I know about Downton Abbey, The New Normal, Days of Our Lives and Spartacus. Are there any others?
What are the current TV shows with gay characters?

I assume they mean Nolan, who is a bisexual character, not gay. One of the very few male bisexual characters of television.

I'm not caught up with The Following, that Kevin Bacon show, but according to another DL thread at least one of the two guys that were making out with each other on the new episode is supposedly gay.

I guess we're supposed to assume that Sue's friend on "The Middle" is gay.
|by Anonymous||reply 17||02/10/2013|
Girls and Shameless have principal gay characters, as well as this season of Californication having an interesting storyline about the "first fully out A-list actor" played by a very hot actor called Johann Urb.
|by Anonymous||reply 18||02/10/2013|
I'm not sure about Shameless US, but Shameless UK had several gay characters. The gay son had an active sex life and then when he left the show, the son of the gangster had all sorts of gay sex.
Mad Men had a gay character in the first season. And let's hope that when Mad Men reaches 1969, Don Draper will be an active part of Stonewall and decide to shack up with a younger man (I'm hoping it will be the blonde guy Cosgrove).

There's a flamboyant gay latino man on Reba's Malibu Country. Nice to tick off a couple of minority boxes in one male package.
|by Anonymous||reply 20||02/10/2013|
Shameless has the gay son and he fucks guys in the show.
|by Anonymous||reply 21||02/10/2013|
Shameless US does not shy away from gay plotlines. Ian is a important character and his love life is a substantial part of the show. Entertaining little show.
I do think it is important to clarify how important the gay character is. There is a big difference between a gay recurring character who pops up in a supporting role and a gay series regular with real plotlines.

Has anyone noticed a gay vibe between Raj and Stewart (owner of the comic book store) on "The Big Bang Theory?" It started last season and seems to be building very, very, very slowly. I hope the producers go for it.

What about Danny and McGarrett on Hawaii 5-0? They bicker like two bitchy queens, and when James Caan guested his character even asked if the two of them were "an item". And we all know about Scott Caan in real life....

|by Anonymous||reply 36||02/11/2013|
Does Shameless US show peen? In the first episode of Shameless UK, Dean Lennox Kelly who plays Kev, rolls over in bed and we see everything. That's the first inkling that Ian, who sees it happen, is gay.
|by Anonymous||reply 37||02/11/2013|
That scene is duplicated in the US version, r37. Big, flaccid peen and all.
|by Anonymous||reply 38||02/11/2013|

R26, Jai had a guest appearance on Days, he played a guy Will was supposedly interested in.
The Carrie Diaries has a really cute gay character, Walt Reynolds. His storyline has barely started, but he did have a gay moment in episode 4. The show is doing horribly in the ratings though, so don't be surprised if it's canceled.
Jai had a guest appearance on Days, he played a guy Will was supposedly interested in.
No, Jai played a newscaster on Days. At the time, Will was not out as gay, not even to the viewers.
Anyway, I must admit Days are playing some pretty hot gay scenes. Today, they had Will dreaming of Sunny. He appeared in the shower, and they started kissing.
However, nothing was hotter than the drunk "straight" Will kissing some random dude in the tunnel.
|by Anonymous||reply 52||02/14/2013|
I know that, R52.. but the whole point of Jai's character was getting Will to figure out he was gay, basically.

There's DL favorite Thor the male nurse on Nurse Jackie, which also houses O'Hara, a bisexual female doctor.
For another riveting bisexual chick, we have Kalinda on The Good Wife, which occassionally throws us a scene once in a blue moon featuring Alicia's bitchy but wimpy gay brother, Owen.
Felix on General Hospital is the Richard Simmons of the 21st century.

AE has a story about a new CBS pilot called The Mcarthys.
"Jake Lacy will play gay character Ronnie in the new CBS pilot The McCarthys. "the smart, funny, neurotic son who came out to his family two years ago. He’s finally decided to move out and begin a life away from his family, but they keep finding ways to involve him in their drama."
This sounds interesting so I hope it gets picked up. There's also some shirtless pics around and he's kind of hot.
|by Anonymous||reply 56||02/15/2013|
r47, I don't watch Scandal, but I'm assuming you do and I have a question. Or anyone else who knows can answer to.
Tonight I saw a commercial for the new episode. Sam Page was on saying to Kerry Washington "You want me to be the first gay Governor of North Carolina?" She says, "Yup." He says, "OK, lets' find me a fake wife."
Is he the same character as the White House Chief of Staff that you mentioned in your post? Or is this another guy?
I'm wondering if that would make the show worth checking out. Sam Page is kind of cute, and he sure plays gay a lot.
|by Anonymous||reply 57||02/22/2013|
There's an Australian comedy show called Please Like Me with Josh Thomas. Thomas plays a neurotic dweeb who struggles with coming to terms with being gay while he's in his first gay relationship (and the guy is, like, hot).

