South Africa cardinal says pedophilia not a crime

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - A South African cardinal who helped elect Pope Francis this week has told the BBC pedophilia is an illness and not a crime.

Cardinal Wilfrid Fox Napier, the Catholic Archbishop of Durban, told BBC Radio 5 on Saturday that pedophilia was a "disorder" that needed to be treated.

"From my experience, pedophilia is actually an illness. It's not a criminal condition, it's an illness," he said.

Napier said he knew of at least two priests who became pedophiles after they were abused as children.

"Now don't tell me that those people are criminally responsible like somebody who chooses to do something like that. I don't think you can really take the position and say that person deserves to be punished. He was himself damaged."

The Catholic Church has had its image deeply tarnished by a widespread child sex abuse scandal.

Napier was one of the 115 cardinals in the Vatican conclave that elected Pope Francis on Wednesday, the BBC reported.

The first non-European pope in nearly 1,300 years, Francis has signaled a sharp change of style from his predecessor, Benedict, for the 1.2-billion-member Church, which is beset by scandals, intrigue and strife.

He said on Saturday the church should be poor and remember that its mission is to serve the poor.

So, he's a pedophile then?

by Anonymousreply 1March 16, 2013 6:34 PM

Ephebophilia shouldn't be a crime.

by Anonymousreply 2March 16, 2013 6:38 PM

He added, "Everybody knows the only cure for AIDS is to deflower a virgin. The younger the better."

by Anonymousreply 3March 16, 2013 6:40 PM

Being a paedophile might not be a crime, but acting on it is.

by Anonymousreply 4March 16, 2013 6:42 PM

Not sure that Cardinal Napier helping the Holy See with this outré view.

Interesting times ahead for the Roman Catholic Church, fer sher.

by Anonymousreply 5March 16, 2013 6:46 PM

Tell the children that have been fucked-up for life that it's not a crime.

Jesus, what is wrong with people?

by Anonymousreply 6March 16, 2013 7:03 PM

Pedophilia = something you have = a condition

Committing pedophile acts = something you do = a crime

This shouldn't be that complicated, should it?

by Anonymousreply 7March 16, 2013 7:09 PM

"Tell the children that have been fucked-up for life that it's not a crime."

Pedophilia is sexual desire for children. You are confusing acts with desire. Desire is not a choice or a crime but acting on it is.

Oh, and people who tell abused kids that they are going to be "fucked up for life" are worse than any abuser.

by Anonymousreply 8March 16, 2013 8:07 PM

Thank you Pope Francis...

by Anonymousreply 9March 16, 2013 8:14 PM

[quote]Oh, and people who tell abused kids that they are going to be "fucked up for life" are worse than any abuser.

I never said or implied that they WOULD be. I was talking about those that WERE.

You're good at the straw-man argument, aren't you?

by Anonymousreply 10March 16, 2013 8:20 PM

I disagree that it is not a crime. Many illnesses lead to criminal behavior, including alcoholism and drug abuse.

But I share his concerns about abused victims who fixate on the act and are conditioned to repeat it. This is a well documented psychiatric pattern. If we are - as we should be - concerned about victims of pedophilia we should also be concerned about those many victims - not all but many - for whom their abuse is the source of future acts of pedophilia.

by Anonymousreply 11March 16, 2013 9:57 PM

Something can be both an illness and a crime. If a schizophrenic stabs a guy on the street because the voices in his head tell him the victim is Satan incarnate, it's still a crime.

That cardinal is an idiot, as well as a pedo.

by Anonymousreply 12March 16, 2013 10:30 PM

I do wonder if how much of the adverse effects of sexual molestation is due to society telling them that they're basically damaged goods. If they don't feel sorrow over it, they're 'in denial.'

by Anonymousreply 13March 17, 2013 12:43 AM

There is no treatment for pedophilia that stops it. The pedophile can have therapy every day of his life and he will repeat offend.

by Anonymousreply 14March 17, 2013 9:02 PM

he should be removed from his post..stat. The catholic church rolls over.

by Anonymousreply 15March 17, 2013 9:11 PM

Does molestation define pedophilia? If you have thoughts about sex with children but don't act on it, are you a pedophile?

by Anonymousreply 16March 17, 2013 9:11 PM

Next up, being a rapist is a condition, not a crime

by Anonymousreply 17March 17, 2013 9:24 PM

[quote]Does molestation define pedophilia? If you have thoughts about sex with children but don't act on it, are you a pedophile?

If you have thoughts about sex with children, you are a pedophile. If you act on those thoughts you are a pedophile and a criminal.

[quote]Next up, being a rapist is a condition, not a crime

Being a rapist is a crime. Thinking about raping someone is not a crime.

There needs to be an action to be a crime. Thoughts do not constitute a criminal.

by Anonymousreply 18March 17, 2013 9:35 PM

[quote]There is no treatment for pedophilia that stops it. The pedophile can have therapy every day of his life and he will repeat offend

That's bullshit. There are many people convicted of pedophilia who do not re-offend and the only pedophiles we know of and study are those who act on it. It's IS possible that there are pedophiles who never act on it. Law enforcement, trying to elicit bigger budgets, spreads the notion that every pedophile will act on his inclination and will always keep acting on his inclination... but of course we have no way of knowing this. There aren't many celibate pedophiles willing to come forward.

