'Barebacking,' Or Unsafe Gay Sex, Is On The Rise Along With HIV/AIDS

"We keep talking about barebacking as if its some kind of psychosis, when really all it is is men behaving naturally," Mark S. King author and blogger at MyFabulousDisease.com said.

by Anonymousreply 6605/27/2013

It's plateauing in some quadrants of society, increasing in others. I'm starting to think some people are naturally immune to HIV. But nothing to mess around with.

by Anonymousreply 102/28/2013

Fuck you bare, R2.

by Anonymousreply 303/01/2013

Nothin' hotter than fucking a spermy hole.

by Anonymousreply 403/01/2013

I like how in that video they immediately talk about gay black men, as if that's the only population seeing a rise in HIV infection.

We're really starting to stigmatize that population as "carriers" and it's doing no favors for the white guys that are also getting infected.

by Anonymousreply 503/01/2013

Gay porn is increasingly going condom-free. Apparently the subscribers demand it. Ugh. What a bunch of nasty trolls.

by Anonymousreply 603/01/2013

When you don't value yourself and your life you bareback. Simple as that.

by Anonymousreply 703/01/2013

R2, for someone so morally pure, you seem to have no problem being a party to homicide.

by Anonymousreply 803/01/2013

Until the media and society begins to scrutinize, deconstruct and make generalized, sweeping judgement calls of the black community and women, they need to stay the fuck out of the gay man's bedroom.

While barebacking is foolish and dangerous, I'm tired of it being used to covertly generalize the gay community. Why do we never see pieces like this on the sexual habits of women or blacks or Hispanics? In the year 2013, they're still stigmatizing HIV as a "queer germ".

This is the combination of both misandry and homophobia and it should be pushed back on, with force.

by Anonymousreply 903/01/2013

r9, gay men can also be black or Hispanic, no?

by Anonymousreply 1003/01/2013

Barebacking is STUPID

by Anonymousreply 1103/01/2013

christ Mark S. King is a fucking douche

empty logic to justify his irresponsible barebacking lifestyle

by Anonymousreply 1203/01/2013

No one should be surprised by this. I've definitely noticed some guys I'm hooking up with don't seem to think about a condom til I bring it up.

Gay porn is now going back to bareback. Gay characters on TV never seem to think about about condoms.

The whole "safe sex" mentality of the gay community that appeared after the aids crisis seems to be gone. It is a terrible and sad thing.

by Anonymousreply 1303/01/2013

[quote]Barebacking is STUPID

But sooo hot. And that's the problem.

by Anonymousreply 1403/01/2013

They have never made a condom that allows you to FEEL the sex as a top.

by Anonymousreply 1503/01/2013

I was amazed the other night. The bf and I went out to a party with two guys we haven't seen on a social level in about a year.

Anyway, they're in their 20s. Cute guys, too.

Both self-described bottoms (and they love it).

They are your stereotypical bottoms. They love big dick. They love getting fucked by hooking up on Scruff or meeting guys at the gym.

I was shocked when they were [seriously] telling us that everyone barebacks, "microwaves" with those they don't trust, etc.

When I questioned the barebacking, it was like I was completely out of touch. It's normal they told me.

The next day I saw one at the gym and asked if he was just drunk, trying to get a rise out of me, and he looked at me like I was stupid.

Crazy times. Who the fuck would want HIV? Even if you just pop pills that give you diarrhea. I mean, who the fuck wants to pop pills and have the hershey squirts????

by Anonymousreply 1603/01/2013

[quote]Why do we never see pieces like this on the sexual habits of women or blacks or Hispanics? In the year 2013, they're still stigmatizing HIV as a "queer germ".

Sexual habits of women: "slut shaming" has been going on for millennia

Sexual habits of blacks or Hispanics:

Teen pregnancy statistics are quick to point out the high incidence in blacks and Hispanics and have been for years.

Furthermore:

"African Americans accounted for an estimated 44% of all new HIV infections among adults and adolescents (aged 13 years or older) in 2010, despite representing only 12% to 14% of the US population."

