I've read several stories, and there's that Youtube video of his and James Deen's "East of Eden" screentest where they are obviously flirty with one another.
So, was Paul Newman gay or what?

By all accounts, Paul Newman was NOT gay. I know a lot of people WISH he'd been gay, but the simple fact was that he wasn't.
He did have a great sense of humor, which is why he could amiably joke with James Dean, who obviously was trying to make him uncomfortable. I guess he considered Newman competition for the same type of roles, and of course he was.
|by Anonymous||reply 7||April 14, 2013 1:19 AM|
Also, James Dean wore coke bottle glasses. He was super blind. He can't see Paul Newman which gives their interaction an interesting vibe.
|by Anonymous||reply 8||April 14, 2013 1:25 AM|
Just imagine if porn actor James Deen could travel back in time and make a screen test with a young Paul Newman...
|by Anonymous||reply 9||April 14, 2013 3:19 AM|
Newman was an actor. They're a separate sexual category.
I always wondered if he and Woodward had a threeway with Gore Vidal.
|by Anonymous||reply 10||April 14, 2013 3:23 AM|
R9 I don't care how big his dick is James Deen is just not hot. He looks like Alfred E. Newman to me.
|by Anonymous||reply 11||April 14, 2013 3:29 AM|
In the other thread about gay/bi/closeted stars who have done an incredible job of hiding their sexuality, there was a fair amount of "I got it from a very good source" gossip about Newman, and I came away believing that he was truly bi. I don't know if he was the epitome of it, though.
There are truly bisexual men. I'm fucking one now. I hate it when he sends pictures of his erect cock next to an image on his laptop screen of a girl riding some dude's cock.
|by Anonymous||reply 12||April 14, 2013 4:12 AM|
He was very close pals with Gore Vidal - who was of course once briefly engaged to Joanne - did Gore ever put the make on Paul ? there's that photo of them fonding a greek statue on some greek island ... ?

"He did have a great sense of humor, which is why he could amiably joke with James Dean, who obviously was trying to make him uncomfortable. I guess he considered Newman competition for the same type of roles, and of course he was."
Of course he wasn't. They were two very different types. Newman would never have been cast in any of the three roles Dean did on film, Dean was completely wrong for almost every role Newman did on film.
It isn't just the six years between them, Dean was a unique mix of innocent and rebel, and got roles which called out for that. Newman was a much more typical leading man with a great deal more maturity of voice, style and bearing, his tenderness came through in a completely different way when he was playing a conventional characters, his sexuality came through in a very different way when playing commanding studs. There are light years between them.
|by Anonymous||reply 15||April 14, 2013 2:54 PM|
Paul was big on gay rights, gay marriage even.
Shame there wasn't a gay role in his ouevre (was there?).
As someone else said his work was filled with mildly homoerotic imagery. Having those perfect godlike looks was something of a curse as he wasn't able to be taken seriously as an actor a lot of the time and was often made to go shirtless.
There were the Tennessee Williams works like his involvement in The Glass Menagerie. The most directly gay thing I've saw was a character made a pass at him in prison in The Mackintosh Man.
|by Anonymous||reply 16||April 14, 2013 3:16 PM|
Oh, R7...(giggles)...you're so innocent.
Newman was bi. He was deeply in love with his wife Joanne and deeply devoted to his family yet compartmentalized his sexuality to include trysts with hotel managers, crew guys and sometimes actors while on location. And yes, Tom Cruise was one of them when they were shooting The Color of Money. And Newman dropped him like a hot potato as soon as the movie was finished so he could resume his family life in Connecticut. That's the deal he'd made with Joanne and he always stuck by it.
|by Anonymous||reply 17||April 14, 2013 3:40 PM|
Paul Newman strayed from his marriage with women, never men. Except at the Datalounge.
|by Anonymous||reply 18||April 14, 2013 3:46 PM|
R15, of course, Dean saw Newman as competition. They were both young, goodlooking New York actors who trained at the Actors Studio, and they would run into each other at the same cattle calls and callbacks for parts on Broadway and live television. When Dean died, Newman took over the roles meant for Dean in "Somebody Up There Likes Me" and "The Left Handed Gun." Had Dean lived and matured, I could easily picture him playing Newman's parts in "The Hustler," "Sweet Bird of Youth," "Hud," "Cool Hand Luke," and "Butch Cassidy." All those roles have that rebel spirit that was Dean's forte.

