What are the current TV shows with gay characters?

I know about Downton Abbey, The New Normal, Days of Our Lives and Spartacus. Are there any others?

by Anonymousreply 3045 hours ago

Who's gay on Downton Abbey. I missed the first 2 seasons and just started watching it.

by Anonymousreply 102/10/2013

Thomas on downton

by Anonymousreply 1102/10/2013

Who's gay in Revenge?

by Anonymousreply 1202/10/2013

I assume they mean Nolan, who is a bisexual character, not gay. One of the very few male bisexual characters of television.

by Anonymousreply 1302/10/2013

General Hospital

by Anonymousreply 1402/10/2013

There's a lesbian on Go On

by Anonymousreply 1502/10/2013

I'm not caught up with The Following, that Kevin Bacon show, but according to another DL thread at least one of the two guys that were making out with each other on the new episode is supposedly gay.

by Anonymousreply 1602/10/2013

I guess we're supposed to assume that Sue's friend on "The Middle" is gay.

by Anonymousreply 1702/10/2013

Girls and Shameless have principal gay characters, as well as this season of Californication having an interesting storyline about the "first fully out A-list actor" played by a very hot actor called Johann Urb.

by Anonymousreply 1802/10/2013

I'm not sure about Shameless US, but Shameless UK had several gay characters. The gay son had an active sex life and then when he left the show, the son of the gangster had all sorts of gay sex.

Mad Men had a gay character in the first season. And let's hope that when Mad Men reaches 1969, Don Draper will be an active part of Stonewall and decide to shack up with a younger man (I'm hoping it will be the blonde guy Cosgrove).

by Anonymousreply 1902/10/2013

There's a flamboyant gay latino man on Reba's Malibu Country. Nice to tick off a couple of minority boxes in one male package.

by Anonymousreply 2002/10/2013

Shameless has the gay son and he fucks guys in the show.

by Anonymousreply 2102/10/2013

Shameless US does not shy away from gay plotlines. Ian is a important character and his love life is a substantial part of the show. Entertaining little show.

I do think it is important to clarify how important the gay character is. There is a big difference between a gay recurring character who pops up in a supporting role and a gay series regular with real plotlines.

by Anonymousreply 2202/10/2013

Scandal.

by Anonymousreply 2302/10/2013
There's a flamboyant gay latino man on Reba's Malibu Country.

Complete with a Latino-fey accent .

by Anonymousreply 2402/10/2013

White Collar (Matt Bomer offscreen, the black woman onscreen)

by Anonymousreply 2502/10/2013

R24 - that's Jai Rodriguez. It's his first job since QUEER EYE FOR THE STRAIGHT GUY went off the air...

by Anonymousreply 2602/10/2013

Does Billy on the Street on the FUSE channel count?

by Anonymousreply 2702/10/2013

Don't forget all those gay dancing pro boys on "Dancing with the Stars"!

by Anonymousreply 2802/11/2013

Has anyone noticed a gay vibe between Raj and Stewart (owner of the comic book store) on "The Big Bang Theory?" It started last season and seems to be building very, very, very slowly. I hope the producers go for it.

by Anonymousreply 2902/11/2013

What about Danny and McGarrett on Hawaii 5-0? They bicker like two bitchy queens, and when James Caan guested his character even asked if the two of them were "an item". And we all know about Scott Caan in real life....

by Anonymousreply 3002/11/2013

There is a lesbian character on Chicago Fire.

by Anonymousreply 3102/11/2013

Ah, Scotty...

by Anonymousreply 3202/11/2013

[italic]Supernatural[/italic] has a recurring character, Charlie, who is an out lesbian.

by Anonymousreply 3302/11/2013

And Supernatural has the gay angel Castiel

by Anonymousreply 3402/11/2013

True Blood's Layfayette, Russell Edgington (sp), Steve Newlin, Pam, Tara and whomever they hook up with.

House of Lies's Roscoe Kaan (well, gender queer really)

by Anonymousreply 3502/11/2013

Who's the gay on Scandal?

by Anonymousreply 3602/11/2013

Does Shameless US show peen? In the first episode of Shameless UK, Dean Lennox Kelly who plays Kev, rolls over in bed and we see everything. That's the first inkling that Ian, who sees it happen, is gay.

by Anonymousreply 3702/11/2013

That scene is duplicated in the US version, r37. Big, flaccid peen and all.

by Anonymousreply 3802/11/2013

Did we ever do a thread where we suggest straight TV characters should be gay? That would be fun.

by Anonymousreply 3902/13/2013

Degrassi

by Anonymousreply 4002/14/2013

Hollyoaks

by Anonymousreply 4102/14/2013

R26 Jai hosted "Groomer Has It" on Animal Planet for two seasons. He did guest appearances on various TV shows since QEfSG.

by Anonymousreply 4202/14/2013

Fran Descher's Happily Divorced

The Carrie Diaries

Teen Wolf

Pretty Little Liars (lesbian)

American Horror Story: Asylum (lesbian / this one finished a couple of weeks ago)- First season had gay characters.

Banshee (minor character though)

by Anonymousreply 4302/14/2013

oops, Fran Drescher, of course.

by Anonymousreply 4402/14/2013

Bob's Burgers may not have explicitly gay characters (besides the guy on roller skates), but it has lots of gay character.

and Gene "I'm a Top" Belcher will be coming out any episode now

by Anonymousreply 4502/14/2013

The Office

SNL (Stefon)

Family Guy

The Simpsons

South Park

Breaking Bad (dead now)

2.5 Men (bisexual)

by Anonymousreply 4602/14/2013

R36 the White House Chief of Staff is gay and in a same sex marriage.

by Anonymousreply 4702/14/2013

Kevin Spacey on "House of Cards" is bisexual.

by Anonymousreply 4802/14/2013

R26, Jai had a guest appearance on Days, he played a guy Will was supposedly interested in.

