Sen. Rob Portmaan was surprised to learn his son is gay
Will Portman wrote in a column for his college newspaper Monday that he came out to his parents in a letter that he wrote in a campus library and sent to them by overnight mail.
Perhaps his father was surprised to receive the news by letter, but was he really surprised by the actual news? Don't most parents have some sort of inkling that their kid is gay?

It's rare that a parent would be surprised to learn his/her kid is gay. They know. They may not want to know. But they know.

Yeah, he was surprised because he thought Will was straight when they'd hook up in the bathhouse.

Being a career politician, he might not have known. The reason: he probably never saw the kid growing up, but was away on business.
