mincingly cooing about poor Justin in simpering, moderate tones is what these asses think serves the DL mission.
R1 failed his role and R89 pretends knowledge she doesn't have.
|by Anonymous||reply 92||04/14/2013|
When is his 15 minutes up?
|by Anonymous||reply 93||04/14/2013|
He's due for a "open mic" scandal, where he's caught saying something derogatory about his fans or something wildly offensive that his career is scuttled beyond saving.
|by Anonymous||reply 94||04/14/2013|
R92, you're just so dumb.
And I don't like Justin Bieber at all. He's a Wigger-speaking lesbian AFAIC.
But I think Anne Frank, a teenage girl with a predilection for American stars, might have liked him. And there's no way you can prove otherwise.
Speaking of you, while Anne might have assumed you were good at heart, I do not. I think you're stupid and mean.
|by Anonymous||reply 95||04/14/2013|
Not the point, R95. The point is that he went to a place of great historical significance, a place where any decent person would be humbled into considering the disappointments and wonders of nothing less of humanity itself.
And with the egotistical stroke of a pen, the kid made it all about himself.
|by Anonymous||reply 96||04/14/2013|
The entire debate about whether Anne Frank would have liked Bieber or not is completely nonsensical.
|by Anonymous||reply 97||04/14/2013|
I wish she had lived so I could talk to her about my love for Jesus.
|by Anonymous||reply 98||04/14/2013|
Such a statement would be perhaps somewhat understandable if he were 12, but he's 19 years old.
|by Anonymous||reply 99||04/14/2013|
His comment was even more simple-minded and grotesque than OPs paraphrase... "Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a belieber."
Maybe on his next tour they can drag him through the Nat'l Civil Rights Museum. "Rosa was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a belieber."
|by Anonymous||reply 100||04/14/2013|
Given the entertainment industry's obsessive promotion of arbitrary change (except for rap of course) Justin will be needing to reshape his image soon in a dramatic way. I'm thinking he's hit on something brilliant here. His music can go retro with a very hard edge. Nazi themed costumes, big swastika flags in the stadiums, etc. Fans will be known as Bieber Youth.
|by Anonymous||reply 101||04/14/2013|
I think she would've preferred Donny Osmond.
|by Anonymous||reply 102||04/14/2013|
r95 how old are you? My god! we're talking about a girl who died in 1945 and became the face of the atrocity of the Nazis and you're arguing about whether she would have been a Bieber fan? It's unreal. It's un-DL.
This is a very simple story: it's about lack of respect for the person and her place in history, not to mention the place which was essentially her concentration camp.
|by Anonymous||reply 103||04/14/2013|
He clearly has a God complex. Isn't that blasphemous in his religion?
|by Anonymous||reply 104||04/14/2013|
|by Anonymous||reply 105||04/14/2013|
These things happen.
|by Anonymous||reply 106||04/14/2013|
Could have been worse. He could have written: "It's sad that she never got to accept Jesus Christ as her personal saviour".
|by Anonymous||reply 107||04/14/2013|
Anne Frank had an interest in famous people. She put up pictures of movie stars and the young princesses Elizabeth and Margaret in the annex to make her surrounding more cheerful. But I seriously doubt she would have been a swooning, shrieking, worshipping "fan" of some dumb singing doofus. She was a lot more interesting in the young males she actually knew then in fantasy figures. In school she was quite popular with the boys; she had an engaging, outgoing personality that drew people to her, both male and female. She had a lot of friends; she didn't have any need or desire to moon over somebody she didn't even know.
|by Anonymous||reply 108||04/14/2013|
I'm quite old, I assure you, R103.
I've read Anne Frank's diary at least ten times. I feel qualified to speak in this thread, not just because of familiarity with Anne Frank, but also because I would have had an uncle, my mother's half-brother, if he hadn't died in Dachau.
What I recall most of all about her, R103 -- her throughline, if you will, one made all the more ironic by her time in both the annex and her actual concentration camp, Bergen-Belsen, is the quote I paraphrased in R1, "“Despite everything, I believe people are really good at heart."
I [italic]continue[/italic] to believe Anne would have found Justin "good at heart," despite what he wrote.
|by Anonymous||reply 109||04/14/2013|
Again R108, what the fuck does that have to do with anything? No one's debating Anne Frank. People are debating Bieber's behavior and his ego.
|by Anonymous||reply 110||04/14/2013|
I'm pretty certain that Anne Frank wouldn't have cared much about Bieber's comment one way or the other. He and she are both products of their times and circumstances. Justin has spent a good many years in his career bubble and doesn't have a good sense of how some things are perceived by the more hysterical and politically correct. Some of you people are taking this way too seriously.
|by Anonymous||reply 111||04/14/2013|