The Carrie Diaries has a really cute gay character, Walt Reynolds. His storyline has barely started, but he did have a gay moment in episode 4. The show is doing horribly in the ratings though, so don't be surprised if it's canceled.

by Anonymousreply 4902/14/2013

White Collar: FBI agent, Diana, is a lesbian.

by Anonymousreply 5002/14/2013

Obviously, the gay cop on Southland...

by Anonymousreply 5102/14/2013
Jai had a guest appearance on Days, he played a guy Will was supposedly interested in.
No, Jai played a newscaster on Days. At the time, Will was not out as gay, not even to the viewers.

Anyway, I must admit Days are playing some pretty hot gay scenes. Today, they had Will dreaming of Sunny. He appeared in the shower, and they started kissing.

However, nothing was hotter than the drunk "straight" Will kissing some random dude in the tunnel.

by Anonymousreply 5202/15/2013

I know that, R52.. but the whole point of Jai's character was getting Will to figure out he was gay, basically.

by Anonymousreply 5302/15/2013

Sherlock BBC! Current if they continue one day.

by Anonymousreply 5402/15/2013

There's DL favorite Thor the male nurse on Nurse Jackie, which also houses O'Hara, a bisexual female doctor.

For another riveting bisexual chick, we have Kalinda on The Good Wife, which occassionally throws us a scene once in a blue moon featuring Alicia's bitchy but wimpy gay brother, Owen.

Felix on General Hospital is the Richard Simmons of the 21st century.

by Anonymousreply 5502/15/2013

AE has a story about a new CBS pilot called The Mcarthys.

"Jake Lacy will play gay character Ronnie in the new CBS pilot The McCarthys. "the smart, funny, neurotic son who came out to his family two years ago. He’s finally decided to move out and begin a life away from his family, but they keep finding ways to involve him in their drama."

This sounds interesting so I hope it gets picked up. There's also some shirtless pics around and he's kind of hot.

by Anonymousreply 5602/15/2013

r47, I don't watch Scandal, but I'm assuming you do and I have a question. Or anyone else who knows can answer to.

Tonight I saw a commercial for the new episode. Sam Page was on saying to Kerry Washington "You want me to be the first gay Governor of North Carolina?" She says, "Yup." He says, "OK, lets' find me a fake wife."

Is he the same character as the White House Chief of Staff that you mentioned in your post? Or is this another guy?

I'm wondering if that would make the show worth checking out. Sam Page is kind of cute, and he sure plays gay a lot.

by Anonymousreply 5702/22/2013

There's an Australian comedy show called Please Like Me with Josh Thomas. Thomas plays a neurotic dweeb who struggles with coming to terms with being gay while he's in his first gay relationship (and the guy is, like, hot).

by Anonymousreply 5803/08/2013

BBC's miniseries In the Flesh. Anything more may spoil the whole show. It's pretty intense though.

by Anonymousreply 5903/28/2013

There's hardly any gay characters on tv right now, that's the point. This looks really good though..

by Anonymousreply 6006/14/2014

Penny Dreadful anyone?

by Anonymousreply 6506/14/2014

R30 -- I thought Dan-O and McGarrett were a couple back when the original series was new!

by Anonymousreply 6606/14/2014

Sesame Street's Bert and Ernie. Bert confessed to me he was a bottom and loves it when Ernie does unspeakable things to him with a turkey baster.

by Anonymousreply 6706/14/2014

Did anyone catch Tyrant? What do we think? I thought it was fairly good, though a bit clichéd. And it's so obvious the guy playing the main character isn't Arab. That said, I did like the gay storyline.

The fact that they never mentioned Sammy being gay was very refreshing. They just let it play out, Sammy being confident and flirting with the other guy in the steam room said it all.

by Anonymousreply 6806/27/2014

I like Tyrant, good show. As to the gay son, Sammy, he is way too confident for a supposedly 16-year teen in an Muslem country.

by Anonymousreply 6906/27/2014

Allegedly "Vampire Diaries", but it might as well NOT have one.

True Blood of course.

by Anonymousreply 7006/27/2014

I disagree, R69. I think he's clueless and naive, just like many other guys his age. He just doesn't think. He seems a bit dumb, especially with him admiring his obviously crazy uncle. That says it all. His younger sister seems smarter and more enlightened though.

by Anonymousreply 7106/28/2014

Shows with gay (male) characters this summer:

The Night Shift, Tyrant, Days of our Lives, True Blood, Penny Dreadful, Eastenders (British), Emmerdale (British), A Place To Call Home (Australian).

by Anonymousreply 7206/29/2014

Looks like Dominion has a new gay character. He's hot too!

by Anonymousreply 7307/07/2014

"Shameless" has the best gay male plot line with Ian/Mickey of any show I can think of currently airing on US television (ignoring a gay niche show like Looking).

