Classy. Very classy.

I never heard of it growing up in the 70s. It's a Japanese thing, right? Must've caught on in the 80s.
|by Anonymous||reply 3||03/05/2013|
I thought it was actually Hello Clitty.

I don't get it. I have no idea why people buy that crap.

All the punk rock girls and boys who sported that bullshit were all getting raped by their brothers and uncles.

Can someone please enlighten me? What and why?

I recently took a flight on EVA air with a stopover in Taiwan. I believe that country is formed around Hello Kitty.

Kitty & Mimi are lesbian role models.

I remember it from the late 70's.
My good friend had teeny, tiny bags filled with miniature pencils and pads and god-knows what else, I can't remember it all.
They were very adorable.

I'm mildly obsessed. It's part kitsch and part unironic appreciation of the kawaii. My favorite gift this past Christmas was a Hello Kitty miniature sushi bar set; it is adorbs. I also love my Hello Kitty tarot card set.
I don't talk about my HK love in mixed company.

HELLO KITTY is a rip-off of Miffy the white bunny by Dutch children's book author Dick Bruna.
In 1976, Sanrio introduced Cathy, a bunny friend of Kitty who was an even closer ripoff.
Miffy (introduced in 1955) made Bruna a millionaire already, and he did a cool thing by coming to an agreement with Sanrio After the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami both sides decided to come together in the spirit of conciliation to help the victims of the disaster.
The lawsuit was dropped and Sanrio agreed to retire Cathy. Both sides donated the saved legal costs (¥17.66 million yen) to the victims of the earthquake.

Is there still a life size Hello Kitty "walk around" character on 42nd Street?
It used to creep me out.

I own a Hello Kitty toaster and size 11-12 Hello Kitty slippers. Both are toasty.

I prefer "Yo, Pussy"

Hello Kitty turned me gay
|by Anonymous||reply 19||02/17/2014|
Based on that other thread, shouldn't the name have been Americanized to "Hey Kitty"?
|by Anonymous||reply 20||02/17/2014|
R15, ALL those "characters" should creep you out.
|by Anonymous||reply 21||02/17/2014|
Thanks, R14. Sometimes one learns something on this board.

I was working in Hong Kong a few years ago and the office secretary took me to a Hello Kitty Megastore. We even had lunch there. I think I had Hello Kitty pancakes.
|by Anonymous||reply 23||02/17/2014|
Gotta love that Kitty !
|by Anonymous||reply 24||02/17/2014|
r20, l think it's more like Yo, Kitty... I'm taking to you bitch

I love Hello Kitty merchandise-it's my biggest secret guilty pleasure! When I was on a spring break with my buddies a few years ago I bought myself a pink Hello Kitty ball while I was heavily intoxicated and posed with it for some photos on the beach.
The funniest thing about it is that I was still closeted back then but apparently no one found me posing with a Hello Kitty ball suspicious at all (it was then that I realized just how gullible straight people are).
Here's the infamous photo (view at your own risk!).

R27, you have sexy legs and cute feet!
|by Anonymous||reply 28||02/17/2014|
R27? I bet you call yourself "straight-acting, straight-appearing" too.
|by Anonymous||reply 29||02/17/2014|
r13 was very informative. I'd never heard of "kawaii", even though I've seen it IRL quite often.
As for the Times Square "characters", they're all frightening. The costumes are mostly of poor design and filthy!
Take Papa Smurf: tragic!

I was very surprised when I saw an entire store devoted to Hello Kitty merchandise in San Francisco.

r9, I think that Eva has a jet painted in Hello Kitty livery. I saw it at SeaTac a few weeks ago.

Hello Kitty should be the focus of the next season of The Following.

r32 was it an official Sanrio store? The headquarters for Sanrio USA are in San Francisco.

Speaking of Japanese imports, which "Battle of the Planets" (adaptaton of Gatchaman) character would you fuck? My choice is Mark, of course. I can't start threads, so feel free to start on (with a survey).

Years ago, I went to a White Elephant gift exchange and one of the gifts was a Hello Kitty Waffle Iron. I wanted that waffle iron so badly- but it had already been stolen twice by the time it was my turn to select a gift.
|by Anonymous||reply 38||02/17/2014|
R27 you are hot!