We're debating both and we *can* debate both, asshole.
|by Anonymous||reply 112||04/14/2013|
People are debating Bieber's behavior and his ego.
Only because he made a specific comment - about Anne Frank possibly being a "belieber" if things had been different. You're trying to pretend that her potentially liking a young star isn't part of it because you just want to get more sanctimonious about this.
|by Anonymous||reply 113||04/14/2013|
True, R41, but that isn't point at all. She may have been an ordinary tween girl, but the reason so many people took an interest in her diary is that she put an individual human face on the innocent victims of the Nazi regime. Bieber making it all about HIM is just cringe worthy. It wasn't the time or the place.
|by Anonymous||reply 114||04/14/2013|
I'm quite old, I assure you
I'm thinking this may be the first time this has ever been typed on datalounge.
|by Anonymous||reply 115||04/14/2013|
Bieber making it all about HIM is just cringe worthy. It wasn't the time or the place.
Which might matter if it were possible to believe he knows the difference between "time and place" and "not the time or place." I don't think he does.
As I wrote earlier, I a friend who's now 36 who had no idea who Anne Frank was when he was 19. 17 years later, do you [italic]really[/italic] think Justin Bieber even had a clue about the Holocaust or Anne Frank before visiting Het Achterhuis?
I mean, come on. Do you? Really?
|by Anonymous||reply 116||04/14/2013|
17 years later, do you really think Justin Bieber even had a clue about the Holocaust or Anne Frank before visiting Het Achterhuis?
Given that he made the comment right after leaving the house, and he had just read all about it in the supporting materials the house/museum provides, and he saw where she hid, and likely had a tour guide explaining it to him: yes, I am certain he had a clue about it when he wrote that stunningly self-important comment down.
|by Anonymous||reply 117||04/14/2013|
So what's your point R116? R117 is totally correct, but even if he didn't why should we allow people to get away with their ignorance? This isn't some poor impoverished kid we're talking about. If he's stupid now, it's by choice and we certainly don't have to indulge him.
|by Anonymous||reply 118||04/14/2013|
I'm 33 and I've known about Anne Frank since I was 13. We read the play in school and her diary for extra credit. Also, in 2001 an Emmy-winning TV movie was released. To make excuses for Bieber and your stupid friend for not knowing who she is, is beyond ridiculous. My brother who's a sports nut and doesn't give a shit about history knows who Anne Frank, even if it's nothing beyond her hiding from the Nazis. You have to be really stupid or living under a rock to not at least know her name.
|by Anonymous||reply 119||04/14/2013|
I bet if Justin Bieber was at a performance of The Diary of Anne Frank starring Selena Gomez he'd yell to the Nazis at the end of the play "She's in the attic!"
|by Anonymous||reply 120||04/14/2013|
Emmy Rossum, surprisingly, nails it: “Anne Frank suffered WW2 and Justin Bieber hopes she would have been a fan? I have no words.”
Would all you Bieber acolytes read this and at least TRY to understand what is so offensive about what he wrote?
|by Anonymous||reply 121||04/14/2013|
Most of us were ready to do that.
|by Anonymous||reply 122||04/14/2013|
My music might have taken her mind off that whole Nazi thing.
|by Anonymous||reply 123||04/14/2013|
Emmy Rossum, surprisingly, nails it
Actually, she doesn't. Almost everyone living in Europe at the time suffered WW2. What Anne Frank suffered was much more specific, and more gruesome - namely, the Holocaust. So Emmy Rossum's statement was kind of dumb itself - she shouldn't get on her high horse yet.
|by Anonymous||reply 124||04/14/2013|
Would all you Bieber acolytes
I AM NOT A BIEBER ACOLYTE.
And I'm out. Take your outrage elsewhere.
|by Anonymous||reply 125||04/14/2013|
Are there really people like r124 who are purposely obtuse?
r6/r119 can you give us a little background into your supposed "friend" who has never heard of Anne Frank? Was he homeschooled? from a country that doesn't give a damn about WW2 or the Holocaust? I'm just curious. I don't know any child going to school who would not have heard of Anne Frank. It's like not knowing who Ghandi or MLK is. It's compulsory and every child learns about these great figures.
|by Anonymous||reply 126||04/14/2013|
r121, it's too much fun annoying sanctimonious twats like you.
We're familiar with WWII. We know what happened. But knowing that doesn't mean we have to go into fits whenever someone mentions it in a way that doesn't meet your demands of appropriateness. I'll bet you complained that Hogan's Heroes was "too soon."
|by Anonymous||reply 127||04/14/2013|
Not r119. r6/r116
|by Anonymous||reply 128||04/14/2013|
Emmy Rossum comes off like an idiot as well. First, for what she says. Second, for the fact that she thinks anyone cares to get her thoughts on Anne Frank.
|by Anonymous||reply 129||04/14/2013|
Its AnnE, damn you all. AnnE!
|by Anonymous||reply 130||04/14/2013|
I bet Lazaro Perez never heard of Anne Frank.

