What's the fugliest fashion/beauty trend of the past 50 or so years?

I nominate "bedazzled" clothing

1st runner-up: polyester leisure suits

2nd runner up: 80s Mall hair

by Anonymousreply 6904/04/2013

The street thug look, baggy pants and sneakers.

by Anonymousreply 104/03/2013

by Anonymousreply 204/03/2013

by Anonymousreply 304/03/2013

Jeans that are so tight they cannot be pulled up over the butt, so they are worn below the ass so that your underwear is entirely exposed.

by Anonymousreply 404/03/2013

I nominate obese offspring of famous athletes wearing faux fur, carrying a purse on bent arm...

by Anonymousreply 504/03/2013

thug and bro

by Anonymousreply 604/03/2013

hair extensions

by Anonymousreply 704/03/2013

by Anonymousreply 804/03/2013

Big fake breasts.

by Anonymousreply 904/03/2013

by Anonymousreply 1004/03/2013

White women with inflated injected lips

by Anonymousreply 1104/03/2013

Long, fake nails

by Anonymousreply 1204/03/2013

My top 3.

Inflated lips.

Wearing super tight tee shirts stretched over pregnant bellies instead of a nice maternity top.

by Anonymousreply 1304/03/2013

Tattoos. And I can't believe I'm the first person to give that answer.

by Anonymousreply 1404/03/2013

Skin tight Juicy Couture stretchy drawstring pants worn over fat asses, accompanied by huge ugly suede 'Uggs' and peachy/coral lipstick.

by Anonymousreply 1504/03/2013

When was obesity a fashion/beauty trend?

by Anonymousreply 1604/03/2013

It's a trend R16. Let's just go with that.

by Anonymousreply 1704/03/2013

Piercings, especially on the face.

by Anonymousreply 1804/03/2013

Acid-washed denim with big frizzy permed hair circa 1989.

by Anonymousreply 1904/03/2013

The ghetto fabulous "trend"

by Anonymousreply 2004/03/2013

Another awful '80s trend: mens' acrylic sweaters in garish "color blocks" (think Cliff Huxtable)

by Anonymousreply 2104/03/2013

by Anonymousreply 2204/03/2013

Not necessarily a trend but women whose toes hang over the front edge of their shoes.

Ladies, if that happens it means your shoes are too small.

by Anonymousreply 2304/03/2013

I'd agree that tattoos are the worst, especially on very young people like Harry Styles who have disfigured their bodies.

On a more easily correctable note, I'm not crazy about ombre hair. It looks like you're badly in need of a touch-up or a tint-back. So odd that L'Oreal has introduced an ombre kit now that it's no longer trendy.

by Anonymousreply 2404/03/2013

This look. It takes a great butt to pull it off (and even then...)

by Anonymousreply 2504/03/2013

Rat tails.

by Anonymousreply 2604/03/2013

1987-1995 were the ugliest years for hair and fashion.

by Anonymousreply 2704/03/2013

See link.

by Anonymousreply 2804/03/2013

Gold chains worn outside of a turtleneck on a man. Braided leather belts that are too big so a long piece hangs down. That's late 80's I guess.

I think huge afros were pretty fugly on 70's black men, yet outrageously sexy on black women.

by Anonymousreply 2904/03/2013

[quote]Jeans that are so tight they cannot be pulled up over the butt, so they are worn below the ass so that your underwear is entirely exposed.

That look is because the pants are too loose, not too tight.

And I agree baggy pants are the worst look. It looks like a toddler dressed you.

by Anonymousreply 3004/03/2013

tattoos. that was easy.

by Anonymousreply 3104/03/2013

Hunter boots...

by Anonymousreply 3204/03/2013

Flares were pretty darned ugly, denim flares even worse.

by Anonymousreply 3304/03/2013

I've finally had to begin lying to sex partners that I have a fully clothed fetish because tattoos were such a boner killer.

by Anonymousreply 3404/03/2013

Nehru jackets

Leisure suits

Qiana polyester shirts

Platform shoes for men

Wide ties

Big hair

by Anonymousreply 3504/03/2013

Mohawks were ridiculous but fauxhawks don't even have the courage to be bold.

by Anonymousreply 3604/03/2013

I love Nehru jackets and platform shoes

by Anonymousreply 3704/03/2013

I stopped wearing platform shoes in 1973, and went back to Topsiders. If only I could take back the fashion mistakes of 1967-1974.

by Anonymousreply 3804/03/2013

"White women with inflated injected lips"

The official term is "trout pout"

by Anonymousreply 3904/03/2013

by Anonymousreply 4004/03/2013

I do hate hipster nautical, with the moustaches and striped shirts. Theme park bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 4104/03/2013

Ankle-hugging super skinny jeans on men, please GO AWAY!

reply 22 Ya!

by Anonymousreply 4204/03/2013

Baggy jeans

The prairie dress that Midwest Christian hausfraus seem to favor

by Anonymousreply 4304/03/2013

acid wash

by Anonymousreply 4404/03/2013

Botox and fillers.

