NRA lobbyist: Obama kids ad 'ill-advised'

January 25, 2013

A top lobbyist for the National Rifle Association says he opposed an ad that highlighted the armed protection President Obama’s children receive.

The brash web video called Obama an “elitist hypocrite” for letting his kids be protected by armed guards while arguing that armed school security was not the only solution to gun violence.

“I don’t think it was particularly helpful, that ad,” Jim Baker told Reuters. Baker heads the federal affairs division at the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action. He represented the NRA at a White House meeting on gun violence led by Vice President Biden. He said he informed colleagues of his views after the ad was released: ”I got to say my piece.”

White House spokesman Jay Carney called the ad “repugnant.” NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam told the Post at the time that the ad was not meant to target the president’s children. “The main aim of the ad is to make sure that we all act to keep our children safe. It’s not aimed at anyone’s child in particular,” he said.

In a speech responding to the Newtown, Conn. elementary school shooting, NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre argued for armed guards in schools. Obama has called for increased funding for school security, but he is also pushing for an assault weapons ban and other gun control measures.