|by Anonymous||reply 133||04/14/2013|
Well, R129, she posted it on her personal Twitter and she has over 300 thousand followers who've commented. It's not like she had a press conference and invited the media to listen to what she had to say. It's not different from people on Facebook or here commenting on it, it's just that she happens to be famous.
|by Anonymous||reply 134||04/14/2013|
At the least, it comes across as poorly worded comment on Anne's age and how she would have acted if alive. At worst, it appears on Bieber's part to be self-promotional and self-serving. I think the latter is why many people are getting upset about the comment -- in today's world it seems like a lot of people, especially "celebrities" from anywhere on the B-list to the bottom of the Z-list are always trying to promote and sell themselves at every opportunity, from the Kardashian clan to the "Teen Mom" trying to sell her sex tape for millions.
|by Anonymous||reply 135||04/14/2013|
[R6] can you give us a little background into your supposed "friend" who has never heard of Anne Frank? Was he homeschooled? from a country that doesn't give a damn about WW2 or the Holocaust?
I didn't meet him until he was 19, so I wasn't around for his grammar school education. I think he went to a private Christian school in Fairfax County, VA, for high school.
For me it was an exercise in learning that people born in the late '70s don't necessarily have the same frame of reference of sets of knowledge as baby boomers. (He had yet to learn about the Mary Movies as well, but another time, another place.)
And trust me, I was as shocked as any of you. "You've [italic]never[/italic] of Anne Frank? Really? [italic]Anne Frank[/italic]?
|by Anonymous||reply 136||04/14/2013|
I fear that Bieber's narcissistic, at best, and sacrilegious, at worst, comment truly signals the end of days. If this is the kind of idiocy the inhabitants of this world possess, I don't want to know.
|by Anonymous||reply 137||04/14/2013|
r136 if your friend was born in the late '70s, then he's about my age. Anne Frank was very much a figure taught in school. By the 1980s when I was in grammar school, we did learn about Anne Frank. In junior high, again, the story of Anne Frank was once again taught. We read her diary. We watched a movie about her and we wrote about her.
Even if your friend attended a private Christian grammar school, surely he would have learned about her either in junior high or high school. Are you saying he attended a Christian school all the way through high school?
It's not rare for people manufacture a "friens" just to bolster a point they are trying to make.
|by Anonymous||reply 138||04/14/2013|
R138 I didn't say he attended Christian grammar school. I don't know where he went to grammar school. I said he went to a Christian high school is as much as I know.
I would not bother making anything up. That you would accuse me of doing so says more about how you think, and do things, than anything about me.
Your insistence that I've made someone up tells me you are really making this a personal attack on me. So far, I've tried to stick to the issue at hand.
But now I must wonder aloud about you: Are you this vicious in all areas of life? You must have lots of friends. Or maybe you drink all day -- "for people manufacture 'friens'" kind of bears that out. That and your failure to mirror back the whole grammar school/high school business.
I've never been so hissed and shrieked at before. "Welcome to DL"?