I honestly can't think of anything that beats it.

by Anonymousreply 7407/07/2014

Last week's Major Crimes had a blistering outing of Rusty the twink whore by his drug addled bio-mom.

by Anonymousreply 7507/07/2014

Hit The Floor (VH1) has a new gay storyline. It even had a guest appearance by Scott Evans!

by Anonymousreply 7607/26/2014

The Backlot's piece on Hit The Floor

by Anonymousreply 7707/26/2014

The actor who plays Sammi on "Tyrant" is at least 18-years old. I understand that Sammi is supposed to be 16, and his sister is older I believe.

by Anonymousreply 7807/26/2014

Degrassi, ok so it's Canadian, but it seems like it has a gay character and now possibly two.

by Anonymousreply 7908/01/2014

Video of the (possible) gay couple on Degrassi.

by Anonymousreply 8008/01/2014

Major Crimes has at least three.

by Anonymousreply 8108/01/2014

The blond lesbian copy on Rookie Blue.

by Anonymousreply 8208/01/2014

Lost Girl has a bisexual woman (Bo) and a lesbian (Lauren).

by Anonymousreply 8308/01/2014

R82, the question was GAY as in MALE.

by Anonymousreply 8408/01/2014

On "Last Tango in Halifax" (a PBS series and my favorite show on TV), one of the main characters is a lesbian (with her on-again, off-again GF). I also think her oldest son (occasionally bullied because he's "sensitive") will one day be coming out.

by Anonymousreply 8508/01/2014

I wonder if Thomas on "Downton Abbey" will ever have a boyfriend?

by Anonymousreply 8608/01/2014

OK, thanks for playing, R85. But again, the question was MALE. This website is for gay men, hence we have interest in gay male characters, not lesbians. You can take that sh*t with you to L Chat, thanks.

I wish someone could make a new thread with MALE in the headline, so we won't get a gazillion lesbian answers again, because nobody here cares about lesbian tv characters.

by Anonymousreply 8708/01/2014

Fine, R88. Go talk about lesbian characters on L Chat. And please.. it's not like the lesbians have a lack of representation. There's a lesbian on every tv show these days. Not so much for gay male characters.

by Anonymousreply 8908/01/2014

I'll just keep ignoring the troll at R90.

Here's current tv shows with gay characters:

True Blood

Shameless

Dominion

Penny Dreadful

Please Like Me

In The Flesh

Modern Family

Glee

Tyrant

Major Crimes

Hit The Floor

Degrassi

Teen Wolf

Masters Of Sex

The Night Shift

Days Of Our Lives

by Anonymousreply 9108/01/2014

In shameless US there are two gay characters that are in a relationship. Ian (one of the main characters) and mickey (the gansters son who is now also a main character) have a relationship throughout the entire show.

by Anonymousreply 9212/11/2014

Emmerdale (English), Degrassi (Canadian) and The Originals.

Empire starts on Fox in January.

by Anonymousreply 9312/11/2014

Yep R92, IMO Shameless is the television show that has the strongest gay (male) storyline. The relationship between Ian/Mickey has been fantastic with a powerhouse performance from Noel Fisher.

by Anonymousreply 9412/11/2014

Empire has an LGB character?

by Anonymousreply 9512/13/2014

The Flash - the police captain casually mentions his boyfriend sometimes.

by Anonymousreply 9612/13/2014

Just G, R95. His name is "Jamal" and he's played by Jussie Smollett.
The middle son, Jamal (Jussie Smollett), is a sensitive soul and musical prodigy who, unlike Hakeem, shies away from the spotlight. Jamal also happens to be gay, which infuriates and embarasses his father (Terrence Howard).

by Anonymousreply 9712/13/2014

hot

by Anonymousreply 9801/12/2015

How about bi characters?

by Anonymousreply 9901/19/2015

Captain Holt on "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" is openly gay.

There's the lesbian moms on "The Fosters," with their youngest son, Jude, in the "questioning" category.

I don't believe Rusty from "Major Crimes" has categorical stated that he's gay. He was a prostitute for a time but all his sexual activity was for pay.

by Anonymousreply 10001/19/2015

The detective on "The Affair", played by Victor Williams, is gay.

by Anonymousreply 10101/19/2015

While Rusty hasn't ever officially come out and said it, R100, he's had crushes on men for the last year or so and stopped seeing that girl he went to school with. One episode was all about his crush from the TV show he worked on - he asked the guy out but the guy said Rusty was too young. That should make it pretty clear he's gay.

by Anonymousreply 10201/20/2015

Did they ever renew "In The Flesh" or is it officially on the trash heap?

by Anonymousreply 10301/20/2015

Just to piss off R84 etc... Gillian Anderson in The Fall beds men and women.

by Anonymousreply 10401/20/2015

R103, it's been cancelled.

This is a new gay comedy, based on the life of Dan Savage.

by Anonymousreply 10505/14/2015

Quantico will have gay characters.

by Anonymousreply 10607/25/2015

Switched At Birth has a new gay character.

by Anonymousreply 10710/15/2015

On recent streaming shows there is

Gay male Titus on Unbreakble Kimmy Schmidt

Lesbian Tammy and bisexual Sarah on Transparent

by Anonymousreply 10810/15/2015

GH

Empire

TVD(Lesbians)

Brooklyn 99

WWHL

DOOL(Soon there won't be any more despite the claims of an anti-Will troll)

Modern Family

Black Sails

Major Crimes

by Anonymousreply 10910/15/2015

There's also:

The Walking Dead

A Place To Call Home

Quantico

The Middle

Please Like Me

Hit The Floor

Kingdom

Faking It

How To Get Away With Murder

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Soon:

Arrow

The Bold and the Beautiful (according to casting calls, though they might back out due to homophobic viewers)

by Anonymousreply 11010/15/2015

New gay on Switched at Birth?

by Anonymousreply 11110/15/2015

The sex scene on Please Like Me was surprisingly hot.

by Anonymousreply 11210/18/2015

The gay cop on the new brit show 'Cuffs' is hot!

by Anonymousreply 11310/29/2015

This should be restricted to shows with a significant gay character, someone that has a real plotline. Something like Agents of Shield R110 or the Flash just have minor gay characters which don't truly count.

by Anonymousreply 11410/29/2015

Cuffs just had a hot scene with Jake and Simon

by Anonymousreply 11511/05/2015

Kiss

by Anonymousreply 11611/08/2015

Telenovela

by Anonymousreply 11711/08/2015

Nashville has a gay male character and of course there is the closet case Carol on The Walking Dead.

by Anonymousreply 11811/08/2015

Alex comes out in gif.

by Anonymousreply 11911/14/2015

Is "Cuffs" showing in the US? It couldn't be on BBC America because that would mean people running that channel would care about quality.

by Anonymousreply 12011/14/2015

R120, no. It is however available online if you know where to look :)

by Anonymousreply 12111/14/2015

They haven't actually come out and said she's gay, but Marianne Jean-Baptiste's character on "Blindspot" was shown having liplocks with another woman in flashbacks.

by Anonymousreply 12211/14/2015

Your right r122 she's probably a lesbian unless they claim she's bi.

The Arrow just added a gay black character and has lesbian Nyssa daughter of Ra's.

DOOL is virtually GOOL-LESS

B&B is supposedly going to add a bi character.

Jane the Virgin has two lesbian characters

by Anonymousreply 12311/14/2015

James and Henry finally had sex on A Place To Call Home.

by Anonymousreply 12412/02/2015
The Arrow just added a gay black character and has lesbian Nyssa daughter of Ra's.

Right, another "I'm gay but I don't get a love life" character. Isn't it funny how the gay male characters never get to kiss their loved ones, yet the lesbian characters get to kiss and have sex all the time? The gay character on The Flash is engaged (I think he's married now actually), and when he thought his fiance was dead, he HUGGED him when he found out he was alive! WTF?! Had these two been women you'd have seen them making out, yet since they are two men all they get is a hug. Same with the gay character on Agents of SHIELD, doesn't get a love life, or like I said, the gay character on Arrow. And the list goes on and on and on. It never ends. They can show gay characters as much as they want, but what is the point if they can't show all of them, including their love lives? I still remember the actor who played one of the gay characters in Black Sails saying they cut back the gay storyline because the writers/showrunners/whoever got cold feet. Lesbian pirates are ok, but not gay ones! Sure, there's some exceptions, Shameless and HTGAWM, but they are definitely in the minority. DOOL was actually not bad in this respect either, until the show was de-gayed of course.

by Anonymousreply 12512/02/2015

R125 there people complaining that the previous writers didn't use the vets enough and focused too much on the gay story and that they were pushing a "gay agenda" such as when they had Will and Sonny get married or there marital problems on display. Those same people are glad with the new direction the show has taken with the vets on display more and other vets coming back while the gay stuff has been toned down.

by Anonymousreply 13112/27/2015

Why? Barely there gay characters shouldn't count.

by Anonymousreply 14102/26/2016

The GOP debates.

by Anonymousreply 14202/26/2016
Why? Barely there gay characters shouldn't count.

Because if I didn't there'd only be like 5 shows worth mentioning. Most gay male characters on tv are neutered and barely there. Thank god for British and other international soaps.. that's where I currently get my fix of gay storylines.. like Eastenders, Emmerdale, Hollyoaks and the new show Crashing.

by Anonymousreply 14302/26/2016

The new flagship BBC spy drama, The Night Manager has a gay character; Major Corkoran. Plays fixer and right hand man to main baddie played by Hugh Laurie. Russell Tovey was in first episode too (might be in more, don't know)

by Anonymousreply 14402/26/2016

Mr Robot and Sense8

by Anonymousreply 14502/26/2016

Thanks for making me aware of that, R144, I didn't know. I've always been a fan of Tom Hiddleston but now I've got even more reason to watch. Again it just further proves that international tv shows, mainly British, are miles ahead of the good ol' USA when it comes to tv shows with gay characters. It's a sad state for gay tv shows in the US. Just last year, in 2015 (!) we had not one, but two shows, with male characters faking being gay. We also had one show where a gay male character had sex with a woman. That's how far we have come! It's absolutely shocking in this day and age. I'm sorry, I just don't trust American shows anymore. Not after the atrocities that was last year. I had to stop watching three shows because of their portrayal of gay men, it was wile. It was like we were back in the 1950s. Even more mind boggling is that these shows have gay showrunners. Actual gay men write horrific gay characters. I just don't get it. Do they suffer from internalized homophobia or something?

by Anonymousreply 14602/27/2016

Crazy Ex Girlfriend now has a gay and a bi character.

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia had one of its characters coming out, only to go back in. Ugh..

