Dear Gays: Republicans Still Hate You, Just More Quietly

From article-

My feeling on it is this: despite the fact that folks like Jon Huntsman have come out for marriage equality, the party as a whole is still bigoted against LGBT Americans, and they have an obvious intent to remain so. No matter how you twist it and turn it, if you vote GOP, you vote against LGBT rights. This new, but not surprising, information just makes the term “Gay Republican” even more repulsive in my view.

I suppose you could say that the Republicans are now where the Democrats were 25 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 103/19/2013

Not true, R1. The Dems did not hate us 25 years ago the way the Rethugs have and continue to. The Dems just wanted us to be quiet and not make such a fuss. Problematic in its own right, but nowhere near the hatred and disgust displayed by the Repukes.

This just isn't true. My father was an 80 year old Republican who never saw a Democrat he liked. He was bigoted about nearly everything his whole life. EVEN HE changed his mind about shooting down DOMA before his passing. He still didn't much care for Obama, but he came to see gay folks of both sexes as non-threatening and deserving of any and all rights afforded to all Americans. This is NOT Repub propaganda. I am a committed Socialist and loathe Republicans for many reasons...homophobia is just one of them.

The problem isn't party, it's ideology. Conservatism, in it's modern American variety, is disgusting.

by Anonymousreply 503/19/2013

They may be starting to smarten up.

by Anonymousreply 603/19/2013

Not to beat a dead horse, but I was making one of my weekly visits to Breibart's site to taunt ans annoy the uptight bastards about something unrelated to sexuality. I happened to stumble on a thread about the states which voted for legalizing gay marriage(post election). One jackhole was prattling on and on about the Biblical issues ad nauseum. The next comment simply said, "Give it up bro. We've lost this one. Get used to it."

by Anonymousreply 703/19/2013

How do you feel about it, r8?

by Anonymousreply 903/19/2013

I predict in a few years (openly) gays will have substantial influence/control within the GOP. I sense the rise of a lot of them from the midwest and south. I don't know where the anti-gays will go in reaction. Third party?

by Anonymousreply 1003/19/2013

R8 is the Stormfront Troll. Ignore him.

Now talking to the literate adults: yes, while I am sure that there are Republicans in support of gay rights, that's a moot point. Being a Republican can no longer be chalked up to simply being fiscally conservative or some such; their party has clearly worked on polarizing the electorate by exploiting social/equality issues and courting religious extreme right and bigots of all kinds for the past 35 years. As long as that is the true essence of their platform and not the economy or any constructive input pertaining to public governance, they cannot be viewed in any other light but as enemies in the fight for equality.

by Anonymousreply 1103/19/2013

The republicans have a real mess on their hands. The crazy activists who support wing-nuts such as Santorum and Paul won't go away quietly. They are ultimately the destruction of the republicans.