How much longer before this little prick fades out of popularity?
|by Anonymous||reply 140||04/14/2013|
Whatever Anne Frank's interests in popular culture may have been in the early 1940s, it is beyond bizarre and incredibly absurd for him to transpose the young girl who died in 1945 into a teenager in 2013.
He spent an hour in the house. Was he unable to glean anything from that visit? Surely someone must have explained to him before he went -- or while he was there -- the significance of the house.
And, yet, none of that stuck, apparently. So, yes, he did make it all about himself, and in the process he came off as a vulgar, stupid, dim-witted, little moron.
And, this quote from Anne:
Despite everything, I believe people are really good at heart.
does not excuse the stupidity. We can understand his idiocy, and even, on some level, forgive it. But that doesn't mean he gets a pass for bad behavior or for all the ridiculous utterances that fall out of his pea-size brain.

The thing about the Anne Frank story that DL should get a kick out of was that the family was basically turned in because another envious family coveted their space. An early version on co-op wars.
|by Anonymous||reply 172||04/14/2013|
That's not true, R172. Only on DL would people make up shit and pass it on as fact AND have people believe it.
|by Anonymous||reply 173||04/14/2013|
Who were these people, R172? I'd not heard that before. Here's what Miep Gies, who managed things on the outside had to say about who turned the Franks in:
How did the Nazis find the attic? Who do you think turned the Franks in to the Green Police?
Someone must have betrayed them to the Nazis. We never found out. Don't forget that many people lived in that neighborhood and possibly noticed something by day or heard something at night. It could have been one of the burglars that came to that place. It could have also been one of the people working in the building. We will never know.
The Austrian policeman was interviewed afterward, but he did not know who had called the police with the information. The Nazi who took the call died. So they could not ask him who had called. No one knows.
Twice, after the war, the Dutch police made an extensive effort to find the person who turned my friends in. Without success! There were suspicions. Some people were pointing at the man working in the warehouse, but the Court decided there was no evidence. Also, in my opinion, I don't think this man has done it. So, we don't know!
|by Anonymous||reply 174||04/14/2013|

Beiber is an asshole. When he was here in Sydney, he appeared on a morning show and threw a spectacular tantrum off camera. He was bossing around the crew and mewing about this and that so I believe the SNL story. The kid is going to end up like Corey Haim.

"...do you think his fans even know what WWII and the Holocaust are?"
Excellent point. In 2005, I taught a class at a Brooklyn college and, as a historical referent to the subject at hand, asked the class, "What seminal event began on September 1, 1939?" After a period of nervous shuffling, averting my glance and predictable silence, a student sheepishly raised her hand and offered, "The Civil War?"
|by Anonymous||reply 180||04/14/2013|
My partner is a college professor and said he had a student in his class that had never heard of the American Civil War. You have to go to a good school and pay attention. Some people have no interest in learning. They just coast.

He must be a professor at Hudson University. Those kids are so busy shooting themselves up with heroin and murdering one another they have no time to read anything.

Jesus, we read the Diary of Anne Frank in 8th grade.
But then poor little Biebs was homeschooled by an Xtian uneducated mom who was pushing him to stardom.
Yet, if he took off his ridiculous shades and read everything during the tour he would have felt some emotional impact from the tour and not been so self absorbed in his comments. Obviously his handlers made him do this...with disastrous results by Justin's idiotic hand.
They're trying to clean it up. The Daily Mail isn't reporting it. ONTD threads have been nuked.
He did it for the legions of "Beliebers" waiting for him outside. He probably wandered through while talking about when his newest Ferrari was going to arrive and who the latest women his pre-pubescent self was going to bang later on. Followed by lots of weed stops in Amsterdam.
His handlers thought it would be a good PR show...but Justin's own ego just sank it.

Again, everything in context. Who are these students and are they from a foreign country where our historical wars were not taught.
Sorry but I just don't believe some of the claims. You don't learn everything in school, but you get references from other sources like the media, a book, current event, or your own personal life. To not know about the Civil War would likely mean they don't know who Abraham Lincoln is.

The student was an American female. He's at a major state university where you have to have good SAT scores to get in. Why the hell would he lie about something like that? Get a group of professors together and you'll be amazed at the stupid stuff students have said in their classes.

I've never been, but I'm not surprised. I gathered it was spacious from Anne's lengthy description, and the edition I read included the floor plans of the building. Plus, all the movie versions have shown that it wasn't a cramped attic space.
|by Anonymous||reply 191||04/14/2013|
Saying dumb things in class is not the same as an American college student clueless as to what the Civil War is. I don't buy it.
Unless she has been home schooled all her life and American history was never taught. Even then, so what? References to the Civil War is everywhere in the media; when talking about Abraham Lincoln; about slavery; African-Americans; about past wars.
|by Anonymous||reply 192||04/14/2013|
Yeah, I don't buy an American college student not knowing about the Civil War, either. Maybe some obscure war like the French and Indian war that is taught in passing but doesn't get much attention or novel/film adaptations. But the Civil War is very important to the history of the US and is second to WWII where films and books are concerned.
|by Anonymous||reply 193||04/14/2013|

Why was BeBe even visiting the Anne Frank house if he didn't know the significance of it?
BeBe knowing that Anne Frank as a historical figure is not relevant. He must have at least known she was a girl who had died young. And to make that comment is grotesque no matter how famous the dead girl actually is.

