As a leader, is it better to be loved or feared?

I think this is from the Machivelli school of thought.

Loved by the people, feared by the enemies of your people (including the plutocrats and mandarins inside your own nation).

Feared. I had the worst reputation, deserved or not, as being a Dragon Lady at my place of work but I got results. My unit was considered the best managed and the standard for excellence. I could be harsh but often kept the people I supervised from making mistakes that would have cost them their jobs. The people who were loved were often ineffectual as managers and were the first to be thrown under the bus by the peons when anything went wrong.

It depends what you are leading.

Seeing how the ones who are feared usually end up being killed by their own people, I'm going to go with loved.

You say that like it's a bad thing, r6.

I want people to fear how much they love me

Love and fear are different sides of the same coin.

Any true leader understands this.

Depends on what you are leading.

OP, are you the AT&T commercial guy who asks those silly questions to first graders and NBA Hall of Famers?

You sound like him.

As Chazz Palmenteri said, "feahed."
