I know about Downton Abbey, The New Normal, Days of Our Lives and Spartacus. Are there any others?
What are the current TV shows with gay characters?

I assume they mean Nolan, who is a bisexual character, not gay. One of the very few male bisexual characters of television.

|by Anonymous||reply 14||02/10/2013|
There's a lesbian on Go On

I'm not caught up with The Following, that Kevin Bacon show, but according to another DL thread at least one of the two guys that were making out with each other on the new episode is supposedly gay.
|by Anonymous||reply 16||02/10/2013|
I guess we're supposed to assume that Sue's friend on "The Middle" is gay.
|by Anonymous||reply 17||02/10/2013|
Girls and Shameless have principal gay characters, as well as this season of Californication having an interesting storyline about the "first fully out A-list actor" played by a very hot actor called Johann Urb.
|by Anonymous||reply 18||02/10/2013|
I'm not sure about Shameless US, but Shameless UK had several gay characters. The gay son had an active sex life and then when he left the show, the son of the gangster had all sorts of gay sex.
Mad Men had a gay character in the first season. And let's hope that when Mad Men reaches 1969, Don Draper will be an active part of Stonewall and decide to shack up with a younger man (I'm hoping it will be the blonde guy Cosgrove).
|by Anonymous||reply 19||02/10/2013|
There's a flamboyant gay latino man on Reba's Malibu Country. Nice to tick off a couple of minority boxes in one male package.
|by Anonymous||reply 20||02/10/2013|
Shameless has the gay son and he fucks guys in the show.
|by Anonymous||reply 21||02/10/2013|
Shameless US does not shy away from gay plotlines. Ian is a important character and his love life is a substantial part of the show. Entertaining little show.
I do think it is important to clarify how important the gay character is. There is a big difference between a gay recurring character who pops up in a supporting role and a gay series regular with real plotlines.

Has anyone noticed a gay vibe between Raj and Stewart (owner of the comic book store) on "The Big Bang Theory?" It started last season and seems to be building very, very, very slowly. I hope the producers go for it.

What about Danny and McGarrett on Hawaii 5-0? They bicker like two bitchy queens, and when James Caan guested his character even asked if the two of them were "an item". And we all know about Scott Caan in real life....

Who's the gay on Scandal?
|by Anonymous||reply 36||02/11/2013|
Does Shameless US show peen? In the first episode of Shameless UK, Dean Lennox Kelly who plays Kev, rolls over in bed and we see everything. That's the first inkling that Ian, who sees it happen, is gay.
|by Anonymous||reply 37||02/11/2013|
That scene is duplicated in the US version, r37. Big, flaccid peen and all.
|by Anonymous||reply 38||02/11/2013|
Did we ever do a thread where we suggest straight TV characters should be gay? That would be fun.

Kevin Spacey on "House of Cards" is bisexual.
|by Anonymous||reply 48||02/14/2013|
R26, Jai had a guest appearance on Days, he played a guy Will was supposedly interested in.
The Carrie Diaries has a really cute gay character, Walt Reynolds. His storyline has barely started, but he did have a gay moment in episode 4. The show is doing horribly in the ratings though, so don't be surprised if it's canceled.
Jai had a guest appearance on Days, he played a guy Will was supposedly interested in.
No, Jai played a newscaster on Days. At the time, Will was not out as gay, not even to the viewers.
Anyway, I must admit Days are playing some pretty hot gay scenes. Today, they had Will dreaming of Sunny. He appeared in the shower, and they started kissing.
However, nothing was hotter than the drunk "straight" Will kissing some random dude in the tunnel.
|by Anonymous||reply 52||02/15/2013|
I know that, R52.. but the whole point of Jai's character was getting Will to figure out he was gay, basically.