Did anyone catch Tyrant? What do we think? I thought it was fairly good, though a bit clichéd. And it's so obvious the guy playing the main character isn't Arab. That said, I did like the gay storyline.
The fact that they never mentioned Sammy being gay was very refreshing. They just let it play out, Sammy being confident and flirting with the other guy in the steam room said it all.
|by Anonymous||reply 68||06/27/2014|
I like Tyrant, good show. As to the gay son, Sammy, he is way too confident for a supposedly 16-year teen in an Muslem country.
|by Anonymous||reply 69||06/27/2014|
Allegedly "Vampire Diaries", but it might as well NOT have one.
True Blood of course.
|by Anonymous||reply 70||06/27/2014|
I disagree, R69. I think he's clueless and naive, just like many other guys his age. He just doesn't think. He seems a bit dumb, especially with him admiring his obviously crazy uncle. That says it all. His younger sister seems smarter and more enlightened though.
|by Anonymous||reply 71||06/27/2014|

|by Anonymous||reply 84||08/01/2014|
On "Last Tango in Halifax" (a PBS series and my favorite show on TV), one of the main characters is a lesbian (with her on-again, off-again GF). I also think her oldest son (occasionally bullied because he's "sensitive") will one day be coming out.
|by Anonymous||reply 85||08/01/2014|

|by Anonymous||reply 86||08/01/2014|
OK, thanks for playing, R85. But again, the question was MALE. This website is for gay men, hence we have interest in gay male characters, not lesbians. You can take that sh*t with you to L Chat, thanks.
I wish someone could make a new thread with MALE in the headline, so we won't get a gazillion lesbian answers again, because nobody here cares about lesbian tv characters.
|by Anonymous||reply 87||08/01/2014|
I care about lesbian tv characters. The more representation the better.
|by Anonymous||reply 88||08/01/2014|
Fine, R88. Go talk about lesbian characters on L Chat. And please.. it's not like the lesbians have a lack of representation. There's a lesbian on every tv show these days. Not so much for gay male characters.
|by Anonymous||reply 89||08/01/2014|
R89, why don't you start a new thread? Checking trolldar it seems that you're the only one having a problem, while there are multiple people posting about gay female characters. Why should one person get to dictate the thread?

Days Of Our Lives

Captain Holt on "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" is openly gay.
There's the lesbian moms on "The Fosters," with their youngest son, Jude, in the "questioning" category.
I don't believe Rusty from "Major Crimes" has categorical stated that he's gay. He was a prostitute for a time but all his sexual activity was for pay.
|by Anonymous||reply 100||01/19/2015|
The detective on "The Affair", played by Victor Williams, is gay.
|by Anonymous||reply 101||01/19/2015|
While Rusty hasn't ever officially come out and said it, R100, he's had crushes on men for the last year or so and stopped seeing that girl he went to school with. One episode was all about his crush from the TV show he worked on - he asked the guy out but the guy said Rusty was too young. That should make it pretty clear he's gay.
The Arrow just added a gay black character and has lesbian Nyssa daughter of Ra's.
Right, another "I'm gay but I don't get a love life" character. Isn't it funny how the gay male characters never get to kiss their loved ones, yet the lesbian characters get to kiss and have sex all the time? The gay character on The Flash is engaged (I think he's married now actually), and when he thought his fiance was dead, he HUGGED him when he found out he was alive! WTF?! Had these two been women you'd have seen them making out, yet since they are two men all they get is a hug. Same with the gay character on Agents of SHIELD, doesn't get a love life, or like I said, the gay character on Arrow. And the list goes on and on and on. It never ends. They can show gay characters as much as they want, but what is the point if they can't show all of them, including their love lives? I still remember the actor who played one of the gay characters in Black Sails saying they cut back the gay storyline because the writers/showrunners/whoever got cold feet. Lesbian pirates are ok, but not gay ones! Sure, there's some exceptions, Shameless and HTGAWM, but they are definitely in the minority. DOOL was actually not bad in this respect either, until the show was de-gayed of course.
|by Anonymous||reply 125||12/02/2015|
R125 there people complaining that the previous writers didn't use the vets enough and focused too much on the gay story and that they were pushing a "gay agenda" such as when they had Will and Sonny get married or there marital problems on display. Those same people are glad with the new direction the show has taken with the vets on display more and other vets coming back while the gay stuff has been toned down.

Because if I didn't there'd only be like 5 shows worth mentioning. Most gay male characters on tv are neutered and barely there. Thank god for British and other international soaps.. that's where I currently get my fix of gay storylines.. like Eastenders, Emmerdale, Hollyoaks and the new show Crashing.

Thanks for making me aware of that, R144, I didn't know. I've always been a fan of Tom Hiddleston but now I've got even more reason to watch. Again it just further proves that international tv shows, mainly British, are miles ahead of the good ol' USA when it comes to tv shows with gay characters. It's a sad state for gay tv shows in the US. Just last year, in 2015 (!) we had not one, but two shows, with male characters faking being gay. We also had one show where a gay male character had sex with a woman. That's how far we have come! It's absolutely shocking in this day and age. I'm sorry, I just don't trust American shows anymore. Not after the atrocities that was last year. I had to stop watching three shows because of their portrayal of gay men, it was wile. It was like we were back in the 1950s. Even more mind boggling is that these shows have gay showrunners. Actual gay men write horrific gay characters. I just don't get it. Do they suffer from internalized homophobia or something?

