I would not call it free spirited. It is practical. I wear Birkenstocks all year long. Sometimes the weather calls for socks. Sometimes I knit the socks myself.

Yes, they look awful and people hate them, but if you have painful feet problems, sometimes socks and sandals are the only footwear that don't hurt.

socks are ok with birkenstocks (it's a california thing) but not with any other type of sandals.