R13, Paul & Joanne and Gore & Howard Austen all lived together in a beach house in Malibu in the mid to late '50s. Can you imagine a single gal living with her current beau (who had left his wife and kids for her), and her ex-fiance and his partner all in one happy home in those days? Scandalous. Whatever was happening in that home, Paul didn't seem to mind sharing it with a gay couple. Very forward thinking in those days.

Was Joanna gay/bi herself then?
Of the *rumours* I'd read (widely available as "paul newman gay" used to come up on google and there was a trash gossip book that claimed it), I don't believe he and Robert Wagner were an item. He could do a lot better than Wagner couldn't he? (Wagner of course was linked to Christopher Walken in that case of the tragic Natalie Wood :( Thankfully that has been re-opened, fascinating stuff.)
The one I liked the most was Steve McQueen forced Paul to "be the woman". Good call, Steve, I would insist on that too.
Brando claimed in his autobiography he and James Dean had an affair(?). And that would have surfaced before the screen test footage was released I suppose, backing it up.
I'd like to know what was said when the sound cuts out of the screen test. It did sound for a moment that Paul was using the smokes to mask a bit of gay voice but I'm reaching there, it's just voice inflection. James probably was trying to make him uncomfortable but no doubt he wanted to fuck him as well.
Won't believe he was gay, too good to be true. If he had any slight leanings, like others he would have free reign to explore them and experiment at the top of Hollywood. Wonder if the casting couch was ever used, that seems the likeliest.

These can't have all have been Towering Inferno hook-ups can they? Wagner was hilarious in that.
Actually I take it back, Song In My Heart pre-dates Paul's work and goes back to 1952. He aged well then. Was Wagner always B List?

Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward loved one another deeply, and it was a real marriage. However, both were bisexual but leaned toward the homo end of things. They created an estate where they lived near one another in separate homes. Joanne lived with a woman (a long-term relationship), and Paul slept with a regular succession of men, generally younger men with whom he worked on different movies, and when the movie wrapped, so did the relationship.
I don't know if he actually slept with James Dean; Dean slept with men for money, but I don't know what his true orientation was. I do know that Newman slept with Tom Cruise during The Color of Money, and broke Cruise's heart because he had believed it was a "real" relationship, and Newman dismissed him with a "See you later, it's been fun" kind of send-off. This experience affected Cruise profoundly, and he became much more cynical and controlling afterward.

"Of course he wasn't. They were two very different types. Newman would never have been cast in any of the three roles Dean did on film, Dean was completely wrong for almost every role Newman did on film."
Really? Well, here's what one critic had to say:
"Ironically, after having a disastrous Big Screen debut with The Silver Chalice (on the set of which, James Dean, visiting Newman, would meet the love of his life, Pier Angeli, Newman's co-star), Paul Newman inherited two of the roles that established his career from Dean. Jimmy Dean had been scheduled to appear on live TV in an adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's story, with a teleplay by A.E. Hotchner (who later would become the actor's partner in the charitable endeavor Newman's Own line of food products) in mid-October 1955. He died on September 20, 1955, in a car crash on a lonely stretch of highway in California.
Paul Newman took over the role, and was a success. That lead to his being cast as the boxer Rocky Graziano in Robert Wise's film Somebody Up There Likes Me, which had been slated to be James Dean's next film, after Giant.
If James Dean had lived, he, Newman and Steve McQueen likely would have competed for the same roles, with the cream of the crop going to Dean. It is likely that, had he lived, James Dean would have been cast as Brick in Richard Brooks' 1958 film adaptation of Tennessee Williams Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, the movie that brought Newman his first Oscar nomination and movie stardom. Other roles, such as Fast Eddie Felson in The Hustler (1961) or the eponymous Hud (1963) - two roles that established Paul Newman not just as a superstar, but as a legend - might have gone to James Dean."

