Bone Marrow Donation

If anyone's been a donor, what are the pros and cons of he procedure?

by Anonymousreply 1603/02/2013

Can you get paid to do it?

by Anonymousreply 103/02/2013

I'm signed up as a donor. I'd like to hear from anyone who's been through this.

by Anonymousreply 203/02/2013

Just a quick question OP, are you even allowed to give bone marrow? I went to sign up because a little girl in my area needed a transplant and I'm -O (universal donor). I ran into the same problem as when I tried to give blood, I'm "a man who has sex with another man since 1977". I used to give all the time til I lost my virginity, I know I could just lie since it's a bullshit policy and I get tested, but I just stopped donating.

About ten years ago a blood bank refused me as a donor because of Hepatitis B thirty years ago.

by Anonymousreply 403/02/2013

R3 and R4, I thought that policy had changed. Am I wrong? I'm too lazy to Google it.

by Anonymousreply 503/02/2013

If you decide to donate, please benefit from my experience: don't just bring it to the center; have it extracted professionally.

by Anonymousreply 603/02/2013

They don't want no fag DNA.

by Anonymousreply 703/02/2013

R5 the policy is actually set by the FDA who recommended in 2010 that it NOT change. A quick wiki search will give you the full list of policy by nation, most countries have an indefinite ban on gay men giving blood, lesbians are fine though.

It is one of the most painful procedures. OP. I don't think you know what you're getting yourself into.

by Anonymousreply 903/02/2013

I'd never donate anything to anything so homophobic.

by Anonymousreply 1003/02/2013

Just go down to the butcher shop and get some. No one will ever know.

I'm must tell you it does involve a VERY large needle.

by Anonymousreply 1303/02/2013

Yeah, but you could save someone's life.

by Anonymousreply 1403/02/2013

It's one of the most painful procedures you can have done, OP. I have a friend who donated marrow for a relative and has never been entirely healthy since.

by Anonymousreply 1503/02/2013

My friend did it and she"s fine. It is not comfortable, but you are quite possibly saving someone's life. Well worth the discomfort.
