An ATM machine at a bar called El Ocho de Blanco in Puerto Rico has caused an uproar among the island’s LGBT community after a customer received a receipt from the machine with the words “we hate fags” written in English across the bottom. The bar and ATM provider immediately distanced themselves from the offensive message as an image of the receipt went viral across social media networks. El Ocho de Blanco put a message on its Facebook saying they had contacted the ATM provider, ATM Mobile Services, and had disconnected the machine.
ATM Mobile Services president Jorge Torres said “someone from the outside gained access to the system and programming of the machine.” And made it clear that his company that his company did not intentionally offend the LGBT community and would have its machines security systems upgraded in the future.
Pedro Julio Serrano, an LGBT activist, sees this incident as a reason why the island should pass a law proposed by Puerto Rican Senator Ramón Luis Nieves which would criminalize discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Serrano wrote Homophobia is unacceptable, wherever it comes from. This can’t keep happening in Puerto Rico.
