Films with great direction despite weak screenplays

From the Ben Affleck thread.

I suggested 3 off the top of my head:

THE SOUND OF MUSIC (dir. Robert Wise)

SUSPIRIA (dir. Dario Argento)

FAHRENHEIT 451 (dir. François Truffaut).

Can you name others?

Most of Malick's filmography. He is a terrible screenwriter but a solid/great director.

I would second that, r7. BADLANDS is about the only one I can think of that has an actually good screenplay.

In EASY RIDERS, RAGING BULLS, Peter Biskinds argues that most of the wunderkind directors of the late60s/early 70s Hollywood Renaissance got into huge trouble when their success at directing convinced them they were such great auteurs that they could write great original screenplays as well as direct well. So they produced a whole series of flops that derailed their reputations, in some cases permanently:

Francis Ford Coppola -- ONE FROM THE HEART

Michael Cimino -- HEAVEN'S GATE

William Friedkin -- CRUISING

Peter Bogdanovich -- AT LONG LAST LOVE and NICKELODEON

Alien 3.

No matter what you think of the film, if you read the script you realize Fincher gave the producers a much better film than they had any right to expect.

The Big Sleep, even if it was a Faulkner screenplay - The movie's reworking of the plot doesn't make much sense, but Howard Hawk's direction created enough good scenes and mood to carry the movie.

Lawrence of Arabia

The Birds

Magic Mike

Brokeback Mountain

The Dark Knight Returns

It's usually not ALL a matter of the director that redeems a weak screenplay.

Natural Born Killers. Oliver Stone's choices made this film a nightmare painting in motion. The script, however was really thin.

Dressed to Kill

Second Alien 3; National Born Killers, as well.

Magic Mike and The Dark Knight Returns were both pieces of shit and do not belong on this list.

by Anonymousreply 1802/03/2013

The Dark Knight Returns was one of the worst movies I've ever seen.