There's DL favorite Thor the male nurse on Nurse Jackie, which also houses O'Hara, a bisexual female doctor.
For another riveting bisexual chick, we have Kalinda on The Good Wife, which occassionally throws us a scene once in a blue moon featuring Alicia's bitchy but wimpy gay brother, Owen.
Felix on General Hospital is the Richard Simmons of the 21st century.
|by Anonymous||reply 55||02/15/2013|
AE has a story about a new CBS pilot called The Mcarthys.
"Jake Lacy will play gay character Ronnie in the new CBS pilot The McCarthys. "the smart, funny, neurotic son who came out to his family two years ago. He’s finally decided to move out and begin a life away from his family, but they keep finding ways to involve him in their drama."
This sounds interesting so I hope it gets picked up. There's also some shirtless pics around and he's kind of hot.
|by Anonymous||reply 56||02/15/2013|
r47, I don't watch Scandal, but I'm assuming you do and I have a question. Or anyone else who knows can answer to.
Tonight I saw a commercial for the new episode. Sam Page was on saying to Kerry Washington "You want me to be the first gay Governor of North Carolina?" She says, "Yup." He says, "OK, lets' find me a fake wife."
Is he the same character as the White House Chief of Staff that you mentioned in your post? Or is this another guy?
I'm wondering if that would make the show worth checking out. Sam Page is kind of cute, and he sure plays gay a lot.
|by Anonymous||reply 57||02/22/2013|
There's an Australian comedy show called Please Like Me with Josh Thomas. Thomas plays a neurotic dweeb who struggles with coming to terms with being gay while he's in his first gay relationship (and the guy is, like, hot).

BBC's miniseries In the Flesh. Anything more may spoil the whole show. It's pretty intense though.

Did anyone catch Tyrant? What do we think? I thought it was fairly good, though a bit clichéd. And it's so obvious the guy playing the main character isn't Arab. That said, I did like the gay storyline.
The fact that they never mentioned Sammy being gay was very refreshing. They just let it play out, Sammy being confident and flirting with the other guy in the steam room said it all.
|by Anonymous||reply 68||06/27/2014|
I like Tyrant, good show. As to the gay son, Sammy, he is way too confident for a supposedly 16-year teen in an Muslem country.
|by Anonymous||reply 69||06/27/2014|
Allegedly "Vampire Diaries", but it might as well NOT have one.
True Blood of course.
|by Anonymous||reply 70||06/27/2014|
I disagree, R69. I think he's clueless and naive, just like many other guys his age. He just doesn't think. He seems a bit dumb, especially with him admiring his obviously crazy uncle. That says it all. His younger sister seems smarter and more enlightened though.
|by Anonymous||reply 71||06/28/2014|
Shows with gay (male) characters this summer:

"Shameless" has the best gay male plot line with Ian/Mickey of any show I can think of currently airing on US television (ignoring a gay niche show like Looking).
I honestly can't think of anything that beats it.

|by Anonymous||reply 84||08/01/2014|
On "Last Tango in Halifax" (a PBS series and my favorite show on TV), one of the main characters is a lesbian (with her on-again, off-again GF). I also think her oldest son (occasionally bullied because he's "sensitive") will one day be coming out.
|by Anonymous||reply 85||08/01/2014|
I wonder if Thomas on "Downton Abbey" will ever have a boyfriend?
|by Anonymous||reply 86||08/01/2014|
OK, thanks for playing, R85. But again, the question was MALE. This website is for gay men, hence we have interest in gay male characters, not lesbians. You can take that sh*t with you to L Chat, thanks.
I wish someone could make a new thread with MALE in the headline, so we won't get a gazillion lesbian answers again, because nobody here cares about lesbian tv characters.
|by Anonymous||reply 87||08/01/2014|
Fine, R88. Go talk about lesbian characters on L Chat. And please.. it's not like the lesbians have a lack of representation. There's a lesbian on every tv show these days. Not so much for gay male characters.

