Pretty Woman

I know it's supposed to be Julia Roberts breakthrough, iconic performance. But I really don't get what she brought to the table that was THAT unique for the role.

Unlike Steel Magnolias, where I feel she WAS Shelby, any of the following could have done Pretty Women just as well, if not better:

Meg Ryan

Molly Ringwald

Ally Sheedy

Jasmine Guy

Valerie Bertinelli

Jamie Lee Curtis

Elizabeth Shoe

Robin Givens

Ricki Lake

Nancy McKeon

Bonnie Hunt

Pam Dawber

There was really nothing that Roberts personally brought to the table that made it her movie.

by Anonymousreply 15111/29/2013

Molly Ringwald turned down Pretty Woman.

by Anonymousreply 101/28/2013

There are any number of actresses who could have done it better - Jennifer Tilly, Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Oprah Winfrey. I mean, the list is endless.

by Anonymousreply 201/28/2013

I always thought she was typecast as the stupid, gauche whore.

by Anonymousreply 301/28/2013

OP, just out of curiosity, are you the same person who can't understand the appeal of All About Eve?

by Anonymousreply 401/28/2013

You bring nothing special to the table, OP. Why are you breathing? It offends us.

by Anonymousreply 501/28/2013

If you seriously think Valerie Bertinelli would have been as good in Pretty Woman as Julia Roberts, then there is no possibility of convincing you otherwise.

You're a lost cause.

by Anonymousreply 601/28/2013

That could've been a big comeback vehicle for Shelley Duvall.

by Anonymousreply 701/28/2013

Molly has said that she was never given an official offer to do the movie. Hers was one of many names considered.

by Anonymousreply 801/28/2013

Lisa Whelchel was the first choice. She turned it down so they settled on Julia.

by Anonymousreply 901/28/2013

Shelley Winters!

by Anonymousreply 1001/28/2013

Gary Marshall originally wanted Madonna for the role, when the movie was called 3000.

Madonna turned it down to make Dick Tracy and fuck Warren Beatty.

True story. Google it.

3000, the original title, is of course the amount of money Gere offers Roberts.

by Anonymousreply 1101/28/2013

Ally Sheedy would have been an interesting Pretty Woman.

by Anonymousreply 1201/28/2013

Speaking of Dick Tracy, isn't it funny how that movie is totally forgotten today? It was a big hit at the time and had a ton of merchandising tie-ins but now you never hear about it.

by Anonymousreply 1301/28/2013

[all posts by right wing shit-stain # a removed.]

by Anonymousreply 1401/28/2013

Lucy wanted to do it, but Gary Morton didn't want her working for someone else named Garry.

by Anonymousreply 1501/28/2013

Neigh! Neigh!

by Anonymousreply 1601/28/2013

Mimi Kennedy turned it down first, then Lorna Patterson.

by Anonymousreply 1701/28/2013

[quote]Nancy McKeon

They would have had to have changed the title to "Bitch-Faced Woman."

by Anonymousreply 1801/28/2013

Michelle Pfeiffer would have been the best for it.

by Anonymousreply 1901/28/2013

Karen Bllack was being considered as well...but her lazy eye was needed for a TV movie of the week.

by Anonymousreply 2001/28/2013

Shelley Hack, Sally Struthers and Sally Kellerman were all busy.

by Anonymousreply 2101/28/2013

[quote] They would have had to have changed the title to "Bitch-Faced Woman."

I keep imagining Debi Mazar starring in that movie.

by Anonymousreply 2201/28/2013

Bitch faced woman

Walking down the street

Bitch faced woman

Will kick you in the teeth

Bitch faced woman

Inhale her toxic queef...

by Anonymousreply 2301/28/2013

by Anonymousreply 2401/28/2013

Julia made the role her own.

by Anonymousreply 2501/28/2013

drink your juice Shelby!

by Anonymousreply 2601/28/2013

I think Bette Midler could have rocked this role.

by Anonymousreply 2701/28/2013

You mean except for the "pretty" part?

by Anonymousreply 2801/28/2013

I saw Pretty Woman on a date when it first came out. What did she have? She was a fresh face at the time, girl next door type, enthusiastic, comedic. Her character triumphs in the end and she was part of the fairytale.

by Anonymousreply 2901/28/2013

I was being completely serious with my post.