"In 2010, black men accounted for 70% (14,700) of the estimated 20,900 new HIV infections among all adult and adolescent blacks. The estimated rate of new HIV infection for black men (103.6/100,000 population) was seven times as high as that of white men, twice as high as that of Latino men, and nearly three times as high as among black women."

These stats also include people who are black AND gay:

"In 2010, black gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM)a represented an estimated 72% (10,600) of new infections among all black men and 36% of an estimated 29,800 new HIV infections among all MSM. More new HIV infections (4,800) occurred among young black MSM (aged 13-24) than any other age or racial group of MSM."

by Anonymousreply 1703/01/2013

sorry for the double post...but, r6, that's just a bad statement.

It's to sell on line product.

It's a fantasy. Hint: not that proportion of guys have huge dicks in real life.

The problem is the idiots barebacking. Don't blame pron producers for it.

by Anonymousreply 1803/01/2013

R19...not true.

Some do of course, but many do not.

by Anonymousreply 2003/01/2013

what's microwaving? I've never heard of that.

by Anonymousreply 2103/01/2013

R19, I feel that is wrong, but I do find barebackers to be completely irresponsible, like unwed mothers who get knocked up and don't give a fuck about the kids.

by Anonymousreply 2203/01/2013

[quote]But sooo hot. And that's the problem.

it's not a problem if you don't do it.

by Anonymousreply 2303/01/2013

HIV is not seen as a death sentence anymore. It is viewed more like a manageable ailment like diabetes.

I try to tell people, there are so many other NASTY things you can get aside from HIV - herpes, syphilis, chlamydia, hep c, anal warts.

by Anonymousreply 2403/01/2013

I see a double standard. Why isn't condomless sex a big deal in hetero videos? Do they even allow condoms these days?

by Anonymousreply 2503/01/2013

[quote] It is viewed more like a manageable ailment like diabetes.

it's also sound advice NOT to get diabetes, which is likewise preventable in many cases. you queens fuss about people who eat too many donuts and become fat and "a drain on the health care system" why would this be viewed any differently?

by Anonymousreply 2603/01/2013

What is microwaving?

by Anonymousreply 2703/01/2013

Bareback sex is normal sex -- and that's the problem. It isn't natural or normal to stop and slap on a condom. It took an incredible amount of energy and effort in the 90s to get even partial compliance with this. It helped that people were dying, but even so, people still had sex sans condoms.

Straight people do the same thing, for the same reasons, and. They have a hard time stopping an using condoms. While they aren't as likely to catch HIV, they do wind up with an unwanted pregnancy. It takes lots of work and effort to get even partial condom use here, too.

One of the only things that's cut down on pregnancy rates has been the pill, allowing women to control their ovulation and do so totally divorced from the heat of the moment.

For us, if Truvada / PrEP has the potential to do the same, allowing people to protect themselves from HIV before they are ever even in a situation they'd need to.

by Anonymousreply 2803/01/2013

Herpes, Genital Warts, Syphillis, Gonorrhea and eventually the next lethal STI says hi R28.

HIV isn't the only thing out there, and just like it struck unexpectedly so can the next thing.

by Anonymousreply 2903/01/2013

Here is what everyone is ignoring.

Condoms kill sensation, almost all of it. The top can't feel the sex with a condom so of course he will not want to wear one.

The bottom wants to get fucked so he agrees.

by Anonymousreply 3003/01/2013

You can only get AIDS from barebacking if the top has AIDS. Either these fuckers are unaware of their status, or they're saying the hell with it and infecting people anyway.

There's there's the poz guys who think not divulging but wearing a condom will keep the bottom safe. A thin sheath of latex against a disease; as if.

by Anonymousreply 3103/01/2013

You are more likely to get hit by a car than get one of those STIs, r28. Unless you are wearing full body condoms, you could pick up most any of those from oral or frottage.