As a teacher, I can tell you the kids in this generation only watch what they want to watch, and only see what they want to see. Their universe is framed by a small screen they can put into their purse or pocket. They might know Anne Frank if she had a facebook page, a twitter account or knew how to text. Otherwise, it's too much work to look further.
Yes, I'm cynical. I heard of this story today when one of the employees at a coffeehouse was talking about it. A four or five year old girl lit up when she heard Bieber's name. She was quick to tell her Mommy Bieber has a new girlfriend.
My British grandfather was killed while fighting Rommel's troops in Tunisia in 1942. My mother was eight years old when she was told Daddy wasn't coming home. It affected her in so many ways we could see. So, this story hits a nerve with me. WW2 still impacts people today. It wasn't so long ago.
|by Anonymous||reply 198||04/14/2013|
Bieber's comment is deeply offensive. He went through the house where Anne Frank and her family hid and was so little affected by their story that his only comment was a thoroughly self-involved, narcissistic one. It is shocking and embarrassing. I think this is the beginning of the end for him. Despite all the silly behavior which has preceded this, this one act of jaw-dropping narcissism will be his undoing.

You would think it was a clue when he could not name the continents on Letterman. Dave had to apologize for making the Justin child look stupid, but should not have.
If his PR team were taking him to Anne Frank's house to rehab some of his other recent fuck-ups, why couldn't they tell him where he was going and to wear clean underwear and say nothing? The truth is that the poor guy is literally too ignorant to know how he comes across by saying such a thing. He probably meant something akin to "Learning about this tween girl from the past made me think of my own young girl fans around that age and their joy at life; drove home the tragedy, etc."

I think Bieber has been coddled by his own parents, and then the music industry. I honestly think he believes his own publicity. Neobody's telling otherwise. He's surrounded by yes-men and sycophants. It's been that way for most of his teen years., and naturally it's gotten to his head. Like many 19-year-olds he thinks he's invincible, but multiply that by 100. Failure is going to be a rude awakening.