Captain Holt on "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" is openly gay.
There's the lesbian moms on "The Fosters," with their youngest son, Jude, in the "questioning" category.
I don't believe Rusty from "Major Crimes" has categorical stated that he's gay. He was a prostitute for a time but all his sexual activity was for pay.
|by Anonymous||reply 100||01/19/2015|
The detective on "The Affair", played by Victor Williams, is gay.
|by Anonymous||reply 101||01/19/2015|
While Rusty hasn't ever officially come out and said it, R100, he's had crushes on men for the last year or so and stopped seeing that girl he went to school with. One episode was all about his crush from the TV show he worked on - he asked the guy out but the guy said Rusty was too young. That should make it pretty clear he's gay.
The Arrow just added a gay black character and has lesbian Nyssa daughter of Ra's.
Right, another "I'm gay but I don't get a love life" character. Isn't it funny how the gay male characters never get to kiss their loved ones, yet the lesbian characters get to kiss and have sex all the time? The gay character on The Flash is engaged (I think he's married now actually), and when he thought his fiance was dead, he HUGGED him when he found out he was alive! WTF?! Had these two been women you'd have seen them making out, yet since they are two men all they get is a hug. Same with the gay character on Agents of SHIELD, doesn't get a love life, or like I said, the gay character on Arrow. And the list goes on and on and on. It never ends. They can show gay characters as much as they want, but what is the point if they can't show all of them, including their love lives? I still remember the actor who played one of the gay characters in Black Sails saying they cut back the gay storyline because the writers/showrunners/whoever got cold feet. Lesbian pirates are ok, but not gay ones! Sure, there's some exceptions, Shameless and HTGAWM, but they are definitely in the minority. DOOL was actually not bad in this respect either, until the show was de-gayed of course.
|by Anonymous||reply 125||12/02/2015|
R125 there people complaining that the previous writers didn't use the vets enough and focused too much on the gay story and that they were pushing a "gay agenda" such as when they had Will and Sonny get married or there marital problems on display. Those same people are glad with the new direction the show has taken with the vets on display more and other vets coming back while the gay stuff has been toned down.

Because if I didn't there'd only be like 5 shows worth mentioning. Most gay male characters on tv are neutered and barely there. Thank god for British and other international soaps.. that's where I currently get my fix of gay storylines.. like Eastenders, Emmerdale, Hollyoaks and the new show Crashing.

|by Anonymous||reply 145||02/26/2016|
Thanks for making me aware of that, R144, I didn't know. I've always been a fan of Tom Hiddleston but now I've got even more reason to watch. Again it just further proves that international tv shows, mainly British, are miles ahead of the good ol' USA when it comes to tv shows with gay characters. It's a sad state for gay tv shows in the US. Just last year, in 2015 (!) we had not one, but two shows, with male characters faking being gay. We also had one show where a gay male character had sex with a woman. That's how far we have come! It's absolutely shocking in this day and age. I'm sorry, I just don't trust American shows anymore. Not after the atrocities that was last year. I had to stop watching three shows because of their portrayal of gay men, it was wile. It was like we were back in the 1950s. Even more mind boggling is that these shows have gay showrunners. Actual gay men write horrific gay characters. I just don't get it. Do they suffer from internalized homophobia or something?
|by Anonymous||reply 146||02/27/2016|
Crazy Ex Girlfriend now has a gay and a bi character.
It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia had one of its characters coming out, only to go back in. Ugh..
Archie will hopefully be made into a tv show, and it'll have a gay character.
|by Anonymous||reply 147||03/24/2016|
R145, Mr Robot's bi character is a joke. He had sex with a guy ONCE in order to get information. He is married to a woman and has a kid. We haven't seen him with guys after that one scene. Sure... there's an older gay on the show too, but come on. Would be a lot more interesting if they could actually develop the bisexual guy further, but they're probably too afraid to piss off the fanboys. Funny that they don't seem to mind lesbians though!

Once Upon A Time .... Dorothy Gale, Red Riding Hood = lesbian couple

Nobody cares about lesbians, R149. This is a website for gay men.
Would be a lot more interesting if they could actually develop the bisexual guy further, but they're probably too afraid to piss off the fanboys.
If they cared about that they wouldn't have done it in the first place. They choose to have him engage in a very graphic sex scene with another guy, it wasn't some safe for straight guys cutaway.

I don't know if anyone cares about International shows, I mean.. people should, considering the badly written gay characters on American tv. They usually fall into either of these camps: barely there, neutered, stereotypical or all three. I find International shows much better at portraying gay male characters. It's funny but the US seem to have no problem portraying lesbian characters, they only seem to freak out when portraying gay male characters, never allowing them to get any screen time or love life.
Anyway.. here are some shows from other countries:
Coronation Street (England)
Holby City (England)
Shortland Street (England)
Merli (Spain, Catalan)
Spangas (The Netherlands)
Le Secret des Balls (France)
Un posto al sole (Italy)
Schitt's Creek (Canada)
Orphan Black (Canada)

The Walking Dead's much belated gay guy sucked. Of course we get an effeminate milquetoast instead of one of the swashbuckling straight guys. Have they killed him off yet? I hope so, such a disappointment.
|by Anonymous||reply 155||06/06/2016|
Maybe they will r155 since American tv shows like killing off gay characters.
|by Anonymous||reply 156||06/06/2016|
R155, are you watching FTWD? Because they have a black gay guy who isn't stereotypical at all. He's quite important to the show too.