And yes, I do think Bertinelli could have rocked the role. Julia was not convincing in that hooker outfit. She had the posture and strut of a man.

by Anonymousreply 3001/28/2013

I was being facetious, R28.

by Anonymousreply 3101/28/2013

That's not a pretty list, OP.

Molly Ringwald? She would've gummed up the screen.

by Anonymousreply 3201/28/2013

How plump was Valerie in the early 90s?

by Anonymousreply 3301/28/2013

That list is fucking hilarious, OP! Pam Dawber?! Oh, my sides! Seriously, W&W for you!

by Anonymousreply 3401/28/2013

OP, you idiot. Don't you have better things to do with your time and life than think up such utterly stupid points of conversation?

Have you no life at all?

by Anonymousreply 3501/28/2013

I think a woman of color should have been considered.

by Anonymousreply 3601/28/2013

This is what Julia brought to the role...

by Anonymousreply 3701/28/2013

[quote] I think a woman of color should have been considered

Gosh, yes!

Because a black woman had never played a prostitute before.....

by Anonymousreply 3801/28/2013

I believe when the script was originally shopped around as 3000 it was supposed to star Kathy Moriarty and Sean Connery and was supposed to be much grittier.

by Anonymousreply 3901/28/2013

I thought this was a serious thread until I saw you had Nancy McKeon on your list.

by Anonymousreply 4001/28/2013

I hated Julia Roberts for years. Now that I see the crop of younger actresses I appreciate her. Watching Devil Wears Prada I kept imagining if Roberts had played the Hathaway role how much better it would have been. Roberts is incredibly limited but she's honest and like her or not in her early roles like PRETTY WOMAN, her honesty comes through.

by Anonymousreply 4101/28/2013

Pam dawber ?really

by Anonymousreply 4201/28/2013

I would have loved Jasmine Guy in this role... It would have been the campest movie ever.

by Anonymousreply 4301/28/2013

[quote] Watching Devil Wears Prada I kept imagining if Roberts had played the Hathaway role how much better it would have been.

Except the actress needed to be younger than Meryl Streep - a generation or more. Julia is younger but in that role would have come off like a Jerri Blank.

Practically anyone would have been better in the role of Andie, however, than Anne Hathaway.

by Anonymousreply 4401/28/2013

Maybe they should of got one of the cast of the golden girls

by Anonymousreply 4501/28/2013

ugh! Roberts was a disaster in Steel Magnolias. Her big "drink your juice" scene is high camp because Roberts cannot act if she isn't doing her big horsy laugh. And don't get me started on that accent.

by Anonymousreply 4601/28/2013

I dislike Julia, but she was THE movie star of the 1990s. She's like Tom Cruise. I hate them both (him more), but denying that they had It is just silly.

by Anonymousreply 4701/28/2013

Should HAVE.

by Anonymousreply 4801/28/2013

What about Pia Zadora?

by Anonymousreply 4901/28/2013

Wasn't rikki lake pretty chunky back then..?

by Anonymousreply 5001/28/2013

[quote]but she was THE movie star of the 1990s

by Anonymousreply 5101/28/2013

by Anonymousreply 5201/28/2013

Samantha Mathis would have nailed it.

by Anonymousreply 5301/28/2013

If Molly Ringwald starred in the movie it would have been called "Pretty Ugly".

by Anonymousreply 5401/28/2013

[quote]If Molly Ringwald starred in the movie it would have been called "Pretty Ugly".