"grills" on teeth.

Shirt-tail out with sweater or jacket over.

Pyramid perms.

The mullet hair and dress.

Colored leather clothing.

Long hair on older women.

Band t-shirts.

Spray tans.

by Anonymousreply 4504/03/2013

Everyone wearing black ALL THE TIME, especially casually. But also evening wear. It was probably elegant once, in small doses.

Also the very baggy jeans with the underwear showing and the rest of the shit that goes with that look.

50 years? The last 15 years is all we need for this topic.

...& to think people today, snigger at the '70s.

by Anonymousreply 4604/03/2013

The '70s had their own very ugly clothing, R46. No better, maybe worse.

by Anonymousreply 4704/03/2013

Those horrible platform shoes which make feet look like horse hooves.

This style is particularly ugly on short women with stumpy legs. They look grotesque. This style is more suited to an S&M outfit, than everyday wear.

Fashionistas are obessesed with anything which is 'different', no matter how painful the style is to wear, they will suffer to be different.

Here's a variation on the animal hooves look.

by Anonymousreply 4804/03/2013

Socks with toes, especially in rainbow colors.

by Anonymousreply 4904/03/2013

R49's is hilarious.

Hot pants & platform shoes...together.

by Anonymousreply 5004/03/2013

Afghan coats.

by Anonymousreply 5104/03/2013

track suits as street wear, granny track suits, velour track suits

maxi skirts

plaid trousers - watch [italic]Slap Shot[/italic] if you want to see this ugly 70s trend

by Anonymousreply 5204/03/2013

The 70s had far fewer fashion crimes than the 80s or today.

And grunge was not that bad, come on. Loose flannel? Combat boots? Big deal. It still doesn't look that bad today.

And band t-shirts? You got a problem with band t-shirts? Fuck off and die, prisspot @ R45. Some days I wanna show some love for Thin Lizzy, and I don't give a fuck what you think.

by Anonymousreply 5304/03/2013

I thought most fashions-both male and female-were pretty shitty from 1971 to '75. Remember shag haircuts? I remember the polyester look was from that timIe period, I had to get a polyester suit for a cousin's wedding.

by Anonymousreply 5404/03/2013

I love my platform heels. So sue me. I wear them with my white girl 'fro.

Cannot STAND that stupid pants on the ground idiocy. When will that trend just DIE?

by Anonymousreply 5504/03/2013

Fashion Police

by Anonymousreply 5604/03/2013

Thanks, R28. Glad that the contents of my stomach consist of of a solitary slice of toast. Someone should tell the sci-fi geeks that the four-breasted intergalactic visitors they fantasize about have arrived.

Since I'm a geezer, I offer up this smorgasbord of warmed-over 70s fashion horrors.

by Anonymousreply 5704/03/2013

by Anonymousreply 5804/03/2013

Caeser haircuts on men with super tight, lycra blend t-shirts a la Simon Cowell in clubs. (90's)

Leggings worn as pants. Camel toe city, I don't care how skinny you are.

The mullet is the worst haircut ever created.

Frosted hair.

Acid Washed jeans.

Skinny jeans.

Headbands a la Olivia Newton John.

Polyester anything.

Pucci rip off designs.

by Anonymousreply 5904/03/2013

Yoga pants on fraus. That's a recent one.

by Anonymousreply 6004/03/2013

can't stand the modern rockabilly look. gross.

by Anonymousreply 6204/03/2013

[quote}& to think people today, snigger at the '70s.

Gee, I wonder why?

by Anonymousreply 6304/03/2013

More 70s horror!

by Anonymousreply 6404/03/2013

Am I the only one who thinks contemporary "cutaway" men's suits are an abomination? Given how slowly these things evolve, and my age, I may never own a new suit again. I cringe every time a man moves his arms and the bottom of his tie pops out to say hello.

by Anonymousreply 6504/03/2013

weightlifting, tanning, tattooing

by Anonymousreply 6604/04/2013

This goes back a little more than 50 years, but Mamie Eisenhower bangs were a hideous look from the 50s and early 60s. You see a lot of girls with this look in old yearbooks - it makes even pretty girls look frumpy as hell.

The HUGE bouffants from the 60s were another unflattering look.

The muttonchop sideburns of the late 60s and 70s also made people look fug

by Anonymousreply 6704/04/2013

by Anonymousreply 6804/04/2013

Speaking of the People of Walmart pic, why are women wearing too small pants now? I've also noticed that jeans now have waistlines that sit low instead of at the natural waist which you cannot wear well unless you are very thin.
