When you look at the following picture, what's the first thing that comes to mind?

And what's your interpretation of the portrait?

You may post other portraits on this thread if you like.

by Anonymousreply 2402/04/2013

The first thought I had was that that is an urban landscape and not a portrait.

by Anonymousreply 102/03/2013

I'm reminded of Bogie, Marilyn, Elvis, and James Dean.

by Anonymousreply 202/03/2013

They look like nighthawks.

But I like the other one with Marilyn, Jimmy and Bogie. (I forget the fourth guy.)

by Anonymousreply 302/03/2013

It reminds me of the diner in Pleasantville.

by Anonymousreply 402/03/2013

All that glass makes the building look structurally unsound, like the ceiling could collapse at any moment.

by Anonymousreply 502/03/2013

The great Darin Morgan X-Files episode, "Jose Chung's From Outer Space," wherein Mulder eats a piece of pie for every question he asks the diner attendant.

by Anonymousreply 602/03/2013

Reminds me of Blvd. of Broken Dreams

by Anonymousreply 702/03/2013

Nostalgia for white people.

by Anonymousreply 802/03/2013

Oh, Edward Hopper.

His work is so moody. Evocative. And frankly, wildly overrated.

by Anonymousreply 902/03/2013

Well. OP, the guy facing away is a serial murderer. He's about to pull a gun, then force the counter guy to lock up and draw the shades. Then he'll tie them all up, gag and rape them all with an immersible blender and serrated knife, and finally dismember and boil them, and pour the "evidence" down the oil drain.

by Anonymousreply 1002/03/2013

You watch too many CSI shows, R10.

by Anonymousreply 1102/03/2013

She's going to get raped and killed.

by Anonymousreply 1202/03/2013

That they used to dress up in a suit and tie back then....if it was painted today, everyone would be wearing t-shirts and jeans.

by Anonymousreply 1302/03/2013

Okay, anyone wanna analyze this Sargeant portrait?

by Anonymousreply 1402/03/2013

That looks like my Uncle Phil, R14. Except he prefers taffeta.

by Anonymousreply 1502/03/2013

That Sargent protrait looks like Rupert Everett in one of his favorite frocks.

Balthus

by Anonymousreply 1602/03/2013

R14, the Sergeant portrait reminds me of Broadway actress Judy Kuhn.

by Anonymousreply 1702/03/2013

The Sargeant painting...the woman looks like she's hiding something. Could the red book be something significant? Was she playing the piano when she should not have been? Or reading the book or music that was not supposed to be read?

Or she could just be standing by a piano.

by Anonymousreply 1802/03/2013

This.

Perfection.

by Anonymousreply 1902/03/2013

R16 is a portrait of Natasha Lyonne coming off a coke binge and showing off her new bra.

by Anonymousreply 2002/04/2013

OP, since we're discussing our favorite portraits like "Nighthawks," can we also discuss our favorite sculptures like Fallingwater and the Robie House?

by Anonymousreply 2102/04/2013

Sure r21.

by Anonymousreply 2202/04/2013

[quote]But I like the other one with Marilyn, Jimmy and Bogie. (I forget the fourth guy.)

Seriously, you didn't recognize Elvis?!

by Anonymousreply 2302/04/2013

When I posted that, the Elvis one hadn't appeared on the thread yet.