|by Anonymous||reply 231||04/15/2013|
The worrying thing about this is I keep seeing posts on various sites that debate whether or not Anne Frank would have been a Justin Beiber fan. I can't be the only one stunned that people are seriously having that discussion, like it's the only question about the Holocaust left to answer. Have they colonised any other planets that I could go and live on yet?
|by Anonymous||reply 232||04/15/2013|
r229 I don't think he really knows who Anne Frank is. He knows her name (like he knows the Sistine Chapel exists) but I doubt he understands what she went through and her place in history. This kid was home schooled and then by his early teens, he was focusing on his music career. There's not much left in between for any studies.
So while those of us who do understand the gravity of what the Franks and other Jews suffered under the Nazis, I don't think Bieber grasp that enormity.
|by Anonymous||reply 233||04/15/2013|
I can't believe his PR people are actually trying to cover this up.
|by Anonymous||reply 234||04/15/2013|
Prince Harry was about the same age when her wore a Nazi armband to a BAD TASTE PARTY while the Musical "The Producers" was running in London. I didn't see or hear anyone giving him a pass because he was 19. I don't thing JB deserves a pass either.
|by Anonymous||reply 235||04/15/2013|
|by Anonymous||reply 236||04/15/2013|
I never even knew it was a Bad Taste Party, that goes a long way to explaining it. Maybe Prince Harry went over the line, but obviously he thought going over the line was the point. JB has no excuse, a 19 yr old who is completely unfamiliar with the holocaust, the proposed explanation for his flippant comment, is an idiot, home-schooled or not. How stupid would you have to be to take that tour and have it go completely over your head? Surely the phrase "6 million Jews killed" was used, you wouldn't need to know any more than that to grasp the gravity of the situation.
|by Anonymous||reply 237||04/15/2013|
JB is in the Bad Test Decade (or is it decades now?), so maybe that is it?
|by Anonymous||reply 238||04/15/2013|
R233 did you miss the part of this story where Bieber was AT the Anne Frank house? One would presume that he learned at least some of her history while there.
|by Anonymous||reply 239||04/15/2013|
Wow, people on here making a mountain over nothing. He at least went to the museum which wouldn't occur to the majority of 19 year olds.
And Anne Frank was not a saint nor a genius, she was a very typical young girl who complained about her parents not understanding her, had sibling rivalry & a big crushes, which is why what happened to her was tragic. Because she was so normal. She & her sister decorated the walls of their hideout with pictures of what you'd call celebrities of her time. Supposedly they show that in the museum. Maybe he was referencing this.
I have a feeling not one of you outraged people actually read the Diary of Anne Frank. And the venom on here puts some of you on an even lower maturity level than this guy. This is what he got out of the museum this time. If he visits again maybe he'll get something else out.
But I think some of you superior people on here need to realize you don't get to tell anyone how to respond to events like this. You're not the Holocaust thought police.
|by Anonymous||reply 240||04/15/2013|
Bieber horsing around at the Anne Frank museum.
|by Anonymous||reply 241||04/15/2013|
He's not a saint for going to a museum. It's Amsterdam. There's not that fucking much to do.
|by Anonymous||reply 242||04/15/2013|
In Amsterdam he could have spent most of his time in the red light district smoking pot.
|by Anonymous||reply 243||04/15/2013|
Wow. People like r240 actually exist among the trash of datalounge? Your post was like a pristine oasis of sanity amid a land of rotting shit.
|by Anonymous||reply 244||04/15/2013|
I'd still poke him. Hell, I'd do him in the AF house.
|by Anonymous||reply 245||04/15/2013|
Actually, R240, I think most of the posters here have read the Diary of Anne Frank, which is why it is so unbelievably offensive that the only thing Justin got out of seeing the house where she hid for years is "yeah, she probably have dug me."
If you don't see the ridiculous ego and hubris in that statement, you are as moronic as his army of tween "Beliebers."
|by Anonymous||reply 246||04/15/2013|
r241, WTF is he doing with his hands?
Are those gang signs?
What Canadian rich white boy "GANG" is he a part of ?
Does he take himself seriously?
|by Anonymous||reply 247||04/15/2013|
r247, he has to do that wigger shit to stay in the good graces of the music industry. That's the propaganda they've been pushing for the last 2 decades.
|by Anonymous||reply 248||04/15/2013|
"If you don't see the ridiculous ego and hubris in that statement, you are as moronic as his army of tween "Beliebers"
By your thinking, I guess the Anne Frank Museum and the Anti-Defamation League are morons then?
|by Anonymous||reply 249||04/15/2013|
R240, what was insensitive about his comment is that he took the tour, where they give you a run-down of the Holocaust and her story, what she and her family endured while hiding from the Nazis, and how she eventually died in a death camp at age fifteen. But after all that, the only thing he could make was a self-serving comment?
|by Anonymous||reply 250||04/15/2013|
Jeez, you heartless bastards! The kid weas just making a joke. Lighten up.
|by Anonymous||reply 251||04/15/2013|
Jon Benet was a Beleiber too!
|by Anonymous||reply 252||04/15/2013|
Tempest in a teapot and the press, and many on this thread are being ridiculous. Anyone who gets up close to horror on any level, if they are remotely normal, personalize it to try an understand it. Anne Frank might well have been a belieber (I am no fan, but I am not a 13 year old girl), but I think his tweet can be interpreted as an innocent desire to be friends with her- to what her to like him which is a universal desire. R240 nailed it.
I think the press is out of control
|by Anonymous||reply 253||04/15/2013|
Someone should collect all the over-the-top sanctimonious posts about how horrible this was and put them in one post. It would be fun to laugh at.
|by Anonymous||reply 254||04/15/2013|
It wasn't a tweet, R253, he wrote it in the Anne Frank House guestbook. It's starts out fine, but the last sentence was just self-serving:
Truly inspiring to be able to come here. Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a belieber.
Mind you, he's not just speculating that she would have been a so-called Belieber if she were a 13-year-old girl today, but that he HOPES that she would have been. It implies that she would not be worth his time otherwise.
|by Anonymous||reply 255||04/15/2013|
R255, does not imply that at all.
|by Anonymous||reply 256||04/15/2013|
I see the Bieber PR brigade has arrived.
|by Anonymous||reply 257||04/15/2013|
If it were one separate episode, it may have been overlooked but Bieber seems to be out-douching himself at every possible turn.
|by Anonymous||reply 258||04/15/2013|
|by Anonymous||reply 259||04/15/2013|

Rabbi defends Bieber An expert on Anne Frank came to Bieber's defense Monday. Had Frank been born 70 years later, she would have likely been a "belieber," said Rabbi Marvin Hier, founder and dean of the Simon Weisenthal Center in Los Angeles. "There's nothing insulting about that," Rabbi Hier told CNN. "She was very modern and she could very likely be his fan and on Twitter." Hier has studied Frank's life and journal closely in preparation for the creation of a permanent exhibit at his center's Museum of Tolerance in Beverly Hills. "Anne Frank was a very modern girl," he said. "In the room, she had pictures of Hollywood stars. She was infatuated with Hollywood."
|by Anonymous||reply 262||04/15/2013|
R247, I'm not so sure that Canadian rich white boys have to stand on street corners to sing for nickles and dimes to help support a family. Unless that passes for rich in Canada. I'm sorry but how psychologically disturbed and damaged does a person have to be to call someone a white nigger? Clearly they come from the same background as Bieber before the fame. Nothing else explains such crass, crude, and simple minded language and attitude.
|by Anonymous||reply 263||04/15/2013|
Rednecks and "wiggas" have a long running feud, R263. Think Hatfields and McCoys level of feud. You understand.
|by Anonymous||reply 264||04/15/2013|
That Rabbi at R262 and other idiot Beliebers on this thread are missing the point: No one's debating whether she would have been a Belieber in this day and age, it's Bieber's self-serving message on the guestbook that "Hopefully she would have been a Belieber" that is off-putting, especially after taking the tour and finding out the horrors of the Holocaust and what she and her family went through. No reflection whatsoever.
It would be like going to the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC and writing, "If the Holocaust hadn't happened, 6 million people hopefully would have been Beliebers."
|by Anonymous||reply 265||04/15/2013|
I am sorry to learn that Anne Frank was killed by a typist because she couldn't concentrate at camp. Never again will I forget the significance of the hollow cost.
|by Anonymous||reply 266||04/15/2013|
God, you "beliebers" are fucking retarded!
GTFOff DL, you idiots!
|by Anonymous||reply 267||04/15/2013|