Archie will hopefully be made into a tv show, and it'll have a gay character.
|by Anonymous||reply 147||03/24/2016|
R145, Mr Robot's bi character is a joke. He had sex with a guy ONCE in order to get information. He is married to a woman and has a kid. We haven't seen him with guys after that one scene. Sure... there's an older gay on the show too, but come on. Would be a lot more interesting if they could actually develop the bisexual guy further, but they're probably too afraid to piss off the fanboys. Funny that they don't seem to mind lesbians though!
Would be a lot more interesting if they could actually develop the bisexual guy further, but they're probably too afraid to piss off the fanboys.
If they cared about that they wouldn't have done it in the first place. They choose to have him engage in a very graphic sex scene with another guy, it wasn't some safe for straight guys cutaway.

I don't know if anyone cares about International shows, I mean.. people should, considering the badly written gay characters on American tv. They usually fall into either of these camps: barely there, neutered, stereotypical or all three. I find International shows much better at portraying gay male characters. It's funny but the US seem to have no problem portraying lesbian characters, they only seem to freak out when portraying gay male characters, never allowing them to get any screen time or love life.
Anyway.. here are some shows from other countries:
Coronation Street (England)
Holby City (England)
Shortland Street (England)
Merli (Spain, Catalan)
Spangas (The Netherlands)
Le Secret des Balls (France)
Un posto al sole (Italy)
Schitt's Creek (Canada)
Orphan Black (Canada)

The Walking Dead's much belated gay guy sucked. Of course we get an effeminate milquetoast instead of one of the swashbuckling straight guys. Have they killed him off yet? I hope so, such a disappointment.
|by Anonymous||reply 155||06/06/2016|
Maybe they will r155 since American tv shows like killing off gay characters.
|by Anonymous||reply 156||06/06/2016|

I know! Gay men that use words like "Milquetoast" are so embarrassing...
|by Anonymous||reply 161||06/28/2016|
R158 some of those shows were already mentioned in the barely there and few of those shows nobody really cares that much about anymore.
|by Anonymous||reply 162||06/28/2016|
I know, R162. Gay storylines on American tv are awful. They are always neutered and/or barely there. Weird they don't seem to have that problem with lesbians though. Lesbian characters always get to have explicit sex on tv while gay male characters don't, hmm. This is why I mostly watch British shows. There are gays on Corrie, Hollyoaks, Eastenders, Emmerdale and Holby City. At least these characters are not neutered.
|by Anonymous||reply 163||06/28/2016|
R160, Riverdale is a new show that will premiere early next year. It's based on the Archie comics and will include the gay character Kevin Keller.
|by Anonymous||reply 164||06/28/2016|
Can't forget that when gays are no longer deemed "perfect" especially gay males the solution on American tv is to kill them off.
|by Anonymous||reply 165||06/28/2016|
Ugh.. I was so excited for the gay storyline on Animal Kingdom but now I realize it's yet another storyline with minimal screen time. The gay guy had zero gay related scenes in the new episode. At least the gay guy is not just barely there, that's something I guess. He gets stuff to do.. just no gay stuff. I always wanted a bad ass gay character, I guess he's as close as we're gonna get, even though they went with the cliche of the "weakest" male in the family, the outsider, being gay. And he's also a self hating closet case, sigh. I mean.. in that family, which his uber macho brothers it makes sense, it's realistic, but it still feels like a stupid trope we have seen a million times before. I just want a badass gay character who is out and proud, sorta like Connor on HTGAWM before he got a boyfriend and became lame. He wasn't exactly "badass", but at least he was out and proud and SEXUAL. One of two ain't so bad, but yeah.. been a while since we had an Omar type character (from The Wire).

I don't know if the show has been mentioned already, but SyFy's Killjoys features a regular guest character who is gay. In the premiere episode of the second season Aaron Ashmore's character and the gay character pretend to be a gay couple and bicker at each other in order to cause a distraction. It's pretty funny.

I've said it before but I'll say it again, British tv shows are miles ahead of American tv shows when it comes to gay characters. There are so many gay characters on British soaps that it's hard to keep track. There are Lawrence, Ronnie, Finn, Aaron and Robert on Emmerdale. Then there are Sean, Todd and Billy on Coronation Street. Hollyoaks has John Paul, James, Ste, Harry and probably more too. Holby City has Dominic and Isaac. EastEnders has Johnny, Steven, Ben and Paul.
|by Anonymous||reply 195||07/06/2016|
Not much on now during the summer, but Animal Kingdom is good and Dead of Summer starts next week. Looking (the movie) will air late July. Hit the Floor special will air later this summer. The Nigh Shift has a gay character too and can be seen on NBC. Hopefully Luke Macfarlane will reprise his role as Drew's boyfriend.

|by Anonymous||reply 197||07/06/2016|
Brit gay characters rarely are hot masculine hunks
|by Anonymous||reply 198||07/06/2016|
The Brit show Cuffs (lasted only one season) has masculine looking gay guys. But I guess that's why it only lasted one season. Not stereo typically gay enough.