I don't think so

by Anonymousreply 5501/28/2013

I'm trying to picture Ricki Lake in this role. I keep flashing to Rosie O'Donnell in Exit to Eden, complete with leather bustier.

by Anonymousreply 5601/28/2013

Ricki Lake was in "Cry-Baby" in 1990, the same year as "Pretty Woman." I somehow don't think the studios would have gone with this look for any version of "Pretty Woman."

by Anonymousreply 5701/28/2013

[quote]Michelle Pfeiffer would have been the best for it.

I think Michelle is one of the most beautiful women in the world but she doesn't exactly give off warmth which is Julia's (only?) true talent as an actress.

by Anonymousreply 5801/28/2013

Jennifer Lawrence would be a good choice if they redid Pretty Woman.

by Anonymousreply 5901/29/2013

the obnoxious laugh, the big curly hair, the catapillar lip, the slumbering walk, were all new at the time. At least for a leading lady playing a hooker. She was not Kim B in LA Conf. Vivian was a plain jane hooker with a heart of gold. I think that was part of the appeal. Then she became the "it" girl cuz we had/have no imagination. That was the height of Julia's appeal. After that, her boobs, bitchyness, and that stupid fucking laugh did the work. She even tried that technique later in her career (don't remember the movie just the promos of her gawfawing) and it didn't hold up.

by Anonymousreply 6001/29/2013

Actually, it wasn't Sandra that Julia started losing steam too... it was Cameron. That's why Julia made sure to make Cameron's life a living hell on the set of My Best Friend's Wedding.

by Anonymousreply 6101/29/2013

Julia was a star long before Sandra.

by Anonymousreply 6201/29/2013

True, R62, but when that spunky chick who drove the bus in "Speed" came onto the scene, the writing was pretty much on the wall for Julia that there was a new America's Sweetheart in town.

by Anonymousreply 6301/29/2013

You are correct R63.

by Anonymousreply 6401/29/2013

Sandra really didn't start becoming America's Sweetheart until the late 90's.

by Anonymousreply 6501/29/2013

[quote]Sandra really didn't start becoming America's Sweetheart until the late 90's.

The media were already referring to her as the new America's Sweetheart when "While You Were Sleeping" came out, which was mid '90s.

by Anonymousreply 6601/29/2013

Valerie Bertinelli as a hooker? You've got to be kidding. NOBODY would havbe bought that.

Cutesy Meg Ryan as a hooker? Nope, nobody would have believed that either.

Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy...neither one was good-looking enough.

Wholesome Pam Dawber as a hooker? No, it wouldn't have worked.

Robin Givens had no talent.

Ricki Lake? Richard Gere falls in love with Ricki Lake? HAHAHAHA!

Nancy McKeon? Plain, butch nancy McKeon as an irresistible hooker? Again: HAHAHAHA!

by Anonymousreply 6701/29/2013

Exactly, R67.

Julia had that "beat bitch" look down pat!

by Anonymousreply 6801/29/2013

Jennifer Jason Leigh was also in the running.

by Anonymousreply 6901/29/2013

Valerie Bertinelli could have done it. It would have been different, but she has the chops.

Molly Ringwald was gorgeous in her mid 20s.

by Anonymousreply 7001/29/2013

Jennifer Jason Leigh would have been a perfect if they would have kept the original concept of the script.

by Anonymousreply 7101/29/2013

No one could have saved PW. It is awful big H dreck, the adult theme of prostitution given the Disney princess treatment. I detest this movie with every fiber of my being in the name of all that is sex & desire & longing & lust.

by Anonymousreply 7201/29/2013

Michelle Pfeiffer. She was offered it first. No one else on that list fits the bill. Michelle does.

by Anonymousreply 7301/29/2013

[quote]denying that they had It is just silly

This statement reminded me of a reality series from about 10 years ago. I think it was on Bravo and followed the lives on several wanna-be actors as they tried to make it in the business. It was called "The It Factor" and the first edition was set in New York and the second in LA. After the second edition aired, it vanished and I've often wondered what happened to all of the aspiring actors on the show. (The only one I remember clearly has done pretty well for herself, though mostly on the reality show side of things: Lisa Raye, who is on "Single Ladies" on VH1.)