Archie will hopefully be made into a tv show, and it'll have a gay character.

by Anonymousreply 14703/24/2016

R145, Mr Robot's bi character is a joke. He had sex with a guy ONCE in order to get information. He is married to a woman and has a kid. We haven't seen him with guys after that one scene. Sure... there's an older gay on the show too, but come on. Would be a lot more interesting if they could actually develop the bisexual guy further, but they're probably too afraid to piss off the fanboys. Funny that they don't seem to mind lesbians though!

by Anonymousreply 14803/24/2016

Once Upon A Time .... Dorothy Gale, Red Riding Hood = lesbian couple

by Anonymousreply 14904/29/2016

Nobody cares about lesbians, R149. This is a website for gay men.

by Anonymousreply 15006/06/2016
Would be a lot more interesting if they could actually develop the bisexual guy further, but they're probably too afraid to piss off the fanboys.

If they cared about that they wouldn't have done it in the first place. They choose to have him engage in a very graphic sex scene with another guy, it wasn't some safe for straight guys cutaway.

I don't know if anyone cares about International shows, I mean.. people should, considering the badly written gay characters on American tv. They usually fall into either of these camps: barely there, neutered, stereotypical or all three. I find International shows much better at portraying gay male characters. It's funny but the US seem to have no problem portraying lesbian characters, they only seem to freak out when portraying gay male characters, never allowing them to get any screen time or love life.

Anyway.. here are some shows from other countries:

Emmerdale (England)

Hollyoaks (England)

EastEnders (England)

Coronation Street (England)

Holby City (England)

Sirens (England)

Neighbours (Australia)

Shortland Street (England)

Merli (Spain, Catalan)

Spangas (The Netherlands)

Le Secret des Balls (France)

Un posto al sole (Italy)

Schitt's Creek (Canada)

Orphan Black (Canada)

Øyevitne (Norway)

D83 (Germany)

The Walking Dead's much belated gay guy sucked. Of course we get an effeminate milquetoast instead of one of the swashbuckling straight guys. Have they killed him off yet? I hope so, such a disappointment.

by Anonymousreply 15506/06/2016

Maybe they will r155 since American tv shows like killing off gay characters.

by Anonymousreply 15606/06/2016

R155, are you watching FTWD? Because they have a black gay guy who isn't stereotypical at all. He's quite important to the show too.

I know! Gay men that use words like "Milquetoast" are so embarrassing...

by Anonymousreply 16106/28/2016

R158 some of those shows were already mentioned in the barely there and few of those shows nobody really cares that much about anymore.

by Anonymousreply 16206/28/2016

I know, R162. Gay storylines on American tv are awful. They are always neutered and/or barely there. Weird they don't seem to have that problem with lesbians though. Lesbian characters always get to have explicit sex on tv while gay male characters don't, hmm. This is why I mostly watch British shows. There are gays on Corrie, Hollyoaks, Eastenders, Emmerdale and Holby City. At least these characters are not neutered.

by Anonymousreply 16306/28/2016

R160, Riverdale is a new show that will premiere early next year. It's based on the Archie comics and will include the gay character Kevin Keller.

by Anonymousreply 16406/28/2016

Can't forget that when gays are no longer deemed "perfect" especially gay males the solution on American tv is to kill them off.

by Anonymousreply 16506/28/2016

Ugh.. I was so excited for the gay storyline on Animal Kingdom but now I realize it's yet another storyline with minimal screen time. The gay guy had zero gay related scenes in the new episode. At least the gay guy is not just barely there, that's something I guess. He gets stuff to do.. just no gay stuff. I always wanted a bad ass gay character, I guess he's as close as we're gonna get, even though they went with the cliche of the "weakest" male in the family, the outsider, being gay. And he's also a self hating closet case, sigh. I mean.. in that family, which his uber macho brothers it makes sense, it's realistic, but it still feels like a stupid trope we have seen a million times before. I just want a badass gay character who is out and proud, sorta like Connor on HTGAWM before he got a boyfriend and became lame. He wasn't exactly "badass", but at least he was out and proud and SEXUAL. One of two ain't so bad, but yeah.. been a while since we had an Omar type character (from The Wire).

It's been mentioned multiple times but How to Get Away With Murder is still probably the best representation of gays on American TV.

by Anonymousreply 16907/03/2016

Agatha Raisin (Sky1 UK) In the Club (BBC1 UK but just finished) Rovers (Sky1 UK, think this might have just finished too)

The new Dr Who spin-off, Class, will be featuring a gay character. The news was released after Orlando which is the 'today' Patrick Ness is referring to in the tweet

by Anonymousreply 17207/03/2016

I don't know if the show has been mentioned already, but SyFy's Killjoys features a regular guest character who is gay. In the premiere episode of the second season Aaron Ashmore's character and the gay character pretend to be a gay couple and bicker at each other in order to cause a distraction. It's pretty funny.

by Anonymousreply 17307/03/2016

r173 I thought he was gay but they never actually said in the first series of Killjoys. Hope he'll do a little more this Season

by Anonymousreply 17407/03/2016

There were a couple on Game of Thrones (Loras, Renly, Oberyn Martell), but now they've all been killed off except for Yara.

Desperate Housewives -- Bree's son, and Gabby's gay pool boy or gardener or whoever, who Carlos beat up because he thought he was having an affair with Gabby.

Reno 911 -- Lt. Dangle, and Terry, the roller-skating, drug-taking mincer played by Nick Swardson.

