John Mulaney Pilot Ordered By NBC, Lorne Michaels Producing

Is he the next best thing on TV? Comedian/writer could be the next Seinfeld.

by Anonymousreply 8310/28/2014

Mulaney is painful. Like a bad show from 1983

by Anonymousreply 110/05/2014

A prostate exam scene? How original.

by Anonymousreply 210/05/2014

Mulaney himself is a terrible actor and has a really annoying presence.

by Anonymousreply 310/05/2014

This is basically a ripoff of SEINFELD, isn't it?

by Anonymousreply 410/05/2014

There were funny lines but the setup, the characters, the blocking and the direction of the show are awful- not to mention Mulaneys awful acting is actually a huge distraction. This is he second pilot in as many years. Why didnt the network force him to take a couple of acting lessons.

by Anonymousreply 510/05/2014

I find nothing appealing about him. Neither his humor nor his looks.

by Anonymousreply 610/05/2014
This is he second pilot in as many years.

No it's not. This is the same show that was over at NBC, only now it's over at FOX.

I love John Mulaney. His standup is awesome. He also wrote my favorite bits on SNL, which has sucked since he left.

But I don't have high hopes for this show, sadly. It's a failure in concept, which means it's not going to be easy to fix.

by Anonymousreply 710/05/2014

Funny standup does not always translate to funny sitcoms.

by Anonymousreply 810/05/2014

I watched ... s'not funny.

by Anonymousreply 910/05/2014

Martin Short is what sucked. I don't like the premise.

by Anonymousreply 1010/05/2014

[R7] it is his second pilot. Fox wanted him to rework the tone of the show. The original pilot was a single-camera vs the final multi-camera format.

by Anonymousreply 1110/05/2014

The original pilot was multi-camera.

by Anonymousreply 1210/06/2014

No, R11. It's the same show. Why are you making shit up? Weird.

by Anonymousreply 1310/06/2014

It's a weird criticism to say he's had 2 pilots in as many years. This is the same show. Same producers, same writers, same cast, same characters, same premise. There may have been some tweaking done, but every new show goes through that.

But honestly, and I'm saying this as a huge John Mulaney fan, they should have reworked the format. He would have done well with a format like 30 Rock. The multi-cam format just highlights his woodenness. And he needs stronger supporting characters.

As it is, it just feels stale and dated.

by Anonymousreply 1410/06/2014

This isn't the same pilot he made for NBC. That version began with the character giving up drinking.

by Anonymousreply 1510/06/2014

It's the same show. Same crew. Same cast. Same characters. Same production team. Same format. Yeah, some slight changes were made. That does not make it a new show. Can you not read? FOX picked up the show after NBC didn't. To say he's had two different shows in two years is completely misleading.

It's like saying when 30 Rock cane out that it was her 2nd attempt at a series since they reshot the pilot.

by Anonymousreply 1610/06/2014

Um the original pilot (unaired) for 30 Rock was completely different. In fact half the characters and cast were different.

by Anonymousreply 1710/06/2014

R17, and no one claims Tina Fey had 2 different shows. Not sure what your point was.

by Anonymousreply 1810/06/2014

R7, if Mulaney is such a great writer he should have written this series.

I would love, love, love to be a sitcom star.

But, dear God, I can't imagine being lucky enough to get a job and then landing on a show like this which is just shit.

by Anonymousreply 1910/06/2014

I don't think anyone is trying to say he has done pilots for two different series. Just saying, the pilot you saw tonight was not the same one they shot for NBC.

by Anonymousreply 2010/06/2014

Maybe if this show fails, he can go back to SNL. He should replace Colin Jost as head writer and on Weekend Update.

by Anonymousreply 2110/06/2014

Weird how L:orne loves him so...YET he never was made a performer on SNL.

by Anonymousreply 2210/06/2014

Well I think the episode demonstrates pretty well why he wasn't a sketch performer on SNL.

by Anonymousreply 2310/06/2014

ok r23, I haven't watched it yet.

by Anonymousreply 2410/06/2014

Disaster.

by Anonymousreply 2510/06/2014

r22, he was worshiped as a writer there. I don't think he wanted it, or LM would let him.

He's one of those guys who's funnier in the room than in a sitcom where the focus isn't as clearly on the words, like a sketch show.

by Anonymousreply 2610/06/2014

He did make a few appearances on Weekend Update. He also won an Emmy for SNL. He left the same time that Wiig and Hader left. The show has sucked since then.