Anyone else remember this show?

by Anonymousreply 7401/29/2013

R73 Wasn't Pfeiffer a little long in the tooth to play Vivian?

by Anonymousreply 7501/29/2013

For the sequel, :Prettiest Woman," Cillian Murphy should star.

by Anonymousreply 7601/30/2013

R75 - She is a lot older than Julia, but looks young.

by Anonymousreply 7701/30/2013

THE most Gawd-awfullest movie ever!

by Anonymousreply 7801/30/2013

[quote]THE most Gawd-awfullest movie ever!

That's your opinion, honey.

by Anonymousreply 7901/30/2013

On now on Oxygen

by Anonymousreply 8003/22/2013

Marisa Tomei would have done a good job.

by Anonymousreply 8111/28/2013

It's Elisabeth Shue

by Anonymousreply 8211/28/2013

On the topic of Nancy McKeon, I vaguely remember her playing a hooker in some 80s tv movie.

by Anonymousreply 8311/28/2013

Charlotte Ross would have been fabulous in that role. She already had played a teen hooker on Days of our Lives.

by Anonymousreply 8411/28/2013

I'd have gone with Molly Hagen off her performance in Dallas: The Early Years.

She's a phenomenal actress. Julia Roberts is a one-dimensional actress.

by Anonymousreply 8511/28/2013

Charlotte was playing Eve at the time Pretty Woman was being filmed.

by Anonymousreply 8611/28/2013

If they remade Pretty Woman today, I think Brittan Underwood has the sex-appeal and the talent to do a better job.

Lawrence isn't that pretty. She acts sexy but it's like Ke$ha: look closer and you realize there's nothing there. Underwood could go a month without a haircut or makeup, and two days without sleep, and still look sexy. Plus with the money you save in casting, you can surround her with an elite supporting cast.

by Anonymousreply 8711/28/2013

The role required straight women to root for a street walker who polishes up beautiful enough for a life of polo, Cartier, and private jets. That's actually not easy to make likeable. Roberts did make Vivienne likeable, as obscenely stupid as the story was.

by Anonymousreply 8811/28/2013

Jennifer Lawrence is prettier than Julia was at the same age.

by Anonymousreply 8911/28/2013

John Travolta wouldhave sheken up the role.

by Anonymousreply 9011/28/2013

Three thousand out of a hundred men would choose Brittany Underwood over Jennifer Lawrence. Brittany was up for Hanna Montana years ago, did a soap for a while, then a cable show, and has something coming up that IMDB hasn't figured out yet.

We're talking straight men here, not women or gay men, who place more value on fame or status.

Going back to the 1980s, the woman who played the girl who took Doogie Howser's virginity was as sexy as I've ever seen on a televiswion set.

by Anonymousreply 9111/28/2013

Who is Brittany Underwood?

by Anonymousreply 9211/28/2013

[quote]Nancy McKeon

She would have beaten up all the snobby sales clerk ladies in the Rodeo Drive boutique and then fucked them.

by Anonymousreply 9311/28/2013

R85: Whore, yes, and pretty, I suppose so, but about as mean and nasty as they come )I went to school with her--she once described herself as a "barracuda," with a self-satisfied smile). So glad her career hasn't gone where she would have thought--sometimes there's God, even if he takes His time.

by Anonymousreply 9411/28/2013

As a friend of mine once said after we watched it, "She's sincere. I'll give her that."

by Anonymousreply 9511/28/2013

Here's what Nancy was doing at the time.

by Anonymousreply 9611/28/2013

Young Julia Roberts had that Bambi quality, like the scene where Bambi is learning to walk on ice. I'm not a huge fan, but she was good in this and Notting Hill--she does vulnerable well.