ABC News -- "Disney prince" (gag!) puff-piece mincer played by Gio Benitez.

by Anonymousreply 19307/03/2016

The Match Game

by Anonymousreply 19407/03/2016

I've said it before but I'll say it again, British tv shows are miles ahead of American tv shows when it comes to gay characters. There are so many gay characters on British soaps that it's hard to keep track. There are Lawrence, Ronnie, Finn, Aaron and Robert on Emmerdale. Then there are Sean, Todd and Billy on Coronation Street. Hollyoaks has John Paul, James, Ste, Harry and probably more too. Holby City has Dominic and Isaac. EastEnders has Johnny, Steven, Ben and Paul.

by Anonymousreply 19507/06/2016

Not much on now during the summer, but Animal Kingdom is good and Dead of Summer starts next week. Looking (the movie) will air late July. Hit the Floor special will air later this summer. The Nigh Shift has a gay character too and can be seen on NBC. Hopefully Luke Macfarlane will reprise his role as Drew's boyfriend.

by Anonymousreply 19607/06/2016

But the British characters are mostly so effeminate, weird, or unattractive

by Anonymousreply 19707/06/2016

Brit gay characters rarely are hot masculine hunks

by Anonymousreply 19807/06/2016

The Brit show Cuffs (lasted only one season) has masculine looking gay guys. But I guess that's why it only lasted one season. Not stereo typically gay enough.

by Anonymousreply 19907/06/2016

Todd and Billy are finally getting together on Coronation Street.

by Anonymousreply 20007/07/2016

The Jim Gaffigan Show

by Anonymousreply 20107/07/2016

I think Aaron on Emmerdale is hot and masculine.

by Anonymousreply 20207/07/2016

Both Aaron and Robert are masculine. Quantico, The 100 and Days should be extremely ashamed of what they have done to their gay characters.

by Anonymousreply 20307/07/2016

Call the Midwife has a lesbian couple.

by Anonymousreply 20407/07/2016

R203, I called it with The 100. They only allow lesbians to kiss and have sex on The CW. The gay (male) characters are neutered, as always. They have only kissed once, it's pathetic.

by Anonymousreply 20507/07/2016

I watch the British version of "Call the Midwife' because PBS in America cuts scenes with the lesbian couple.

by Anonymousreply 20607/07/2016

I think there have only ever been 2 gay male kisses on the CW the one you mention r205 and the the one on the Originals and not too long after the kiss on the Originals was one of the gay characters killed and the other one eventually neutered and now barely appears. Your right lesbians can kiss up a storm on that network because that's ok to them and when you hear about a gay character on the CW it's usually a lesbian character.

by Anonymousreply 20707/07/2016

R207, like I said only lesbians are allowed to have sex. Gay male characters do get to kiss, although barely. Bryan and Miller have after one season had ONE lame ass kiss. You can bet your ass had these been lesbians they would have been making out in every episode and had at least one or two sex scenes by now.

by Anonymousreply 20807/08/2016

It seems that now when a show announces an lgbt character it's either a lesbian or trans character. That show Faking It had a gay male character get with transman and then shames the gay male character into being with the trans character. When gay male characters are killed they don't get the same kind of coverage and outrage as lesbians and trans characters and if a show were to even harm a single hair on a lesbian or trans character's head then there is all kinds of outrage.

by Anonymousreply 20907/08/2016

Todd and Billy finally kissed on Coronation Street.

by Anonymousreply 21007/08/2016

R209, I completely agree with everything you said. It's funny that there was such an outrage when three lesbian characters were killed when lesbian characters outnumber gay male characters 10:1. They could kill half of all the lesbian characters on tv and there'd STILL be more lesbian characters on tv. Not only that, lesbian characters are not neutered. They get much better representation than gay male characters. That's why I can't take the lesbians seriously when they complain. They have no idea how good they have it. I've seen shows where there are lesbian characters and gay male characters on the same show, the lesbians get to make out and have sex, the gay male characters are neutered and barely get any screen time. But it's like whatever. I'm used to it. It sucks but I don't see it changing any time soon.

by Anonymousreply 21107/08/2016

The gay kiss on Coronation Street if anyone wanna watch.

by Anonymousreply 21207/08/2016

Love Daniel Brocklebank

by Anonymousreply 21307/08/2016

Me too, R213.

by Anonymousreply 21407/09/2016

No but seriously, Corrie has been very good lately. I recommend checking it out. You can start here.

by Anonymousreply 21507/11/2016

This is on it's way

by Anonymousreply 21607/15/2016

Thanks, R216. Once again we need to watch British shows to get good gay characters. The UK has always been miles ahead of the US with gays on tv. I mean, there are some exceptions, but I'd say 9 out of 10 times gay characters in the US are portrayed really horrible, always being neutered and barely getting any screen time.

by Anonymousreply 21707/15/2016

Animal Kingdom is very good. I wouldn't bother with Dead of Summer, the only gay guy doesn't have a love interest.

by Anonymousreply 21907/16/2016

Mac FINALLY came out on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

by Anonymousreply 22007/16/2016

An actor who plays a masculine gay character on a European soap.

by Anonymousreply 22207/16/2016

And what actor/show/character is that R222?

by Anonymousreply 22307/16/2016

r223 that's Ronny who's an actor on a European soap called Secret Lives

by Anonymousreply 22407/16/2016

Okay that's a good masculine guy

by Anonymousreply 22507/17/2016

We've lost so many gay characters this year :( Shane on Faking It, Will on Nashville etc.

by Anonymousreply 22607/17/2016

Wait, I haven't kept up with Nashville. What happened to Will R226?

by Anonymousreply 22707/17/2016

I assume R226 meant that Nashville was cancelled. It was picked up by another network, though.

by Anonymousreply 22807/17/2016

Ok good. Yeah it was picked up by CMT.

by Anonymousreply 22907/17/2016

Too bad the rest of it is an unwatchable shitshow, R169.