Call the Midwife has a lesbian couple.
|by Anonymous||reply 204||07/07/2016|
R203, I called it with The 100. They only allow lesbians to kiss and have sex on The CW. The gay (male) characters are neutered, as always. They have only kissed once, it's pathetic.
|by Anonymous||reply 205||07/07/2016|
I watch the British version of "Call the Midwife' because PBS in America cuts scenes with the lesbian couple.
|by Anonymous||reply 206||07/07/2016|
I think there have only ever been 2 gay male kisses on the CW the one you mention r205 and the the one on the Originals and not too long after the kiss on the Originals was one of the gay characters killed and the other one eventually neutered and now barely appears. Your right lesbians can kiss up a storm on that network because that's ok to them and when you hear about a gay character on the CW it's usually a lesbian character.
|by Anonymous||reply 207||07/07/2016|
R207, like I said only lesbians are allowed to have sex. Gay male characters do get to kiss, although barely. Bryan and Miller have after one season had ONE lame ass kiss. You can bet your ass had these been lesbians they would have been making out in every episode and had at least one or two sex scenes by now.
|by Anonymous||reply 208||07/07/2016|
It seems that now when a show announces an lgbt character it's either a lesbian or trans character. That show Faking It had a gay male character get with transman and then shames the gay male character into being with the trans character. When gay male characters are killed they don't get the same kind of coverage and outrage as lesbians and trans characters and if a show were to even harm a single hair on a lesbian or trans character's head then there is all kinds of outrage.
|by Anonymous||reply 209||07/07/2016|
Todd and Billy finally kissed on Coronation Street.
|by Anonymous||reply 210||07/08/2016|
R209, I completely agree with everything you said. It's funny that there was such an outrage when three lesbian characters were killed when lesbian characters outnumber gay male characters 10:1. They could kill half of all the lesbian characters on tv and there'd STILL be more lesbian characters on tv. Not only that, lesbian characters are not neutered. They get much better representation than gay male characters. That's why I can't take the lesbians seriously when they complain. They have no idea how good they have it. I've seen shows where there are lesbian characters and gay male characters on the same show, the lesbians get to make out and have sex, the gay male characters are neutered and barely get any screen time. But it's like whatever. I'm used to it. It sucks but I don't see it changing any time soon.

|by Anonymous||reply 216||07/15/2016|
Thanks, R216. Once again we need to watch British shows to get good gay characters. The UK has always been miles ahead of the US with gays on tv. I mean, there are some exceptions, but I'd say 9 out of 10 times gay characters in the US are portrayed really horrible, always being neutered and barely getting any screen time.
|by Anonymous||reply 217||07/15/2016|

Ok good. Yeah it was picked up by CMT.
|by Anonymous||reply 229||07/17/2016|

We did lose a Will named Will Horton but Will Lexington will be back on a new network.
|by Anonymous||reply 232||07/17/2016|
R232, honestly if it never came back I would be ok with it. The writing for Will as been very poor. I have never seen a more miserable gay character. I understand that Nashville is a conservative, possibly homophobic city. But dear god why did they always have to write Will being sad or depressed. He never got "happy" storylines. Either he was trying to kill himself, or he was the victim of a gay bashing, or song-writers refused to work with him because he was gay and the list goes on and on and on. I just couldn't watch it anymore.
|by Anonymous||reply 233||07/19/2016|

The Flash is a good possiblity, because they feature different timelines, worlds, and stuff. It may very well be that in some alternate universe or timeline one of the main characters is gay or willing to explore his gay sexuality or bisexuality.

You are living in a dream world r246. Cisco is the most popular character on "The Flash", all the fanboys love them, they aren't going to make him gay.
I could almost see it being Captain Cold, just because Wentworth has been so vocal that he sees the character as pansexual.
Arrow already has a prominent gay character in Mr. Terrific, so won't be them.
Maybe someone from "Supergirl". I don't watch this show but isn't there some character all the fans said seemed gay?

|by Anonymous||reply 268||08/22/2016|
R268 FCF would love Hollyoaks. There have been so many gay and bisexual guys, that it's fully anticipated that one of them will die almost every year. Innocent Kieron was murdered by Niall as part of his revenge plan against the McQueen family. (Kieron was John Paul McQueen's lover.) Presumably sexflexible Walker was run over by a train during a fight with Brendan. Brendan, who murdered others himself, was gunned down by the police and almost died, but then he was sent to prison for life. Doug was killed after a bomb exploded. Danny was the victim in a not-so-random car accident. Lockie was murdered by his own brother, then dumped in a lake. Equal opportunity death is pretty much status quo ,,, lol!

Not a current show but one starting on the USA Network in October; saw the trailer for a show called Eyewitness during tonight's Mr Robot.
What caught me is that in the first seconds it shows two teenage boys kissing and sneaking into a shed at night to have sex. Then they witness a murder and get attacked. The rest of the series seems to be focused on the female cop who is investigating this killing in a rural town. The scene with the boys reminded me of the movie "Dream Boy".

Not sure if the character is indeed gay, but there is a character in Cinemax's Original Series Quarry that comes off as a bit on the gay side (in the trailer it's the guy who hammers the nails in the baseball bat, played by Damon Herriman). Plus in the pilot the lead, Logan Marshall-Green, has a brief full frontal nude shot when he jumps in a pool.