You also needed someone who was pretty in an unconventional way. Michelle Pfeiffer wouldn't have worked, because any guy in their right mind would want to keep her around, she was too pretty for the females in the audience to cheer for, and far too pretty to be a streetwalker for that matter.

by Anonymousreply 9711/28/2013

This is Brittany Underwood

by Anonymousreply 9811/28/2013

I wsa talking about her acting ability. I think she owns a yoga studio now and still acts.

by Anonymousreply 9911/28/2013

On OP's list the only one who could have done a better shop than Julia is Elisabeth Shue. She's pretty without being too pretty. She has decent comedic timing and is likable.

Michelle was too beautiful to play a Hollywood street walker. She could play a high class escort, but not Vivienne.

by Anonymousreply 10011/28/2013

R97 just explained why Megan Fox and Jessica Alba have never been allowed to thrive.

by Anonymousreply 10111/28/2013

R98 - I was asking a rhetorical question. Brittany is not that well known.

by Anonymousreply 10211/28/2013

Melissa McCarthy for the remake!

by Anonymousreply 10311/28/2013

OP, you left out Laura Dern and Jennifer Jason Leigh, both of whom were also considered.

by Anonymousreply 10411/28/2013

I wasn't available, sorry.

by Anonymousreply 10511/28/2013

Jennifer Jason Leigh would have been a great choice had they kept with the original darker theme.

by Anonymousreply 10611/28/2013

Kathy Bates

by Anonymousreply 10711/28/2013

[all posts by tedious, racist idiot removed.]

by Anonymousreply 10811/28/2013

This is hysterical! 3000 ended in original script with her being thrown out of car, with that amount tossed at her at curb.

Kissed Mimi Kennedy. Mercy High School. 1965.

Good times!

by Anonymousreply 10911/28/2013

Misery and Pretty Woman came out the same year, and Kathy was busy with other projects.

by Anonymousreply 11011/28/2013

I was too busy.

by Anonymousreply 11111/28/2013

Dee Hall claims she was offered the role, but she was pretty long in the tooth by then, even if you go by her real age (She was really born inn 1957, not 1947, but changed her age so she could work without the hassles of child labor laws).

by Anonymousreply 11211/28/2013

Julia Roberts would have been seriously superior in Misery to Kathy Bates. Can you imagine her doing the iconic Julia Roberts laugh after hobbling James Caan?

by Anonymousreply 11311/28/2013

Julia would do well in a remake of Misery now.

by Anonymousreply 11411/28/2013

I was only four years old when the movie came out.

by Anonymousreply 11511/28/2013

Julia Roberts was not well-known when she took the original role, so there's history.

How about Odette Annable?

by Anonymousreply 11611/28/2013

Me! Me! ME!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 11711/28/2013

[all posts by tedious, racist idiot removed.]

by Anonymousreply 11811/28/2013

R116 - Julia was known in 1990. She had received praise for Mystic Pizza and Steel Magnolias. Pretty Woman made her A list, but she was not an unknown.

by Anonymousreply 11911/28/2013

When I was in elementary school in the early 90s, several girls in my class considered "Pretty Woman" to be their favorite movie. As I got older, I found it increasingly disturbing that young girls actually idolized a prostitute.

by Anonymousreply 12011/28/2013

The movie is one of the more disturbing Hollywood films on record. Like R120 mentioned, this bizarre romance film triggered some weird, "heart of gold" whore fantasy in young girls, in which they, as Cinderalla, get their partner's love shown to them by being purchased. It is a far stranger movie than anything David Lynch concocted.