[quote]Something can be both an illness and a crime.

No. Crimes are actions. Illness are conditions that can lead to those actions but the illness itself is not a crime.

by Anonymousreply 19March 17, 2013 9:35 PM

Although pedophilia has yet no cure, various treatments are available that are aimed at reducing or preventing the expression of pedophilic behavior, reducing the prevalence of child sexual abuse.[20][91] Treatment of pedophilia often requires collaboration between law enforcement and health care professionals.[6][20] A number of proposed treatment techniques for pedophilia have been developed, though the success rate of these therapies has been very low.[92]

[quote]Oh, and people who tell abused kids that they are going to be "fucked up for life" are worse than any abuser.

No, they certainly are not worse than any abuser, you complete and utter moron.

Priests should stop talking about pedophilia like Republicans should stop talking about rape. Nothing good will come of it so just shut the fuck up.

Also, the ephebophilia troll needs to shut the fuck up. If he's underage and you're not, you are molesting him. Stop it.

by Anonymousreply 21March 17, 2013 10:28 PM

r14 is correct. There is no cure for pedophilia. They are voracious predators who can have hundreds of victims over the course of a lifetime. The only way to stop them is to cut off their access to children. Sex offender registries, while they are far from perfect, at least give ordinary people a way to double check whether or not that wonderful friendly guy who just loves kids is likely to turn their child into an internet kiddie porn star.

by Anonymousreply 22March 17, 2013 10:42 PM

My best friend was sexually abused by her father from 7 to 14. He put valium in her bed time milk then did his shit. She told me that as an adult she got aroused by the thought of pedophile sex acts, but that knowing directly the damage, she would never inflict such damage on another person, and she was in therapy for years. Her hatred for her father in her own words was that he acted on his impulses, and as others have said, that made him a criminal and a piece of rotting shit.

by Anonymousreply 23March 17, 2013 10:55 PM

[quote]No, they certainly are not worse than any abuser, you complete and utter moron.

Try this. A girl I know was 9 years old when a neighbor exposed himself to her in a playground. She was a curious girl and she stared for while before turning and running home where she told her mom. Her mom called the police and her dad ran to the neighbor's house screaming "YOU FUCKED MY DAUGHTER???" while a crowd gathered. Her mother wailed to everyone who could hear "She's been ruined for life!!" The police came and when the man came to the door her father rushed past them and began punching the guy until the police had to pull him off and handcuff him. Later, when it came out that she had stood and watched for while, here parents acted as if she was somehow a sick pervert herself.

She's an adult now and while she maintains that the man should have been punished for what he did, she says her parents reaction was far worse than any abuse and any therapy she has been to has had more to do with them and the damage they did, than the 3 minutes during which she saw a grown man masturbating.

"Something can be both an illness and a crime. If a schizophrenic stabs a guy on the street because the voices in his head tell him the victim is Satan incarnate, it's still a crime."

Indeed it is a crime but the schizophrenic is not legally responsible for it and is not guilty by virtue of insanity. Schizophrenics do not understand that the voices in their head are figments of their psyche.

The same is not true of pedophiliacs. Pedophiliacs know what they are doing. They commit a crime and are legally guilty by virtue of their understanding of what they are doing. However, they may be almost irretrievably compelled to do it because of their mental illness. That does not relieve them of criminal responsibility. But, as is illustrated by the fact that this irretrievable compulsion sometimes occurs as a result of the original pedophiliac trauma experienced by victims who are condemned to repeat the act as adults, it does mitigate the heinousness of the act and give us cause to feel compassion not only for victims of pedophilia but for those stricken with the condition.

by Anonymousreply 25March 18, 2013 12:08 AM

Ok, let's assume that is true, OP. But the church officials who knowingly put such priests with children have committed criminal acts and should be sent to prison for their actions. I'd like to see a number of those bishops behind bars. And the perverted priests out of the priesthood and in mandatory multi-year treatment or in jail. Their choice.

by Anonymousreply 26March 18, 2013 2:47 AM

Pedophiliac?

Not all schizophrenics hear voices, and the majority of them are not violent.

by Anonymousreply 27March 18, 2013 3:06 AM

[quote]A South African cardinal who helped elect Pope Francis this week

We don't know that he voted for Francis.

by Anonymousreply 28March 18, 2013 6:55 PM

He's right in that the desire is not voluntary. However, acting on the desire certainly is.

by Anonymousreply 29March 18, 2013 7:08 PM

At one time homos were a crime and also an illness. Now they are not.

How is a pedophile any different?

by Anonymousreply 30March 18, 2013 7:21 PM

The difference, R30, is that, whilst paedophelia is an illness, the act is with a child who is not able to give consent. It is harmful and destructive to the child and should be treated as a crime.

Even if one were to concede that homosexuality is an illness (and I do NOT think that it is in any way), the act with another consenting adult is harmless and does not injure another person so it should not be a crime.

by Anonymousreply 31March 18, 2013 7:57 PM

This shit head is posturing for a popette position.

by Anonymousreply 32March 18, 2013 8:03 PM

If it is an illness, you don't put them in positions where the illness is made worse. You don't re-infect people with the flu. You don't give sugar to those with diabetes. And you shouldn't put these priests with children. Also, you don't hide these other illnesses, so this should not be hidden either. That way other parishes know not to ever put him with children.