I think R287 may be right about Quarry. Last episode, the character you mentioned (his name is Buddy on IMDB) seemed to be make subtle moves on the lead character. Later, Buddy had a meeting with a gun dealer where the dealer showed him a gun with a pink handle, as a special extra deal. When Buddy asked "why do you think I'd like this?", the dealer said, "well, cause you're queer, aren't you?". Buddy got an annoyed look on his face but he didn't correct the dealer. Buddy did kill him later, though, with extreme prejudice.

Possible gay on Mr Robot. Cute Swedish psychopath Tyrell Wellick said that he loves the lead character Elliot. We won't see how he shows this love until next year as tonight was the season finale.

That character on Quarry (BUDDY) is showing more signs that he is a gay man - last night he was shown sitting in a gay bar. A couple of guys come in and he runs over and starts yelling at one about "where were you?" and bad-mouthing the guy he is with. Looked like a case of jealousy at his "friend" being with a new man.

Jennifer Lopez's show "Shades of Blue". I stopped on it one night just to see her "acting". There was Ray Liotta menacing this cute guy, then my jaw dropped when Ray grabbed the guy and started kissing him, so I assume that RL is gay/bi. Don't ask me more, cause I turned it at the next commercial.

|by Anonymous||reply 318||10/09/2016|
Well, R318, we still have a long long loooong way to go with gay male characters. Sure, we have more than 15 or 20 years ago, but they are still neutered and many barely get any screen time. It seems most gay characters are only acceptable if they are sexless so they don't offend anyone (aka Modern Family). Sure there are exceptions, don't get me wrong, but I can count the gay characters who actually get to have a love life on one hand. Not exactly much to brag about in 2016. It's the opposite for the lesbian characters, they get to have an active sex life, and there are lesbian characters on most tv shows these days.

Wth happened to Shameless?! Why is gay Ian now sleeping with a woman?
|by Anonymous||reply 325||10/12/2016|
R325 His boyfriend was sleeping with his ex who was a woman. This made Ian very upset and was basically told to experiment with a woman, so he picked some random woman. He later regretted it and hated the experience, though he confirmed that he is 100% gay.
|by Anonymous||reply 326||10/12/2016|
Still though, R326, was this storyline really necessary?! I found it deeply offensive and borderline homophobic. Can't gay characters just stay gay? It just perpetuates the myth that gay men haven't found the right woman yet. It fuels the ignorance and hate. I'm sick of it. First Empire and now Shameless. If Shamelss gets cancelled it will be a good thing. I refuse to watch a show that has a gay character sleep with a woman.

The new ABC series "Conviction" seems to be implying that the Hispanic guy on the team is gay. In the first episode, he visits a convict in prison (he himself was a former prisoner) and they surreptitiously grasp hands under the table.
And the lead character's brother is played by "Looking" alum and openly gay Daniel Franzese. It's not clear yet whether his character is gay or not.
Not a character, but fellow "Looking" alum and openly gay Murray Bartlett was in the first episode.
|by Anonymous||reply 330||10/13/2016|
Confirmation for the show Quarry -- the character Buddy is indeed gay. He was shown dancing with a guy in a gay bar, then grabbing another guy. He kisses this guy and yells "I loved you". Later he tells his mother that he's writing a proposal, and his mother asks 'to what boy?'.
|by Anonymous||reply 331||10/16/2016|
His boyfriend was sleeping with his ex who was a woman. This made Ian very upset and was basically told to experiment with a woman, so he picked some random woman. He later regretted it and hated the experience, though he confirmed that he is 100% gay.
What irks me, generally speaking (not just with Shameless), is that you don't see straight guys experimenting with guys. It's always gay characters who have to have the "have sex with someone with a gender you wouldn't normally do" storyline while straight guys don't have to sleep with a guy and go "ok, that was nice and all, but in the end I prefer pussy or fall in love with one who happens to have a pussy!". It's like once a character made out with a guy he's tainted or something and can't no longer be taken serious as a straight guy. I believe it would take away a lot of fear about homosexuality / bisexuality when characters could just experiment without it being this great big fucking deal and feeling forced about it just being learning experience framed as a fling.
I mean women had their "I Kissed A Girl (And I Liked It)" why can't guys have the same?
|by Anonymous||reply 332||10/16/2016|

I don't know if it counts, but on the new show Notorious a male character was revealed to be in love with another male character and then the first character killed himself. It happens in episode four.
|by Anonymous||reply 346||10/21/2016|
Just saw the first two episodes of the Doctor Who spin-off Class and that may be a bit off topic, but I am surprised how bloody it is. I expected some cheery family friendly kids show like the Sarah Jane Adventures, but it's a bit closer to UK's Skins or Misfits (hell, even closer to MTV's Teen Wolf) but with Aliens and teens and adults getting brutally murdered. I don't know if it's a spoiler, since it's featured in the trailer, but the male lead is an alien who goes to the prom with a guy. In the second episode you get a nice ass shot from a hot guy playing the coach.
|by Anonymous||reply 347||10/22/2016|
So one of the actors playing a gay character on that Doctor Who spinoff just got married. Really wish we had more gay actors playing gay characters but oh well.

|by Anonymous||reply 349||10/22/2016|
I think the human gay guy is just a regular guest character. Allthough he is in on the secret mission of the show's scooby gang.
Funny lines (SPOILER, obviously):
Go away, we're DECORATING!
I caught my husband fiddling himself on the stairs!
Girl: Anyway ... about the prom ... I was thinking that maybe you and I could ... you know? / Guy, with a big smile on his face: Oh! No, I shouldn't think so.
You watch the Vampie Diaries? / Everyone is very attractive / Yes, it's true.