My thing is, if Cruise was so heartbroken and thought that it was a genuine relationship with Newman, would he have come out of the closet? He seems so anti-being-called-gay these days that a Tom Cruise being heartbroken by a man seems way out in left field.
|by Anonymous||reply 39||April 14, 2013 9:13 PM|
"You're right about McQueen, Brando, and Dean. You're WAY off about Newman."
There's never been any substantiated evidence to prove that Paul Newman was gay, just a lot of unfounded gossip and wishful thinking. I can understand why it would be so important for gays to want Newman to be gay. He was an impossibly good-looking, talented, desirable actor; how could someone like that NOT be gay? How could he NOT love cock? I imagine a lot of gay cocks got hard just thinking about Paul Newman enjoying sex with other men. But that doesn't make him gay, nor does endless gossip and speculation.
|by Anonymous||reply 40||April 14, 2013 10:55 PM|

I read John Gilmore's biography Laid Bare (wherein he talks about sucking and gagging on James Dean's enormous cock).
Gilmore knew McQueen in New York and describes him as a total asshole. Apparently, one of the things that drove McQueen crazy was the actors in NYC back then knew how many dicks he'd sucked to get roles.
Gilmore, who claims to be straight, admits that he blew and got fucked by agents and producers to get work.

I have a small tidbit to throw in here. In the early '80s when I first moved to LA, my friend I was staying with had a female friend who was working on a Newman film and he made the moves on her. She was fairly young and I guess not interested (is how I heard it). He was about 55-56 at the time. At the time Newman's reputation in the MSM was very saintly--all Paul and Joanne all the time, so, naively, I was a bit shocked (DL had not been discovered yet LOL).

Even though he adored Joanne I'm sure he had meaningless flings with women while away on sets. At least he had the decorum to be discreet.

What's the story about James Dean and Pier Angeli?
I've always heard he loved her deeply but her mother forced her to marry some else.
Dean parked his car across from the church and cried while the wedding was going on.
Why did her mother put the kibosh on Dean and Pier? I'd think most mothers would be thrilled some movie star was besotted with her daughter and vis a versa.

The James Dean/Pier Angeli romance was really trumped up...by Pier Angeli. To the end of her days she insisted that Dean was her true love and that their tragic romance was like that of Romeo and Juliet. Actually, they only dated for a few weeks. And as far as anyone knows, James Dean never really fell in love with anybody, male or female. He was a "dabbler", as one close friend of his said. He'd just go from one thing to the next, and that included relationships.
Pier Angeli was quite mentally disturbed. Her great love affair with James Dean was a figment of her imagination. She ended up committing suicide.

I did a google search on Pier and Dean.
They weren't just together a few weeks. The quotes from people on both sides talked about how crazy they were for each other.
They spent loads of time together away from prying eyes.
Dean even believed her first child was his. One of his friends was quoted how devastated he was by the marriage. How Dean was sobbing uncontrollably in his arms after Dean came home from the service.
Pier's left a note after she died that was incredibly sad.
|by Anonymous||reply 74||March 17, 2015 2:52 AM|

The James Dean/Pier Angeli romance is one of the legends of James Dean. And that's all it is: a legend. It makes a good story. But it was made out to be a lot more than it was, and Angeli never shut up about it. Her association of Dean is only reason anybody knows who she is.
Of course there would be "tons of photos" of them. It was great publicity. But I've noticed than in all the pictures of them Pier seems pleased as punch (she's usually grinning) and Dean seems VERY uncomfortable.
I think R74 will believe anything he sees on the internet. But there is a LOT of bullshit about James Dean and his tragic romance with Pier Angeli is pure Hollywood hokum.

Who's this "childhood best friend?" And he once ran Dean's "memorial museum?" If this actually happened, and I doubt it did, then this "childhood friend" was probably just trying the perpetuate one of the most well-known James Dean myths: the hoary tale of how poor James Dean was crushed because his One True Love, Pier Angeli, married somebody else.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned that story about how Dean drove his motorcycle to the church where Angeli was getting married and gunned his motor while the nuptials were taking place. That story has been around for decades, but has, of course, never been substantiated.

