I spoke fluent German with no American accent as a high school exchange student in the 80s. However, the language has changed over the past 30 years, with all sorts of tech and Internet vocabulary, and I'm a bit lost when it comes to that stuff in German now. In general, I'm not especially proficient at discussing anything more sophisticated than a 16-year-old would talk about, though I can still read and understand perfectly.