Bieber's a baby wigger. That's just a fact.
That's what he wants to be.
|by Anonymous||reply 268||04/15/2013|
Funny enough, R268. You clearly have no idea what calling someone a white nigger makes you. But I wouldn't expect someone like you to truly understand such complexities. It looks like R264 has it pegged, so I can't reason with the likes of you, so I won't bother. I guess it's OK to call people a straight faggot too.
|by Anonymous||reply 269||04/15/2013|

|by Anonymous||reply 272||04/15/2013|
Damn, I thought the fangirls were crazed until R270 came along. Talk about missing a point. And you wonder why the gay community is the way it is. If you have to be a Belieber to be against the use of racial or offensive slurs (in a thread on a gay forum that touches on the horrors of the Holocaust), then I have a newly discovered respect for Bieber fans.
|by Anonymous||reply 273||04/15/2013|
Let me translate this into Gay for those who don't seem to get it: This is as if Joan Crawford toured the Ann Frank House and wrote" I hope you would have preferred Pepsi."
|by Anonymous||reply 274||04/15/2013|
"He at least went to the museum which wouldn't occur to the majority of 19 year olds."
Actually, a lot of teenagers (and CHILDREN) like to go to museums. Not all teenagers are idiot "beliebers."
"She & her sister decorated the walls of their hideout with pictures of what you'd call celebrities of her time. Supposedly they show that in the museum. Maybe he was referencing this.'
Are you kidding? That stupid douchbag wasn't "referencing" anything. Stop trying to make excuses for this clod. You must be a "belieber."
|by Anonymous||reply 275||04/15/2013|
Justin, be quiet and eat your weirdo.

That Rabbi is a retard. NOTHING about Anne Frank suggests that she would be a Twittering idiot with a crush on Justin Bieber. And she was definitely NOT "infatuated with Hollywood." She wanted to be a writer, to travel, to meet interesting people. But she absolutely did NOT have an infatuation with Hollywood. Putting some pictures of dancers, movies stars and Princesses on the wall to make her surroundings more pleasant does not constitute "infatuation."
That idiot Rabbi sounds like HE'S a "belieber."
|by Anonymous||reply 277||04/15/2013|
Anyone who doesn't see the monstrous egotism in his message in that guestbook is a moron.

|by Anonymous||reply 279||04/15/2013|
"Prayers for the people who died in Boston today, yo. I like to think that had they not had their limbs blown off and spattered the sidewalks with their blood, they'd have been beliebers. New single drops next week!"
|by Anonymous||reply 280||04/15/2013|
"Had Frank been born 70 years later", there would be no house to visit would there, nor her particular destiny to be ignorant of.
Everyone wants to be relevant, even the dean of the Weisenthal Center. What a disappointing world we live in.

From The Onion:
Justin Bieber Fan Jealous Of Anne Frank
ISSUE 49•16 • Apr 15, 2013
TALLAHASSEE, FL—Following weekend reports that teen pop sensation Justin Bieber visited the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, local Bieber fan Khloe McNeal, 13, announced Monday that she was ‘jealous’ of the 15-year-old Holocaust victim. “Biebs went to her house? So unfair,” said the diehard ‘Belieber’ of the persecuted Jewish teen who, after hiding from the Nazis for two years in a cramped attic, died of typhus in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp just weeks before its liberation. “What makes her so special that she gets a shout out? I retweet him every day and he mentions her by name and calls her a ‘great girl?’ Ugh.” McNeal went on to say that she was so envious of Frank that she wanted to “literally die,” adding that “some girls just have all the luck.”
|by Anonymous||reply 282||04/15/2013|
His message trivializes Anne Frank, both the person she was & the symbol she's become. He probably didn't intend to do that, since he doesn't seem to be much of a deep thinker -- more likely he just wrote the first thing on his mind: neat girl, would have loved it if she was one of my fans!
He seems to have the ego of a 4 year old:
They're changing guard at Buckingham Palace - Christopher Robin went down with Alice. "Do you think the King knows all about me?"
|by Anonymous||reply 283||04/15/2013|
283. That was Perfect! I could see him watching the Hindenburg crash and yelling "Oh The Humabelibermanity!"
|by Anonymous||reply 284||04/15/2013|
Surely there's a cliff that this nasty, illiterate, drugged up little slutboy can drive off of in one of his over-priced cars.
It's not as if he's useful or desirable in any way. The tween girls will cry for a minute, tweet their tragical tweets and immediately turn to their next teen idol.
This Beiber cunt has got to go.