Let's talk about preventing a real problem -- HIV -- and not the Magical Diseases of Doom that live in your mind.

by Anonymousreply 3203/01/2013

[quote]Condoms kill sensation, almost all of it. The top can't feel the sex with a condom so of course he will not want to wear one.

You're doing it wrong.

by Anonymousreply 3303/01/2013

What was the Katherine Hepburn line? "Nature is what we are put into the world to rise above"?

I suppose it is "natural" for men to be indifferent about their sex partners, but that doesn't mean society should indulge or share that indifference. Sexual responsibility is part of sexual privilege, so we have to encourage safer sex practices.

by Anonymousreply 3403/01/2013

Bareback: Join us, or be the odd man out. Odd means healthy in that regard.

Being HIV negative has an image problem. Turn it into something desirable that makes you stand out from the sexually active gay masses in a good way and the movement will visibly grow in numbers.

One of the first steps could be a hook-up site where the members pledge to only have safer sex, host drug free safer sex parties (and make them look fun, sexy, and alluring to others that may want to join the movement) and share / show off all the good stuff that comes with having safer sex.

A more radical solution would be to take on a harsh 'stay safe or be the odd man out' stand and treat HIV positive men and known barebackers as outcast when it comes to sexual themed experiences and situations (as in NO HIV positve people allowed to attend this safer sex party - even though only safer sex is practiced).

by Anonymousreply 3503/01/2013

Good R35, then the straight people can say no gays in the workplace. Or I find people with Celiacs disease a burden, I can rule them out. Come to think of it, let's go for poor people - they can surely help being poor.

Have you ever heard of the Nazi party? If not, you should read up on it.

by Anonymousreply 3603/01/2013

"microwaving" is when the top inserts the head of his dick into the bottom's ass but not "full throttle" or "fully cooked" just for a minute or so.

Odd I know.

by Anonymousreply 3703/01/2013

Hmm r37 that's an odd definition and actually sounds like it should be the very opposite of what it is, like throw it all in the microwave and cook it up.

by Anonymousreply 3803/01/2013

My Fabulous Disease?

Christ, that's delusional.

Yes, HIV and AIDS were demonized, and people with HIV/AIDS shouldn't be.

But it's a medical condition that is chronic and must be carefully managed all through one's life.

Between "my fabulous disease" and the shiny ads for HIV meds, it's no wonder people are not concerned about seroconverting.

Adults make choices and we don't need to live and cower in fear....I get that. But let's not try to make the process of contracting a chronic, long term virus something that's shiny, fun and inclusive.

by Anonymousreply 3903/01/2013

I've never understood why you'd want to fuck without a condom. It's still your ass and it's primary function is as a utility. Who'd realistically want to stick their dick up somebody's but without some kind of cover? It's bacteria city. Welcome to your UTI. And that's just for the top, who's risk is limited. It's still an ass. There's a factual basis for there never having been a household cleaner or cologne called Ass.

by Anonymousreply 4003/01/2013

"Good [R35], then the straight people can say no gays in the workplace."

Not comparable in the slightest, R36. The choice of consenting adult sexual partners is not under the purview of the law, or the supreme court, and R35's post was all about the completely legal choice of sexual partners.

Anti-discriminatory laws do not apply in the bedroom, and people are free to discriminate against sexual partners on the grounds of race, age, dick size, medical history, height, weight, and every other damn unfair thing in the world. As you'd know, if you had any sense.

by Anonymousreply 4103/01/2013

I'm young gay male in NYC, most friends in late 20s / early 30s, and I don't know anyone who would admit to barebacking with casual sex partners. It's been a major deal everytime two guys in a relationship decide to finally stop wearing condoms. So I'm always surprised at reports like this. Unless guys are barebacking more often and don't want to admit it in certain circles. Or maybe socioeconomic factors do have more to do with it

by Anonymousreply 4203/01/2013

r36, stop being so dramatic. Do you also insist on gay marriage leading to people marrying their pets, cars, boats, or plants?