I know! Gay men that use words like "Milquetoast" are so embarrassing...
|by Anonymous||reply 161||06/28/2016|
R158 some of those shows were already mentioned in the barely there and few of those shows nobody really cares that much about anymore.
|by Anonymous||reply 162||06/28/2016|
I know, R162. Gay storylines on American tv are awful. They are always neutered and/or barely there. Weird they don't seem to have that problem with lesbians though. Lesbian characters always get to have explicit sex on tv while gay male characters don't, hmm. This is why I mostly watch British shows. There are gays on Corrie, Hollyoaks, Eastenders, Emmerdale and Holby City. At least these characters are not neutered.
|by Anonymous||reply 163||06/28/2016|
R160, Riverdale is a new show that will premiere early next year. It's based on the Archie comics and will include the gay character Kevin Keller.
|by Anonymous||reply 164||06/28/2016|
Can't forget that when gays are no longer deemed "perfect" especially gay males the solution on American tv is to kill them off.
|by Anonymous||reply 165||06/28/2016|
Ugh.. I was so excited for the gay storyline on Animal Kingdom but now I realize it's yet another storyline with minimal screen time. The gay guy had zero gay related scenes in the new episode. At least the gay guy is not just barely there, that's something I guess. He gets stuff to do.. just no gay stuff. I always wanted a bad ass gay character, I guess he's as close as we're gonna get, even though they went with the cliche of the "weakest" male in the family, the outsider, being gay. And he's also a self hating closet case, sigh. I mean.. in that family, which his uber macho brothers it makes sense, it's realistic, but it still feels like a stupid trope we have seen a million times before. I just want a badass gay character who is out and proud, sorta like Connor on HTGAWM before he got a boyfriend and became lame. He wasn't exactly "badass", but at least he was out and proud and SEXUAL. One of two ain't so bad, but yeah.. been a while since we had an Omar type character (from The Wire).

British shows with gay characters:

I don't know if the show has been mentioned already, but SyFy's Killjoys features a regular guest character who is gay. In the premiere episode of the second season Aaron Ashmore's character and the gay character pretend to be a gay couple and bicker at each other in order to cause a distraction. It's pretty funny.
|by Anonymous||reply 173||07/03/2016|
r173 I thought he was gay but they never actually said in the first series of Killjoys. Hope he'll do a little more this Season

I've said it before but I'll say it again, British tv shows are miles ahead of American tv shows when it comes to gay characters. There are so many gay characters on British soaps that it's hard to keep track. There are Lawrence, Ronnie, Finn, Aaron and Robert on Emmerdale. Then there are Sean, Todd and Billy on Coronation Street. Hollyoaks has John Paul, James, Ste, Harry and probably more too. Holby City has Dominic and Isaac. EastEnders has Johnny, Steven, Ben and Paul.
|by Anonymous||reply 195||07/06/2016|
Not much on now during the summer, but Animal Kingdom is good and Dead of Summer starts next week. Looking (the movie) will air late July. Hit the Floor special will air later this summer. The Nigh Shift has a gay character too and can be seen on NBC. Hopefully Luke Macfarlane will reprise his role as Drew's boyfriend.
|by Anonymous||reply 196||07/06/2016|
But the British characters are mostly so effeminate, weird, or unattractive
|by Anonymous||reply 197||07/06/2016|
Brit gay characters rarely are hot masculine hunks
|by Anonymous||reply 198||07/06/2016|
The Brit show Cuffs (lasted only one season) has masculine looking gay guys. But I guess that's why it only lasted one season. Not stereo typically gay enough.

