I agree!

I don't like her writing style. I find it very similar to Hemingway's strangely enough.

'Death Comes For The Archbishop ' was a good read. It had very subtle homo overtones, and the insight into the predatory ways of the catholic church in the southwest is sickening.

by Anonymousreply 1103/15/2013

Remember: Willa Cather was known among her closest friends as Bill. That might tell you something about her sexuality!

by Anonymousreply 1203/15/2013

I don't know if I would say that.

But I would say that Death Comes For the Archbishop is as beautifully written an American novel as any.

Willa penned under William Cather Jr (hence Bill), when she first graduated from High School in Nebraska (originally from Va, family pioneered the west when she was ten). She originally wanted to be a Dr, and chose then Literature. Ended up in Pittsburgh as a drama critic writer, where she met a woman friend Isabella McChung. They traveled to Europe together & Willa published poems inspired by the trip. Eventually Willa got a job in NYC and was editor of McClure's Magazine, met then, Edith Lewis, with whom she shared an apartment with until her death.

When her old friend Isabella announced she was engaged, Willa was shocked.

Yeah, Lesbian.

She had an affair with an hispanic man named Julio--she was a bean queen.