Ms. Quill is a Datalounger, for sure.
There's another funny line (It's probably hard to understand with the foreign accent).
Charlie: Everything alright?
Matteusz being sarcastic: Oh, yeah. My deeply religious parents are very happy that I'm going to dance with a boy. This has been an evening of love and warmth.
Charlie, smiling (not getting the sarcasm): Great!

No we were told the gay character in Class is one of the lead roles and so a permanent member of the gang. The head writer, Patrick Ness who is gay himself, feels strongly about character diversity and looks to be putting it into action. Unlike some gay show creators I could mention. He has previously written very well thought of books for Young Adults featuring gay characters in lead roles. He's a good choice from the Beeb.
|by Anonymous||reply 353||10/23/2016|
No we were told the gay character in Class is one of the lead roles and so a permanent member of the gang.
The lead is the alien (in the first episode there's a brief glimpse of what he really looks like). The human gay guy is not featured in the group shot(s) promoting the show. However according to imdb he is supposed to be in all eight episodes of season/series (cause it's British!) 1. However I couldn't see him in episode two, that's why I assumed he's just a regular guest character.

Wow, they not only use ugly actors for the gay men but make out them out to be such shameful sociopaths; yes, sex with a minor is shameful but the show paints us all to be profligates that love underage and public sex. Ludicrous! And the 16-year old "gay" rent boy? The only "gay" character that elicits some sympathy and seems like an actual human being despite his profession? In the latest Notorious episode Doug Savant, who played Matt Fielding on Melrose Place, makes a guest appearance. The whole roommate murder mystery throughout the episode has a little bit of a MP callback feeling to it. Or maybe I'm just seeing things?

R409, the LGBT community hate gay men now. They bend over to lesbians and trans women. GLAAD is no different. They never comment on the abysmal portrayal of gay men on tv. Sure, there might be more gay male characters than lesbian, but what is the point when they are just barely there and chaste? The lesbian characters are front and center, they get to have a love life, unlike most gay male characters. But of course GLAAD never comment on this fact, only on lesbian and trans. They are all that matter now. Gay men are all but forgotten about. I guess they view gay men as "priviliged" even though gay men are still disriminated against (even more so than lesbians), as evident both in socieity and as characters on tv. Gay men have it worse than lesbians, that is a fact.
|by Anonymous||reply 413||11/12/2016|
Oh, and btw.. that GLAAD report is so flawed it makes my head spin. There are lesbian characters on so many tv shows: The Fosters, Pretty Little Liars, Younger, General Hospital, Person of Interest, HTGAWM, OUaT, Arrow, The Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, Black Sails, Game of Thrones, The Vampire Diaries, Quantico, Transparent, Boardwalk Empire, House of Cards, Wentworth, Orange is the New Black, The 100, Jane the Virgin, Gotham, Chicago Fire, Gotham.
Shows with gay (male) characters that get a love life and aren't token: Shameless, Empire, HTGAWM.
See a differene here?
|by Anonymous||reply 414||11/12/2016|
Shows with gay (male) characters that get a love life and aren't token: Shameless, Empire, HTGAWM.
Add "Sense8" and now the new show "Eyewitness".
But yes, I would say that is basically it for main gay male characters that have active love lives on current TV.
|by Anonymous||reply 415||11/12/2016|
R409, when two straight characters faked being gay on Quantico and Scream Queens.. what did GLAAD say? NOTHING. They didn't give a fuck. What did they do when gay characters had sex with women on Empire and Shameless? Absolutely nothing. And please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure there have been gay male characters killed off too, not just lesbians. But they are mostly token (as all gay male characters on tv are), so they never get a mention. I'm sick of the hycpcrisy.
|by Anonymous||reply 416||11/12/2016|
Inclusive series debuting this season include American Housewife, Conviction, Designated Survivor, Bull, Riverdale, The Exorcist and Midnight, Texas—though shows like Teen Wolf, Pretty Little Liars and Orphan Black are all heading into their final seasons.
WTF is this shit?! Conviction showed two male characters holding hands ONCE. And since then NOTHING. Riverdale?! The gay guy on that show is just recurring. He is not part of the main cast and he isn't in any of the promos. Teen Wolf? That show has a token gay basically, nothing to brag about. Orphan Black? Only the lesbian characters there got a love life. The token gay character never got a boyfriend, as usual.
|by Anonymous||reply 417||11/12/2016|
Oh, and one more thing then I'll shut up. I have already spammed this thread enough. If you want good gay representation, American tv isn't it. I mean, there are always exceptions, but mostly gays on American tv are token and chaste. I'd say British tv is much better. Please check out shows like Emmerdale, Coronation Street, EastEnders, Holby City and Hollyoaks. There is also that Welsih show Pobol y Cwm. The rest of the world: Merli (Catalan), Salatut Elämät (Finnish), Skam (Norwegian), Goede Tijden Slechte Tijden (Dutch), Neighbours (Australian), Please Like Me (Australian), A Place To Call Home (Australian), Shortland Street (New Zealand).