I guess for Roberts' character, the debasing sex acts performed for fat, smelly, abusive men occurred off-camera. Just like Hollywood, then.

by Anonymousreply 12111/28/2013

Best thing about this movie is the Roxette song 'It must have been love'

by Anonymousreply 12211/28/2013

Jennifer Tilly.

by Anonymousreply 12311/28/2013

I've never understood the appeal of this woman. She ruined Ocean's 11, IMO. That shot of her galumphing down the stairs in high heels? A football player could have done it more gracefully.

by Anonymousreply 12411/28/2013

Not a fan of hers but I think she's amazing in Pretty Woman.

by Anonymousreply 12511/28/2013

She looked her best in this movie. Julia also played the role well.

by Anonymousreply 12611/28/2013

It's my impression that straight guys think she's really something because of that gigantic mouth. The thought being that she could blow a baseball bat.

by Anonymousreply 12711/28/2013

Was Pretty Woman made before or after Steel Magnolias?

by Anonymousreply 12811/28/2013

[all posts by tedious, racist idiot removed.]

by Anonymousreply 12911/28/2013

She had charisma for days in this movie.

by Anonymousreply 13011/28/2013

I thought Julia was thinner in Steel Magnolias.

by Anonymousreply 13111/28/2013

She did look hot in that ball gown, though.

by Anonymousreply 13211/28/2013

The problem is Julia simply isn't "a pretty woman" and should never have been cast in this film. They should have hired someone who is actually pretty...

by Anonymousreply 13311/28/2013

Disney should remake it with one of their current fucked-up tween whore stars. Make the Julia character about seventeen and the Gere character about seventy-five.

by Anonymousreply 13411/28/2013

[all posts by tedious, racist idiot removed.]

by Anonymousreply 13511/28/2013

Could a film like this - about a cheap prostitute marrying a rich, handsome, sexy businessman - be made today? We live in much more cynical times. Who would believe that a rich guy would fall for a common whore? Maybe in a parody movie.

by Anonymousreply 13611/28/2013

You would have to be pretty cynical to make this film in the first place, R136. A parody remake would be hilarious, but probably would expose too much of the sexism, stupidity and creepiness of the original for the comfort of Touchstone Pictures (aka Disney).

by Anonymousreply 13711/28/2013

Lots of great movies about hookers from the 90s. I loved Whore.

by Anonymousreply 13811/28/2013

[all posts by tedious, racist idiot removed.]

by Anonymousreply 13911/28/2013

Theresa Russell was great in Whore.

by Anonymousreply 14011/28/2013

I've just read the script for the original $3000. It's horrible, but at least it doesn't romanticise either prostitution or sociopathic, asset-stripping billionaires.

by Anonymousreply 14111/28/2013

What it really romanticises is middle class American life and coupledom. Vivienne turns her back on prostitution and signs up for college. Gere turns his back on asset stripping, leaves that company to its grandpa founder and his grandson. We are meant to imagine them with an apple orchard somewhere after they marry, not in a penthouse.

by Anonymousreply 14211/29/2013

Why not ask who else could have played Richard Gere's role?

by Anonymousreply 14311/29/2013

Gere was perfecto in PW. World weary, hard outer shell, but looking to throw it all away in an instant for the right gal.

by Anonymousreply 14411/29/2013

The original title was "Cheap Blowjobs." It didn't test so well.

by Anonymousreply 14511/29/2013

Ellen Cleghorne's SNL character Queen Sheneequa summed it up best - "Cinderella of the 90's? She was a WHORE!".

by Anonymousreply 14611/29/2013

[quote]Wild women do and they don't regret it.

The fuck is that supposed to mean?

by Anonymousreply 14711/29/2013

Mystic Pizza is on HBO right now, and she's actually very good. She recycled the Mystic Pizza scene where she has dinner with the rich kid's parents to use again in the dinner scene in Pretty Woman, but other than that, she's very appealing.

by Anonymousreply 14811/29/2013

Yes, Julia is appealing in her early roles.

I can't think of anyone better than Gere at the time for the role. A good question is who could play the role now?

by Anonymousreply 14911/29/2013

Demi Moore could have pulled it off in the original. She had the same cute mix of sexy and vulnerable in About Last Night and St Elmo's Fire.

If I had to cast the remake, I hate to say this but my first choice would be Amanda Seyfried.

by Anonymousreply 15011/29/2013

Cobie Smulders could do it today.