Acceptance and support is one thing, but people should be downright forced to realise that becoming HIV positve has some serious consequences and should not be ignored or encouraged. Of course everybody is free to make his choice and then has to live with the consequences from his own actions.

It's revolting. Just last night I was forced to participate in an AIDS-org fundraiser with my company, and I just kept thinking "Why the fuck are we still being pestered and hounded to raise money for this shit in 2013? WEAR A FUCKING RUBBER, YOU SKANK WHORES!"

Nobody should still be getting this shit. I have less than zero sympathy for anybody who does, and I certainly am not interested in helping take care of them financially after they do. It's their own fault...if one makes one's bed, one should damn well lie in it.

Disgusting. Giving us ALL a bad name, when most of us know better.

by Anonymousreply 4503/01/2013

R45 sounds extreme, but at this point, it does seem some people are affording the same level of sympathy for new HIV+ men as for deadbeat fathers who knock a woman up on a one night stand. The rationale, isn't completely absent. Wear a condom.

by Anonymousreply 4603/01/2013

You can be supportive of HIV positive people and HIV/AIDS causes and still say no to have sex with an HIV positive person even with a condom. One doesn't rule out the other.

by Anonymousreply 4703/01/2013

I think more guys are barebacking than anyone would ever dare admit. Take a look Cam4, I have yet to see a condom on that site.

I thought he did have it. I think the MTV movie at least implied it, if not coming right out and saying it. Been a while since I saw that. Didn't the female officer who found his body and who touched a bucketful of his blood go on the PEP regimen (or whatever it was called back then)?

by Anonymousreply 5803/01/2013

I've had a few people tell me HIV-positive folks actually live longer than people without the disease. Turns out they were referencing a British study:

"There is starting to be some evidence, though based on very small numbers of patient records, that if people with HIV in the UK reach the age of 60, their life expectancy may actually be starting to exceed the average, possibly because of superior medical monitoring and treatment for people with HIV compared to other older people."

Read further, however, and you can see that drug resistance is a real threat.

by Anonymousreply 6003/02/2013

I hate the rationale that people who practice unsafe sex often give: "It's my choice."

Would you "choose" to have someone sneeze in your face during flu season? Probably not. And yet you're willing to have someone stick his dick up your ass and give you a deadly disease.

by Anonymousreply 6103/02/2013

Yes, I know HIV is somewhat "manageable" these days and not the death sentence it once was. However, it's only manageable by taking varying amounts of expensive medications for the rest of your life. And why do you want to be on powerful, potentially toxic meds forever?

Besides, even with healthy, uninfected people, the normal aging process takes its toll. Manageable things like a bad back, diabetes, losing your hair, asthma, minor bouts of skin cancer, etc., etc., for better or worse, are all part of getting older. You need to try and take care of yourself. Why the hell do you want to deal with "manageable but deadly" HIV too? It doesn't make sense. Wear a condom.

by Anonymousreply 6203/02/2013

r40 you just made me laugh out loud.

by Anonymousreply 6303/02/2013

I think r35 has a point when he says "being HIV negative has an image problem."

I'm HIV negative, and take pride in the fact that while yes, I've had my slip ups in the past (going on two years since the last slip up, and that was with someone I knew and we were both quite drunk and discussed everything the next morning), I remain HIV negative and think its very important not only to use condoms, but to make sure none of my sexual encounters occur with alcohol involved.

I almost feel like it's not PC to be open and proud about being and staying negative, like I'm somehow stigmatizing those who are poz by being open about the fact that I don't have HIV and I don't want it.

I also think that there are three factors not doing us any favors when it comes to fighting HIV: bareback porn and the rise of barebacking as normal, operating as if HIV is only something that happens to Blacks and Latinos, and Big Pharma's decades-long and relentless PR campaign that has a goal of making HIV seem inevitable and not a big deal. That's the most terrifying of all of them because our gay media is complicit by taking the advertising monies that are being spent spreading this message on our popular blogs and magazines.

by Anonymousreply 6403/02/2013

I'm 21, and I've barebacked with random partners a few times :/ still clean though - so never again.
