Älterenschwulen, tell me about the rise and fall of Pia Zadora.

Who would be her equivalent today?

I had never heard of her until her rich superannuated husband tried to buy stardom for her.

What's his name – Riklis?

Seems to me he bought her a Golden Globe award or something.

Sandra Lee

Janet Jackson comes to mind.

She rose, but not very high.

by Anonymousreply 603/06/2013

Before she made a splash in Hollywood, I remember seeing her Dubonnet commercials and thnking, "Who the hell is Pia Zadora?"

by Anonymousreply 703/06/2013

R6, What stopped her climb?

by Anonymousreply 803/06/2013

Janet didn't reach the heights that Pia Zadora did.

As far as the rise part, a friend was the musical director of the original "Dames at Sea". Pia Zadora was Bernadette Peter's replacement. She played about four performances before they found out she was actually 16. Apparently she was quite good, but lying about her age got her canned.

nobody....she was like totally unknown and then boom she won a Golden Globe back when there wasn't much publicity about them. Granted I was a kid so I could be remembering this wrong but I think there was almost like hysteria when she won (like people openly shaking there head and going OMG! and booing) I wish it was on youtube. I remember her joyously making a speech while the crowd talked over her.

BTW they took the Golden Globes off the networks for like twenty years after this. It aired on cable and a lot of people wouldn't even show up.

by Anonymousreply 2203/07/2013

Thank you R18, I needed that! Never saw the movie!

by Anonymousreply 2303/07/2013

I found a long trailer for her Butterfly movie that won the golden globe for her, it looked rotten to the core.
