I have never watched it. What am I missing besides that redheaded chick's big tits? Was being an ad man a big deal back then? I remember Darin Stephens on Bewitched being a ad man too.
|by Anonymous||reply 62||04/08/2013|
There are some parallels between Bewitched and Mad Men.
It's a show about the 60s and the changing mores. It's a show about the ad business. It's a show about a man struggling to keep it together.
Watch it. It's excellent.

From the intelligence you've displayed in your post, OP, I think it's safe to say you're better off with TV shows on Nickelodeon and the Cartoon Network.
|by Anonymous||reply 2||03/25/2013|
Sociopathic handsome man-whore advertising excutive a twisted character I enjoy the show.
|by Anonymous||reply 3||03/25/2013|
OP, I came "late to the party" with Mad Men. SPent first 3 seasons watching programming on other stations at 9:00 on Sunday: Apprentice, THe Next FOod Network Star, etc. (dear God.)
By the time I really started watching Mad Men: Wow. Just, wow. It's unlike most other TV shows. I think the first 3 seasons were the best (I have seen almost all of it on reruns on Sun 6:00 AM (yes, I have no life) and On Demand. I probably like the first 3 seasons the best 'cause they were the early part of the 60's, more like the 50's.
(I realized to my horror a couple of months ago that I am probably exactly the age of "Sally"! I remember the dresses in school, etc. My parents were nothing like Don and Betsy, though (I grew up relatively poor).
THe writing, directing and acting are, IMHO , superb. It's like no other show. Of course, this is all a matter of taste.
I hope, OP, that you keep watching!
|by Anonymous||reply 4||03/25/2013|
OP is a troll or a on a phishing expedition, either way ... nausea ensues. Maybe OP is just plain stupid as has been suggested.
|by Anonymous||reply 5||03/25/2013|
If you watch it, start from the beginning.
|by Anonymous||reply 6||03/25/2013|
So asking about Mad Men makes someone a troll now? I've just never watched it.
|by Anonymous||reply 7||03/25/2013|
Ad men are amazing!
|by Anonymous||reply 8||03/25/2013|
Mad Men = total bullshit, but entertaining.
|by Anonymous||reply 9||03/25/2013|
R4, how much can you actually love the show when you named Don's ex-wife "Betsy"?
|by Anonymous||reply 10||03/25/2013|
I've watched about 3 episodes and for some reason I can't get into it. I was disappointed.
|by Anonymous||reply 11||03/25/2013|
I love Mad Men but more for the female characters, especially Peggy. I completely identify with her character. She's an outsider trying to make it in a straight male world. I know. Mary!
|by Anonymous||reply 12||03/25/2013|
R10 - Her name is Betty.
|by Anonymous||reply 13||03/25/2013|
Duh! Tell that to R4.
|by Anonymous||reply 14||03/25/2013|
|by Anonymous||reply 15||03/25/2013|
Being an "Ad Man" really was a big deal in that era.
Media manipulation of the public was a brand new thing, and advertising was thought of a field that was fashionable, creative, artistic, scientific, and powerful. It was the glamour profession of the era, really.
|by Anonymous||reply 16||03/25/2013|
Highly overrated, overpraised, pretentious shit that allows pseudointellectual viewers to think they're superior to those who don't watch.
|by Anonymous||reply 17||03/25/2013|
This scene sold me on it.
|by Anonymous||reply 18||03/25/2013|
The only thing that would have made it better would be if they were drinking highballs instead of coffee.
|by Anonymous||reply 19||03/25/2013|
It's NOT pronounced "Mad MEN."
It's pronounced, as the British would, "MADmun."
|by Anonymous||reply 20||03/25/2013|
The scene in the pilot that sold it for me was Don having dinner with Rachel wherein Rachel figures Don out.
|by Anonymous||reply 21||03/26/2013|
|by Anonymous||reply 22||03/26/2013|
It's too late for you.
|by Anonymous||reply 23||03/26/2013|
R20 is the ghost of Lane Pyrce.
|by Anonymous||reply 24||03/26/2013|
R4 here. I apologize for making a mistake and saying, "Betsy." I realize most of the time she is called "Betty." I DO remember a few times, though, when Don has said, "Bets". But I do apologize; I'm very much a grammar queen. Sorry.
|by Anonymous||reply 25||03/26/2013|
I love this show and many times it's like seeing scenes from my life, my broken home. I've cried after watching a lot of the episodes.
|by Anonymous||reply 26||03/26/2013|
Show is like watching paint dry.