BBC's Class has a gay lead in a romantic relationship as well.
There are more gay characters in leading roles than ever before. 2016 sucks in many ways, but not in this regard.
|by Anonymous||reply 419||11/12/2016|
R419, you're right. I forgot about Class. I disagree with you about the rest though. If I can count the shows with gay characters (that aren't token and chaste) on one hand, then yes, I stand by what I said, we haven't come far enough. Lesbian characters always get a love life, gay (male) characters never do. At least not on American tv. This is usually much better on British tv and other shows from around the world.
|by Anonymous||reply 420||11/12/2016|
What's with all the miserable gays on tv lately? I thought Nashville with Will Lexington was bad enough. I had to stop watching because I couldn't take his self pity anymore. He was just so sad and depressed all the time. Now it's the same thing on Skam. The gay character is sad and lonely, has nobody to talk to and is now gonna start taking sleeping pills. I'm just sick of gay characters always being portrayed in a negative way. I want happy, successful gay characters in loving relationships. Is that too much to ask?
|by Anonymous||reply 421||11/17/2016|
r421. Apparently the general public wants shows where characters have to deal with all sorts of issues. It's just not gay characters who go from one drama moment to the next.

Everyone's hoping that the 'lesser' gay in Emmerdale, Finn Barton, will finally be getting a story with the guy he rescued in the car crash named "Kasim." .. It's been a few weeks now, and Kasim is still unconscious in the hospital, with Finn developing something of a crush-obsession on the man who's life he saved. And so far, no one else has come forward to take control of Kasim's care or visit him.

TBS' "Search Party" has two gay characters: Elliott (John Early) and his on-again/off-again long suffering "boyfriend" Marc played by Jeffery Self (whose RL boyfriend stars on CBS' "Pure Genius") . Elliott and Marc don't share a lot of screentime together but it's fun when they do. In one scene Elliott balks at Marc referring to himself as Elliott's boyfriend and says, "I swallow your cum". Which is ballsy for TBS.

|by Anonymous||reply 450||11/29/2016|
Here's the trailer for People of Earth. Ennis, the farmer guy who came out as gay, is more or less a glorified extra so far (episode 6) though and him being gay was more of an off hand remark. And you see him very briefly in the trailer, but the trailer helps to set up the show (as it supposed to do)

David is a closeted midget. I wish he'd get over looking for his father and just fuck Aaron already. I guess we have to wait another four months.
|by Anonymous||reply 469||12/15/2016|
r469 Have you noticed that the main gay male characters on Neighbours have been white (like the rest of the cast), but their long term boyfriends are always men of color? The show hardly features men or women of other races, and the gay supporting character just so happens to fill that void. It's nice the show is including gay men of color, but it would be nice if Aaron dated a white guy just once before. I like him with David now though.

There's something gay happening on TNT's "Good Behavior."

R473 Yes. The show is rated TV-MA-LS (Mature). I don't get TNT, so can't explain anything. If you don't have access yourself, I found it on a youtube channel where they "minimize" the screen within the screen. The scene in question starts around the 32:00 minute mark.

|by Anonymous||reply 485||12/19/2016|
R484, I don't care about lesbians at all. They have brilliant representation as it is. Lesbian characters on tv are allowed to kiss and have sex, unlike most gay male characters. That's why I find it hypocritcal when they complain about lesbian characters dying, you could kill of half of all the lesbian characters on tv and they'd still get better representation than gay men.
|by Anonymous||reply 486||12/19/2016|
R486 it's more of a man-vs-woman issue. Women are accorded "sexual agency" and are free to explore their sexuality with both genders. Men are seen through a more binary lense and have less opportunity to explore their bisexuality lest their reputation takes a dive. Probably why we don't hear or see anything about lesbians being thrown off buildings for liking the same sex - they've all been men. For some reason, people think male sexuality is terrifying and must be controlled or decisively eradicated.

Father Marcus (Ben Daniels) in The Exorcist though it only really counts as current if they have a second series as the first is finished now (and the ratings weren't that good though I enjoyed it). Father Marcus was pretty kickass.
As a priest he should be celibate but it looked like that man in the bar was in with a chance before Marcus was so rudely interrupted. In the unlikely event the show is renewed, the producer hopes to follow both Father Marcus and the other exorcist priest further which could show more.

I havent seen the whole series yet, but I rather liked that Tony was one of the only genuinely good guys. Also was rather shocked to find that Gregg Araki directed one of the episodes - but then, 13 reasons has a kinda Araki-feel to it with its tormented quasi-queer emo kids and its shoegaze soundtrack

Trial and Error has John Lithgow playing a murder suspect who, supposedly, killed his wife because he is gay and having an affair with his male trainer.
|by Anonymous||reply 535||04/02/2017|
When I read the summary about 13 Reasons Why I wasn't exactly interested in such a Debbie Downer type of drama show. If it has gay characters I might check it out after all.
|by Anonymous||reply 536||04/02/2017|
r236 here just finished 13 Reasons Why. It's not light entertainment, that's for sure (at some points even infuriating).
There are actually three gay characters on the show: Tony, Ryan and Courtney. Also Courtney has gay dads, one of them none other than QaF's Robert Gant
There's also Tony's boyfriend, Brad, in the present timeline. He is played by Henry Zaga who was in MTV's Teen Wolf as Josh Diaz (he was a member of Theo's pack).