So which Hollywood stars did Anne Frank have hanging on her walls?
I read a censored diary passage about a lesbian crush she had on a friend. Something about wanting to touch and kiss her. Her dad removed it before publication.
|by Anonymous||reply 286||04/15/2013|
So heartwarming to see the little lesbian at the museum in his ghetto outfit complete with hoodie!
|by Anonymous||reply 287||04/15/2013|
So which Hollywood stars did Anne Frank have hanging on her walls?
Robert Stack ("Unsolved Mysteries") and Oscar-nominated for WRITTEN IN THE WIND.
One fan apparently was Anne Frank, the Jewish girl whose family hid from the Nazis in an Amsterdam house for 25 months before they were captured in World War II. Friend and longtime Hollywood publicist Warren Cowan recalled Stack's pleasure when he was told that Cowan had seen a publicity photo of the actor in Frank's preserved home.
|by Anonymous||reply 288||04/15/2013|
While tactless, Anne Frank wanted to be a normal teen more than anything than to have to go through the hell she had to go through
|by Anonymous||reply 289||04/15/2013|
I think r283 is correct. It was the first thing on his mind but it shows were his ego is at.
|by Anonymous||reply 290||04/15/2013|
This is from Dlisted. Pretty funny...and accurate:
In "fuckery you just can't make up" news, Justin Bieber and some of his friends visited the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam last night and not only did the shit-brained fetus keep his sunglasses on in the museum, but he also vomited up pieces of his ego all over the museum's guestbook. After learning that Anne Frank hid in the attic for two years and was eventually captured by the Nazis and died in a concentration camp, the only question the Biebs asked was, "I wonder if she would've been a Belieber?" Out of everything, that's what he got out of the Anne Frank Museum. I just.... I don't.... I mean... I CAN'T!
The Anne Frank Museum Facebook page posted a transcription of what Justin Bieber wrote and it's the reason why humanity cries today:
Yesterday night Justin Bieber visited the Anne Frank House, together with his friends and guards. Fans were waiting outside to see a glimpse of him. He stayed more than an hour in the museum. In our guestbook he wrote: "Truly inspiring to be able to come here. Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a belieber." Tonight Bieber will give a concert in Arnhem in the Netherlands.
Please, everybody knows that Anne Frank would've been a One Direction fan.
Another sad part of this is that the Beliebers probably don't even know who Anne Frank is and they're going to start sending her death threats on Twitter, because he gave her a shout out instead of them.
And Justin Bieber accomplished the impossible by managing to out-Bieber himself.

Anne's stepsister defend Beiber
To Anne Frank's stepsister, Eva Schloss, the furor over Justin Bieber and a remark he left in the guestbook of the Anne Frank House is "childish."
Schloss, a Holocaust survivor who's written a recently released autobiography called "After Auschwitz," told the U.K.'s Telegraph that she agrees Frank might've been a fan of the teen pop star, as Bieber controversially suggested last Friday.
"Truly inspiring to be able to come here. Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a belieber," the 19-year-old singer penned in the Anne Frank House's guestbook, sparking an outpouring of backlash across the Web and beyond.
Critics, like commentator Dean Obeidallah, shook their heads at Bieber for being "self-obsessed" and narcissistic, seemingly taking little away from learning about the life and legacy of the young diarist, who died as a teen in a Nazi concentration camp in 1945.
But a few others came to Bieber's defense. Had Frank been born 70 years later, said one rabbi who's closely studied Frank's life, she would have likely been a "belieber," as Biebs' fans are called. Schloss, who was friendly with Frank while coming of age in Amsterdam and later became the step-daughter of Frank's father, Otto, agrees.
“She probably would have been a fan. Why not?" Schloss told the Telegraph. "He’s a young man and she was a young girl, and she liked film stars and music. They make a lot of fuss about everything that is connected with Anne Frank.”