|by Anonymous||reply 27||03/26/2013|
If only it were that entertaining, r27.
|by Anonymous||reply 28||03/26/2013|
R25 Don calls her Bets and Birdie.
|by Anonymous||reply 29||03/26/2013|
He started calling her "Bets" in the second season because people were apparently getting Betty confused with Peggy.
|by Anonymous||reply 30||03/26/2013|
It's a soap opera for the postmodeen age, and an entertaining one.
|by Anonymous||reply 31||03/26/2013|
I don't think so R30.
|by Anonymous||reply 32||03/26/2013|
No it was a term of endearment to her, and a private love thing between him and her, that's the reason for Betts.
|by Anonymous||reply 33||03/26/2013|
This is one of the best television shows ever made. Watch.
|by Anonymous||reply 34||03/26/2013|
Coming in late is good since the first 3 seasons sucked.
|by Anonymous||reply 35||03/26/2013|
It's such a great program---I can't wait for its return!
|by Anonymous||reply 36||03/26/2013|
Season six cast photos at the link.
|by Anonymous||reply 37||03/26/2013|
R35 is wrong.
|by Anonymous||reply 38||03/26/2013|
I like the whole concept of Mad Men, the 1960s theme, the attention to detail etc,; however, I tried watching the show a couple of times, and it was like watching paint dry.
I'm glad that people like the show, but I have no idea how they stick with it and aren't bored silly.
|by Anonymous||reply 39||03/26/2013|
Because it's the definition of a "layered" show, R39.
|by Anonymous||reply 40||03/27/2013|
R40. What's a "layered" show?
|by Anonymous||reply 41||03/27/2013|
r33 they are missing you in Frauville.
|by Anonymous||reply 42||03/27/2013|
I can't wait for the bitter, seven page-long arguments about Norwegian Catholics in Bay Ridge, antique chairs and which one of the two episode threads posted each Sunday is going to be the OFFICIAL one.
|by Anonymous||reply 43||03/27/2013|
|by Anonymous||reply 44||04/01/2013|
[quote]What's a "layered" show?
It's a show where the plot is built with alternating layers of custard, white cake and strawberry jam.
|by Anonymous||reply 45||04/01/2013|
Did someone say jam?
|by Anonymous||reply 46||04/01/2013|
[quote]By the time I really started watching Mad Men: Wow. Just, wow
i enjoy Mad Men, but I'm sorry I have to share that enjoyment with a dopey drip who says "Wow. Just wow."
|by Anonymous||reply 47||04/01/2013|
Tonight's the night! Season Premiere Two hours.
Don and his VPL
Megan and her teefs
Roger and his barbs
Peggy and her sophisticated (on going) make over
Robert Morse and his argyle socks
Joanie and her full figured form
Betty and her lifeless line readings.
oh, and Stan's ass!
|by Anonymous||reply 48||04/07/2013|
Will Mother Francis return tonight?
|by Anonymous||reply 49||04/07/2013|
Who were those kids? And why is January Jones wearing a fat suit?
|by Anonymous||reply 50||04/07/2013|
What just happened? Was it some alternative universe thing? One moment the doorman is dying and the next he isn't?
|by Anonymous||reply 51||04/07/2013|
I hope Carla returns.
|by Anonymous||reply 52||04/07/2013|
I'm already confused.
|by Anonymous||reply 53||04/07/2013|
There are two Mad Men threads. I am confused.
|by Anonymous||reply 54||04/07/2013|
Jesus Christ, Betty! Is she psychotic?
|by Anonymous||reply 55||04/07/2013|
To my "Race and Gisele fan from the Amazing Race thread" from the other possible Mad Men thread.
Sending you Pepto-Bismol kisses.
|by Anonymous||reply 56||04/07/2013|
Back at ya Gisele.
|by Anonymous||reply 57||04/07/2013|
I must be the only gay guy on America that hates this show. I suffered through the first 2 seasons and finally said enough,
Give me breaking bad or walking dead any day. He'll eve nip and tuck was better than this piece of dreck.
Yes I know I'm in the minority.
|by Anonymous||reply 58||04/07/2013|
Everyone seems to be posting on the other Mad Men thread.
|by Anonymous||reply 59||04/07/2013|
R59, that's because the other Mad men thread is about the episode.
|by Anonymous||reply 60||04/07/2013|
R50 Because Betty is fat.
|by Anonymous||reply 61||04/07/2013|
[quote] I suffered through the first 2 seasons and finally said enough,
Why didn't you just not watch if you were suffering? Two whole seasons?
|by Anonymous||reply 62||04/08/2013|
