"America's Got Talent" has finally filled the middle seat between Howard Stern and Howie Mandel for Season 8. According to multiple reports posted Wednesday, February 20, 2013, singer Mel B aka Melanie Brown aka "Scary Spice" from the Spice Girls will be the new lady judge on "AGT".
Brown will replace Sharon Obsourne on the prime time variety talent competition. Osbourne left the show after a personal spat with NBC at the end of Season 7, after the network fired her son Jack from performing in a physically rigorous reality show after learning that he had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Sharon Osbourne later told Stern that she wrote a personal letter to NBC President Paul Telegdy asking for her job back but she was roundly rebuffed. Read the story here
Telegdy spoke to EW Online Wednesday after the news of Brown's casting hit the press, telling the entertainment magazine:
“To know her is to know a very frank, strong, enduring entertainer. Someone who has a very strong point of view. We needed somebody who was qualified for the job. She’s an amazing singer, dancer and a huge personality. The contestants will get a lot of constructive feedback from her and I can’t wait to see her chemistry with Howard and Howie.”
Mel B is best know for her role as part of the 90s British pop girl group the Spice Girls. In 2006, she became a tabloid star after news broke that she was pregnant with Eddie Murphy's child. The couple had split, but paternity tests eventually proved that the child was Murphy's baby. Simon Cowell hired her as a judge on the British version of "The X Factor" in 2012.
"AGT" took it down to the wire when it came to selecting a replacement for Osbourne. Stern, Mandel and Brown are scheduled to start judging auditions across the country in March.
At the time of this report, Howard Stern had yet to comment on the Scary Spice casting.