BBC's comedy mini series Decline and Fall (Evelyn Waugh's classic comic novel)
Starring Jack Whitehall (nude - covering his cock and balls - early in the first episode), David Suchet (Poirot), Eva Langoria (Desperate Housewives), Gemma Whelan (Yara Greyjoy from Game of Thrones), Katy Wix (Gemma Simpson from Agatha Raisin - Comedy Murder Mystery show) and Douglas Hodge (Bartholomew Rusk in Penny Dreadful).
Douglas Hodge's character comes out to Jack Whitehall's character in a rather funny way.

On last night's episode of "The Great Indoors," Mason finally acknowledged he was bi. And apparently leans towards guys, because he'd gotten the numbers of two men and one woman, and decided to text one of the men.

There's talk that the boy on the new Disney show "Andi Mack" will be "questioning" his sexuality, a first for the Disney Channel.
|by Anonymous||reply 544||04/08/2017|
It seems like that show is really trying to be progressive. Hopefully they won't pussy out and more shows on Disney will follow suit
|by Anonymous||reply 545||04/08/2017|
Actually, a better article

Last night was the season 6 finale of "Homeland" and it was revealed that the character Dar Adal (F. Murray Abraham) is gay.
|by Anonymous||reply 547||04/10/2017|
LOL, what a surprise.. once again Disney shows how progressive it is by showing LESBIANS, not GAY MEN. Zzzzzzz. I'll pass.

|by Anonymous||reply 551||04/10/2017|
r548, the gay character in Andi Mack (or the one questioning his sexuality..in a show aimed at 8-14 year olds they don't go as far as sex) is a boy

A heads up for UK DLers; series 2 of Versailles starts on BBC2 tonight. Alexander Vlahos plays Philippe, Duke of Orleans; the King's brother. Although married and expected to procreate as per his royal duty he has an ongoing relationship with his male lover Chevalier. (all historically accurate)

Dimension 404 Episode 3. Each episode has a different story and is about different characters. Episode 3 has a Stranger Things feel to it, but with a closeted gay high school nerd as main character.
|by Anonymous||reply 555||04/24/2017|
r555. My sincere apologies. It's not episode 3, the episode I was referring to is episode 4.

OP if you enjoy soap operas and British TV, there's usually a gay couple on any given British soap.
If you don't mind foreign language subtitles, Welsh drama ROWND A ROWND are doing a lovely slow-burn gay romance right now.
|by Anonymous||reply 557||04/24/2017|
There's also two young lads on London classic EASTENDERS atm who are quite interesting; reformed thug/felon Ben & his law-student FwB Johnny.
|by Anonymous||reply 558||04/24/2017|
I like David & Rhys on Rownd a Rownd .. as well as Iolo & Tyler on Pobol y Cwm. Both couples in these two Welsh soaps have chemistry. But EE's Ben and Johnny are less than 'interesting' in my book.

I just done binge watching Santa Clarita Diet. It seem implied that there was a same sex relationship between a cop's wife and the cop's female partner.

Oswald Cobblepot (The Penguin) from "Gotham" is gay and is in the midst of an unrequited infatuation with Ed Nygma (The Riddler). "Gotham" returns tonight at 8 on FOX. Check your local listings.

r591, are you sure that Oswald is still in love, or infatuated, with Ed after what happened in the last episode?

No but seriously, the gay storyline on Casualty is quite good. Mickey's family are neo nazi thugs, they hate black people and gay people. Mickey is gay and is currently dating Jez, a black guy. Mickey's brother is guilty of murdering one of Jez's colleagues. This storyline will be SO dramatic and I can't wait to watch every single second of it.

Who would've thought: Prison break. And it's actually pretty good.
|by Anonymous||reply 579||05/14/2017|
I just saw this, and thought it was interesting so I wanted to post it here. Yes, I know it's a year old and I know many of the characters mentioned are no more, but it still proves how amazing the UK is with gay characters on tv. I will say this though: gay characters on UK tv are usually very PG13 as most of them are on soaps, so there isn't a lot of gay sex etc. If you want more explicit sex scenes etc gay storylines from the US are still better on that front.

Russell T Davies is writing a script about the Jeremy Thorpe scandal in the UK. I vaguely remember this; Jeremy Thorpe was the leader of the Liberal Party. A model alleged that he'd had an affair with him in the early 60s. It ended up with allegations that Thorpe conspired to bump the model off to silence him. Not sure if anything was ever proved but it destroyed Thorpe's career... for a while anyway.
|by Anonymous||reply 581||05/15/2017|
^ It wasn't just "allegations" - his conspirators spilled the beans on him
|by Anonymous||reply 582||05/15/2017|
I'd best watch it to get the full story then r582! At the time I remember my main interest was in the dog, I was very little.

i just watched all eight episodes of Andi Mack and there isn't even a hint of gayness in the dialogue, even though the kid is stylish and seems to have a crush on the other boy. And no teen pregnancy in sight, unless you count the girls mother who had the baby 13 years ago