by Anonymousreply 23007/17/2016

r227 At the moment, he's back with Kyle Dean Massey's character. At. The. Moment.

by Anonymousreply 23107/17/2016

We did lose a Will named Will Horton but Will Lexington will be back on a new network.

by Anonymousreply 23207/17/2016

R232, honestly if it never came back I would be ok with it. The writing for Will as been very poor. I have never seen a more miserable gay character. I understand that Nashville is a conservative, possibly homophobic city. But dear god why did they always have to write Will being sad or depressed. He never got "happy" storylines. Either he was trying to kill himself, or he was the victim of a gay bashing, or song-writers refused to work with him because he was gay and the list goes on and on and on. I just couldn't watch it anymore.

by Anonymousreply 23307/20/2016

I'm sure it has been mentioned before, but I think it's worth mentioning again. Anthony D Langford is back with his soaps column, now on TVSource Magazine's website. I'll link his latest post.

by Anonymousreply 23407/20/2016

We're now down two gay characters thanks to EastEnders and Mr Robot.

by Anonymousreply 23507/23/2016

So far I'm really liking Dom & Isaac.

by Anonymousreply 23607/25/2016

Tyrant had a gay sex scene.

by Anonymousreply 23707/28/2016

Is that a new scene on Tyrant?

by Anonymousreply 23807/29/2016

Yes, R238, from the new episode.

by Anonymousreply 23907/29/2016

Got a link to that scene?

by Anonymousreply 24007/29/2016

Sorry, it's not up on Youtube. Guess you just have to watch the new episode.

by Anonymousreply 24107/29/2016

Spanish tv show from Spain called Merli has gay characters.

by Anonymousreply 24208/05/2016

New gay character coming to The Originals.

by Anonymousreply 24308/11/2016

Gay or lesbian?

by Anonymousreply 24408/11/2016

R244, probably lesbian. They don't allow gay male characters on comic book tv shows.

by Anonymousreply 24508/11/2016

r244, my money is on Cisco from The Flash. I never believed his crush on Golden Glider. He might even hook up with his frenemy Hartley Rathaway.

by Anonymousreply 24608/11/2016

The Flash is a good possiblity, because they feature different timelines, worlds, and stuff. It may very well be that in some alternate universe or timeline one of the main characters is gay or willing to explore his gay sexuality or bisexuality.

by Anonymousreply 24708/11/2016

R245, isn't The Pied Piper and his police chief bf recurring characters on The Flash?

by Anonymousreply 24808/11/2016
What are the current TV shows with gay characters?

The Olympics

by Anonymousreply 24908/11/2016

Sammy, the teenage son on "Tyrant"

by Anonymousreply 25008/11/2016

You are living in a dream world r246. Cisco is the most popular character on "The Flash", all the fanboys love them, they aren't going to make him gay.

I could almost see it being Captain Cold, just because Wentworth has been so vocal that he sees the character as pansexual.

Arrow already has a prominent gay character in Mr. Terrific, so won't be them.

Maybe someone from "Supergirl". I don't watch this show but isn't there some character all the fans said seemed gay?

by Anonymousreply 25108/11/2016

Supergirl is bringing on lesbian cop Maggie Sawyer.

by Anonymousreply 25208/11/2016

The CW Seed is bringing the first gay superhero series, The Ray

by Anonymousreply 25308/11/2016

Seed?

by Anonymousreply 25408/12/2016

One that just ended in Australia was the four episode series on ATV called "Barracuda" based on the Christos Tsiolkas novel.

The first three episodes have been put up on youtube. I expect the person to eventually add the fourth. If not, you can find them on Vodlocker as well.

by Anonymousreply 25508/13/2016

R252, TOLD YA! I said it would be a lesbian and I was right. DC is still TERRIFIED of portraying gay men on any of their shows.

by Anonymousreply 25608/13/2016

In other news, CBS has a diversity problem..

by Anonymousreply 25708/13/2016

R255 Some of the gay bits from Barracuda, rather apropos due to the Olympics right now.

by Anonymousreply 25808/17/2016

Big Brother 18 has all of the hot guys being homoerotic, rubbing on each other, sleeping together, talking about gay porn, and the girls are just scratching their heads wondering, WTF?

by Anonymousreply 25908/17/2016

Is Mark Indelicato even getting his own episode centric storyline in Dead of Summer?

by Anonymousreply 26008/18/2016

The Duke of Sandringham on Outlander but he had his head chopped off in Season 2.

by Anonymousreply 26108/18/2016

by Anonymousreply 26208/18/2016

Regarding Shadowhunters ... The "Malec" kiss looks hot. .. Is the show any good?

by Anonymousreply 26308/19/2016

Bruno and Pol from Merli

by Anonymousreply 26408/19/2016

It gets good towards the middle of the season and the last few episodes were great IMO R263

I personally recommend it but it's probably not for everyone.

by Anonymousreply 26508/19/2016

I was watcging 3rd episode 1st season of Mr Robot I thought someone put in QAF by mistake

by Anonymousreply 26608/19/2016

Jude and Noah

by Anonymousreply 26708/23/2016

That's gay equality according to possible future cult leader FCF r261.

by Anonymousreply 26808/23/2016

R268 FCF would love Hollyoaks. There have been so many gay and bisexual guys, that it's fully anticipated that one of them will die almost every year. Innocent Kieron was murdered by Niall as part of his revenge plan against the McQueen family. (Kieron was John Paul McQueen's lover.) Presumably sexflexible Walker was run over by a train during a fight with Brendan. Brendan, who murdered others himself, was gunned down by the police and almost died, but then he was sent to prison for life. Doug was killed after a bomb exploded. Danny was the victim in a not-so-random car accident. Lockie was murdered by his own brother, then dumped in a lake. Equal opportunity death is pretty much status quo ,,, lol!

by Anonymousreply 26908/23/2016

Not a current show but one starting on the USA Network in October; saw the trailer for a show called Eyewitness during tonight's Mr Robot.