As I have posted many times on the DL, my partner knew the Newman family very well for years. He insists Paul and Joanne were a real couple - totally boring and average really. Their two families were close. Anyway he finds speculation about Joanne being a dyke and Paul gay or bi funny - even silly. We like good Hollywood stories ourselves and he has many to tell. Brando said this about Paul
Brando’s most famous comment about his sexuality was not about himself, but it was a claim that Paul Newman was also a bisexual. In a book about Newman that came out in 2009, Brando says, “He never fooled me. Paul Newman had just as many on-location affairs as the rest of us, and he was just as bisexual as I was. But, where I was always getting caught with my pants down, he managed to do it in the dark.” A previous biography about Brando revealed a photograph of him engaging in oral sex with another man.
How come no one saw this before ?

Lucky Joanne Woodward!

It would be great if someone could write a book about Newman, Brando, Clift, Dean and McQueen. To compare their lifestyle and their career choices.

He was narcissistic,(even thought he was trying constantly to downplay that with humor and intelligence) so i guess there was definitely a gay side ih him.

R95 That picture of Ms Stipe screams gay not bi. Ms Stipe should be wearing a caftan in public now he's so gay.

Newman has been long rumored to have sexual affairs with younger men he befriended on his acting gigs. Sal Mineo, Brandon Dewilde and Tom Cruise are just some of them. Most of these affairs ended when the filming ended, some continued on and off. He always returned to his wife and him afterwards.

I wonder if Joanne knew something about it, R102.

Oh God, that is SO hot if it's true. There was a real,palpable sexual chemistry between the two in "Hud". Just the thought of Newman lowering himself onto De Wilde and sliding his thick,hard..... um, excuse me, I have to go now, s- something just came up!

More on Newman and Brando: Brando later boasted, “I f*cked the kid in all known positions. He even inspired me to some new ones. The kid even resembles me. It was as if I was f*cking my younger self, even though he’s just a few years younger than me. Of course, by the time he got on that train back to Ohio, he’d fallen madly in love with me.”

You never had his eyes Marlon, even when you were younger and you grew up fat even from much too soon. You were even young when you started to become chubby.

I never found Newman all that hot. James Dean is another story. Sex appeal for days, right up until his death.
|by Anonymous||reply 110||May 27, 2016 5:36 PM|
R110, Paul was not as sexy as Dean, but he was more beautiful than him.
|by Anonymous||reply 111||May 27, 2016 5:45 PM|
^^^^James Dean was 24 years old when he died. Does sex appeal usually stop at 23?

I've met him. He was a nice man. I guess that's why people wanted him to be gay. But he wasn't. He was wickedly funny and down to earth. He gave a shit about the less fortunate and did something about it.
|by Anonymous||reply 113||May 27, 2016 6:04 PM|
R113, you are wrong. People talk about him being gay, because of his body language and his obsession with the theme of homosexuality in 'Rachel, Rachel' and in 'Sometimes a Great Notion', both of which are movies that Paul directed.
It's also interesting that Paul stated on many occasions that he had more fun making 'Slap Shots' than on any other film he has starred in, and that it remains his favorite of his own films. 'Slap Shots' by the way is a movie with certain gay vibes!

Newman also showed interest in producing and acting in an adaptation of the gay novel "The Front Runner". I'd love to know the entire back story on that -- how far Newman actually got into securing rights, possible actors for the roles, why the project failed, etc.

Oh, and Tom DeLay was a corrupt congressman.

[Paul was big on gay rights, gay marriage even. Shame there wasn't a gay role in his ouevre (was there?).]
Am I just too simple to consider Brick gay, in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof?
|by Anonymous||reply 123||May 28, 2016 10:08 PM|
R114, in Slapshot Newman's character tells the owner of the team that she needs to keep an eye on his pre-teen son who could "have a cock in his mouth before you can sat cock robin." And the script was written by a woman.

Is there anyone who seriously argues Brick was straight? That ending -- oh, hey, Maggie, I'm ready to knock you up now -- is about as believable as Liberace's crush on Sonia.

R124, there is also a scene in which Paul's character falls upon a naked man in the locker room and you can see briefly, at that moment embarrassment and desire in his eyes. It's a very fleeting moment, but it's very obvious.