He's made a bunch of appearances on The Kroll Show, and he's funny on there. He and Nick Kroll are besties.

I think this show just isn't the right showcase for him.

His comedy special New In Town is on Netflix. It's pretty awesome.

by Anonymousreply 2710/06/2014

He didn't even bother to write new material for his standup opener. Which is now entirely cliche, by the way, after Seinfeld and Louie have done it better.

by Anonymousreply 2810/06/2014

Horrible! Bet they only show 3 of them

by Anonymousreply 2910/06/2014

I have an enormous crush on him and no idea why. I would totally do him.

by Anonymousreply 3010/06/2014

I like John Mulaney.

I hated "Mulaney."

by Anonymousreply 3110/06/2014

I wanted to like it, and I like Martin Short and Nasim Pedrad, but it was really "meh." And whose idea was it to name the black guy "Motif?"

by Anonymousreply 3210/06/2014

Mulaney is a Nielsen flop, losing nearly half of Family Guy's audience. Expect it to be pulled after next week's airing.

by Anonymousreply 3310/06/2014

It's a terrible time slot for me. I'd watch it live if it were on another night.

by Anonymousreply 3410/06/2014

I hope they at least dump the remaining episodes online. I like the guy and wouldn't mind checking them out.

by Anonymousreply 3510/06/2014

Fortune Feimster is supposed to be on one episode. I hope they at least make it to that one. She needs to be on a sitcom somewhere. Maybe they can make her a recurring character on 2 Broke Girls.

by Anonymousreply 3610/06/2014

If so, he better find his Louis-Dreyfus soon.

by Anonymousreply 3710/06/2014

R36, I'm still surprised they didn't pick up her show with Tina Fey.

by Anonymousreply 3810/06/2014

And no one has pointed out what a train wreck Eliot Gould is playing an old queen?

by Anonymousreply 3910/06/2014

R39, he was more believable than those queens on Vicious.

by Anonymousreply 4010/06/2014

His supporting cast is weak. And Martin Short seemed to be in a different sitcom. Too bad because I like John Mulaney but I believe I may not be seeing much of him.

So long. Farewell.

by Anonymousreply 4110/06/2014

Short plays evil better than comedy. He's funny as a talk show guest but he's not good in funny roles. He's great in "Inherent Vice."

by Anonymousreply 4210/06/2014

"Maybe if this show fails" ............if?

WHEN.

by Anonymousreply 4310/06/2014

From "TV By the Numbers" today:
Mulaney is certain to be canceled. Even on the train wreck that is Fox this season, it's premiere ratings landed it directly into the Cancellation Bear's jaws. The bear wouldn't be surprised to see it at 7:30pm Sunday sooner, rather than later, to burn off whatever episodes remain.

by Anonymousreply 4410/07/2014

I love his stand up routines, he seems very talented. You would think he'd recognize this crap for what it was and not get involved.

Maybe it was one of those things that started out promising in development but deteriorated when the suits got involved?

I agree the show is [italic]just awful[/italic] and the person who said upthread that it seems like a bad sitcom from the 80s is correct.

by Anonymousreply 4510/07/2014

R45, personally, I wouldn't say no to the money.

I was in debt for years working in a chosen field that's lots of fun but doesn't pay well.

A few outside projects got me out of debt and now I get by each month, carefully working at not slipping back into debt.

He'll come out a few hundred thousand in the bank, I'm sure, for a failed series like this.

by Anonymousreply 4610/07/2014

The second episode was better.

by Anonymousreply 4710/12/2014

Get rid of Martin Short and that whole schtick.

by Anonymousreply 4810/12/2014

Anyone else wanna pound Mulaney's ass so hard?

by Anonymousreply 4910/12/2014

He wrote some pretty brilliant Stefon stuff. Respect must be paid.

by Anonymousreply 5010/12/2014

No.

by Anonymousreply 5110/12/2014
Anyone else wanna pound Mulaney's ass so hard?