Both Aaron and Robert are masculine. Quantico, The 100 and Days should be extremely ashamed of what they have done to their gay characters.
|by Anonymous||reply 203||07/07/2016|
Call the Midwife has a lesbian couple.
|by Anonymous||reply 204||07/07/2016|
R203, I called it with The 100. They only allow lesbians to kiss and have sex on The CW. The gay (male) characters are neutered, as always. They have only kissed once, it's pathetic.
|by Anonymous||reply 205||07/07/2016|
I watch the British version of "Call the Midwife' because PBS in America cuts scenes with the lesbian couple.
|by Anonymous||reply 206||07/07/2016|
I think there have only ever been 2 gay male kisses on the CW the one you mention r205 and the the one on the Originals and not too long after the kiss on the Originals was one of the gay characters killed and the other one eventually neutered and now barely appears. Your right lesbians can kiss up a storm on that network because that's ok to them and when you hear about a gay character on the CW it's usually a lesbian character.
|by Anonymous||reply 207||07/07/2016|
R207, like I said only lesbians are allowed to have sex. Gay male characters do get to kiss, although barely. Bryan and Miller have after one season had ONE lame ass kiss. You can bet your ass had these been lesbians they would have been making out in every episode and had at least one or two sex scenes by now.
|by Anonymous||reply 208||07/08/2016|
It seems that now when a show announces an lgbt character it's either a lesbian or trans character. That show Faking It had a gay male character get with transman and then shames the gay male character into being with the trans character. When gay male characters are killed they don't get the same kind of coverage and outrage as lesbians and trans characters and if a show were to even harm a single hair on a lesbian or trans character's head then there is all kinds of outrage.
|by Anonymous||reply 209||07/08/2016|
Todd and Billy finally kissed on Coronation Street.
|by Anonymous||reply 210||07/08/2016|
R209, I completely agree with everything you said. It's funny that there was such an outrage when three lesbian characters were killed when lesbian characters outnumber gay male characters 10:1. They could kill half of all the lesbian characters on tv and there'd STILL be more lesbian characters on tv. Not only that, lesbian characters are not neutered. They get much better representation than gay male characters. That's why I can't take the lesbians seriously when they complain. They have no idea how good they have it. I've seen shows where there are lesbian characters and gay male characters on the same show, the lesbians get to make out and have sex, the gay male characters are neutered and barely get any screen time. But it's like whatever. I'm used to it. It sucks but I don't see it changing any time soon.

This is on it's way
|by Anonymous||reply 216||07/15/2016|
Thanks, R216. Once again we need to watch British shows to get good gay characters. The UK has always been miles ahead of the US with gays on tv. I mean, there are some exceptions, but I'd say 9 out of 10 times gay characters in the US are portrayed really horrible, always being neutered and barely getting any screen time.
|by Anonymous||reply 217||07/15/2016|
Animal Kingdom is very good. I wouldn't bother with Dead of Summer, the only gay guy doesn't have a love interest.

We've lost so many gay characters this year :( Shane on Faking It, Will on Nashville etc.
|by Anonymous||reply 226||07/17/2016|
Wait, I haven't kept up with Nashville. What happened to Will R226?
|by Anonymous||reply 227||07/17/2016|
I assume R226 meant that Nashville was cancelled. It was picked up by another network, though.
|by Anonymous||reply 228||07/17/2016|
Ok good. Yeah it was picked up by CMT.
|by Anonymous||reply 229||07/17/2016|
Too bad the rest of it is an unwatchable shitshow, R169.
|by Anonymous||reply 230||07/17/2016|
r227 At the moment, he's back with Kyle Dean Massey's character. At. The. Moment.
|by Anonymous||reply 231||07/17/2016|
We did lose a Will named Will Horton but Will Lexington will be back on a new network.
|by Anonymous||reply 232||07/17/2016|
R232, honestly if it never came back I would be ok with it. The writing for Will as been very poor. I have never seen a more miserable gay character. I understand that Nashville is a conservative, possibly homophobic city. But dear god why did they always have to write Will being sad or depressed. He never got "happy" storylines. Either he was trying to kill himself, or he was the victim of a gay bashing, or song-writers refused to work with him because he was gay and the list goes on and on and on. I just couldn't watch it anymore.
|by Anonymous||reply 233||07/20/2016|