What caught me is that in the first seconds it shows two teenage boys kissing and sneaking into a shed at night to have sex. Then they witness a murder and get attacked. The rest of the series seems to be focused on the female cop who is investigating this killing in a rural town. The scene with the boys reminded me of the movie "Dream Boy".

by Anonymousreply 27008/25/2016

Not seeing anything gay in this trailer. Guess there must be an uncut version somewhere R270

by Anonymousreply 27108/25/2016

R271 The trailer at Entertainment Weekly (below) has the gay bits.

This appears to be an adaptation of the 2014 Norwegian miniseries, Øyevitne (Eyewitness). I've seen that recommended (with English captions) on youtube. Might be worth a look-see as well.

by Anonymousreply 27208/25/2016

Yeah, Øyevitne is the Norwegian miniseries of Eyewitness (6 parts). The boys are known as Philip & Henning. You can watch it with English subtitles at the following youtube channel. (Ignore the note about Swedish, the subtitles are English). To turn the English on, just hit the "CC" button on the bar below the video.

by Anonymousreply 27308/25/2016

The LPGA Open

by Anonymousreply 27408/25/2016

Well, Dead of Summer was a total waste of time in regards of the gay character. No episode centric episode (there could have been potential for one featuring his kick-ass abuelita who taught him how to contact the dead).

by Anonymousreply 27508/29/2016

Can't say I'm surprised R275

by Anonymousreply 27608/29/2016

SC4 at the BBC has the soap from Wales (with English subs), Pobol y Cwm featuring Iolo & Tyler. They're currently planning their wedding.

The collection: Period fashion drama set in post world war 2 Paris starring Tom Riely as bisexual designer Claude Sabine

by Anonymousreply 28509/07/2016

r285. Thank you for the suggestion. It looks interesting.

by Anonymousreply 28609/08/2016

Not sure if the character is indeed gay, but there is a character in Cinemax's Original Series Quarry that comes off as a bit on the gay side (in the trailer it's the guy who hammers the nails in the baseball bat, played by Damon Herriman). Plus in the pilot the lead, Logan Marshall-Green, has a brief full frontal nude shot when he jumps in a pool.

by Anonymousreply 28709/10/2016

Apparently there's an Amazon/BBC series called The Collection with a gay character played by Tom Riley. Haven't seen it myself

by Anonymousreply 28809/10/2016

r288 see r285.

by Anonymousreply 28909/10/2016

I would but he's on my ignore list R289

by Anonymousreply 29009/10/2016

I think R287 may be right about Quarry. Last episode, the character you mentioned (his name is Buddy on IMDB) seemed to be make subtle moves on the lead character. Later, Buddy had a meeting with a gun dealer where the dealer showed him a gun with a pink handle, as a special extra deal. When Buddy asked "why do you think I'd like this?", the dealer said, "well, cause you're queer, aren't you?". Buddy got an annoyed look on his face but he didn't correct the dealer. Buddy did kill him later, though, with extreme prejudice.

by Anonymousreply 29109/20/2016

So Todd and Billy broke up on yesterday's Corrie, but Bruno Langley (Todd) gave a fantastic performance. It's well worth the watch imo.

by Anonymousreply 29209/20/2016

I think the character of "Malcolm Levitan" known as "Lev" is still recurring in AMC's "Halt and Catch Fire." Actor August Emerson.

by Anonymousreply 29309/21/2016

Possible gay on Mr Robot. Cute Swedish psychopath Tyrell Wellick said that he loves the lead character Elliot. We won't see how he shows this love until next year as tonight was the season finale.

by Anonymousreply 29409/21/2016

That character on Quarry (BUDDY) is showing more signs that he is a gay man - last night he was shown sitting in a gay bar. A couple of guys come in and he runs over and starts yelling at one about "where were you?" and bad-mouthing the guy he is with. Looked like a case of jealousy at his "friend" being with a new man.

by Anonymousreply 295Last Sunday at 1:11 PM

If I'm not mistaken, I think Jeremy Jordan said in an interview that he feels his character should be gay, so perhaps the producers/writers have decided to indulge his suggestion?

I have not read this entire thread but did anyone mention Andre Braugher's Captain Holt character on "Brooklyn Nine-Nine"? He also has a white husband on the show.

Haven't seen it myself since it's a Canadian show an not sure it's available outside of Canada, but Kristopher Turner plays the gay brother of the main character on the show "This Life"

Nickelodeon's "The Loud House" has the recurring Harold & Howard McBride. They're Clyde McBride's overprotective fathers. Clyde is the best friend of Lincoln Loud, the main character of the animated series. Harold and Howard are voiced by Wayne Brady and Michael McDonald.

Holby City has been mentioned and here's a pic of Isaac and Dom. I haven't watched last night's episode, but the week before they decided to move in together.

I'm ambivalent about Supernatural but the other week God came out as bisexual. They've also had a married gay hunter couple who survived the episode and, who knows, might be back next season as they were very well received