Yes, and I want to keep the shirt he had on last night when I'm done.

by Anonymousreply 5210/13/2014

His show sucks donkey balls.

by Anonymousreply 5310/13/2014

He's a writer, not an actor. Will be canceled. Next.

by Anonymousreply 5410/13/2014

I like both JM and Martin Short. I'd rather watch the manic comedy of the latter.

by Anonymousreply 5510/13/2014

I have always hated Martin Short and Dana Carvey.

by Anonymousreply 5610/13/2014

Ratings increased:

by Anonymousreply 5710/13/2014

It really does seem like a direct copy of "Seinfeld." It's even closer than "Diff'rent Strokes" and "Webster" were to each other.

by Anonymousreply 5810/13/2014

I like him a lot, and I hope the show succeeds. But can the suits from ITCHY AND SCRATCHY cancel Martin Short's quiz show so John can do something else?

by Anonymousreply 5910/13/2014

The show is getting better. And Mulaney is really attractive.

by Anonymousreply 6010/19/2014

The guy said it was his second PILOT in 2 years. Not second series. Not second show. He was RIGHT.

by Anonymousreply 6110/19/2014

Welcome to 3 weeks ago, R61.

by Anonymousreply 6210/20/2014

Mulaney would have fit quite nicely in the William Higgins's stable of young porn men in the early 80s - slight athletic build, not too muscular, not hairy but unshaved. I can easily picture him in a three way with Tim Richards and Bobby Madison.

by Anonymousreply 6310/21/2014

According to "TV By the Numbers," "Mulaney" is effectively cancelled.
Mulaney will not only not receive a follow on episode order, its order for 16 episodes was cut back to the already produced 13. It has been canceled.

by Anonymousreply 6410/21/2014

That's too bad. It seemed to be "slightly" improving the past couple of weeks.

They just never seem to give shows a chance to get on their feet these days. I really believe there are some shows that can evolve and improve immensely.

I guess it's just too expensive and competitive to do that these days.

by Anonymousreply 6510/21/2014

Oh no, what will Nashim Pershad do now? Can she crawl back to Saturday Night Live? Will Lorne give her her job back? She's only missed 3 episodes.

by Anonymousreply 6610/21/2014
Nashim Pershad

Oh, dear.

by Anonymousreply 6710/21/2014

Oh no, what will John Mulaney do now? Can he crawl back to Saturday Night Live? Will Lorne give him his job back?

by Anonymousreply 6810/21/2014

This thread is crawling with actor Nick Kroll. Mulaney promised him a lot for all that Nick invested in him throughout the years.

If Mulaney gets mainstream fame Nick is sure his investments will pay off.

Kroll has compiled a list. Mulaney and Tig Notaro are top two on this list. They get hyped in ways that are not regular.More like a payola scheme than any run of the mill PR machine.

Kroll wants to be a big Hollywood mover and shaker - on top of trying to be famous.

by Anonymousreply 6910/28/2014

I'm a bird watcher but for DL trolls. The sighting of a new one gets me very excited. The possibility of a Kroll Troll (above) has me very tingly.

by Anonymousreply 7010/28/2014

R69 is one of those two ugly incestous dyke sisters who stalk Tig Notaro and are obsessed with Nick Kroll. They are both insane and come in and derail every thread on DataLounge thats even remotely about 'comedy'. I wish they'd just kill Tig and get it over with just so we don't have to see their insane obsessive posts on literally EVERY site on the internet. Get a job already girls.

by Anonymousreply 7110/28/2014

Today, we are all Kroll Trolls

by Anonymousreply 7210/28/2014

R69 = Alissa Spitzberg, the poor man's D*vida R*chelle

by Anonymousreply 7310/28/2014

I love John Mulaney. But Nick Kroll is creepy.

by Anonymousreply 7410/28/2014

Kroll is creepy as hell.

Don't know much about Mulaney but do know that this Tig person faked cancer and that she obsessively monitors the DL.

by Anonymousreply 7510/28/2014

Did someone mention Tig Notaro?

Bitch ain't funny.

by Anonymousreply 7610/28/2014

they are cancelling tig notaro's shows left and right for lack of interest. no wonder she's freaking out here.

by Anonymousreply 7710/28/2014

Higgins got those guys at the strip clubs in Windsor, Ontario.

by Anonymousreply 7810/28/2014

Nick Kroll is hilarious. There's some troll here who hates him and posts about him all the time.

by Anonymousreply 7910/28/2014

R79 is Nick Kroll.

by Anonymousreply 8010/28/2014

Yes, because I think Nick Kroll is funny, that means I am Nick Kroll.

Excellent work, Nancy Drew.

by Anonymousreply 8110/28/2014

R81 Thanks

by Anonymousreply 8210/28/2014

I HATE that Stefon character, and that's all I really know of him.
